Speaker 2:Alright. Welcome to the new problem corner on KINY. Glad you could join us for this. It is 11 minutes after 1. And we do have, special guests in the studio with us today.
Speaker 2:We will get to the phone calls here momentarily. Bear with us. We're, we're gonna kinda feel our way through the 1st day of Prowler Corner. We will get to your phone calls as I promised. Right now, we are going to defer to our guests.
Speaker 2:We have 2 guests here to represent, Safe Grad 2025. They are Brandy Billings and Jessica Geary. Welcome, and thank you for joining us, both of you.
Speaker 3:Thanks, Mike. We are here today to talk about Healthy Parents for a safe graduation party that has been, being hosted by community parents since, I believe it started in 1988 with that graduating class. Wow. And, yeah. It's pretty it's and it's been going and it's been going great.
Speaker 3:So
Speaker 4:but we are here
Speaker 3:to talk about the community participation and, hoping to get, parents of seniors, juniors, sophomores, even freshmen involved in involved in the planning process of this great community event.
Speaker 2:That's, you know, that that's awesome to have the parents involved in the planning, and as well as I'm guessing some former graduates who have maybe attended. That would be attended. That would be also wonderful because I bet they have ideas that, that maybe we could we could use. Now, Safe Grad 2025, that's coming up when?
Speaker 3:So the party's graduation is May 26th 20 of 2,000 and 25. And so we are starting early and our first planning meeting is this coming Wednesday, October 2nd at the LG Rayfield conference room and that's at 9309 Glacier Highway Building b. And we are looking for anybody that wants to come and help us start the planning process.
Speaker 2:Okay. Alright. Now, how how long have you been involved? Brandy, specifically, how long have you been involved with Safe Grad?
Speaker 3:Well, like Jessica, daughters who were seniors, we partnered together 2 years ago as the co chairs. And, we did it again last year. But we also, have seniors again this year. So
Speaker 2:Okay. Okay. Now, parents parents of of freshmen, sophomores, all of them, they're they're welcome to participate in safe grad planning and volunteering. And now is the time to do that so that they're familiar with how everything's gonna work. Right?
Speaker 4:Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. And, and I will say going going through having a graduating senior myself and Brandy can attest to this. You're very busy when you have a senior that's graduating.
Speaker 4:There are parties, events,
Speaker 5:just so many different things. So the
Speaker 4:more, junior parents, many different things. So the more, junior parents, sophomore parents that we can get, the better because they are going to be a little bit more freed up that final week. And it's just really helpful to have many hands makes light work as they say. Okay. Alright.
Speaker 4:Excellent. Many hands makes light work as they say.
Speaker 2:Okay. Alright. Excellent. Now in order for Safeguard to really go off with a bang and and be a powerful statement for these seniors, need money. Right?
Speaker 2:Yes. So we're also doing some fundraising. And what do we need?
Speaker 4:That's correct. Yes. We need money. So we usually target, about $35,000 is what we budget to make an event like this. Really, really cool.
Speaker 4:So we have the, facility rental. Every senior gets a gift. We have prizes. So, essentially, we will not turn down any donations of time or money or, or in kind items. Like, we have people that will, donate gift certificates or different things that we can use for lots of different purposes.
Speaker 4:So if you have something or you think you might have something you wanna donate, please reach out and we'll, we'll help with that process.
Speaker 2:Excellent. Excellent. Now, when we get to to the actual event itself, how many how many attendees are we expecting?
Speaker 3:So every graduating senior is afforded the opportunity to bring a guest with them. Okay. One guest. They have to be between ages of 16 20. And so we have just shy of the last few years we've had just shy of 400 seniors.
Speaker 3:And so we can get anywhere from 3 to 400 kids in there. Not not every senior comes to the party.
Speaker 6:We wish that they would.
Speaker 3:That's the whole goal. But, but we can get anywhere between 3 400 kids in the US Rec Center.
Speaker 2:Okay. Okay. And, typically, when does, Safeguard start and when does it end? It's an overnight event. Right?
Speaker 2:It's an all night event is what I should
Speaker 5:say.
Speaker 4:Yes. Yes. So the goal is we usually start up right around, 9:30 PM. So they have their little graduation ceremony. They can do pictures or whatever with their family, and then want them to head to the party.
