Verse Junior with Dewey and Jill.
This is a fun place for kids
to learn about God, the Bible,
and how much Jesus loves you.
So buckle up for today's story
because this is one adventure
you are not gonna wanna miss.
Let's go
Hi, Dewey.
What's up?
Hey.
How you been?
I'm all right.
Um, I'm glad we're meeting today, 'cause
I got some questions about something.
Oh, you do?
Yeah.
What kind of questions do you have?
Well, I went to church this past
Sunday, and some people- Mm … got
in a big old water tank and- Oh, yeah?
Yeah.
Usually I'm not…
I'm in kids church, and I don't
usually see that, and I saw it,
and I thought it looked really
fun, 'cause I do love to swim.
Okay.
So, w- how can I do that?
'Cause I wanna do that.
You, you wanna go swimming at church?
Yeah.
Well, what they did was not swimming.
Well, I couldn't hear very
well, 'cause, I mean, I had…
I was distracted.
I don't wanna talk about that.
That's okay.
But I just wanna do it, so what do I do?
Have you ever heard your children's
pastor talk about water baptism?
Yeah.
But I also sit next to Smartie, so
I'm a little distracted sometimes.
Okay.
I know it's something that we need to do.
Okay.
And then she goes through a bunch of talk,
and I just, I'm just gonna be honest.
I didn't- I appreciate the
honesty … I did not pay attention.
I appreciate the honesty.
I think that that's a common
thing in children's church.
Sometimes it's easier to pay attention
than other times, and not every
topic is our favorite to listen to.
Yeah.
And this might just be one
that isn't your favorite yet.
It might be.
It might be.
You never know.
So, what kinds of question…
Like, do you know what water baptism is?
Okay.
I just know it looks super fun.
'Cause you go down and you come
back up and you're all wet.
Who doesn't like to get wet?
I love it.
I, I mean, lots of people
don't like to get wet.
Maybe adults, but- I don't, I don't
particularly enjoy getting wet, um,
which is kind of ironic because I was
on the swim team when I was in school.
Maybe that's why.
You're sick of it.
I am sick of it.
That is exactly why.
Yeah.
The water isn't fun for me anymore.
It just, there's all, all the
memories of work in the water.
Yeah.
So I'm just done with it.
Anyway, but I have been
baptized, and that does not work.
How old were you?
Um, I was baptized when
I was about nine- Okay
the first time, and then I got
baptized again as an adult.
You got to do it twice.
Two times, yep.
Oh, okay.
So- Are you supposed to do it twice?
Not necessarily.
Okay.
Um, but you, you can do it more than once.
Can I do it every week?
I think that it might be a little
unnecessary to do it every week.
Oh, okay.
Um, it's, it's not just for fun.
Okay.
Like, it's, it's an important
symbol in our walk with God.
Okay.
One time, I was at the pool- Mm-hmm
… and this brother, sister, couple…
Not couple, but you know, brother,
sister- But this couple of kids
who were brothers and sisters?
Yeah.
They kept baptizing each other.
I watched it for a little bit, but
that was before I really knew anything.
Anyway.
Well, the, it's, that's different.
Like, it's, it's one thing
to pretend to water baptism.
They were pretending.
Exactly.
'Cause they were, like, pretending
to be a preacher, I think.
Exactly.
So that's, pretending is different,
but if you are actually getting
baptized, um, it, it is a, it's a
symbol, but it is an important symbol.
Like one of those on a drum?
No.
A symbol like a, something that-
shows the importance or, um, the
significance of something else.
Like a what?
Like a wedding ring is
a symbol of marriage.
Oh.
Like it's a symbol of your commitment.
Okay, yeah, 'cause when I see a
ring, I know that they're married.
Exactly.
If they wear it on that certain finger.
Right.
So water baptism is a symbol of our, um…
I don't wanna freak
you out with this word.
I don't wanna- What?
… scare you, but it's a symbol of our death
to ourselves and our life in Christ.
What?
It is a symbol of dying to our flesh.
What does that mean?
It means when you decide that you,
you don't care about what you want
and what you have going on, and
the only thing you care about is
what God has going on for you.
