Hi, this is Leah Crawford.

0:00:36
And I'm Rhonda Nolan.

0:00:37
Welcome to the Let's Talk with Leah and Rhonda show. We're here for you and we're ready to go.

0:00:42
Let's do it. Good morning, Las Vegas.

0:00:48
Miss Crawford, how are you doing today? You want to know what you know, ma'am? I'm still on cloud nine. I know you are. But my chin is peeling. It's cold outside. Oh, it is cold outside. You know, they were teasing us a little bit with the nice weather, but it's cool. It's not as cold as it was. It's cool. It's cool. It's Saturday morning. Did you work out this morning? I did. I did. I'm on top of it now. Every day I wake up, roll out of the bed, put on the workout outfits and hit it. It's serious now. It is swimsuit season in about 30 days and I gotta be ready. I can't bring my winter body to the party.

0:01:24
You can.

0:01:25
Okay, so I'm bringing my winter body to the party.

0:01:26
But you gonna cover it up when you get there.

0:01:28
It don't matter. I'm bringing my winter body to the party. I'm bringing my winter, yeah. And the Peloton, because I keep on walking by it. And it looks at me, I look at it. It looks at me, I look at it. It look at me again I'm like yeah okay we're gonna see each other soon. So as you know I've owned a Peloton for some time now and I'm not gonna tell you how long because I'm embarrassed but I finally got on it for the first time this week. I got on it and I did a 20 minute ride and it was great. No it's absolutely, well you know I was, I'm you know I'm with the Peloton. Yeah. I got the clothes and everything. Exactly. You got the outfit. I got the outfit. So it's time for you to re-engage.

0:02:05
You need to fall back in love with your Peloton.

0:02:07
I am in love with it, but right now we're just looking at each other. Right now we're just looking at each other.

0:02:11
Y'all gonna time out right now. You wanna know what? We're gonna re-engage. But let's do this. Next week, let's get on. Let's pick a time in the morning. Let's get on, because we can ride together. Absolutely. We can ride together. Maybe we'll have some other people join. But I want to tell y'all guys today we started, well restarted. I was a charter member of a Toastmasters group with the Urban Chamber and we have re-kicked off and we started again about two weeks ago. Today was one of, I mean this Thursday, past Thursday was our second meeting. Fantastic. And I have some of my other Toastmasters, fellow Toastmasters is important especially as an entrepreneur talking about your business because I don't know if I hadn't gone to Toastmasters if I would feel comfortable on the radio and now I've been doing radio for about four or five years but Toastmasters helped me and that was part of that journey but to my right I have Mr. Brandon Ward and Brandon is no no no stranger to radio because he hosts other radio shows. And then we have Ms. Ashley Dotson. And we're going to talk today, just dialogue about the things that are going on at the Urban Chamber, why you as a small business should be a member, right? And just the other things, the good things going on in Las Vegas. So welcome to our show, y'all.

0:03:34
Thank you.

0:03:35
Thank you for having us.

0:03:36
Yeah, okay.

0:03:37
So we know what, ladies first, though. We're going to go ladies first.

0:03:39
We're going to go ladies first.

0:03:40
Ashley, tell us about your business. I know you said it was Love Inc.

0:03:44
Yes.

0:03:44
And you went into some fabulous description and I couldn't write it all down, so I'm not even going to begin. Please tell us about it. Absolutely. I appreciate you. Good morning, everyone. I am Ashley Dodson. My nonprofit organization is Love Inc. It's an acronym for Ladies of Virtue Eclectically Excelling. It is focused on women's empowerment. We focus also on mental health advocacy and underserved populations through resources, whether it's housing, giving back in matters of toys rise, food distribution, and clothing. Most of our target population has been over the last seven years, the transient population, and then also dealing with women in need and transitioning.

0:04:27
Got it. Love it. Love it.

0:04:29
Yes.

0:04:30
I got some contacts for you.

0:04:31
Okay.

0:04:31
Especially when you're talking about women and toy drives.

0:04:36
Yes.

0:04:36
I used to do toy drives.

0:04:38
Used to do toy drives.

0:04:39
Yes.

0:04:40
I love helping women. Well, women and children.

0:04:42
That's my thing.

0:04:43
Yes, that's our thing. That's my, you know, kids are my thing.

