Good morning.

And welcome to morning cereal

Okay, good morning and welcome to the

best work day of the week. It's Friday

and today is national

Just do it day. So you have no excuses to

do whatever it is. You just need to do

It's also national compliment day and the

power of a compliment

is pretty remarkable

Either giving or receiving one can boost

your happiness and your confidence

It makes the act a win-win you never know

when someone else could use some good

vibes. So just do it

Give someone a compliment

Let's go ahead and just jump straight

into Friday's quotes one fun

Nostalgic quote and then a second quote

to tease our book

review later in the episode

Hopefully one of these quotes will speak

to you and kickstart your

day in a positive direction

The first quote is from former Apple CEO

Steve Jobs and he said

quote your time is limited

So don't waste it living someone else's

life. Don't be trapped by dogma

Which is living with the

results of other people's thinking

don't let the noise of others opinions

drown out your own inner voice and

Most important have the courage to follow

your heart and intuition

They somehow already know

what you truly want to become

Everything else is secondary. That's well

said. I don't even have

anything else to add to that

So we'll just go ahead and jump straight

in today's teaser quote from the book

review and this quote is

referring to a gentleman

That will hear more about in the story

But it says quote he discovered the

astounding importance

people place on their own name

End quote as usual will unpack that here

in just a minute during

the book review segment

But first let's jump into our usual dose

of fun and historic facts

from this day in history

Okay, today's news facts

are for January 24th in

1848 carpenter James Wilson Marshall

He found some nuggets of gold in

California's American River near the side

of a sawmill that he was building

Well, the discovery ushered in the gold

rush as some three hundred thousand

people traveled to California

in 1899 the rubber heel for boots or

shoes was patented by the American

Humphrey O'Sullivan of

interest to a lot of our listeners in

1935 on this day is when the first canned

beer was sold by an American company

Kruger Brewing Company. It was called

Kruger's cream ale first canned beer in

1984 Steve Jobs introduced Apple's a

revolutionary computer Macintosh

That was two days after the

groundbreaking commercial in 1984 aired

before a national TV audience

Which heralded the

products and pending release in?

1989 American serial killer Ted Bundy who

confessed to murdering 30 women though a

lot of people believe

that number to be much

Higher he was executed at the age of 42

not related but in

2003 the US Department of Homeland

Security came into being as Tom Ridge was

sworn in as the

agency's first secretary in

2008 Amy Winehouse was admitted into

rehab in a battle to kick

her addiction to drugs in

2004 the six-wheeled robotic rover

opportunity landed on Mars on this day

Like its twin rover spirit, which had

landed on January 3rd

They both analyzed rocks and soils and

relay pictures back to

earth. Okay moving on to birthdays

Happy birthday. If today's your birthday

you share birthday with the late John

Belushi. He was born in

Footballer or soccer player Luis Suarez

now of inter Miami stardom.

