stephen_robles:
Welcome to the Apple Insider podcast. This is your host, Steven Robles. And today we're going to talk about 16.4 for iOS. It is imminent, probably coming Tuesday, March 28th. New leaked images from the iPhone 15 Pro. New leaked images of the iPhone 15 Pro. One change I am not happy about. We're going to discuss that. And we might get into some AI stuff and I switched my email provider like at midnight the other night. And so we're going to talk about that too. This episode is brought to you by where you can find and book a top rated doctor today using their free app. Fast growing trees where you can buy trees and ferns for your outside. Fast growing trees where you can buy stuff for your home and collide. And joining me this week is my friend across the pond who I haven't talked to in weeks. William Gallagher, how's it going?

wiliam_gallagher:
It's frantic over here. I'm trying to grab all my favorite TikTok videos and save them before the world caves in. That's what it

stephen_robles:
Are

wiliam_gallagher:
is.

stephen_robles:
you are you scrolling tiktok William? I need to know are you scrolling there?

wiliam_gallagher:
Funny

stephen_robles:
You're

wiliam_gallagher:
enough,

stephen_robles:
not

wiliam_gallagher:
BBC here in the UK suddenly started adopting TikTok and they were pushing it quite hard. And then they stopped mentioning it. And now recently they've banned it from staff iPhones. The only thing is, unless you're actually working on TikTok for the BBC and a lot of journalists are, the BBC channel continues, the staff weren't able to install TikTok in the end. So

stephen_robles:
Hmm.

wiliam_gallagher:
how much of this is show and how much of Israel? I don't know. But if the BBC doesn't support TikTok, well, I'm getting out of there. No.

stephen_robles:
Now listen, we're gonna talk about TikTok. We're gonna talk about TikTok later. I'm in there. I'm scrolling on the TikTok. I'm seeing

wiliam_gallagher:
Right?

stephen_robles:
funny videos. I'm learning things.

wiliam_gallagher:
Are you seeing

stephen_robles:
I

wiliam_gallagher:
dancing

stephen_robles:
mean,

wiliam_gallagher:
twerking schoolgirls? Which is, every time I've tried it, that's the first thing it's shown me. I mean, before I've done anything else, that's when I get in and it's deeply uncomfortable

stephen_robles:
No,

wiliam_gallagher:
and I go away. I'm

stephen_robles:
William.

wiliam_gallagher:
not sure if I'm doing it right, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I'm not sure if I'm

stephen_robles:
Listen.

wiliam_gallagher:
doing it right. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I'm

stephen_robles:
No,

wiliam_gallagher:
not sure if I'm

stephen_robles:
no,

wiliam_gallagher:
doing it

stephen_robles:
that

wiliam_gallagher:
right. I'm not

stephen_robles:
algorithm,

wiliam_gallagher:
sure if I'm doing it right.

stephen_robles:
the algorithm just knows what you want to see right from the first video. That's the problem. I'm seeing cool film

wiliam_gallagher:
Right.

stephen_robles:
videos and gear and funny

wiliam_gallagher:
No, no, no, no, no, let's just back up a bit. What could possibly trigger this? What?

stephen_robles:
videos with dogs.

wiliam_gallagher:
Google search, if I ever... No, I don't want to think about that. Anyway, yes, no, yes.

stephen_robles:
to.

wiliam_gallagher:
Um...

stephen_robles:
Yes, no,

wiliam_gallagher:
..

stephen_robles:
yes, I'm

wiliam_gallagher:
..

stephen_robles:
just kidding. No, no.

wiliam_gallagher:
..

stephen_robles:
Listen,

wiliam_gallagher:
.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

stephen_robles:
I am not implying anything about your internet activity, William. I will say, TikTok does try to put things in front of you like a variety of things to see what you watch and how many times it loops,

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
everything like that. So it is very quick to trigger the algorithm, but it's not like the first time you open the app, it knows what you want to see. So

wiliam_gallagher:
In all

stephen_robles:
just

wiliam_gallagher:
seriousness,

stephen_robles:
a side note.

wiliam_gallagher:
both times it was

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
literally the first image with a deeply uncomfortable

stephen_robles:
Yeah,

wiliam_gallagher:
thing

stephen_robles:
and

wiliam_gallagher:
with it

stephen_robles:
it's bad.

wiliam_gallagher:
and that's that's scary I thought but yes

stephen_robles:
It is

wiliam_gallagher:
you're going to say

stephen_robles:
unfortunate.

wiliam_gallagher:
something serious.

stephen_robles:
Well, so that is unfortunate. I will say in order to train your TikTok algorithm, especially if you sign up as a male, it is going to try to show you things. You have to tap and hold on the video and you say not interested in this. And so like

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.

stephen_robles:
there

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.

stephen_robles:
is a mechanism where you could say like, don't show me videos like this. And if you do that a couple of times, like it does, you know, retrain itself and it stops showing you that. And then you can see like what my algorithm shows you, which is like, you know, tech videos. How to film things

wiliam_gallagher:
Hmm.

stephen_robles:
cool lighting stuff you're on there. No, I'm just kidding. I've never seen you on there William So

wiliam_gallagher:
Okay.

stephen_robles:
I was I was hoping for something like paparazzi style footage of William walking down the street But I didn't get any of that

wiliam_gallagher:
And now

stephen_robles:
the

wiliam_gallagher:
I've

stephen_robles:
algorithm

wiliam_gallagher:
managed

stephen_robles:
didn't

wiliam_gallagher:
to

stephen_robles:
find

wiliam_gallagher:
succeed.

stephen_robles:
it

wiliam_gallagher:
There's a thing in the UK called a D notice where we're able to stop all publication of certain things, but I'm not supposed

stephen_robles:
Oh,

wiliam_gallagher:
to talk about it. So, you know,

stephen_robles:
oh, sorry. Sorry. OK, OK, we

wiliam_gallagher:
right.

stephen_robles:
won't get. All right. Anyway, we'll talk about TikTok a little bit later when we talk about US law and big tech or whatever, a short segment at the end. But anyway, two five star reviews just want to thank stuffing Zee from Great Britain and Ben Cook in the United Kingdom. He just discovered the Apple Insider podcast last month. So thank you for

wiliam_gallagher:
No,

stephen_robles:
those

wiliam_gallagher:
no,

stephen_robles:
five star reviews.

wiliam_gallagher:
no,

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
no, no. Not THE Ben Cook.

stephen_robles:
Well,

wiliam_gallagher:
THE Ben

stephen_robles:
I don't

wiliam_gallagher:
Cook

stephen_robles:
know.

wiliam_gallagher:
from Great... Oh, right. Excellent. Okay.

stephen_robles:
Yeah,

wiliam_gallagher:
We're

stephen_robles:
listen

wiliam_gallagher:
in...

stephen_robles:
to both both five star

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
reviewers

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
this week are from your neck of the woods. So you guys, you guys got it going on. I appreciate you.

wiliam_gallagher:
It's

stephen_robles:
Yeah,

wiliam_gallagher:
like,

stephen_robles:
that's

wiliam_gallagher:
yeah.

stephen_robles:
nice. All right, let's talk about Iowa 16.4 William, because the release

wiliam_gallagher:
years.

stephen_robles:
candidate went out to developers. If you're on that beta train, you're probably using the release candidate right now. I would, I am pretty certain now I'm not a leaker, as you know, William, but I would say with like 98% surety assurance that Iowa 16.4 is going to release this Tuesday, March 28th. And you know how I know that, William? Because that is when Apple Music Classical

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
has been officially announced to launch. That is when Sonos has announced that spatial audio is coming to the Sonos app. Also the Sonos era speakers are coming on Tuesday. So I feel like 98% sure 16.4 will be publicly available Tuesday, March 8th. Do you have

wiliam_gallagher:
Well,

stephen_robles:
a rebuttal?

wiliam_gallagher:
if you're gonna base things on evidence, I mean, come on. Okay?

stephen_robles:
I know you're all about the Apple car shooting in the wind, but I think we're gonna see it on Tuesday I'm very excited to play around with

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah,

stephen_robles:
Apple

wiliam_gallagher:
me

stephen_robles:
Music

wiliam_gallagher:
too.

stephen_robles:
Classical I'm

wiliam_gallagher:
Exactly,

stephen_robles:
not actually

wiliam_gallagher:
same

stephen_robles:
talked to

wiliam_gallagher:
here.