0:04:46
Yeah, kids are our thing.

0:04:46
Kids are my thing for real.

0:04:47
I love it. Thank you.

0:04:48
Okay, so Brand, you know, no stranger, we've done this before, introduce yourself. Yeah, so Leah, you've been around since day one, since I came into the business industry, but I wear mini hats and luckily we're going to talk about Toastmasters, I feel like they really do contribute to me being able to wear these mini hats and balance them out. But my name is Brandon Ward, I'm an author and I'm also a business coach. I'm also the business navigator for the city of Las Vegas, and I'm business development executive for the Urban Chamber of Commerce, which means I'm in charge of sales and bringing in membership. But one thing that I'm very focused on is helping entrepreneurs and business owners work on their business instead of in their business and get them to succession planning. My goal is to get you to either sell your business, expand our franchise, but my business, the we mentality, we focus on the team development. So in order for you to take your business to the next level, you need people. And those people got to be elevated, those people got to be trained, succession planning, all those things. So we figure out what your goals are, what your timelines are. And we make sure that the person who is next in level to do the to be the manager to become the leader that they're ready and then we make sure that you as a business owner you

0:06:05
get out of the way.

0:06:06
Okay, so, but no, but let's, but, and you want to know what, but you said you, he, you dropped a few nuggets there. And what's this one thing we talk about? The difference between, between working on your business and working in your business. And if you don't separate the two. So let's, let's delve deeper in working on the business.

0:06:27
Yes, ma'am.

0:06:28
On the business.

0:06:28
So we have a six-step approach that we use. And usually, we start with the foundation. And the foundation is just your destination. That's like your vision, your mission, your core values. You got your financials there. You got your how you're going to distribute your product or your service as well. And then the other part is financials, knowing how you're going to be able to run your financials. This is where we call Leah Crawford and had him come in. And they do the job instead of us trying to learn it all by ourselves but people don't know finances so there's break-evens profit and loss statements all of these statements that business owners don't utilize that they need in order to have a good full picture of their business but then we go into the second portion which is what is your niche what is your customers look like and how do you get in contact with your customers the next thing is going to be pretty much your marketing, just figuring out what that customer base is and how do you turn those leads into customers. And then after that is your team, building your system so that your team can work that system. And then the fifth process is the succession planning, finding a manager who can take over the business. And then six is, you know, whatever it is that your vision is. Whether it's golf, travel, whatever it may be. But the way we have structured our system is for a business owner to be able to see their business in entirety instead of just seeing the problems, instead of just seeing the day-to-day operation of the business. If I can work on the business or at us, if I can work in the business right now taking care of everything that needs to be taken care of, I can also start putting in strategies that can meet me so when I need things down the line and when I say that I mean like recruiting right I got a new position I need to put a recruiting system together what does that employee look like what's the skill level where am I gonna find that person all these are systems that have to be put together in order for you to get the right person to come into your organization so we just help people with that that was a lot no no the wealth of information he's a wealth of information but I mean cuz that and and honestly it all kind of makes sense right because When you are the when you set out to start this small business First off you got to be passionate about something whatever it is you passionate about something Because if you're not passionate about it when it doesn't work as a friend of mine says you'll have a grand opening in the grand closing Right quickly quickly in the grand closing. Right? Quickly. Quickly. And I can tell you even in my business it's been peaks and valleys. Peaks and valleys. And people talk about starting it but can you maintain it? Right. What's the sustainability? Can you, right, can you sustain it, right? Because peaks and valleys is cool. When I got to sustainability I was like, cool, oh my God, I don't know how to act.

0:09:14
Okay, all right, God, thank you.

0:09:16
All right, okay.

