The Lion Counseling Podcast helps men escape the cages that hold them back and become the Lions they were created to be. It exists to help men obtain success, purpose, happiness, and peace in their career and personal lives. The podcast is hosted by the founder of Lion Counseling, Mark Odland (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified EMDR Therapist), and Zack Carter (Counselor and Coach with Lion Counseling). In their podcasts, they address a variety of topics relevant to men, including: mental health, relationships, masculinity, faith, success, business, and self-improvement.
I believe in high standards. Jocko and Echelon Front talk a lot about standards, discipline, ownership, and execution. And they're right. Low standards will absolutely destroy teams. Low standards destroy marriages.
Mark Odland:They destroy health, finances, leadership, and our own character. As men, we need standards. But here's where I see high performing men struggle. Sometimes what they call high standards is actually fear in disguise. They're not just pursuing excellence.
Mark Odland:They're running from failure. They're not just holding the line. They're trying to avoid the shame. And they're not just being disciplined. They're trying to prove that they're enough, and that creates a different kind of energy.
Mark Odland:Healthy standards create strength. Fear based standards don't create strength. They create pressure. Healthy standards build people up. Fear based standards can crush people.
Mark Odland:Healthy standards are clear and firm. Fear based standards, they're anxious, rigid. They're never satisfied. A man may think he's leading with excellence, but his team experiences him as impossible to please. His wife experiences him as critical.
Mark Odland:His kids experience him as disappointed all the time, and he may not even understand why. Because in his mind, he's just trying to make everyone better. But underneath, there may be something else. Maybe he learned early that mistakes were unacceptable. Maybe love felt conditional.
Mark Odland:Maybe success became the way he earned approval or love from other people. Maybe failure felt absolutely humiliating, the emotion to avoid at all costs. Maybe even being average was dangerous. And so now as an adult, he cannot relax. He can't celebrate progress when it happens.
Mark Odland:He can't enjoy the victories. He can't tolerate imperfection. He can't receive the good things without scanning for what could go wrong next. Brothers, that is absolutely exhausting for him and for the people around him. That's why the deeper work matters.
Mark Odland:We do not want men to lower their standards. I don't want men to lower their standards. We want men to purify their standards. We want standards rooted in purpose, love, mission, and responsibility. Not fear, not shame, not anxiety.
Mark Odland:At Lion Counseling, I help high performing men understand what is driving their standards. Because when standards are clean, they produce strength. When they're contaminated by fear, they produce pressure and distance. If you're successful but never satisfied, or if the people closest to experience your standards as criticism, you can book a clarity call at escapethecagenow.com. Thanks.