stephen_robles:
you about it because it came out the week I was gone you and Wes talked about it I talked about it again

wiliam_gallagher:
Yes.

stephen_robles:
because I can't shut up about it. What do you think about Apple Music Classical?

wiliam_gallagher:
I'm thrilled that it's coming.

stephen_robles:
Yes,

wiliam_gallagher:
I mean

stephen_robles:
yes.

wiliam_gallagher:
compared to you I'm nothing of classical music listener but I'm in Birmingham where we have the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Mahler's one of my favourites. I will be going

stephen_robles:
Yes.

wiliam_gallagher:
in partly from a technical thing to see how have they figured out the search of what sounds like quite complicated but also just to have a good old relish in there.

stephen_robles:
Yes.

wiliam_gallagher:
That's what I'm going to be doing.

stephen_robles:
I'm very excited to see how search and browse work and what other differences there are between that and the main Apple Music app. I'm also curious, like, if I want to listen to Apple Music Classical in that experience on things not being airplayed to, how easy is that? Again, the app is only coming to iPhones, supposedly not iPad

wiliam_gallagher:
Mm-hmm.

stephen_robles:
or Mac, which is somewhat unfortunate. And also, like, I don't know how the Sonos app would interact with Apple Music Classical like if AirPlay actually does Dolby Atmos audio to a pair of Sonos speakers, I'm not sure. So we're going to test all of that, but we'll definitely talk about it in depth on the next episode, because I'm very excited about that. Now some of the internal like code leaks, someone has found, this was shrimp apple pro, I believe, was it shrimp apple? I don't know that name is so funny.

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
No, this is developer Aaron on Twitter. Sorry, shrimp apple pro had the iPhone 15 pro images we'll models are listed in the 16.4 release candidate software. Now I'm very curious if there are actually new AirPods coming close to the 16.4 release or even as soon as next week. I don't know what AirPods it would be. I mean it feels like AirPods 3 came out fairly recently like within the last year maybe it's a little a year and a half ago. AirPods Pro 2 are pretty recent. I don't think AirPods Max 2 would come now. Supposedly there's an AirPods case along in the 16.4 code that might be released along with these AirPods. I don't think there's gonna be a case for the AirPods Max, but I don't know. Do you think there's gonna be new AirPods?

wiliam_gallagher:
Well, I read the same thing you do the code references, but all I see are the numbers. Why don't you think an airport max is possible?

stephen_robles:
I don't know. I mean, I don't, I don't, if they're going to release a new model, AirPods Max, I feel like it was, it's going to have USB C. I mean, the iPhone is going to have USB C most likely this year. I don't think they

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
would release another lightning connector AirPods Max, but I also don't think

wiliam_gallagher:
No.

stephen_robles:
they would release a USB C AirPods Max without an iPhone with USB C. Because still, even the AirPods

wiliam_gallagher:
Okay.

stephen_robles:
Pro that just launched is lightning. And I feel like the AirPods connectivity and connection port is to what the iPhone is. So I feel like AirPods Max 2 is more like a winter release, like right before the holidays, after we get a USB-C iPhone. And because there's a case also included in the code, I mean, unless they're talking about that lingerie style AirPods Max case that comes with it, I don't know what kind of case would require a model number. So, sorry, did that make you uncomfortable that I say in saying the lingerie style case?

wiliam_gallagher:
No,

stephen_robles:
I didn't

wiliam_gallagher:
the

stephen_robles:
wanna

wiliam_gallagher:
bra

stephen_robles:
say bra

wiliam_gallagher:
shaped

stephen_robles:
style case.

wiliam_gallagher:
one, that's exactly what it was.

stephen_robles:
Okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
I was just trying to work out, was there any intelligence in that? And there was, wasn't there? It would put them to sleep. That's the phrase I'm looking for. But it's

stephen_robles:
It

wiliam_gallagher:
just

stephen_robles:
puts

wiliam_gallagher:
the

stephen_robles:
it to

wiliam_gallagher:
fact

stephen_robles:
sleep.

wiliam_gallagher:
that it seems to be coming around the same time as Apple Music Classical. There's

stephen_robles:
That's

wiliam_gallagher:
no possibility

stephen_robles:
it.

wiliam_gallagher:
of a version

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
of Max that

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
could do it, is there? It's just the fact that it seems to be coming around the same time as Apple Music Classical. There's no possibility

stephen_robles:
Oh.

wiliam_gallagher:
of a version of Max that could do it, is there?

stephen_robles:
Wow, you might have just changed my mind slightly. That would make sense, especially if there was some kind of high fidelity audio codec that would allow a new pair of AirPods Max to have full on Dolby Atmos or lossless from

wiliam_gallagher:
in.

stephen_robles:
an iPhone to an AirPods Max. So that is a very curious theory, William. We'll have to see

wiliam_gallagher:
Well,

stephen_robles:
next week.

wiliam_gallagher:
something less than a theory. Not even a hunch. What's between a hunch and a theory?

stephen_robles:
uh... an intuition

wiliam_gallagher:
Nothing. OK.

stephen_robles:
a uh...

wiliam_gallagher:
An intuition.

stephen_robles:
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

wiliam_gallagher:
Not even that. Nothing sparking it. It's purely the coincidence of the dates that's making me wonder.

stephen_robles:
Okay,

wiliam_gallagher:
But,

stephen_robles:
okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
hmm.

stephen_robles:
Yeah, I don't know. I'm curious. I'm also very hopeful at least that 16.4 will be the version of Iowa 16 that fixes all the bugs. There's so many bugs, William. I don't know if you experience this, but I have family members asking me, how come my iPhone keeps shutting off? How come I keep seeing a black screen? Why is

wiliam_gallagher:
Well.

stephen_robles:
this broken? I mean, it has been bad. I mean, I know everybody's mileage may vary, but how's the bug situation been for you on 16.3?

wiliam_gallagher:
Well, mostly fine, except I think I'm now wondering if it's not. I had a thing where I wondered if I was going mad, because I did a certain shortcut that required you to say, don't ask me before running it, and it seemed to be fine. I told other people, they said that option doesn't exist for this particular type of function. When I went back to chat to go, no, ha, look, they were right, and I was wrong.

stephen_robles:
Oh man.

wiliam_gallagher:
But it worked

stephen_robles:
Well,

wiliam_gallagher:
for me. And

stephen_robles:
yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
I don't know whether I've just mixed in a developer update to change that or something or I've gone mad and you're looking at me like clearly I've just gone mad so thanks that's really helpful no no it's worse now

stephen_robles:
No, no,

wiliam_gallagher:
okay

stephen_robles:
no, no, no, no,

wiliam_gallagher:
enough

stephen_robles:
no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no so,

wiliam_gallagher:
Right.

stephen_robles:
so bad in Iowa 16 on the Mac. No request is able to be approved. Like it just

wiliam_gallagher:
goodness.

stephen_robles:
doesn't work. And they changed this in Iowa 16 where screen time requests, they used to live in the settings app, which was kind of annoying to get to. But you could always

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
approve like 15 minutes or an hour from the notifications. And so as long as I did that, even from my Apple Watch, it always went through, it was solid, no problem. They moved screen time requests from the settings portion messages.