0:09:17
You know, first, you know, thank you, but sustainability. And then somebody said, well, you wanna retire one day? I was like, wait, we just got the sustainability. Let me live here for a minute because then we have someone talking about retirement. And as an entrepreneur, is your business set up for you to be able to retire. Absolutely. I love that. Even with you touching on that, for me, a goal of mine is to be able to retire by the age of 45. So my timeline is diminishing quickly. I'm not too far from there, but absolutely being able to be put in a position where generational wealth matters, having, as you said, succession plans, making sure that we are being about our business and making sure that we are putting our best foot forward when it comes to our business. So I believe the way that we work ourselves out of our business is of course making sure that we work it and being our true authentic selves while we're doing that. I think that a lot of people have a disconnect when they're giving and providing a life of service because they get so caught up in what their goal is which sometimes isn't what they're actually looking to do when they're providing their services and their products to the people but you tell my I have to look in the mirror Absolutely. Okay, you definitely are working to the mirror some mirror work You have to be authentic and what it is that you're doing and what you're providing for the people Otherwise, it's not going to reciprocate itself It's not going to give back to you what you've put into it if you're not putting anything into it So yeah, I hate when I meet somebody somebody in uh, you know We met some people yesterday and a guy came to me and said, he said, I'm going to, I'm going to acquire a business. And I said, what kind of business? He said, I don't know. I said, well, what do you like? What do you love? Like, what are you passionate about? I don't know. I'm like, so you're just going to look at the numbers and that's how you're going to decide. What about when you don't want to do it? What about when you don't want to deal with these people? What about when you don't want to be in that environment? Then what are you going to do then? And I think people don't really look at that. They don't understand how much this business is going to impact their lives and I think it's good to be able to give people a clear view of what it's like but then more than anything be able to give people resources that they not aware of. Entrepreneurship is hard because it is not a nine-to-five it is a 24-hour situation and when you're running your own business it is again it's not nine-to-five so if you're coming out of nine-to-five and purchasing a business already in play, you have to understand you're getting ready to really work. But on the other hand, you could gain some really profitable businesses. I know several business people who have bought businesses from other people because those people didn't have family members that wanted to take over the business. And the business was profitable so they couldn't just walk away. And I was going to say that because when you talk about generational wealth, people throw that term out all the time and I sometimes I just looked out I'm giggling I'm like okay because generational wealth comes in so many different ways absolutely and don't miscon... like some people misconstrue that. The kids still got to work. Yes. Right. Yeah. They still you still got to go to work right but what are you working absolutely how are you working and like for me I know people's parents some of my colleagues from school parents had a bunch of real estate kids got the real estate sold at all parents passed away they sold all the real estate and I was sitting here and I'm on my head hurting I'm like oh my god why did you do that but didn't have a work ethic all they saw was the money yeah right so the parents had the idea that we're going to do this but we weren't talking about the business absolutely you know my children were with me in my business okay both of them mm-hmm no Nassir comes to the radio station when he went and we giggle and laugh and me and Rhonda got a whole program for him and we keep him real no no you got to work we're gonna teach you how to invest I'll teach you about banking and What's your conversation? You know one question? I always ask children Do you want to work for a hundred percent of your efforts or one percent of a hundred people? Let's talk about the thinking and who you're around.

0:13:37
Yeah.

0:13:38
So I cherry pick friends. I'd be like, that ain't the one. You have to listen. You got to vet people out. Well, you have to but I also I also know that, you know, people can change if you want something different, you know, but don't like for my circle. We don't have certain conversations, you know, we we not even talking with look here. What's what's next? We don't we don't delve in problems. Look, okay. That was a bad day. What's the solution? What's next? And when you're around an amazing bunch of people, now don't say this stuff don't happen, because stuff happens. And when it happens, we just sit back and we just giggle. Rhonda calls me, well, what you think? Well, you come on now, you know, you got 20 minutes. 20 minutes and then we want a solution.

0:14:19
Yeah.

0:14:20
Yeah, we like to problem-solve, you know, so it's nothing you can't throw at us that we're not going to sit back, think about it. If we don't know the answer, research it, then get back to you with the right way to handle a situation or a good way or options, some options, options, really options, because there's multiple ways to handle right to handle problems. Because if you've got some of our first reactions, we put,

0:14:40
and that's why I like, and that's why I like the, I like masterminds, right?