That's a great thing.
Yeah.
It's fantastic.
I wanna do this.
You wanna do a water baptism?
Yeah.
Have you been saved?
Do you have Jesus in your heart?
Yes.
I mean, I figured, but I thought I'd ask.
I did that a long time ago.
I've done that a lot of times.
In or- Well, that's, I mean,
that's important as well.
Um, if you wanna be baptized,
you need to be saved first.
I am.
Check.
So, check.
Got that one done.
Um, and you need to understand
what water baptism is.
Okay.
So I gotta- Decide I'm not
gonna do my stuff anymore.
I'm gonna do what- Right … God wants.
Right.
And so what you're doing is you are
publicly showing everyone that's
there, you know, um, that you are
serious about your walk with the Lord.
I'm serious.
And so you- I'm doing this.
So when they, when they dunk you in the
water- They dun- I watched that part.
Yeah.
Listen, sometimes it can
get real interesting.
Oh, yeah.
Some pastors go real heavy on the dunk.
Like, slam you down.
Yeah.
I'm thinking of one in particular.
I don't know if I should call him out.
I guess you better not.
I guess not.
But- He knows who he is, I bet … I
feel like a lot of people who listen
will know who he is, but he really
like, like almost like whammo them.
I mean, it's, it's not hard, it just-
It'd be easy for me … he's forceful.
Yeah.
I'm little.
Listen, Pastor Kerrye told me a story
once about a child that she saw in
children's church, that she had in
children's church, and when, like, when
the kids wanted to get baptized, she
would do the water baptism over them.
And so she was helping to baptize
this, this little girl, and this girl
was like a, a really good swimmer.
And so when she went to like dunk her
down in the water, this girl just floated.
And so she had to like push her down.
What?
What was- Why'd she have to push her down?
Because this girl just kept floating and
she had to get, she had to get submerged.
Oh.
Like the, the symbolism- Yeah, they
get it all wet … is you have to,
you have to be completely submerged.
Yeah.
Um, because the, the symbol is
like when you go down under the
water, it is a symbol of you being
buried and then coming up again.
Like Jesus did.
And being a new creation.
Exactly.
Yep.
Fun fact, Jesus got baptized.
What?
Yep.
Who, who baptized him?
His cousin.
God, the Father.
Well, no.
Um, it was John the Baptist.
I've heard of him.
Which is why we call him-
I've heard of him … Baptist.
Some translations- John the Bat … some
translations call him John the Baptizer.
Oh.
But he's- That was Jesus' cousin.
Yep, it was Jesus' cousin.
Um- My cousin can't do it.
That's okay.
Okay.
You don't have to have your cousin do it.
He's too little.
He's…
I, I wouldn't.
What's your cousin's name?
. Brutus.
Brutus?
That sounds…
They…
He's not gonna get very big.
He's not gonna get very big.
I think that's why they named
him Brutus, kind of as a joke.
Like calling a- 'Cause
Brutus t- … a big man tiny.
Yes.
Yes.
Gotcha.
In my head, if Jesus did it, I'ma do it.
What's the scripture about it?
So there are a couple of scriptures
about it, but the, probably the
most famous one, the best one is
in Matthew 28, which is the-- It's
28:19, so it's the Great Commission.
Sometimes…
Have you heard of the Great Commission?
I got distracted when you said 28:19.
Remember that movie?
Yeah.
I know.
28:19.
Yeah, code 28:19.
So it's Matthew 28:19, and it says,
this is in the, um, ESV, so I think it's
the Engli- English Standard Version?
Yeah.
Anyway, it says, "Go therefore and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them that, teaching them to
observe all that I have commanded you."
Okay.
So if Jesus included baptizing
in the Great Commission, I
feel like it's important.
Um, and then it, um-
It's important to note also, I
think, that, um, John the Baptist
didn't want to baptize Jesus.
Why?
He didn't think he was worthy.
Like, he- John the Baptist
knew who Jesus was.
Like, he knew the whole time that- Oh,
John didn't think that John was worthy.
Yeah.