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah?

stephen_robles:
One, it sucks. I'm sorry. I know that I don't use that kind of strong language on this show, typically, but I'm pretty upset.

wiliam_gallagher:
This

stephen_robles:
And

wiliam_gallagher:
is

stephen_robles:
I

wiliam_gallagher:
a

stephen_robles:
do

wiliam_gallagher:
family

stephen_robles:
think

wiliam_gallagher:
show,

stephen_robles:
that

wiliam_gallagher:
but even so, I think you can get away with that one. Yeah,

stephen_robles:
I'll bleep.

wiliam_gallagher:
okay.

stephen_robles:
Well, I'll tell you what, I'll bleep. I'll censor bleep it out and I'll let our listeners guess what word I said. It was nowhere near as vulgar

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh right,

stephen_robles:
as you assume.

wiliam_gallagher:
then you could bleep this way, because obviously the thing is that it sucks and it blows, don't you? So yes. So,

stephen_robles:
I'm

wiliam_gallagher:
a

stephen_robles:
sorry.

wiliam_gallagher:
line from The Simpsons, actually, but I love that line. Okay.

stephen_robles:
That's pretty good. I'll have to bleep

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
it all out, but that is pretty great. I'll tell you what, in the exclusive early

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
release version of this podcast, which you can either support us at patreon.com slash Apple Insider or directly an Apple podcast for just $5 a month, you get the ad-free version and I won't believe the words we said. And so just those who

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.

stephen_robles:
support

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.

stephen_robles:
the show will know the words that William and I said. But

wiliam_gallagher:
Is

stephen_robles:
anyway.

wiliam_gallagher:
this going to affect when I join some other social media platform now? I'm going to be listed as the guy who swears on the apple cider podcast. And

stephen_robles:
Yes,

wiliam_gallagher:
now

stephen_robles:
you

wiliam_gallagher:
more.

stephen_robles:
are the,

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah. OK.

stephen_robles:
you can have an explicit tag on the episodes that you're on. That's exactly

wiliam_gallagher:
Ha ha ha.

stephen_robles:
that's what's going to happen. Now so, so screen time request, I moved to messages. Hey, it does this weird thing now where because both my wife and I are parents in the iCloud family and we can both approve requests, any request gets sent to this like weird group message. So the

wiliam_gallagher:
Um.

stephen_robles:
request come through a group message between my son, my wife, and my wife. and myself and it's just weird. Like it muddies up the group text and I don't like the notifications there. Like it's weird. And then the request, you can see it in messages like on the Mac, but you can't approve it. There's no little drop down to approve it. It just doesn't work. If I try to approve it from the notification, it doesn't go through. The only place it really works, it doesn't work on the Apple Watch anymore, I have to do it on the iPhone and most of the time it takes two tries. Like anytime I need to add 15 minutes

wiliam_gallagher:
When

stephen_robles:
to an app because one of my kids have requested it. It takes like multiple tries, like at least two. And it's super annoying. And I hope 16.4 fixes. And that's all I have to say. That's all I have to say about that. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm

wiliam_gallagher:
Why

stephen_robles:
sorry.

wiliam_gallagher:
don't

stephen_robles:
I'm

wiliam_gallagher:
you

stephen_robles:
sorry.

wiliam_gallagher:
just

stephen_robles:
I'm sorry.

wiliam_gallagher:
tell your kid, tough? That's it, it's over. Here's the football.

stephen_robles:
Well,

wiliam_gallagher:
There's the

stephen_robles:
that's

wiliam_gallagher:
outside,

stephen_robles:
usually, yeah,

wiliam_gallagher:
yeah? Yeah. Yeah.

stephen_robles:
that's, I mean, that's usually what happens is like, sorry, I can't, and you can approve on device, but like the whole point of screen time so you can adjust the settings. And also, anytime I've needed to add a website to my child's screen time Safari browsing, because I want them to be able to see a website,

wiliam_gallagher:
Hmm.

stephen_robles:
like it doesn't work, like it just doesn't sync over the cloud. I have to do it manually on their device, like it is bad. So 16.4 has been super buggy, especially when it comes to screen time. really hoping that this fixes it maybe finally. We'll see. But anyway, I was 16.4. We'll probably see a Tuesday Apple music classical. Expect a long segment on the next episode because I'm very excited for that. Very cool.

wiliam_gallagher:
So do you expect that that's when we'll also see Mac OS Ventura 13.3 coming along? So that's when we'll also see Mac OS Ventura 13.3 coming along. So that's when we'll also see Mac OS Ventura 13.3 coming along. So that's when we'll also see Mac OS Ventura 13.3 coming along. So that's when we'll also see Mac OS Ventura 13.3 coming along. So that's when we'll also see Mac OS Ventura 13.3 coming along. So that's when we'll also see Mac OS Ventura 13.3 coming along

stephen_robles:
Yeah, I think it'll all come out because the release candidate was for all the things. It's for

wiliam_gallagher:
That's

stephen_robles:
all the things.

wiliam_gallagher:
true.

stephen_robles:
And this also is the HomeKit architecture update coming

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
into iOS, which, you know, how's your HomeKit doing? I know you were having some trouble

wiliam_gallagher:
I'm

stephen_robles:
there. Okay, okay. Okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
getting

stephen_robles:
Okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
there

stephen_robles:
Okay. Okay. Okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
slowly.

stephen_robles:
Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
I got

stephen_robles:
Okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
to a stage

stephen_robles:
Okay. Okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
a couple

stephen_robles:
Okay. Okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
of weeks ago just before you went away actually where Everything that was connected was working. I'm going

stephen_robles:
Okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
to leave it alone now for a bit But I need

stephen_robles:
Sure.

wiliam_gallagher:
to put the cameras back in I need to add I've forgotten what else I had I suppose I've forgotten it. I didn't use it so I don't need it, but yes, it's not been

stephen_robles:
Oh,

wiliam_gallagher:
a Falsome

stephen_robles:
home kit.

wiliam_gallagher:
experience

stephen_robles:
Oh, home

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah,

stephen_robles:
kit.

wiliam_gallagher:
my

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
home key problems came from changing Wi-Fi and also I had a problem with Apple IDs Apple ID problem is still going on. I re-subscribed

stephen_robles:
Ugh.

wiliam_gallagher:
to Netflix recently and it's not listed under my subscriptions under any of my Apple IDs, but

stephen_robles:
All

wiliam_gallagher:
they

stephen_robles:
right.

wiliam_gallagher:
still manage to take the money like they expect to. So something is very

stephen_robles:
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

wiliam_gallagher:
strange there, yes. Maybe it'll be

stephen_robles:
happening?

wiliam_gallagher:
fixed on Tuesday.

stephen_robles:
Well, yeah, we'll see. Again, I'm telling

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh,

stephen_robles:
you, bugs. It's

wiliam_gallagher:
wasn't

stephen_robles:
been weird.

wiliam_gallagher:
that the thing in the starter room? Star Trek Generations, I think, the new Enterprise. They didn't have tractor beams that are being installed on Thursday, I think it was. That's it. It's always next week when these things are coming.

stephen_robles:
That's right.

wiliam_gallagher:
So.

stephen_robles:
Well, yeah, we'll get next time next week. All right. All right. So I have to talk about these iPhone 15 pro images. This was shrimp Apple pro on Twitter. He has some supposed images,

wiliam_gallagher:
Sorry, it's

stephen_robles:
cat

wiliam_gallagher:
the name,

stephen_robles:
images.

wiliam_gallagher:
isn't it? Yes,

stephen_robles:
Oh, I

wiliam_gallagher:
okay.

stephen_robles:
know

wiliam_gallagher:
Okay.

stephen_robles:
it's that name is it's hilarious. So these new images of

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank

stephen_robles:
the

wiliam_gallagher:
you.

stephen_robles:
iPhone 15 pro, I'm going to do the feature run down in a second, like all the rumors put together, what we expect to see. But these images got me upset, William. Why?

wiliam_gallagher:
Huh?

stephen_robles:
Supposedly, yes it has USB-C, we see that most likely. The mute switch on the side of the phone that has been the same since the original iPhone. Flip it down, you're on silent, flip it up, you hear the ring, it might

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.

stephen_robles:
change

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.

stephen_robles:
to a button. Or maybe not even a physical button but some kind of like haptic button or something. And if that happens, again this is not for sure. This is shrimp apple pro. leaked cat image on Twitter. But if that changes from a physical toggle switch, I'm not going to be happy with him. I don't think I'm going to like that.

wiliam_gallagher:
I'm sorry. I'm very

stephen_robles:
I

wiliam_gallagher:
sorry.

stephen_robles:
feel

wiliam_gallagher:
I'm very

stephen_robles:
very

wiliam_gallagher:
sorry.

stephen_robles:
strongly for many years. I feel like that has been one of the unique things about the iPhone,

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you. Thank you.

stephen_robles:
even opposed to like all these Android phones, that mute switch, a, it's pretty fun to just fidget with if you're like bored or whatever,

wiliam_gallagher:
hips.

stephen_robles:
like I've just flipped it back and forth a lot of times, but also like just being able to I'm recording a podcast and I want to make sure my phone is on silent. Just being able to glance down and see that little orange line and know that my phone is on mute to not have that kind of visual and tactile mute switch. I don't know. I'm, I don't know. I don't, I don't think I'll like that. I'm not going to, I don't think I'm going to be crazy about losing that. What do you think William? Do you feel strongly

wiliam_gallagher:
I'm

stephen_robles:
about

wiliam_gallagher:
exactly

stephen_robles:
that?

wiliam_gallagher:
with you, actually.