Speaker 4:And, and the grand prize drawing will take place at 1:25 AM. Okay. And so they have to be there to be eligible to win that grand prize.
Speaker 2:So it it's an all nighter. And now when they head there, how do they get there?
Speaker 4:That's a great question. So, so we have partnered in past years with First Student. They've donated the buses and the drivers. We're hoping that we'll have that same partnership with them this year. So essentially, the kids have to arrive on the bus.
Speaker 4:They don't have to leave on the bus, but we will have buses leaving. And once they leave, they cannot come back. So that's the big rule.
Speaker 2:Alright. Yeah. I think that's probably a safe rule. Again, it's safe Grad 2025. We're speaking with Jessica Gary and Brandy Billings about Safe Grad.
Speaker 2:And, we are going to jump into a couple of phone calls if that's okay with you 2. We're gonna take our very first new problem corner phone calls and, see what we can come up with. Maybe somebody's got a comment or somebody can help out with Safe Grad 2025. So let's do that. Good afternoon.
Speaker 2:Welcome to the new problem corner on KINY.
Speaker 5:Hi, guys. I'm I'm looking for a DVD movies.
Speaker 2:Looking for DVD movies? Yeah.
Speaker 5:The Walking Dead.
Speaker 2:The Walking Dead. Oh, the whole season. Okay. Alright. How many are in the season?
Speaker 7:I'm also
Speaker 5:looking for the Yellowstone, the 6 seasons.
Speaker 8:Ah. Okay. If you wanna give
Speaker 5:term ones, the old ones.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 5:And if he he might want to sell them, I'll give them away. Can we call 780-3020?
Speaker 2:3020. Ask for Gilbert. Gilbert. Alright. Gilbert.
Speaker 2:780-3020. Everything. Yeah.
Speaker 5:If Annie, Billy, Caremeade, and Nangoon, can you give me a call me at the half warehouse?
Speaker 2:Alright. Hey. Thanks a lot, Gilbert.
Speaker 5:One more.
Speaker 2:One more.
Speaker 5:Darrell Shook Lane. You be you might know Darrell Shook Lane over in Hoonah. Give me a call too.
Speaker 2:Okay. Well, the same number. Right? Yep. Alright.
Speaker 2:Thanks a lot, Gilbert. There you go. Gilbert's, looking for those DVDs. Also looking for folks to give him a shout. You heard him.
Speaker 2:780-3020 is the magic number. Give Gilbert a shout and, help him out if you would, please. Good afternoon. Problem Corner, you're on the air? No.
Speaker 2:You're not either. We're back to Jessica and Brandy. How are you how are you 2 doing on our new problem corner?
Speaker 3:I am. I am super excited to be here. You know, I love problem corner and I'm super glad that you guys have brought it back even, in this new in this new, adventure that we are a part of as as the first, Yeah. The the first new problem corner. I do wanna, point out, one thing about the safe grad party.
Speaker 3:We are doing it again at the UAS Rec Center Okay. Which has proven to be a great partnership. The UAS facility is also the National Guard facility. And last year, you know, Dave Klein, the manager out there at the UAS Rec Center and his team, really, really help us, put on a great event. The use the UAS Facilities Maintenance Team is always there helping us prepare the facility, putting down the floor in the gym.
Speaker 3:So we get to use the entire the entire gym. And then, they help us clean up, which is awesome.
Speaker 2:And that's a beautiful facility too.
Speaker 3:It is. And then last year, we had the, National Guard Sergeant Smack and his team stayed, and they brought out the Nintendo Switch and had a game going in their little office. And then, we ran out of water, so they helped us out with some water. But, you know, there's a great group out there.
Speaker 2:Alright. That's awesome. And it is a beautiful facility. If you have not seen it, yeah, maybe go visit it and then maybe you'll wanna get involved with Safeguad 2025. Okay.
Speaker 2:They are looking for fundraisers, fundraising, prizes, decoration. You're looking for decorations?
Speaker 3:No. We're looking for people to fill these. These these are the managerial spots. Oh. Or the
Speaker 2:the the lead. For people to do the decorations. Yes.
Speaker 3:Or be a head of that committee.