John didn't think that John sh- was
worthy- Okay … of baptizing Jesus.
Okay.
Sorry, yeah, that, that did kinda
come out that John didn't think
Jesus was worthy of baptism.
I was like, "Well."
That's, that's not what it meant.
No.
All right.
Well.
So John the Baptist said,
"I don't, I don't want…
Like, I shouldn't be baptizing you.
You should be baptizing me."
And Jesus was like, "Mm-mm,
man, you're gonna baptize me."
Like, this is important.
So if Jesus did it, we need to do it.
Yeah.
Just like going to church.
Have you ever heard the verse, um, that
talks about, like, when God says, "Behold
is my Son in whom I'm well pleased"?
Yes.
That happened right
after Jesus was baptized.
Oh.
The dove came down and then-
Everything's coming together.
Yep.
So- I get it.
See?
So if, if it was important enough for
Jesus to do it, and then important
enough for God himself to proclaim
that this was His Son in whom He's
well pleased- He liked it … I
just feel like- I think I'll do it
it's an important thing to do.
Yeah.
But you definitely n- There are…
You need to be prepared.
Like, it isn't just, you know,
jumping up in the water tank.
You know, there are three questions
that they're gonna ask you.
Oh, a test.
It's not a test.
It's just confirmation.
Oh, this makes me nervous.
What do I, what do I do?
Well, you've already answered one of 'em.
What?
Like, have you asked Jesus
to live in your heart?
Yes.
Okay.
Yeah, yeah.
Um, the second question is, do you believe
that he, that Jesus died and rose again?
Yes.
Okay.
And then the third question is, are you
gonna serve him all the days of your life?
Yes.
Okay.
And then- But I'm gonna mess up sometimes.
I have to get- Well, that- … baptized
all over again … baptism
does not equal salvation.
Oh.
Baptism does not equal repentance.
That's a separate thing.
This is a symbol of- Oh,
yeah … that repentance.
Yeah, yeah.
You said that.
So you're still…
Like, you don't, every time you mess
up, you don't have to get re-baptized.
Good.
That might get old.
But if you get to a point where you
feel like your walk has been renewed
or that it needs to be refreshed or
renewed, you can get baptized again
in order to kind of refresh that
symbolic gesture and, and start anew.
Sometimes- I kinda hope I'm a one
and done How about don't walk away?
Yeah.
I don't, it's not necessarily
about walking away.
Sometimes using the, the wedding ring
symbol analogy, um, you know, sometimes
we get new fancy rings to show-
Oh, yeah … renewed commitment or-
That's true … extended commitment.
You know, or that we've, we've
established this and we, we've
reevaluated and we are still super
in it, and we're still really excited
about our marriage, and so we're gonna
celebrate it anew with this new thing.
And so- That makes sense … you
can celebrate and renew your
commitment to the Lord and showcase
it by having baptism again.
That's, that makes sense to me.
Yeah.
All right.
So- Well, let's go do it.
Well- Can you baptize me?
I cannot.
Oh.
I'm, I'm not ordained.
There's, like, you have to
be specially ordained through
various, you know- Oh, okay
churches and stuff.
So I just gotta ask the preacher to do it.
Yeah.
So at our church, there are scheduled
Sundays where we do baptisms, and
so you just talk to the pastor and
let him know that- Will you help me?
Yeah.
All right.
Of course.
So we'll just let him know that you
wanna be baptized, and we'll put you
on the list, and he'll let you know
what day, and you can let your whole
family know, and people can come and
cheer and it's, it's a super fun time.
It's like a good celebratory time.
Doing it.
Awesome.
And then we- I'm really excited
… and then we can go out to eat.
We can go out to eat.
Oh.
But listen, I've been packing on
some pounds, Dewey, so I don't
know if we can get ice cream.
Okay.
How about- Maybe we could get,
like, some carrot sticks … I
know a healthy place to eat.
Where's that?
It's that Magical Smoothie.

I thought it was Magical.
Is it Magical?
I don't know.
Well, I, I think it's Tropical,
which they've got some tasty stuff.
I'm all for it.