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
I've always, I remember right at the start in 2007, seeing that thinking, oh, that's the way it should be. And

stephen_robles:
That's

wiliam_gallagher:
yet again,

stephen_robles:
it!

wiliam_gallagher:
Apple's thought it through. Actually, I do also remember a relative handing me the phone and saying, it doesn't make a ring, it doesn't make a ring. They handed it to me, put it in my hand and I immediately handed it back and it was ringing because they'd flick the switch. So maybe it's not obvious to everybody, but it's obvious to us now, all these years later, and it's brilliant. So I'm sure it'll be fine. Fine. I just,

stephen_robles:
I mean, it also...

wiliam_gallagher:
you're saying that it might not be an actual button, and it could be this haptic thing. I get why replacing real buttons with haptic ones means that the casing is more waterproof, but this is a wacking

stephen_robles:
Sure.

wiliam_gallagher:
big hole at the bottom with USB-C or lightning or something. There's steady water in there, isn't there,

stephen_robles:
Right,

wiliam_gallagher:
sir? So. It's a little bit of a shame. I don't know if you can see it, but it's a little bit of a shame.

stephen_robles:
I mean, I get, I mean, they're pretty waterproof right now. I know Apple doesn't say waterproof, it's water resistant up to a certain amount

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank

stephen_robles:
of feet

wiliam_gallagher:
you. Bye.

stephen_robles:
or meters or whatever, but I've dunked my iPhone underwater multiple times. I actually did it to record the Apple Watch Ultra like depth screen,

wiliam_gallagher:
Hmm.

stephen_robles:
and my phone was like underwater recording video never have had an issue. Now I know water resistance can decrease over time depending on sealing and all that kind of stuff. But this mute switch is just such a tactile. like firm, like I just love the feeling of that mute switch. And again,

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.

stephen_robles:
maybe there'll be some visual distinction. If it's a physical button that actually presses in and out, I guess they could do something where you see little splash of color when it is pressed in as opposed to deep rest. But I would be sad to lose that toggle switch. I just, I think it's a great feature, the hardware feature of the phone. And I would have been good with that being like that forever, but I don't know.

wiliam_gallagher:
But hang on, this is specifically the iPhone 15 Pro, not the regular iPhone 15, right?

stephen_robles:
Supposedly, supposedly.

wiliam_gallagher:
In which case, the iPhone 15 Pro will have an always-on screen. So perhaps it could have an on-screen indicator,

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
although you wouldn't want that interrupting things, would you? So, I don't know. And... And... And... And... And... And... And... And... And... And... And... And... And...

stephen_robles:
I don't know. I mean, if you have always on display, which I'm going to be honest, I don't have always on display enabled. I've turned that off. I might change it depending on focus mode. That's one of the changes in Iowa 16.4 is you can actually decide whether you want always on enabled for a focus mode or disabled, but I've kept mine off. I don't, uh, I don't care for it. So I don't know.

wiliam_gallagher:
I'm

stephen_robles:
I've

wiliam_gallagher:
expecting

stephen_robles:
just seen that little title switch.

wiliam_gallagher:
to like it a lot. Just ever since Always On was available and I didn't buy an iPhone 14 Pro, I just seem to be very conscious of how many times I pick up my phone to tap the screen to see something on it. So in the fact, I've not been, I was live actions and things, live activities rather.

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
It's just been able to glance and see that straight away. I am expecting when I buy my 15 Pro, unless the rumors of the price being incredibly higher are, then I will look forward to Always On and I will cherish

stephen_robles:
Yeah, that was gonna be my next question.

wiliam_gallagher:
it. And I will look after it properly. Okay,

stephen_robles:
That was gonna be my next question

wiliam_gallagher:
sorry.

stephen_robles:
if you were gonna be upgrading, but I knew you didn't update to the 14 Pro, so I figured this was it. You're gonna be upgrading.

wiliam_gallagher:
Yes,

stephen_robles:
I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading. I'm gonna be upgrading.

wiliam_gallagher:
although I did hear those rooms at the price would be dramatically more and of course I'm outside the US this year and the album would be quite a big thing of keeping the price the same for the US and didn't mention that it was raising it everywhere else. So will they do the same thing? Raise it more outside the States? What price is a price that will make me not upgrade?

stephen_robles:
Well, and also the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which I tweeted the other day and I posted on mess it on. I have not done the max ever. I did it for like one week with the iPhone 10s Max. That was the first max

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you. Thank you.

stephen_robles:
size phone. I tried it. It felt too big. My pinky felt like it was like straining, just trying to hold the phone up with

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
my hand. And so I have not tried a Max phone since. But I will say the 14 Pro Max. pro, the battery life has been a little abysmal. Like it has not been great.

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh.

stephen_robles:
I've had to charge it throughout the day. Some most days, like it won't last till the very end of the day. And so I've seen a lot of battery reports on social media where people also feel like it's not great. So battery life is one,

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you. Thank you.

stephen_robles:
but because I'm also working from home now, I'm not out and about walking around as much. I think I might like a little bigger screen for how much I'm on the phone and how much I do on the phone. I'm sitting out on the patio and I don't want to bring my iPad. Maybe that little larger screen would be nice. And so I don't know, I'm thinking actually about the Pro Max in this 15 cycle. Would you ever be tempted by the Pro Max?

wiliam_gallagher:
Not anymore. I had the 10S Max and I thought it was wonderful and I liked it immensely. But then the 11 Pro was the next one I had and I loved that. The difference seemed so big for me in the smaller size, if you do know what I mean. I just preferred it so much I wouldn't go back. But you're

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
worrying me there about battery because even though I didn't buy the 14 Pro, last night I was considering getting one because of I presume the battery was better and there's a thing going on I could do with

stephen_robles:
No.

wiliam_gallagher:
an extra battery life for it, but now you may have just

stephen_robles:
No, yeah, it's not.

wiliam_gallagher:
saved me Quite a lot of money there. So thank you

stephen_robles:
Just buy the Apple MagSafe battery pack.

wiliam_gallagher:
very much

stephen_robles:
Don't get a 14 Pro.

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh,

stephen_robles:
You'll get way much better battery than that.

wiliam_gallagher:
actually, why don't

stephen_robles:
I'm not sure if you can see it, but I'm not sure if you can see it. I'm not sure if you can see it, but I'm not sure if you can see it. I'm not sure if you can see it, but I'm not sure if you can see it. I'm not sure if you can see it. I'm not sure if you can see it. I'm not sure if you can see it. I'm not sure if you can see it. I'm not sure if you can see it. I'm not sure if you can see it. I'm not sure if you can see it. I'm not sure if you can see it. I'm not sure if you can see it

wiliam_gallagher:
I just buy two iPhone 13s and

stephen_robles:
Oh,

wiliam_gallagher:
stick them

stephen_robles:
you

wiliam_gallagher:
together?

stephen_robles:
can do that. Sure, sure.

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah,

stephen_robles:
Sure.

wiliam_gallagher:
we have a solution. Thank you. Okay.

stephen_robles:
Yeah, there you go. No problem. I would be curious, reverse wireless charging has been rumored the last like four years. I would be curious if that comes with the 15 Pro. Like put your AirPods on the back of the phone, give it a little charge, but. It's a little bit of a shame. I don't know if you can see it, but it's a little bit of a shame. I don't know if you can see it, but it's a little bit of a shame. I don't know if

wiliam_gallagher:
Hmm.

stephen_robles:
you can see it, but it's a little bit of a shame. I don't know if you can see it, but it's a little bit of a shame. I don't know if you can see it, but it's

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah,

stephen_robles:
a little bit of a

wiliam_gallagher:
but

stephen_robles:
shame.

wiliam_gallagher:
that means putting the glass face down and I tend to resist that.

stephen_robles:
because you

wiliam_gallagher:
Because

stephen_robles:
go no case.

wiliam_gallagher:
I'm careful

stephen_robles:
You're

wiliam_gallagher:
of

stephen_robles:
a

wiliam_gallagher:
my

stephen_robles:
no case

wiliam_gallagher:
gear,

stephen_robles:
guy.

wiliam_gallagher:
you're not, you see. So, yes.

stephen_robles:
I have hit my Apple Watch so many times on my kitchen counter

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh, I didn't.

stephen_robles:
and doorframe now. My Apple Watch Ultra, it's got noticeable dings.