0:14:43
Having groups of business owners, entrepreneurs, people who have either been through what you've been through, about to go through what you're going through, or are going through what you're going through at the time. And it's good to have emerging businesses, new starts, and corporations. And what I really love about our community is like you have places like Caesars and MGM, they actually have like leadership development programs and they partner you with someone who actually matches. But then how do you do that as an entrepreneur? And that's and I guess that's the biggest thing, right? Because I know and I always go to stuff and they like, lead and all you've been in business. I know I'm the beginner. Talk to me like you talking to that new business owner because it might be something that they say. Absolutely. That's going to trigger something. Yeah, that's going to help me grow. Because I told you I've been sustaining for a lot of insane, but now I'm going to grow. So we have to keep hearing things over and over again in advertising for a person to remember a brand, they'll have to see the billboard eight times, hear the radio commercial ten times, you know, see it in print another ten times before they'll even remember what that brand is and what their product is. So as an entrepreneur, you're right, we go to a lot of things and we hear things we know because we're preaching on the radio every week, but it just refreshes you and there might be some golden nuggets someone has to say at that event that you didn't think about or you looked at it a different way and then we come and we share it with everybody. A better way to like we did that bail thing because I told you that bail thing because we always said you got to have every every entrepreneur if you don't have an accountant accountant and an attorney and a good relationship not one that you just hired but a good relationship where if you call them you know this I'm about to do this. So how can I, the lawyer, you know, I need you to look at this document, whatever. The accountant, okay, I'm about to start this business. What's the best, you know, how can I work this out? And all these people need to have a relationship. Well, a gentleman took it to another level for me in one of the classes. And he was like, it's bail. As a business owner, you need bail. And I was like, bail? He was like, yeah, you need a banker, an accountant, an insurance person, and a lawyer. That's right. He said, and they all need to know each other. Yes, they do. And it was so funny because somebody came into my office and asked for those things and I was like, here's your banker, I'm the accountant, here's the insurance guy, here's the lawyer. Right. We all know each other. I love that. And he was like, oh, I was like, yeah. And then I realized he wasn't serious. But just the fact that you were able to leverage those relationships and knowing that putting yourself in a position of networking and making it a collaborative effort puts you in a position for your sustainability, right? And then even with some of the nuggets that were being dropped that you had mentioned as far as like our networks of people that we're around. So one of the motivational speakers that I have been listening to most recently, Jim Rohn, he had mentioned some things way back when as far as the five closest people that are around you, right? So if you're in a position where you're networking, who are you surrounding yourself around? And then also another nugget that was just recently dropped, Issa Rae had mentioned some things about if you're networking, you're always looking to network up, but why not network with the people who are next to you? Because you're trying to gain the same resources, and if you do it collaboratively, just think how much more impactful that will be for you. So well, think about it is that you got to when you're networking or when you're joining different chambers or joining different groups, Rhonda and I, both members of sorority, and there are a vast range of vast range of people, income levels, experiences, and you never know what you don't know.

0:18:17
You've got a divine eye.

0:18:18
I am part of the body.

0:18:19
Now, who you with?

0:18:20
I ain't with nobody yet, but you know, you talk about that.

0:18:23
OK, OK.