Speaker 2:Alright. Those These are different committees. Different committees. Okay. These are the committees that they need to fill.
Speaker 2:Fundraising, prizes, decorations, volunteer coordinator, transportation, security, secretary, marketing and advertising, social media. There I'm sure there's somebody that can do that. Food, activities and senior gift. What senior gift? What are we what are we looking at there?
Speaker 2:Senior gift. Is that is that like a prize package? Is it multiple prizes?
Speaker 4:So so it's sort of a prize package, if you will. Basically, the all the parents on the committee put our heads together. We try to figure out what our kids might like, what they might think is cool. Last year, it was like one of those Nalgene style, water bottles and then an etched blanket. And, the other thing we try to do each year is come up with, like, a logo or a theme for for the year.
Speaker 4:So, so we're working. We have one of our parents working on that logo right now. And so the goal is to get that printed on different things. So, some years we've had, like, hats or t shirts, or we just try to, partner with local businesses to get them to maybe make something really cool and special.
Speaker 3:So yeah. Well, that
Speaker 2:that's got my wheels turning. What what kind of a cool thing could you do for for graduates of 2025?
Speaker 3:Well, the other cool thing that and this is two of our great community sponsors, every year for since I don't know how long, Bullwinkle's and the grinds. Bullwinkle's has given away, a 13 inch pizza to every graduating senior. And the grind gives has been giving away a drink. Awesome. So it's and those are the 2 things that the kids absolutely love.
Speaker 2:Alright. That's fantastic. We're gonna take a short break, play a couple of our commercials, and, get those out of the way. We're gonna come back, take one or 2 phone calls, and wrap up Safe Grad 2025 if that's okay with you too. You've been listening to
Speaker 9:the new problem corner on KINY. It is 122. Hi. I'm Nano Brooks, and I'm running for assembly. The amazing people of this community give so much to make the CBJ possible, and what we get is city services, facilities, and utilities in financial struggles on top of a soaring cost of living that has many of our friends, families, and fellow community members leaving due to the burden.
Speaker 9:I'm running to give the people what they deserve. You all deserve an assembly that is transparent, responsible, and accountable, and you all deserve to own land. And I'm the only candidate who has a plan where the assembly can give people the opportunity and hope they deserve by getting land into your hands for as close to free as possible. Such a program is already in the charter and could bring prosperity to the people and this city. So go vote on or before October 1st.
Speaker 9:Your support, the people will always come first and foremost. Paid for by Nathaniel Brooks, box 34397, Juneau, Alaska. It's me,
Speaker 10:your radio. And I just bumped into Ralph, who is our chief engineer. Now I'm not saying that Ralph has inhaled a bit too much solder over the years, but he just told me that he fears success. Now knowing Ralph, I told him, look, Ralph, it's okay. You got nothing to worry about.
Speaker 10:But enough shop talk. Let's talk about how you can use radio to supercharge your business. Here's some stuff you may not know. Radio is known as the super local media. That's something you can't get with anything else.
Speaker 10:Radio has the greatest reach of all mediums, 93% every week. Radio delivers exceptional brand recall, 5 times greater than non radio advertisers, and and radio delivers superior ROI. For every dollar spent on average, you can generate $10 a return or more. Finally, radio dominates listening in new cars, 13 to 1. Just think of me as the dominator.
Speaker 10:Now you remember Ralph. Right? I love what he's done with his hair. How did he get that to come out of
Speaker 2:his nostrils like that? Find out how Juno Media Center can help your business grow with radio. Go to Juno Media Center.com

Speaker 2:Alright. We are back to problem corner. It's 124. Good afternoon, and welcome to problem corner. You're on the air.
Speaker 11:Hey. Welcome back, everyone. Congratulations on being back on the air. We all missed you.
Speaker 2:Alright. How are you today?
Speaker 11:I'm doing good. Just just wanted to call to let everyone, know know to get out and vote today or tomorrow. Got a big election here. Lots of excitement going on. I just pulled up to the Mendenhall voting center myself and get my ballot cast, and everyone else should do the same.
Speaker 2:Alright. Well, hey. Thanks for the call, and, great reminder. Appreciate that.
Speaker 11:Alrighty. You guys have a good one.