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
It's got noticeable dings and I think of you every time I hit it on a doorframe and

wiliam_gallagher:
The other day

stephen_robles:
just

wiliam_gallagher:
I

stephen_robles:
I just want

wiliam_gallagher:
twitched

stephen_robles:
you to know.

wiliam_gallagher:
for no reason and I thought Stevens

stephen_robles:
Oh,

wiliam_gallagher:
just cracked

stephen_robles:
that's,

wiliam_gallagher:
his watch. Yeah, okay.

stephen_robles:
I just hit it on another door frame. The screen is still pristine. The display has no scratches or marks of any kind on it. So, you know, kudos to the screen part, but yeah, the titanium definitely has some nicks.

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

stephen_robles:
All the door frames, they're my arch nemesis. So the features, oh yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
I think

stephen_robles:
Oh, yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
you

stephen_robles:
Oh, yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
should be

stephen_robles:
Oh,

wiliam_gallagher:
forced

stephen_robles:
yeah. Oh, yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
to move to Android. You do not take care of your Apple device. You put your phone under water, you smash into door frames, it's just wrong. It's just wrong. It's just

stephen_robles:
Excuse

wiliam_gallagher:
wrong. It's just wrong.

stephen_robles:
me,

wiliam_gallagher:
It's just

stephen_robles:
excuse

wiliam_gallagher:
wrong. It's just wrong.

stephen_robles:
me.

wiliam_gallagher:
It's just wrong. It's just wrong. It's just wrong. It's just wrong. It's just wrong. It's just wrong. It's just wrong. It's just wrong. It's

stephen_robles:
Now

wiliam_gallagher:
just wrong. It's just

stephen_robles:
listen,

wiliam_gallagher:
wrong.

stephen_robles:
no listen here, listen here. I have not broken an iPhone screen since the iPhone 10s I think. That is the only time I've dropped an iPhone and cracked and broken the screen. And I had to do Apple care like that week because it was right before the iPhone 11 was coming out. But

wiliam_gallagher:
there.

stephen_robles:
I don't, I take care of my stuff William. And I get Apple care on all this stuff, okay? So I take care of

wiliam_gallagher:
Hmm.

stephen_robles:
it. I don't like this

wiliam_gallagher:
Hmm.

stephen_robles:
accusation William. I take plenty

wiliam_gallagher:
Hmm.

stephen_robles:
care of it. But you're still a no-case guy, right? You're walking around there with a naked iPhone.

wiliam_gallagher:
Yes, that's true. Yes, that

stephen_robles:
Yeah, yeah, I don't do it.

wiliam_gallagher:
is me. Yes.

stephen_robles:
It feels like a wet fish, I can do it.

wiliam_gallagher:
And I have no scratches,

stephen_robles:
I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know.

wiliam_gallagher:
no mark. I have the aluminium uh, Apple Watch and I don't have this, I don't have a pixel of a dust scratch on it compared to you and I don't know what's going on here. We need to

stephen_robles:
William, you're better than me.

wiliam_gallagher:
get, I think this is a cry for help.

stephen_robles:
You're just better than me, William. I'll just admit it, you are better.

wiliam_gallagher:
That's,

stephen_robles:
You're yours.

wiliam_gallagher:
let the quickest

stephen_robles:
You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours. You're yours.

wiliam_gallagher:
way to end this conversation. Okay, all right.

stephen_robles:
You're just better. That's fine. I admit it. Now

wiliam_gallagher:
Mm-hmm

stephen_robles:
listen, here's the feature rundown of the iPhone 15 Pro, all the rumored features. A17 chip, new chip, pretty obvious. Titanium frame. This has been rumored the last couple of years, but it looks like the iPhone 15 Pro will get a titanium frame instead of stainless steel. Ultra thin curved bezels. So smaller bezels, even smaller than the 14 Pro and curved around the edge. Which that seems pretty sure. I mean the M2 iPad Pro has 6e, the new M2 MacBook Pros and stuff have 6e. Increased RAM, those solid state buttons which we'll have to see like volume may not depress, it might just be haptic. The mute button might not be a switch anymore, that might turn into a button. And improved a LiDAR scanner which, you know, who knows what that thing does anyway. No, I know what that does. It does all the

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh

stephen_robles:
AR stuff and portrait photography, cinematic mode. I know what they, I know what the LiDAR does. I was just kidding.

wiliam_gallagher:
But

stephen_robles:
I

wiliam_gallagher:
you don't use it.

stephen_robles:
was just... It gets used without you knowing. Like if you're gonna do probably cinematic

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh.

stephen_robles:
video, or if you're doing some kind of like AR, how does the sofa look in my room? You know, that all uses the lidar. I know what that's about. Oh, and one of the coupes. No good. No

wiliam_gallagher:
I

stephen_robles:
good.

wiliam_gallagher:
went

stephen_robles:
No good.

wiliam_gallagher:
to visit

stephen_robles:
No good. No good. No good. No good.

wiliam_gallagher:
Hill

stephen_robles:
No good. No good.

wiliam_gallagher:
House,

stephen_robles:
No good. No good.

wiliam_gallagher:
sorry,

stephen_robles:
No good. No good. No good.

wiliam_gallagher:
I went

stephen_robles:
No good. No good.

wiliam_gallagher:
on

stephen_robles:
No good.

wiliam_gallagher:
holiday, or this is two years ago now, I can't believe it's that long, to a place called Hill House in Scotland which is gorgeous. I think it was at Charles Rony Macintosh Design House, I've suddenly blanked on that, but the whole house is actually enveloped in a screen to protect it because there's some problems with it and it means you can literally walk up and over the house. So you can see every detail of this gorgeous design. And on the inside of the house, I took Lidar shots of very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very significant rooms. It took ages and I've never looked at them since but it was deeply impressive being able to walk away with a lidar scan and in fact I should look at them again now. Thank you for reminding me.

stephen_robles:
Oh, there you go. Very cool. I will also say a cool use of LIDAR if you didn't know. The Measure app on your iPhone, if you have an iPhone with LIDAR, I do this to measure the height of my kids as they are all growing very fast now it seems. If you point the Measure app at a person, give the phone a second, it will detect that a person is standing there. It will literally measure the person's height and give you a little line to measure their height. So it goes to the top of their head, all just using the LIDAR scanner It's pretty accurate and it's pretty wild. So you can measure people's

wiliam_gallagher:
So

stephen_robles:
heights with the light.

wiliam_gallagher:
you can't be bothered to get up out of your seat, cross over to your kid, and draw a little pencil line on the door frame, but you're willing to smash into that door frame with your Apple Watch. Yeah, priorities, I don't know what is going on. I don't know what is going on. I don't know what is

stephen_robles:
Thank

wiliam_gallagher:
going on. I don't

stephen_robles:
you.

wiliam_gallagher:
know what

stephen_robles:
Bye.

wiliam_gallagher:
is going on. I don't know what is going on. I don't know what is going on. I don't know what is going

stephen_robles:
I

wiliam_gallagher:
on.

stephen_robles:
don't listen. I know that's the old school way you do little notches on a door frame. But now

wiliam_gallagher:
Mm-hmm.

stephen_robles:
I have screenshots of the measure app on my iPhone. That's the new line on a door frame. Okay. That's how you do it in 2023.

wiliam_gallagher:
Okay.

stephen_robles:
That's how you do it. Speaking of Apple music and Apple music classical, there was a bug recently. There was a bunch of Reddit posts that were talking about this. Supposedly users would see other users playlists show up in their library. So kind of like a weird, I'm sure as Apple is working on Apple music classical and trying to do things on the back end might be some weird playlist

wiliam_gallagher:
Well.

stephen_robles:
stuff going on and even more troubling Lee I don't think there's a word but more troubling that it might have deleted some of the cloud stored individual tracks backed up to like iCloud music library or iTunes match so I've not experienced this I've not seen other people's playlist

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you. Thank you.

