Birmingham City Council has confirmed that it has appointed Joanne Roney CBE as its permanent Managing Director.
Starting the role in the Autumn, Joanne will return to the city where she began her career after seven years as Chief Executive of Manchester City Council.
Over the course of her time as Chief Executive of Manchester City Council, Joanne oversaw the transformation of many services, including Children’s Services. These had previously been classified as ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted in 2014, with them going on to receiving a ‘good’ rating in 2022. Joanne also served as Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s Lead Officer on Skills, Education and Work.

The Scottish Government has announced that investment is continuing to provide older people with hospital alternatives.
Investment worth £3.6 million is being put into the Hospital at Home for Older People programme, which allows people to be treated in a safe alternative to a hospital, as funding since 2020 comes to more than £15 million.
According to stats from Healthcare Improvement Scotland, the service has exceeded targets across a number of key areas including increasing total bed numbers, and the number of patients using it.

Carers UK has published a new report, marking the beginning of Carers Week 2024.
With the theme for this year’s Carers Week being ‘Putting carers on the map’ the report outlines how millions of unpaid carers don’t get a choice as to whether or not they take on that role. This comes thanks to a lack of alternative care options for their disabled, ill, or older relatives or friends.
The report also identified that a heavy toll is being taken on many in the role, with many respondents saying that the impact of providing unpaid care was more negative that it was positive.