Speaker 2:You as well. Bye bye. That's right. Get out and vote. It, it is very, very important that you do so, and you do so now.
Speaker 2:Okay? Welcome to Problem Corner. You're on the air. Hello.
Speaker 6:Hello. I just wanted to welcome back Problem Corner. It's been a long time.
Speaker 2:Yeah. That seems to be the general consensus. People want to welcome back problem corner. Appreciate your call. Is there anything else we can do for you today?
Speaker 6:I know that all the communities that are involved are gonna be happy as I am.
Speaker 1:I missed you.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Have a
Speaker 6:good day.
Speaker 2:You as well. We missed you as well. You have a fantastic day, and we'll talk to you again soon. I'm sure. There you go.
Speaker 2:Some phone calls on the new problem corner here on KINY. Back to Brandy Billings and Jessica Gearing with Safe Grad 2025. You do have, committee meetings coming up directly. Do you not?
Speaker 4:We sure do. We have one this Wednesday, October 2nd at 6 PM, and we meet at the LG Rayfield, large conference room on the 1st floor.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 4:And they're in the professional plaza. The address is 9309 Glacier Highway, Building B. So if you're curious, if you wanna come help and and find out what it's all about, please stop by, our meeting. The other way you can get a hold of us is we have a Facebook page, which is Juno Safe Grad dash Alaska. And because we were told young kids don't use Facebook and that we should get an Instagram account, we did that.
Speaker 4:So that is at Juno safegrad Alaska. And then for all of us other people, we have an email address, which is safegradjuno@gmail.com. And, if you have any questions or wanna know how you can help or, just reach out to Brandy and I, you can reach us at that email address.
Speaker 2:Okay. And I see a couple of phone numbers here at the bottom of the flyer. Should we mention those as well? Sure. Okay.
Speaker 2:You can also get info by calling or texting 907-723-2994 or 907-321-3224. And, it's Safe Grad 2025. Again, they they are in need of of parents to help out. And, there are so many different departments that you can help out with. Transportation, the security, the, fundraising.
Speaker 2:That is the
Speaker 10:big one. That's really kind
Speaker 2:of the base, of where where Safe Grad 2025 is gonna start because it can't happen without some money. So so we need, what what did we say, 35,000? Right around 35,000? Correct. 35,000.
Speaker 2:And we wanna make it if we can get more than that, that'd be great, of course. Because we wanna make it bigger and more powerful for these, 2025 graduates. And, make it something that they are going to remember. Do you remember Safe Grad? Do you remember the party?
Speaker 12:I do.
Speaker 4:It was
Speaker 3:a lot of fun. It it was it was a great time with your friends and and your one friend that you got to bring along with you. And so, it was memorable. It is something that I that I remember. It's something that we still kind of talk about, because I am still friends with a lot of people like myself high school with.
Speaker 3:So, but, yeah, just one thing about Safeguard. This is for every graduating senior in Juneau. Yeah. At in at any of, like, the the the
Speaker 4:the high school, homeschool. Exactly. The the alternative high school, any graduating senior, we would love to have them.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 4:And they're one guest.
Speaker 2:Excellent. And they're one guest. We wanna make sure that that's emphasized so they don't feel like they're going alone and they're not they're they're not there by themselves.
Speaker 5:Correct.
Speaker 2:Correct. So so again, you need to think about what what you want your kids to to do at the end of the year. Safeguard 2025 is gonna be a fantastic deal. It's always been a great deal, and it's been going on for a long time. There's a reason it's been going on for as long as it has is because it works.
Speaker 2:It keeps these kids safe, on the biggest day of their life. I mean, the biggest night of their life, period. Safe Grad 2025. Again, you can email safegradjuno@gmail.com. You can call or text 9 07723-2994 or 907-321-3224.
Speaker 2:Jessica and Brandy, thank you for coming in. Is there anything that I missed? Do we No.
Speaker 3:But congratulations on bringing problem Carter back. Yes. It?
Speaker 2:I didn't do it. It wasn't it wasn't me. I'm I'm just I'm just a tool that they're using here.
Speaker 3:So Well, we love it. Thank you.
Speaker 2:Thank you both for coming in. I do appreciate your time, and, thanks for being the first guests on on the new problem corner.
Speaker 3:Thanks again. Thanks, Mike.