stephen_robles:
and I'm going to check right now make sure some of my individual uploaded tracks are still available but did you see my playlist at all was the did you see what I had

wiliam_gallagher:
Well, I am shocked at your tasty music, but you know, we all like the bangles, don't we? There's nothing wrong with that. Why did I pick the bangles of all these

stephen_robles:
I

wiliam_gallagher:
people?

stephen_robles:
have no

wiliam_gallagher:
No,

stephen_robles:
idea of all the things.

wiliam_gallagher:
I do like the bangles, anyway. Yes, so I do remember a long, long time ago, there was a change in a playlist. There was some track I liked and it was swapped in my playlist for a live version of the same track. And that seemed like a

stephen_robles:
Oh.

wiliam_gallagher:
database bug at the time. I haven't seen any of this. So the examples I saw all seem to be from people who had very strange Playlists and I don't mean the content. I mean the names of the playlist were weird And it looked like they could have been hacked and after a while you realize no Just some people really can't spell when they're typing their playlist into a night phone

stephen_robles:
Gotcha. Well, I don't know. Again, I don't know how widespread this issue is. But if you saw

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank

stephen_robles:
this

wiliam_gallagher:
you. Bye.

stephen_robles:
listeners reach out, let me know. But I just checked some of my individually uploaded tracks and I'm good to go. So

wiliam_gallagher:
Good.

stephen_robles:
yeah, yeah, very nice. All right. Let's talk about some lawmaking. So the US government is trying to change the way. Well, so the US government is trying to keep section 702, which is called the foreign intelligence surveillance act or FISA. Congress is trying to renew the law before the year's end. Big tech companies like Apple, Alphabet and Metta are pushing back trying to amend this law. Basically, this law could allow government agencies to demand data like phone records, text and emails from companies for national security investigations. Now Apple has had several of these over the years where like the FBI has requested stuff and Tim Cook is like, nah, I don't have that. Like we're not doing that. We're not trying, data or like we can't actually get into this phone like we don't have the passcode obviously and and all that kind of stuff. So you know this is something that is ongoing over the years. I've always appreciated Apple's stance on this and now with the advanced data protection in iCloud, if you have that enabled and all of your data is end to end encrypted and not even Apple has the key, I'm not even sure if this law would affect Apple users with that turned on like Apple really way of getting that data for the government, whether that's an iMessage conversation or even photos in the photo library, all of that is protected by the advanced data protection. So, you know, I understand why everybody else like Meta and Alphabet are trying to fight back against this. They don't want the government to be able to, you know, request data and not need a warrant and all that kind of stuff. But I think, you know, of all the companies, Apple's setup in their iCloud system is pretty set. So, I don't know,

wiliam_gallagher:
There

stephen_robles:
any

wiliam_gallagher:
is

stephen_robles:
thoughts on this?

wiliam_gallagher:
precedent though, isn't there? If Apple goes, what the hell, doesn't affect us, yeah, fine, then later the government could say, well, you agree to this, why haven't you agreed to that?

stephen_robles:
Oh,

wiliam_gallagher:
And

stephen_robles:
that

wiliam_gallagher:
things

stephen_robles:
is true.

wiliam_gallagher:
like this, that could be. So a political thing. Where I think that I got me was apparently that the feds admitted there had been, what was the phrase, compliance incidents over the use of the data. So people within the government have been misusing this information and that's shocking. Isn't it, you don't expect that in this day Thanks for watching. Bye.

stephen_robles:
Yeah, right. Yeah. So I don't know. We'll see what happens there. But more interestingly, I think, is this impending TikTok ban, where

wiliam_gallagher:
Mm.

stephen_robles:
the US, because of this, you know, this is a Chinese based app, and the platforms ties to China and all that, the US House Energy and Commerce Committee is talking about those connections and is trying to ban TikTok from the US. Not obviously not under the radar, but like their leadership like the CEO You don't really hear

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

stephen_robles:
much or see much of him and I was very surprised because I do open tiktok And when I opened it the other day the CEO of tiktok Xiao Chu I believe I'm not

wiliam_gallagher:
Mm-hmm.

stephen_robles:
forgive me if I'm mispronouncing

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah

stephen_robles:
that but He was on there like the video of him was front and center on tiktok talking to tiktok users directly Saying listen, I'm literally in the US right now about to testify before Congress and talk about, you know, there's over 120 million Americans on TikTok, which is like over a third of Americans are on TikTok, both using it, creating it. And he said, you know, leave comments on this video and help me, you know, convince the US government basically like not to ban TikTok from the US. And then we're actually pretty amazing comments from many US based TikTok creators. And just like one example, if you're on TikTok, you're probably familiar with him, but Keith Lee. incredible guy. He has gone from like several hundred thousand followers to over 10 million just in the last

wiliam_gallagher:
Bye.

stephen_robles:
year. And he just does very simple food reviews. Like he's just sitting in a chair like it's not high quality video. It's just him talking to him rating this food. But he's so authentic, so genuine. And now he's partnered with like Chipotle and he's had like

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.

stephen_robles:
a bunch

wiliam_gallagher:
Bye.

stephen_robles:
of massive, you know, all of his videos gets like millions of views. And there's a lot of creators on TikTok saying like, listen, this platform, namely TikTok, scheme is not great, especially when compared to platforms like YouTube, it has given creators a platform, especially with the virality and that nature for TikTok, where like those these creators have not succeeded elsewhere. And this is the platform that has allowed them to literally change their careers and sometimes

wiliam_gallagher:
Mm.

stephen_robles:
change their lives by posting on this app. And so like the privacy and security, again, like I'm not super well versed in what this app might be doing with your information. I'm sure it's taking a lot of it. Any information you give it, it is going to take it for advertising and the algorithm and all that. But I do find that obviously a third of America is using it. People find value in it, whether it's just for humor or learning. And there were other users, just casual users of TikTok that posted videos and commented with the CEO video and they were like, I have learned more from this app than anywhere else in my life. Like just simple life lessons, how to invest like money, like finance, Learning stuff on TikTok because there really are a lot of great creators on there and that is their main platform So I think it's wild that the CEO of TikTok is literally in the US You know before Congress trying to make sure it doesn't get banned. I'm very curious to see what it does Apparently it's over 150 million Americans. Anyway, so I have our convinced you to a browse TikTok now after that little

wiliam_gallagher:
You

stephen_robles:
spiel

wiliam_gallagher:
might actually, the learning bit did there. I don't know, presumably I'm not gonna learn to dance like a school child does,

stephen_robles:
You

wiliam_gallagher:
but

stephen_robles:
could,

wiliam_gallagher:
there are other

stephen_robles:
you

wiliam_gallagher:
things.

stephen_robles:
could.

wiliam_gallagher:
Okay. These, as well as the video, which I didn't know about, the CEO posted a 5,000 word testimony. It was actually basically the speech he's gonna give to Congress, and I read that yesterday. And of course he's convincing because his job is to be convincing, but he makes really good points 50 of the data. He doesn't at any point say the thing that was occurring to me, which is, well, Facebook does it, Google does it. We never seem to have complained enough about those. So, yeah, I think a ban is coming. I think it's inevitable, but I wonder if it's right. So...

stephen_robles:
One of the big concerns because it's Chinese based or there's ties to China is if data is stored in China with the

wiliam_gallagher:
Yes.

stephen_robles:
nature of the Chinese government and their Overbearing practices when it comes to data like what how is that going to affect? US users and their data when it comes to the Chinese government and It said that tiktok is transitioning to Oracle, which means

wiliam_gallagher:
Mm-hmm.

stephen_robles:
it's you know currently deleting historical protected US data oracle servers stored on non oracle servers and the CEO said there will be no way for the Chinese government to access us user data or compel access to it. So I think again, that is one of the main concerns that maybe he can address in front of the government. But I also, I also feel like William, I don't know if you've ever seen us government makers and lawmakers like in these

wiliam_gallagher:
heard.

stephen_robles:
kinds of hearings. But when it comes

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
to technology. And when it comes to social media,

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
I don't want to be unkind and I'm not trying to be political. But I do feel like many of the lawmakers that are asking questions of these tech company CEOs are not well versed in the space and don't have the technical and just common user knowledge of these platforms to be able to ask a good questions or to even maybe understand what they're trying like Tim Cook will testify before Congress trying to explain certain things. And

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
like the Congress people just don't get it. Have you

wiliam_gallagher:
Well,

stephen_robles:
seen that?

wiliam_gallagher:
when I watch these things, I'm conscious very often that, yes, there's a sort of asking a question, but they're not really asking a question. They're playing

stephen_robles:
Right.

wiliam_gallagher:
for the crowd back home. They're going

stephen_robles:
correct.

wiliam_gallagher:
for the smallest bass they can, they're going not to find answers, but to make it sound like they're standing up for the little people kind of thing, when the little people know an awful lot more than them, which is shocking.

