Genecia Alluora: Hello, gorgeous. I'm Genecia Alluora, the author of two best-selling books, Make It Happen and Personal Branding Secrets, former Miss Singapore International Cafe Retail Chain owner, Southeast Asia Woman of Excellence 2010, and International Progressive Women 2019. I'm also the founder of Soul Rich Woman. And today, in this episode, I want to talk about what do you want to be when you grow up? And it's never too late to find your dream job. I mean, everyone loves to ask our children that question, mainly because they will say very interesting things like a doctor, astronaut, maybe a ballerina, a veterinarian. Of course, children aren't so bothered by the fact that they'll one day need a job that pays the bills or need to have skills that will pay the bills or care about making sensible decisions and choices.

Genecia Alluora: They just want to do what makes them happy. And me, much earlier in my life, I wanted to be a vet, a veterinarian. I love animals so much. I have three cats and one dog, well, adopted one. And I love animals so, so, so, so much. And I just want to be that. And the other one I wanted to be was to own my own business, which if it doesn't work out, I thought I will be a professional dancer. I never thought I would meander through my life, through different options. And you know what? I wasn't able to become a veterinarian because first, I think my grades couldn't make it. And of course, I had to support myself through school since I was 14 years old. And even then, I wasn't good enough to win a scholarship to go do my veterinarian studies. But maybe now I could. But nevertheless, now I'm a business owner.

Genecia Alluora: So it's quite funny how life works out for you. So what about you? What was your burning desire as a child? Most people have a secret dream of what they want to be and to do with their lives. Some are already living it either as a career or as a hobby. Others are too scared to even articulate what they want. How do you discover your dream job or your purpose in life? I would say look for clues. Now, finding your ideal job or purpose is really obvious when you connect the dots, when you look back. That means it's kind of like a look back and you try to connect the dots. You try to connect your dots on hindsight. Because it's really been a dream for a really long time or it just fits so perfectly with your innate skills and talents.

Genecia Alluora: People who find their passion in life say that everything just came together or all of my experiences in life has led me to this. And I would say that to you as well. I would say that all my life experiences has led me to Soul Rich Woman. So clues can be found in childhood as well. Now, I have a girlfriend from my New Paper New Face competition days. She was just a really good girlfriend even up to today, since 2004. She's always wanted to be an actress from a really young age. And right now, she's one of the media comp actresses or what we call the local TV station actress and has gone international as well in Taiwan and doing it full-time. So if you have no idea but you know for sure that you're not doing it because anything but what I'm doing now isn't specific enough for the universe to manifest the right opportunities, people and resources to help you along the way.

Genecia Alluora: Consider these, the following, okay? These questions. Ready? First, what do you love to do? Two. What have you always dreamt about doing with your life? Three. What do other people tell you that you are fantastic and fabulous at? Number four. What dream courses do you think about taking all the time? Number five. If you didn't have to worry about taking a pay cut, what or what other people thought about you doing with your life what would you do? These yummy five questions are really yummy. And these are the questions sometimes I ask and talk about it on my live shows as well as when in my coaching with my clients. So I would say take the first steps and do it afraid anyway because once you have an inkling, an idea of your passion, like a light bulb or aha moment, then you can take some steps towards changing your career or living in your purpose.

Genecia Alluora: For example, volunteering, shadowing someone in your chosen field, being an apprentice of Soul Rich Woman, taking it on a side hobby or completing a course like this Soul Rich Woman Blueprint to get new qualifications. It doesn't matter how old or young are you. Time is going to pass by anyway. I remember I interviewed Gary Vaynerchuk for my podcast for women who love the F word. And he said, go to the elderly's home and look into the eyes of the elderly. What do you see? Happiness, regret, sadness, anger, whatever that you want to see, you think you saw, what do you see in your own life? What do you want to see in your own life when you grow old? So life is really short.