Speaker 2:Alright. Thank you, guys. There you go. Brandy Billings and Jessica Geary. They're both here for, Safeguad 2025, and, that's gonna do it for the first half of problem corner.
Speaker 2:We do have more problem corner coming your way. Keep your ears right here.
Speaker 12:If you're living with dry age related macular degeneration or dry AMD, you may be at risk for developing geographic atrophy or GA. GA can be unpredictable and progress rapidly, leading to irreversible vision loss. Now there's something you can do to
Speaker 2:Slow it down and get it going slower.
Speaker 12:Isurve is proven to slow GA progression.
Speaker 2:I survey gets GA going slower.
Speaker 5:Isurve
Speaker 12:visitizerbay.com. That'sizerbay
Speaker 1:dotcom. You're listening to the new problem corner on KINY, bringing neighbors together for generations. From the days of Dennis Egan to today, we are proud to continue the tradition of lively debates, community insights, and local connections here on KINY. It is 131.
Speaker 2:Good afternoon, and happy Monday to you. Welcome to the new problem corner on KINY. You know what? We should probably tell you what the weather's gonna do because it is going to be some serious weather. Rain through the rest of the day with a high of 51, winds out of the east at about 10 miles per hour today.
Speaker 2:Tonight, however, rain becoming showers, a low of 45, winds out of the east 20 to 25, gusting as high as 45. And then we are expecting somewhere between a quarter and a half inch of rain tonight. More showers tomorrow with a high of 50 and winds out of the south southeast 10 to 15 miles per hour. Currently, in the capital city, we have winds out of the east at 12 gusting to 28. It's overcast in 52 here at the Juno Media Center.
Speaker 2:There you go. Welcome to the new problem corner. You're on the air. No. You're not either.
Speaker 2:Welcome to the new problem corner. You're on the air. Oh, 2 hang ups in a row. Well, we probably waited too long to answer those. So we'll we'll see if we can get another one here shortly.
Speaker 2:Should probably refer to a couple of the emails that I have been getting a lot of emails actually. Let's see here. We have, state your question. Oh, that one oh, bring back problem corner. Yes, we did.
Speaker 2:We did. We did bring back problem corner. Here's, one that I'm not sure that doesn't make a lot of sense. Some of these just aren't making sense. However, this person says that they have an HP laser jet toner cartridge, 53 by 2 pack, brand new, still in the sealed box.
Speaker 2:And Amazon lists for $319. They're just asking 2.50, and they will include the partial used cartridge as well. You can call 907-364-2616. That's 364-2616 for that laser jet toner cartridge. Good afternoon.
Speaker 2:Problem cornering on the air.
Speaker 8:Yes. Good afternoon. I'm just calling in to remind everybody out there in Juneau to vote yes for the recall of the school board members and vote for all new school school board members, tomorrow. We have an opportunity to nearly replace the entire board instead of having people that just give excuses and, blame other administrations for their issues when they've been there for a number of years and have done nothing about it. I just really urge people of Juneau to vote yes for the recall and vote for all of the new school board members.
Speaker 8:Let's get some new blood in there. It's time for a changing of the guard.
Speaker 2:Okay. Hey. Thanks for the call, and thanks for the reminder.
Speaker 8:Okay. One more thing. You can go further to savejunoschools.com.
Speaker 2:Okay. That's a web address, I'm guessing. Savejunoschools.com. Yes.
Speaker 9:But alright.
Speaker 8:One that has the true information and backs up for everything that's claimed.
Speaker 2:Alright. We'll take a look.
Speaker 8:Thank you.
Speaker 2:Hey. Thank you. Alright. This is the new problem corner on KINY, and good afternoon. You're on the air.
Speaker 11:Yeah. Good afternoon. Thanks for taking the call, and and thanks for your program. Thanks very much. I'm urging everybody to vote no on the ballot measures.
Speaker 11:The ballot measures 1 and 3, would authorize liens against our property for long term debt. CBJ has plenty of cash, but they wanna use that on projects we've already turned down or projects they know we would turn down. Using debt long term debt doesn't make any sense, given the physical outlook the the city has. So I just wanna urge everybody to to vote no on the on the ballot measures.