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
These are people in power who are doing such important things. and it is sometimes really quite jaw-dropping what they don't know about something. And you wonder, we have this thing in the UK. I saw this David Cameron, about 17 million prime ministers ago just before he wrecked the country with Brexit, was giving advice to film companies, telling them things like, you should only make hits, for example, and things like that. And he listened to the detail and he suddenly thought, if he's this ignorant about all these other things that I don't know about, and then we were so that that

stephen_robles:
you

wiliam_gallagher:
ended badly please get me out of this part of the conversation

stephen_robles:
Well, and

wiliam_gallagher:
rescue me

stephen_robles:
I just want to mention, I saw this one clip. I don't watch a lot of this, but I saw Sundar Prachai. He was testifying before Congress. And there was some congressman asking about the location

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
and that location service and that data. And the question was basically so general as to say, does this phone know where I am? Like that's

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
the question. And like on the face of it, like, OK, forget about Google and Android. Just think about that from an iPhone perspective. that question. Like the answer is it depends. You know,

wiliam_gallagher:
Yes.

stephen_robles:
it like, it depends on a thousand factors. But as you try to explain it, and as this as soon as Prachai was trying to explain it, like the congressman was not really interested in learning about

wiliam_gallagher:
No.

stephen_robles:
like how this actually worked. But if you were trying to answer that question from an iPhone perspective, it's like, okay, well, do you have every toggle in the location privacy services of your settings off? Is every toggle off? And if you denied every app access to your location, because if that's the case, no, It doesn't know where you are. Like you can make it. So even when you open Apple Maps, it doesn't know your location because you've restricted location to everything from your phone. So, you know, you can

wiliam_gallagher:
although

stephen_robles:
set it up where.

wiliam_gallagher:
because it's a cell phone it's connecting to local cell towers and the cell tower can be identified but that's

stephen_robles:
Well,

wiliam_gallagher:
not a phone's fault so no no and with you

stephen_robles:
but

wiliam_gallagher:
I'm

stephen_robles:
even

wiliam_gallagher:
just

stephen_robles:
that,

wiliam_gallagher:
uh suddenly realized

stephen_robles:
yeah,

wiliam_gallagher:
that

stephen_robles:
yeah,

wiliam_gallagher:
bit

stephen_robles:
no, that's,

wiliam_gallagher:
yeah

stephen_robles:
that's an excellent point because even that, like caveat, it's like, that has nothing to do with Apple. That's just the carrier. And yeah, like even back on the original iPhone, there was that assisted AGPS where cellular towers could like semi triangulate where you are in a certain area. So okay, yeah, if you're, you know, turn off cellular data, like disconnect from your carrier, all toggles are off.

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
with the stock platform that it ships with and it doesn't know your location. But if you enable anything like frequent locations in the iOS privacy settings, yeah, your iPhone periodically pings your location so it knows like, okay, you're often at this place or you often travel to this location like work at this time of day. So we're going to suggest something at that time of day regularly like get directions to work. And it's all

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
trade offs. But also like what is that data Like the data is private and all that location data is tied to your icline account But that's in tan encrypted and you have advanced data protection Like there's so many caveats and bullet points like underneath any answer any of those kinds of congressional hearings I feel like don't really go anywhere or really don't answer anything

wiliam_gallagher:
which was the senator who accused Google of, I can't remember if it was left or right by us, but one of them total by us because his office sends out a newsletter and the copy that went to his father went into his father's junk mail. Therefore, proof Google was anti whichever party this guy was with

stephen_robles:
Hmm

wiliam_gallagher:
and scarily we should introduce laws to change it. Okay.

stephen_robles:
Listen, I hope I know it. Yeah,

wiliam_gallagher:
Maybe

stephen_robles:
good.

wiliam_gallagher:
senators should watch and learn things on TikTok. That's

stephen_robles:
Oh,

wiliam_gallagher:
what we're coming

stephen_robles:
maybe

wiliam_gallagher:
to realise, isn't

stephen_robles:
that

wiliam_gallagher:
it?

stephen_robles:
might be it. Now listen, I know that hopefully this was not politically biased in any way. Like I just wanted to talk about this whole situation as far as US government lawmakers and their understandings of technology. But if you were offended by this political discussion, then please vote William Gallagher for president in 2024

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.

stephen_robles:
for the United States of America.

wiliam_gallagher:
Right,

stephen_robles:
Anyway.

wiliam_gallagher:
who would be my running mate?

stephen_robles:
Listen, I don't want to put words in your mouth.

wiliam_gallagher:
AOC, but okay, yeah. Alright.

stephen_robles:
Okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
Alright.

stephen_robles:
All right. Yes. I was hoping for me, but that's okay. All right. I want to talk about, um, AI stuff very briefly. I feel like there's a bit of AI fatigue. I feel like you can't look at the internet without seeing AI and artificial

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
intelligence just plastered everywhere. But it's, it's a thing like it's blowing up. And so Google launched a Bard, which is their AI chat service. So you can chat with Google Bard. And it is. useful than chat GPT apparently. I've just seen a few tests. I know Wes Hilliard had some you know tweeted some responses like it didn't get just basic measurements right. But anyway, Google bar does the thing you can try that Microsoft is doing artificial intelligence image generation in Bing. And so Microsoft you know they're all in on the open AI stuff and they're adding it to Microsoft Office yada yada. And then Adobe launched Firefly or at least announced Firefly. And they will also have an AI image generation service called And they are protecting artists and creators in some way as to not like plagiarize their work or not, you know, can straight up steal artist artwork and other things. So, you know, all these tools are out there. I feel like the next couple of years, it's going to be a bit of a messy process trying to figure all this out and seeing like, what are the most useful cases for it and images? Is that pulling, you know, it's obviously pulling an aggregate like images you just find on the internet so I don't know how that works. And maybe we can get some kind of AI expert on the show and I can interview them and maybe find out more about this but it's everywhere William. Do you have AI fatigue?

wiliam_gallagher:
Well, I've only tried it a bit. So yes, did you hear about Alan Alder

stephen_robles:
Thank you. Thank you.

wiliam_gallagher:
and chat GPT? Do you know this story?

stephen_robles:
No. No, what happened?

wiliam_gallagher:
Alan Alder, writer, producer, actor,

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
he got chat GPT to write a scene from for MASH and got his old Mike Farrell, BJ Hanneco, co-star from MASH back. They performed a scene, a first scene of MASH written in 40 years and it was atrocious. And it was

stephen_robles:
you

wiliam_gallagher:
bad as chat GBT tried to be funny and it's like we all know somebody who isn't funny and thinks they are that was it here it was you know messy and depressing but

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
also

stephen_robles:
It is very widely variant how good AI is at certain things. Some things it's amazing at and their response are the last couple of weeks, but notion AI, I've used that and just played around with like, give me a podcast title, give me a podcast description. And I've used it a couple

wiliam_gallagher:
Mm.

stephen_robles:
of times, I will edit it. I don't just straight up copy and paste it. I'll edit it before actually using it. It's pretty useful for that. But then I tried.

wiliam_gallagher:
That's good to know.

stephen_robles:
Yeah, yeah, it is good. media bio because I wasn't I'm never happy with my social media bio. I don't know, but maybe we could talk about that next. But I was trying to see like how AI would write me a bio, just like a short one sentence. Here's what I do. Write me something funny. It was bad. Like every AI service I tried, they were not good. They sounded really weird and just it could not do it. So we still have a ways to go when

wiliam_gallagher:
cat

stephen_robles:
it comes to AI.

wiliam_gallagher:
can we really blame them though I mean look to the

stephen_robles:
Oh,

wiliam_gallagher:
source

stephen_robles:
oh, you're

wiliam_gallagher:
I

stephen_robles:
dissing

wiliam_gallagher:
don't

stephen_robles:
me

wiliam_gallagher:
I'm

stephen_robles:
now.