0:18:24
We were two different people. I was going to say, let me find out your organization. We were two different people. Okay, so we were two different people. But the other side to it is it creates a different look because some of my friends are political, so when I have a question politically, they can answer that question. Some of them, I mean, the doctor's question, because that's real. When you sitting at home at night, you're like, oh my god, what is this? But just being able to contact someone. Education. Got children. Yeah. You know, you don't know, I don't know the school district, so I called a person that does know the school district. So it's, again, but it's also you have to do the work, because you have to be a resource to people. Absolutely. Right. You have to go both ways. You have to go both ways. So I teach, I teach my business owners, my entrepreneurs, to have a top 100. And in the top 100 is somebody in every specific line of work. So you got your air condition guy, you got your repairman, you got your lawyer, you got your financial person, you got your house cleaners, right? These are the businesses that I recommend at all times. Like I trust in these people, I believe in these people. But what that does is that does make me resourceful and that's why it's so good to have like a chamber on your you know behind you because you can have many different resources many different resources and the thing about it is when you and you are a member of that chamber you got privileges absolutely you come to me and you talk to me and you a member of the chamber I'm wide open and we talking I'll talk to you first thing I'm asking are you a member of the chamber you're gonna say no well I'm gonna try to figure out who is the resource that can give you the information that you need because I got 400 other people who pay a membership every month that they deserve that privilege to be able to have access to that information. You get the bennies. You know what's funny is that when COVID hit small businesses that were not part of chambers and did not have mentors or anybody were they they were exposed because they were out there on their own. Exactly. And we preach all the time, join a chamber of commerce. If you've started a new business, if you have a business, if you've been in business a hundred years, join a chamber. Join one, if not a couple. You know what I mean? Because you need to constantly network. Because what happened is that I was having a problem. I've been banking with a particular bank, Chase. See, I had been banking with Chase for over 20 years, but then when it came time for them to do my PPP and get everything together, they didn't want to mess with me. Right. So I was like, okay, this don't make no sense. The little guy can't get no love. I'm putting my money in the bank every month for years and you can't help me out. So I said, let me call one of my chambers. Right. So I called the Las Vegas chamber and I spoke to my person. I said, listen, I'm having this issue. He said, we can fix that call so and so and so and so and they got you. And so then I started referring other small businesses like me to that particular bank and we made it happen. But you know I was really mad at Chase and so I was so mad I went and opened up a bank account with a different bank because I was like how you going to treat me like that. Well she did that because my situation was different because I put my application in my money came the next morning. And I'm sitting and I'm because you know we talking every day and I'm telling her I was like you know and I'm on my phone playing I was like oh they're not gonna give me this money because I'm hearing everybody else have all these issues and I'm like whatever so I'm talking to my girlfriend that's the banker one and I'm talking to her on the phone and I'm on my phone little phone watching TV keying in all my information and I was like oh she said what happened I said the money coming the next morning I said the money there she was like oh my god I was like oh my god so it was but you had a personal relationship with one of them no but no no no see a big bank okay I just my girl she wasn't my banker she was just my girlfriend that worked at the bank and she was on the phone with me while I was doing it because she was helping people with you know everybody's working from home she was helping people but she was sitting there she was like Leah that ain't happen for nobody she was like what in the world I was like I don't know y'all, but I'm just going to look at it.

0:22:27
That ain't nothing but God.

0:22:29
Nothing but. But what I can say is COVID exposed you. It exposed you, right? And with the exposure, now what are you going to do? Okay, because now we in it and we've been in it. It's not going anywhere. They're talking about a different vaccine the other day. I'm like, okay, so we on vaccine number 30. Okay, I'm done. Okay, so I'm just gonna wash my hands, stay clean. But as a business owner, cause a lot of small businesses came out of that.

0:23:01
Y'all gotta figure out how to maintain them.

0:23:03
Right, I didn't know what a CDFI was until after. In fact, I'm like, hold on, that my bank is not answering me. They're not getting me what I need. No one's giving me my answer. Somebody said, contact this CDFI. I contacted CDFI, my money was in the account. Well, the thing about it is that you, as an entrepreneur, it's like it's all about relationships, like real relationships. And understanding your product is very important, but understanding the numbers, understanding those numbers, because if you are not pricing, I remember talking to a different client and he collects sales tax and he was like, you know, it's not enough money.

0:23:38
It's not enough money.

0:23:39
I was like, well, you can't play with the sales tax money. That's not your money, right? That's not your money. You collected that money and you have to remit that money to somebody else. So it's your pricing of your product.

0:23:51
And he was like, but I can't go.

0:23:52
Well, then you need to do something else. And then he's like, well, what about the quality? I'm like, because one thing we always tell, well, especially if you have a job, you know before you become an entrepreneur if you can Make sure you own your house, right? My goodness buy your house first, please. Yeah, please I'm not the first thing you asked me when I came into your house

0:24:15
That was the first question first question

0:24:18
And the reason why we asked that is and I'll say it out loud You cannot pay your mortgage for three months and the bank will talk to you, they'll negotiate with you, whatever. We live in a very transient place. You don't pay your rent, you're homeless.

0:24:32
You're out.

0:24:33
And now you got other problems.

0:24:34
Right.

0:24:35
I think it's day, you know what day, it used to be day five, now it's day one. Now it's day one, right? And I'm like, you want to know what y'all, and this is just what, when you came in my office years ago, first thing, do you own your house? First thing is stabilize your family when you have the job. Now it doesn't have to be that $5,000. It could be 1,600 square feet. Is it your house? Can you make sure that your food, clothing, and shelter is taken care of because you're about to go on a road that you will never forget. Being an entrepreneur. And that road, while I enjoy it, it has bumps and bruises.

0:25:15
I love it.

0:25:16
I love it.

0:25:17
You know, baptism by fire.

