What if your birth chart wasn't just a tool for self-discovery—but a map for your life's work?
Strategic Magic explores vocation, visibility, and meaningful business through the timeless wisdom of traditional Hellenistic astrology.
Hosted by writer and traditional astrologer Blu Cameron, each episode blends ancient astrological philosophy with modern questions about work, reputation, creativity, and entrepreneurship. From Midheaven case studies and vocational astrology to business strategy and the rhythms of sustainable growth, this is a space for people who want to build work that is deeply aligned with who they are.
Because success isn't just about building a business... It's about becoming known for the work you were meant to do.
So what exactly did traditional astrologers mean by vocation?
Well, in this episode, I wanna dive deeper into this and specifically what traditional astrology has to say about vocation, career, and work in general.
Hello, hi, and welcome or welcome back to the Strategic Magic podcast. I'm your host Blu, and I'm a traditional astrologer here to help you explore vocation, meaningful work and entrepreneurship, and how it all comes together.
So in this episode, we are going to be diving into one of my favorite topics, vocation: exactly what it is and how it differs from career, your occupation... all these other words that encompass our work, and most importantly, how traditional astrology aligns with all of this in the birth chart. So if that's something that's of interest to you, then keep listening.
I am so excited for this episode because vocation is something that I just love talking about and diving deep on. I think that it really does bridge the gap between the current state of work where we're feeling ultimately really collectively unfulfilled, and feeling like we are choosing to either commit ourselves to work that is unaligned to us, but is supportive for our basic needs, but also is so far away from the work that we truly want to be doing.
And I do believe that work is such an important part of our lives. And so more entrepreneurs especially have the power to align themselves to work that is truly meaningful and that utilizes their own natal promise, but it begins with really understanding what vocation and work and career actually look like.
So I wanna use this episode to break down how these things are defined within traditional astrology, and how we can explore them within the birth chart.
First and foremost, traditional astrology is so cool because it really moves away from this modern telling of what career and work actually looks like.
When we're looking at it from a modern lens, modern astrology often ascribes work and career in very simple terms. But if we're diving into the history of traditional astrology and ancient astrology, we're looking at it from a few different lens. Now, work, career, occupation, and vocation are all different topics that get lumped together when we're discussing work and career.
And specifically when we're talking about overall how do I find a career that I'm meant to be doing? How do I find the best job for me? Or how do I find the work that I'm meant to be doing? We're merging together all these different things. So I wanna take some time and really break down the different significators as well as the different definitions of these things in order to help you to better understand them and how you can look at them within your birth chart.
First off, let's speak about work, right? So in general, work is an overarching term that can be used to describe the literal things that you are doing on the pursuit of making money. So if we're looking at it from that definition, the 2nd house is definitely the place that you would look to in the birth chart to define mainly what your work should be, but specifically the work that is going to be making you money.
Now, I wanna make it very clear here that when I'm speaking about work, this is coming from a non-emotional place. So work is literally just the skills and the services that you can monetize. Definitely a 2nd house matter because the 2nd house is ruling over what skills and services you can offer that are gonna be most aligned to monetize.
But this is also the house of values, right? So what are the material things that are important to you? This automatically leads to work that you can do.
This is very different from what your occupation is, your career, and ultimately your vocation. But work in the sense of what are the literal skills that you are trading your time for, in order to get a paycheck, in order to be paid by clients... this is a 2nd house matter.
When we're looking at career however, now we're talking about a process that is undergone over time. And so, within traditional astrology, this is looked to as a 10th house and a midheaven matter.
Now I say this because both of these placements are important, and I think that it is really important to look at them from both aspects, of both the 10th house and the midheaven.
Also, if we're following traditional astrology and you're using whole sign houses, which I do encourage that you do, the midheaven is going to move around. It won't always be in the 10th house. So this is gonna be really helpful for you, especially if you are somebody who natally has the midheaven in a house different from the 10th house when you are following traditional astrology.
But overall, when we're thinking about career, , this is the culmination of the work that you are undergoing over time. So this can include your occupation, which we'll talk about next. But this is also speaking to the skills and services that you're offering today... if you're doing them over a period of time, that can expand into your career. It can be a culmination of all the work that you have undergone over time, all the work that you have done within your occupation and also outside of that as well. So this builds into a really interesting way because this creates space for your expertise to also be monetized as well.
