Good morning and

welcome to Morning Serial.

Okay good morning, we've

been waiting all week for it.

It's Friday and it's also National Be An

Angel Day, which is a nice reminder to be

somebody's bright spot today, which can

be as easy as just

giving someone a free smile.

But be honest, who's looking forward to

National Be A Devil Day?

Well, right now it's moved to a quote

from someone that seems

like an angel, James Corden,

who said, "You will always make mistakes

and you'll miss the mark sometimes.

That inevitably is going to happen,

because the best people in

the world, they make mistakes,

even people who are brilliant."

Now imperfection is part of being human.

Unfortunately here's a

sports analogy for you.

It's to move on to the next play and

learn from it, right?

Or maybe you're more of

the fish analogy type person.

Just keep swimming.

All right, well today's news, facts, and

birthdays are for August 22nd.

We're going to start back in 1864.

That's when the first Geneva Convention

was adopted in Geneva and

it was for the amelioration

of the condition of the

wounded in armies in the field.

Don't worry, you don't

have to look that up.

I just told it to you and

it was signed by 12 nations.

Then in 1980, baseball legend Nolan

Ryland, he recorded his

5,000th career strikeout,

which was a milestone that still echoes

in the record books today.

And then finally in 1980, Bill Veeke's

attempt to sell the

Chicago White Sox for just $20

million was blocked.

I'm thinking I would

take that deal, right?

I mean, the White Sox are

worth today over $2 billion.

Man, worth the DeLorean when you need it.

All right, well, happy birthday to you if

today is your birthday.

You share a birthday

with pop singer Dua Lipa.

She's turning 30 today.

Little cutie with little hands and

hilarious comedian, actor,

and writer, Kristen Wiig.

She's 52 today.

Comedian host and today's

morning angel, James Corden.

He's only 47 today.

And now the number one song on this date

back in 2000, it's

going to be Me by NSYNC.

Now this boy band Anthem held the top

spot on the Billboard

Hot 100 for two weeks.

But here's where you may

or may not be surprised.

This was NSYNC's only

number one hit on the Hot 100.

Now the band did have some number one

songs on the Billboard

pop charts, so it's not all

lost for NSYNC.

Don't cry too many tears for them.

And they put out new music in 2023 in the

event you didn't already know that.

Well, from group harmony to personal

connection, let's

dive into Kobe's Habit 6.

Subchapter one on one.

So we are in Habit 6, which is branching

into practical applications

like one on one interactions,

which is our focus here.

So Kobe is stressing individual

connection as the seedbed

for synergy, which is when

two people bring their best and they

combine it into something greater.

So in this section, Kobe says, quote, one

on one is the prime

application of synergy,

end quote.

And he's talking about authentic

dialogues where people

don't just exchange words, but

concrete understanding.

It's the antithesis of

multitasking conversations.

Instead, it's undivided attention.

It's presence.

It's earnest listening.

So these one on ones

aren't just quick check ins.

They're invitations

into each other's world.

Here's what Kobe

describes them looking like.

Slow conversations with thoughtful

questions like, how can I support you?

What's your thinking here?

Kobe writes, quote, if I genuinely

understand your world and

you genuinely understand mine,

then synergy is not only possible, it's

inevitable, end quote.

Now that's the power, not in agreeing,

but in respecting

differences and allowing better

ideas to emerge.

These interactions,

again, they build trust.

And Kobe states that relationships deepen

right through one on

ones when they become

a soil rich enough for innovation,

conflict resolution,

and genuine progress.

And Kobe reinforces that synergy isn't

forced group think, it's

collaborative creativity

fueled by mutual respect.

Now this section, it also

warns against shortcuts.

Don't just call someone

once and check that box, right?

One on ones require intention,

scheduling, empathy, and follow up.

Kobe says, quote, the path to synergy is

paved with authentic connection.

Okay, here's your takeaway.

One on one meetings are not just

communication tools, they're conduits for

trust, collaboration,

and innovation.

So carve out the time and show up with

presence and synergy,

well, it should follow.

So today be an angel to

both others and yourself.

Whether that means sharing a meme or a

phone call to somebody or

sharing a meal with somebody.