He's 38 and Neil Diamond is 83

Okay now to the music in the movies of

the 80s 90s and 2000s the

number one song on this date in

1985 was like a virgin by Madonna

Interestingly Madonna did not write the

lyrics to this iconic song

They were written by two men Billy

Steinberg and Tom Kelly and Kelly

actually sang the demo of the song

Apparently Steinberg wrote the song for a

male singer and it was about coping with

the end of a relationship

and the start of a new one

But they weren't sure if they should use

the word virgin which was considered

controversial in 1984

But once in Madonna's hands

well

we all kind of know how that turned out

but she liked the word virgin because she

liked the innuendo and the irony and the

different levels that it spoke to and the

rest is as they say history as like a

virgin spent six weeks at number one and

Madonna's performance at the inaugural

MTV Video Music Awards is considered a

defining moment in pop culture and

The number one movie on this date in

1988 was Good Morning Vietnam

Now this movie is based on the life of

Adrian Cronin a DJ who hosted an Armed

Forces radio show in

Saigon during the Vietnam

War and his part was played by Robin

Williams who was said that he had

ad-libbed all of the radio

DJ scenes in the movie and

Robin Williams went on to win the Academy

Award the Golden Globe and

the Grammy for his performance

Okay, let's move into our personal growth

segment here on the morning cereal

this is where we take a few moments to

reflect on the lessons learned from the

current book we're reading and

Currently as you all know, we're reading

through Dale Carnegie's how to win

friends and influence people

it's a timeless book that is consistently

on all the must-read lists and it's

packed with rock-solid advice and

Actions for us all to use and build

healthy foundational concepts to live by

Yesterday we finished chapter 2 of part 2

entitled a simple way to

make a good first impression

And it's as simple and as we learned as

powerful as starting off with an

authentic heartwarming smile

Have a good time when you meet people and

your enthusiasm and

positivity will shine through

Carnegie's principle number 2 is super

simple but super

powerful and can change our mood

You can change other people's moods and

it can change lives in the long run

Principle number 2 is simply smile

Okay, we're making really good progress

in the book and we're

starting chapter 3 of part 2 today

which is entitled if you don't do this

you are headed for trouble and

Carnegie starts this chapter with a quick

attention-grabbing story about a town

that's preparing for a funeral of an

unfortunate death of a child and

as the story goes Jim Farley senior was

getting the horses ready

to take to the funeral and

Sadly, he was kicked and killed by the

horse. So two deaths

and two sentences. I know

Hope you had your coffee this morning

Well, Jim Farley left behind a wife and

three kids and his oldest boy who was

also named Jim Farley

Was only 10 years old when he essentially

became the man of the house

now young Jim dropped out of school and

went to work making bricks and

Young Jim Farley never

received much schooling

But he had a natural geniality and a

flair to make people like him and an

uncanny ability to

remember people's names

So he eventually went into politics and

although he never went

to high school by the time

He was 46 years old four colleges had

given him honorary degrees and Farley had

become chair of the

National Democratic Committee and

Postmaster general of the United States

Carnegie interviewed Jim Farley and asked

him what the secret to his success was

and Farley said quote hard work

To which Carnegie

replied quote don't be funny

I understand this because you can call

10,000 people by their

first names in quote and

What did Farley say back to this? He said

quote. No, you were wrong. I can call

50,000 people by

their first names in quote

Carnegie says quote make no mistake about

it. This ability helped

Mr. Farley put Franklin D Roosevelt into

the White House when he managed

Roosevelt's campaign in 1932 in quote

Farley had developed a system for

remembering people's names

when Farley met someone new

He learned their complete

name and then in his mind

He built a picture of their

name along with some facts

He would learn about them their family

their business and

their political opinions

And when Farley next met this person he

could recall their name and

inquire about their family, etc

So Carnegie says of Farley quote that he

discovered early in life that the average

person is more interested in his or her

own name than in all the other names on

earth put together in quote and

By remembering someone's name and

recalling it easily is a subtle yet very

effective complement

On the other hand by forgetting or

misspelling someone else's name could be

viewed negatively and diminish your image

Similarly if someone has an especially

difficult name to pronounce instead of

just using a nickname

Actually taking the time to learn how to

say it can also build real goodwill

Here Dale Carnegie calls again on Andrew

Carnegie and in addition to Andrew

Carnegie's flair for organization and

genius for leadership

By the time he was 10 years old

He had also quote discovered the

astounding importance people place on

their own name in quote

Our author Dale Carnegie tells a few

stories of how Andrew

Carnegie when he was a kid

named rabbits after kids who would help

him feed his rabbits and

As a businessman Andrew Carnegie named a

huge steel mill after the president of

the Pennsylvania Railroad

And who do you think they

bought their steel from?

Yes, Carnegie and another time Carnegie

suggested a merger of one of his

companies with competitor and

Carnegie suggested using his competitor's

name for the name of the new company

and it was known that Andrew Carnegie

took pride in knowing the names of the

workers in his steel mills and

Consequently none of Carnegie's mills

ever went under a labor strike

I think we're starting to see where our

author is taking us here

People want to hear you use their name

and it builds goodwill

with them when you do so

Although I wish he would give us a few

more tricks to learn names because I know

that is something I am just not great

At however, it seems I may need to double

down on developing this skill

Believe it or not tomorrow

We'll actually finish up chapter 3 of

part 2 if you don't do this

Then you're headed for trouble. So be

sure to come back tomorrow for Carnegie's

principle number three of six ways to

make people like you

Well, I hope your Friday is off to a

great start warm someone else's day today

with a smile and a compliment

You can do it. And if you're Friday or

your week's been difficult. Just remember

you're doing a great job