So we have the 10th house, and we also have the Midheaven as the two main points that we would look to for career. Within that, we're considering so many different aspects of this, as well as within work if we're looking at the 2nd house.
So we wanna consider the house itself: are there any planets that exist within these houses? What are they saying? What are the aspects that they are making within your chart to other placements in your chart? As well as the rulers of these houses.
So now we have occupation, which is the literal thing that you do. So this is the literal thing that you're doing if you're in a 9-5. What are you doing to trade your time for money? And as an entrepreneur, what is your job role, your title of exactly how you help people? That is defined by your occupation.
And this traditionally is a 6th house matter because this is speaking to quite literally the literal thing that you do and the inevitabilities of work. 6th house is a really challenging house for a lot of people to operate with because it is a house of bad fortune. And this also speaks to more of the mundane matters within daily life, or the things that can bring about challenges or hardship within one's life: finding a job, choosing your occupation, figuring out what you want to do and commit to your work life, which is such a significant part of so many of our lives.
These are all 6th house matters if we really think about it, especially in a modern sense. And so it makes sense that this is a 6th house matter, and that this is lumped into the ways that we explore how we define our happiness or a satisfaction within work and career.
Your occupation plays such an important role in this, in helping you to figure out exactly what direction your career overall is going to, but also in aligning work that you are doing today into a role that allows you to do that over time.
So as you can see, work, career, and occupation have significant roles, and they build upon each other, and they have a very significant relationship to each other that help to deepen their importance within the chart. Which is why I think traditional astrology is so valuable when we're having this conversation about work and career and essentially finding the alignment between all of them.
Now, the last thing that is really important to bring into this is your vocation, which again, is something that excites me so much because this is really talking about your purpose.
Vocation can be seen as both the work you are uniquely qualified to do, or it can also be your calling. So it's the, the bridging of the gap between the two things, the literal work that you are doing that feels like, ah, yes, this feels like work that deeply satisfies me on an individual level, and also what I am called to do; what is in alignment with my natal promise or what gives my soul deep satisfaction.
Modern astrology will have you thinking that your vocation, your purpose, is always going to be aligned with the North Node. Traditional astrology says otherwise. That is going to be the domain of the Lot of Spirit, or the Lot of the Sun, which does not get as much love as it needs to. But the Lot of Spirit plays such an important role in this conversation and within work, because this is really speaking to the, the quality of the circumstances of your purpose, what you are drawn to, what you are called to do, and what you find yourself returning back to over and over again.
When I was first learning about the Lot of Spirit, and specifically where it falls in my chart, it helped to bring about a really important appreciation for the role that vocation has within work. 'Cause it's one thing to do work that makes you a lot of money, that satisfies a lot of surface needs. But it's another thing to have work that deeply fulfills you or that you're able to do that satisfies those human needs, and that you also feel really fulfilled emotionally and spiritually with doing.
The Lot of Spirit is really important in this conversation, especially when it comes to uncovering your vocation and how it plays a role within work, career, and occupation... this really can't be overlooked.
If I were looking at a chart, I would also look to other things, such as the Sun or the chart ruler, and the relationship that all these placements have. But the Lot of Spirit for sure is going to be the main focus of your vocation and purpose within the chart, and how this can align with the work that you are meant to do.
So as you can see, there are so many different ways that work, career, occupation, and vocation are defined within the birth chart. And this is really supportive and exciting too, because there is no one placement that defines what your job, your career, your occupation needs to be, and also especially what your purpose is.
It's the combination of all this, alongside your individual experience and your self-awareness that allows you to uncover the work that is truly meaningful for you and how to bring that forward within entrepreneurship and within your own business.
So I am really excited to explore this deeper with you. And if you're curious about how this all works within your chart, I wanna invite you to join me in a vocational reading.
Within my vocational reading, we actually dive deep into all of this. It's a live reading where we meet together and explore how vocation, work, career, and occupation come together in your chart, and how you are specifically designed to bring all of that forward.