Genecia Alluora: Life, you only live once. Now you might look at the length of time it would take to complete a completely new line of study. For example, getting certified as a podcast coach with our Instant Podcast Leader certification and licensing program. You think, oh my God, it will take how many days or how many weeks? Or what's the point? Right? So I tell that to my friend, Dawn, who almost, finished her part-time psychology course and she started on top of a completely different career. And kudos to my, another friend, Ben, who did his part-time MBA. The times goes really quickly. So, I've got another girlfriend who became a reflexologist after working in a departmental store for years and hates it despite having no clue of how she was going to do it.

Genecia Alluora: I've got girlfriends turning from occupational therapist into running a F&B business. So, I would say make the change. I know that making drastic changes can be scary. I get it. But it's also liberating. Quitting a horrible job is awesome. Applying for your new dream job is a great step in the right direction. But you have to do something. Otherwise, you stay exactly where you are now. And if you can't afford to make the change, then start to plan how you could ease into a new career without completely derailing your life or causing a lot of stress. Put aside a bit of money for your program. Start changing your spending habits now to anticipate a drop in income or spare some time outside of your current job to move towards your dream. Genecia Alluora: Now, you might be working late nights and weekends for a little. But I guarantee it will pay off eventually and you will enjoy because it will be a lot of fun. It will be entirely for you. Remember, this is about you. It's never about me. You investing in yourself is not going to change my life one bit. I'm not going to get a new car, a new home, another new Chanel. No, I'm not going to get that because you are investing in you. So even just indulging in your passion as a hobby that will make big changes in your life, do it. Doing a night course on photography, that will spark your creativity. Volunteering with animals will make up for never becoming a vet. And going on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday will probably satisfy that inner dream. For me, I'll never be a professional dancer and I'll never be a veterinarian.

Genecia Alluora: I just occasionally do my country line dancing and on my YouTube videos and dance with it. But it reminds me that my passions are important. And also adopting three cats. And they are my family. So what are you doing or going to do to make a change in your life? My answer to you? Own it. As you make the transition into your new life, you have to start seeing yourself in a new way before other people will. It took me so long to tell people that I was running an online platform that's called Soul Rich Woman. I just sometimes didn't believe it in myself. How could I tell people that? Sometimes it just feels like weird. These are my own limiting beliefs that I too had to clear too, just like you.

Genecia Alluora: Well, I just want to say, that what you say becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. So next time someone asks what you do, just experiment. For example, you can say, I'm an actress. I own my own business. I'm an author. I'm a photographer. I'm a graphic designer, etc. You know, my dad always tells me this joke. I say dad because he was hospitalized and then he was hospitalized for some conditions. And when he was discharged. I asked him, so dad, why did you get discharged so early? He said, Dr. Low allowed him to discharge. He said, I'm my own doctor. So my father really is quite a funny person. He would tell me that he's his own doctor. But jokes aside, remember, get your business cards made up, start a website or make a brochure. It will help you to feel that, that it's real.

Genecia Alluora: You can use tools like Canva or PicMonkey to help you to do just that. Now, if you feel uncomfortable telling people your dream, then get out there and get some experience. Everyone has to start somewhere. Most professions have an apprenticeship of sorts or internship. Don't be embarrassed, okay, if you have to start at the bottom. And sometimes with purpose and passion fueling you, you won't be there for long. Don't worry about doing work for free at the beginning. I too started that way. So this is just to get your confidence, your mojo up, and to help you believe in yourself and your work.

Genecia Alluora: So I'll ask again, my dear, what do you want to be when you grow up? When you grow outside of your limitations, fears and self-doubts, when you grow out of the need of, of needing other people's approval, when you grow out of living up to the expectations of others. When you grow out of those nayslayers and dream slayers giving you cold blanket. When you finally give yourself permission to dream and be happy, I'd love to hear about how you're making your dream a reality one step at a time. We all have a part to play. We all have a part to play in this. This is your time, and you are ready for the next step. The more action you take in a consistent way, the faster you build momentum and really grow your business.