0:25:18
You better have your mental health right.

0:25:21
You gotta have it. And again, you gotta have relationships because when I started my business, I lived in an apartment complex. So I went to the manager and said, hey, listen, believe it or not, my clients are fortune 500 and they don't pay on time. So I'm not late because I'm being ridiculous. I'm late because I'm waiting on a check from XYZ company to come. So if you could work with me, you know what I mean? And not be giving them these crazy fees and all this stuff, just work with me, I'll make sure when I can get it to you on the first, it's absolutely gonna be there. And if I can get it to you earlier, it will, but you gotta work with me cause I'm a small business owner. And he was like, okay, I understand. But I had to go in there and have that conversation. But then again, what if she didn't have that conversation? And what if the person on the other end said, you want to know what we got such a demand. We ain't got to deal with this with you. Right. So you're at the mercy of somebody else. And I tell you, no, I look here, get that mortgage. Get the mortgage. That's why you always treat people nice. So there was always a holiday card and there was always a bottle of wine. You know, not nothing fancy, you know, just, you know, $10 bottle of wine. Thank you very much. So people remember all of that because really they usually get people coming in screaming about oh, I saw a rat Oh, I did this that I need to paint and my neighbors too loud But when you're coming in happy, they happy to see you because you're not really complaining

Right in the relationships, right

I think that's probably the most important thing real That's why like so like after the pandemic like we go out and we go networking now, and I mean, we've been hot with networking in 2023. And now you're starting to see familiar faces, people know you, people start calling you by your name, they start hugging you, other people start wanting to come talk to you because other people see that that energy is being reciprocated. And it's just so important. So that's why it's important for us to really get out here, especially as entrepreneurs, to learn and know these people. It's a world of resources, it's a world of talent, it's a bunch of people and then us looking like us, you know, we've been undervalued so long. But I use that as my advantage. I love it. I need you. I'm like, Leah, can I get you?

0:27:27
I can get you and you probably work about a hundred thousand.

0:27:29
I got you with this kind of rate.

0:27:31
No, it's great. But the thing about it is, first of all, Toastmasters, we are meeting the third Thursday at Nevada Partners. For more information, please contact the chamber 702-648-6222. If you would like to be a member of the chamber 702-648-6222. And the reason why I know that they have done the work because I remember a decade ago somebody asked the question why should I be a member? Is my membership worth it? And what I can tell you now is they've done the work. Yeah, but they've done the work right and they offer a bunch of resources especially for you as an entrepreneur, but don't discount it. So the Latin Chamber, the Asian Chamber, the Henderson Chamber, the Las Vegas Chamber, the granddaddy of them all, the Las Vegas Chamber. You know find someone, a group that works for you. Get out there and become a member.

0:28:45
Definitely.

0:28:46
I mean they got chambers for LGBTQ, they got law enforcement, they got everything. They have the new African Chamber. It's a great deal of them.

0:28:57
Shout out to Joe Cato.

0:28:59
Yeah, Joe. Joe's amazing.

0:29:01
Again, a member of multiple chambers. North Las Vegas Chamber.

0:29:05
The thing about it is that just getting out there and don't be afraid to network. Just paying a membership is not going to get you there.

0:29:14
You got to network.

0:29:15
You got to get involved.

0:29:16
You got to get involved. Like you got to go to the gym. Volunteer.

0:29:19
You got to go to the gym.

0:29:20
Go to the gym. You got to get on the machine.

0:29:22
You got to pick up the weights.

0:29:23
You got to run on the thing.

0:29:24
You got to walk. You got to move. You got to move. You got to know how to move.

0:29:28
All right, so you want to know what y'all, I hate to bring, we got to bring to the end again. It's the end of the show.

0:29:32
It's not quit.

0:29:33
It's the end of the show.

0:29:34
Oh, man. It's the end of the show. Just remember that the Urban Chamber of Commerce is your small business advocate, and we would love for you all to come and join in our membership. I am thankful to be able to be the membership engagement manager alongside Mr. Brandon Ward as the business development executive.

0:29:47
So if any chamber is the best chamber, I would have to say it's the Urban Chamber.

0:29:51
You can talk to us.

0:29:52
You can talk to us.

0:29:53
So on that note, we got to go. Until next time, peace and blessings.

0:29:57