Speaker 2:Okay. And I and and I'm gonna I'm gonna say this about that. I would urge everybody to get educated on those ballot measures. That's number 1. Before you vote any direction on anything, get yourself, the the information's out there.
Speaker 2:Get the information before you make the decision. So, and, I appreciate the call, and thank you for the reminder. I think, we need those. Thank you very much. You have a great day.
Speaker 2:Alright. There you go. More problem corner calls. Here's, an email. New women's jean jeans, size 18 and $15 each, bought the wrong size and have had them in the closet.
Speaker 2:She may have had them for some time in the closet. If you'd like to get those new women's jeans, size $1,835 each, call 907 209-6860. That's 209-6860. Good afternoon. The new problem corner you on the air.
Speaker 6:Wow. Welcome back problem. Go ahead.
Speaker 2:Well, thank you.
Speaker 6:Well, I just, have a comment about, the drivers here in Juneau.
Speaker 13:Yeah. When the sun, goes down,
Speaker 6:a lot of drivers don't turn on their, their headlights.
Speaker 2:The well, that's that's that's one truth about it. Yeah.
Speaker 10:I'd say it.
Speaker 6:It's pretty scary because, it caused some serious accidents.
Speaker 7:Yeah. We
Speaker 6:almost had a couple collisions by, the careless driver to drive in the really, really dark resident areas with no headlights. Yeah. See Yeah. Driving down the road. It's I don't know why they're doing that.
Speaker 6:It's
Speaker 5:pretty scary.
Speaker 2:You know, I think mostly people just forget to turn their headlights on. I don't think they purposely go, hey. I don't wanna have my headlights on. But but, yeah, I totally get you, and I I I don't disagree with you. I I think we need to have our headlights on more often than not, particularly around here, this time of the year, especially when it's, you know, foggy in the morning and and need those headlights on and people driving a dark car, you can't see them.
Speaker 6:Yeah. Well, other than that, we'll come back.
Speaker 2:Alright. Hey. Thanks for the call.
Speaker 6:Alright. Have a great day.
Speaker 2:You too. Bye bye. Make those make sure your headlights are on, would you? Let's see what else do we got. Email wise isn't the day to vote November 7th?
Speaker 2:We're talking about local stuff. Local stuff. That's what we're looking at, Mike. Okay. Good afternoon.
Speaker 2:Bob and Courtney on the air.
Speaker 8:Hello. I have a vacuum cleaner with the wet vac 5 gallon 5 horsepower. I'll check
Speaker 7:the best out here.
Speaker 8:I'm at 419-379.
Speaker 2:3779?
Speaker 7:Right.
Speaker 2:And that's a 5 gallon wet vac?
Speaker 7:It's wet dry vac. It's okay. Wet.
Speaker 2:Alright. We'll send him your way.
Speaker 8:Yeah. Thank you.
Speaker 2:You bet. Have a great day. Alright. He's got that 5 gallon wet dry vac he'd like to get rid of. 419-3779 is the magic number.
Speaker 2:That's 419-3779. And good afternoon, Rob. I'm cornering you on the air.
Speaker 8:Yeah. Good afternoon,
Speaker 11:Mike. How are you doing today?
Speaker 2:Fantastic. Yourself?
Speaker 14:Alright. Doing good. Hey. I've got a couple of Playstations for sale. I got a play PlayStation 1, original condition, comes with 9 games.
Speaker 14:I'm asking 200 for that. And I've got a PlayStation 2 that comes with 3 games. It does need a power cord, so I'm only asking a 100 for that one. And they can give me a call at 3 215-569.
Speaker 2:5569. And you said the, the PlayStation 2 needs a power cord?
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:Okay. We'll see if we can find that and, get somebody to buy those from you.
Speaker 6:Alright. Thanks, Mike. You have
Speaker 2:a great day.
Speaker 5:Thank you.
Speaker 6:Bye bye.
Speaker 2:Alright. A couple of Playstations for sale. A PS 1 with 9 games, just $200 for that, and a PS 2 with 3 games, but it needs a power cord. I would imagine the power cord's not all that difficult to find. You can pick that PS 2 up with the 3 games for a $100.
Speaker 2:You call them. 321-5569. 321-5569. I had another email here. Oh, that's the, just a repeat of the email.
