Welcome back to our Podcast about LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga where in today's podcast we will be talking about Episodes 7-9 and exploring the topics of slavery, systems of government, and character relationships within the game and how it differs from the cinematic experience.
A podcast by students enrolled in Film Studies/Gender Studies 404. Students will discuss topics of gender and identity in In Sound Mind, What Remains of Edith Finch, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
Hey, guys, welcome back. My name is Preston. I'm
Steven and I'm Colin. And we're back again on our
podcast. Talk about Lego Star Wars, the Skywalker
saga. Today, we're looking at episode seven, eight
and nine, talking about the systems of government
slavery and the character relationships.
Looking at slavery, we're going to talk about the
first five minutes of the movie on Episode seven,
we saw Ray as a slave under to kind of her poor
living relationships. And in the game, it never
really showed much of that and never really gave
us, like, the dangers that she went through
Stafford Scavenger in on the crew, going through
the destroyed star destroyers never really showed
us the struggle that she went through until she
left U2 with thin, obviously.
And how badly she was treated by the person who
owned the camp. Yeah, as a scavenger, you got to
find different debris and stuff flying around.
Jack, who and what she would do is bring it back.
And that's how she would get her portions for food.
And we saw that she was treated pretty poorly,
getting less portions than the other people
because she was a female there. And it was just
hard to see how poorly she was treated. And I feel
like the game kind of just skipped over a lot of
that. But also movie seven. And I just did not
talk about slavery as much as one through sister.
Yeah, that's true. It's not the only thing that
was actually missing from this. A big part of the
movies is actually the system of government that's
going on. And that's the first order and then
ultimately the final order. And, you know, in the
movies, it's a huge plot point. You know, their
rise and take over trying to basically emulate
what the empire did and eventually, you know, do
more and exceed what the empire did. So with that
missing, you don't really, you know, get a feel of
a lot, I guess, of what's important in the story.
Like, you experience things very differently than
a moviegoer would, I guess is my point through
that. Yeah. And, you know, kind of at the start of
the movie seven, we kind of have the first order,
but we also have the republic, which is just not
mentioned within the game. And as we know from the
movies, the star power base is operational and it
does fire once in the movies. I believe it
destroys coarsen and I think it's five or six
other planets, planets or at least a total of six
planets. And that was the New Republic, like that
was what replaced the empire, which obviously does
rise again as we see in Movie nine, which is
depicted. But the mention of The New Republic, I
guess, that came to be is just not mentioned. It's
kind of tossed aside. And we just don't see the
government power struggle, which seems to be the
main focus on. Movie seven and nine in the New
Resistance, so, yeah,
so next we're going to talk about character
relationships. And to start, I'm going to talk
about Kyle and Ray's relationship, and they have
quite the interesting relationship in the in the
video game. We always see Kieran shirtless when
he's talking to her. They're admired in the force.
So they are able to communicate with one another.
And whenever they communicate with each other, we
always see Kylo Ren shirtless extremely more than
he is in the movies. In the movies, he's only
shirtless and probably three scenes max in the
game. He's shirtless more than he is, has a shirt
on. They even have a shirt shirtless and
characters you to play as. So it's quite
interesting to see how in the game they decided to
go more with the shirtless Kylo Ren over the just
normal killoren in his normal suit and mask. Yeah,
it really weirded out the relationship between
them for me and not Canali, but another
relationship that was visible and evident. In the
last trilogy was Luke and Red, and, you know, in
the movies, Luke is a father figure to Ray and
kind of replaces her family and just gives her
what she needs
and in the game. I did not get any type of vibe
that Ray liked Luke as a father, I just thought,
you know, Master Paduan relationship classic, you
know. But nothing nothing to do with family at all,
and I think that that definitely, definitely was
missing and just kind of messed with the character
development in the game, because then you don't
get a lot of what like who Ray is. And then the
last moment of, oh, hi, I'm Ray Skywalker. Just
like it doesn't have any meaning, really. And it
just that just didn't sit right with me. I think
they could have done a lot better in that in that
specific area. Yeah, I would I would agree. I felt
like a lot of the relationships were kind of like
kind of pushy within the game. I'm going to talk
about Finn and.
Can't remember her name right now, Rose. That
relationship within the movies was forced enough,
as is, but in the game, it just feels like not
evident. They just didn't exist. There was no you
got to play one mission is them doing the gambling
thing and finding the master coder. But that was
that was it. There was no concern, Uncrate. There
was no relationship drain between those two in
episode nine either. It was just like nonexistent.
I will say, though, I did read an article and in
the article there was a quote that says Female,
that video game characters are consistently shown
as beautiful, busty, scantily clad sets objets.
Women in video games are also underrepresented in
marginalises. Games rarely depict female heroes,
even when a game has a female lead. She is likely
to be a sexual objectified as example by two
mothers, Laura Craft and I will say, I think Lego
Star Wars editor job of not sexualizing any of the
characters within the game. I mean, they are Legos,
which made it probably a little easier. But there
is, you know, slave labor. We talked about it in
the last episode. They removed her cleavage as a
character. There's no they don't. They did a great
job not sexualizing any characters within the den.
Yeah, this game really showed kind of how up to
times it was in the last little Star Wars game.
There was there was cleavage on slave. And, you
know, when I can't remember where I saw I was I
think it was on Twitter where it was actually a
big thing like that. It was taken out and not in a
negative way. It was in a positive way, like, hey,
good job and I'm in complete agreement. I think
it's more up to the times. I mean, again, it is a
Lego game, so it is a lot easier to, you know,
take that stuff out. But I think when it's the
small things and small steps that shows the
biggest progress sometimes. And, you know, hey,
good for Lego.
That's our podcast of the latest Star Wars, the
Star Wars idea. We thank you all for listening. We
hope you enjoyed our.