wiliam_gallagher:
not judging

stephen_robles:
You're just saying there's, you're

wiliam_gallagher:
but

stephen_robles:
saying there's

wiliam_gallagher:
this

stephen_robles:
not

wiliam_gallagher:
is

stephen_robles:
good

wiliam_gallagher:
revenge

stephen_robles:
source material.

wiliam_gallagher:
basically

stephen_robles:
Oh,

wiliam_gallagher:
yes

stephen_robles:
I see.

wiliam_gallagher:
purely

stephen_robles:
You're saying I'm

wiliam_gallagher:
in

stephen_robles:
not

wiliam_gallagher:
vengeance

stephen_robles:
interested.

wiliam_gallagher:
for your your cracks about my twerking videos and things this is it

stephen_robles:
No,

wiliam_gallagher:
right

stephen_robles:
no,

wiliam_gallagher:
back in your face yeah

stephen_robles:
this is because I don't have a Wikipedia page and you do. That's the difference. You have a Wikipedia

wiliam_gallagher:
Okay.

stephen_robles:
page that all these AIs can pull from and I do not. And at first, at first I just wanted to know like, does AI know who I am? And so I asked it, write me a bio for the video and podcast creator Steven Robles. And it started out and it said, Steven Robles is a video podcast creator, yeah, yeah, based in California, Steven and it was not me. Whatever Steven Robles.

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh.

stephen_robles:
he was not me. So I was like, well, I can't,

wiliam_gallagher:
But...

stephen_robles:
it, it, I, I doesn't know who I am.

wiliam_gallagher:
that you

stephen_robles:
It doesn't.

wiliam_gallagher:
asked for affirmation and you didn't get it? That's

stephen_robles:
I just wanted a bio, I just wanted a social media bio

wiliam_gallagher:
terrible.

stephen_robles:
and it would not write one for me.

wiliam_gallagher:
No, no, no,

stephen_robles:
It was not good at it.

wiliam_gallagher:
you just said you just

stephen_robles:
It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it. It was not good at it.

wiliam_gallagher:
admit it. I want to see if it knew who I was. That's it.

stephen_robles:
Yeah,

wiliam_gallagher:
And it didn't.

stephen_robles:
well,

wiliam_gallagher:
OK. OK.

stephen_robles:
this is because I'm telling you, it's because of Wikipedia page. Now I'm going to read your

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

stephen_robles:
Twitter bio here. See, you have like the biggest flex right here, right? At the top of your social media bio, you say, Deputy Chav, the Ratchez Guild of Great Britain. Even so, a lot of you expressed your mind, most of them continue to be quite a daft anyway.

wiliam_gallagher:
Right.

stephen_robles:
How was my accent

wiliam_gallagher:
Pretty,

stephen_robles:
there? How

wiliam_gallagher:
100%

stephen_robles:
was that?

wiliam_gallagher:
sure it wasn't typed in that accent, but

stephen_robles:
Hehehehehe

wiliam_gallagher:
you

stephen_robles:
Uh,

wiliam_gallagher:
know. And I slaved

stephen_robles:
yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
over that last joke and you just muttered it out of the way, but no, no. Bye.

stephen_robles:
I was trying to mutter it as someone might do in Great Britain, you know? Don't you kind of like mutter the last lines? That's British

wiliam_gallagher:
No.

stephen_robles:
humor, isn't it? No? Oh,

wiliam_gallagher:
No. No.

stephen_robles:
okay,

wiliam_gallagher:
It isn't.

stephen_robles:
sorry.

wiliam_gallagher:
I'm not helping you here. No.

stephen_robles:
Okay, okay. But I mean,

wiliam_gallagher:
First

stephen_robles:
deputy

wiliam_gallagher:
rule of

stephen_robles:
chair

wiliam_gallagher:
improv.

stephen_robles:
of the Writers

wiliam_gallagher:
Say

stephen_robles:
Guild

wiliam_gallagher:
yes,

stephen_robles:
of Great Britain.

wiliam_gallagher:
but no. Well, yeah.

stephen_robles:
Yeah,

wiliam_gallagher:
Because

stephen_robles:
I mean, yeah,

wiliam_gallagher:
that's...

stephen_robles:
that's a great intro to your body. Like, yeah, I just want to work a pv page, that's all. Anyway, maybe there's

wiliam_gallagher:
Unfortunately

stephen_robles:
too much to

wiliam_gallagher:
it

stephen_robles:
ask.

wiliam_gallagher:
can't last. There are fixed term limits for that. There comes a point where I have to stand again in a couple of months' time and hopefully I'll get through, but then there's only about one more. Two more goes after that and I have to leave being deputy chair and I'm already not looking forward

stephen_robles:
Oh,

wiliam_gallagher:
to it.

stephen_robles:
oh, well, I'm sorry William, but you're deputy chair

wiliam_gallagher:
These

stephen_robles:
for a

wiliam_gallagher:
are

stephen_robles:
while.

wiliam_gallagher:
really

stephen_robles:
You could

wiliam_gallagher:
interesting times for writers, but actually in part because of AI and stuff. I mean, also so many other pressures here in the UK on writers. It's just a fascinating time to be involved with an organisation that's working so hard to protect us all.

stephen_robles:
Yeah. I also say searching Wikipedia for William Gallagher. William Gallagher, the politician born in 1875. Is that you?

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh,

stephen_robles:
Are you a time

wiliam_gallagher:
is that

stephen_robles:
traveler?

wiliam_gallagher:
Willy Gallagher from the Gawbles? Because I genuinely

stephen_robles:
Thank

wiliam_gallagher:
have been

stephen_robles:
you.

wiliam_gallagher:
mixed

stephen_robles:
Bye.

wiliam_gallagher:
up with him before. So,

stephen_robles:
I don't

wiliam_gallagher:
no. Okay.

stephen_robles:
know what the Gourbals are, but sure.

wiliam_gallagher:
It's a, it's an area. Okay.

stephen_robles:
Oh no, he's from Minnesota. This is William Gallagher's from Minnesota.

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh,

stephen_robles:
Sorry,

wiliam_gallagher:
right,

stephen_robles:
sorry.

wiliam_gallagher:
right.

stephen_robles:
And then

wiliam_gallagher:
No,

stephen_robles:
William

wiliam_gallagher:
we

stephen_robles:
J.

wiliam_gallagher:
don't

stephen_robles:
Gallagher,

wiliam_gallagher:
talk.

stephen_robles:
who is a colonel, president

wiliam_gallagher:
No.

stephen_robles:
of Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia. That's the other way. And then William J. Gallagher, who is a colonel, president of Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia. That's the other

wiliam_gallagher:
Do you have

stephen_robles:
way.

wiliam_gallagher:
to have a middle initial to be in the US military?

stephen_robles:
That's a good question.

wiliam_gallagher:
I think

stephen_robles:
I don't

wiliam_gallagher:
I'm

stephen_robles:
know,

wiliam_gallagher:
starting to

stephen_robles:
maybe.

wiliam_gallagher:
think you do. William J. Gulliver. It sounds

stephen_robles:
Yeah,

wiliam_gallagher:
so

stephen_robles:
yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
much

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
on metal sheet than William Gulliver.

stephen_robles:
Do you have a middle initial?

wiliam_gallagher:
Not exactly, it's complicated.

stephen_robles:
Oh, that's

wiliam_gallagher:
No, it's not

stephen_robles:
mysterious.

wiliam_gallagher:
William Complicated Gallagher. I have

stephen_robles:
W.C.

wiliam_gallagher:
a...

stephen_robles:
Gallagher.

wiliam_gallagher:
Okay, I'm not gonna finish this story now, I've just realised...

stephen_robles:
No, no, please, please, I mean, if you're gonna reveal the initial, I would love to hear it, but you know, you don't have to, no pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure.

wiliam_gallagher:
I am a recovering Catholic and as part of Catholic Roman Catholicism in the UK, I presume everywhere else, you get a thing called a confirmation name and I have one for that. I never use it, it's not a legitimate part of my name on legal documents or whatever, but it does give rise to issues. WG with this minus, with this letter in the middle does form a word and I'm not going to tell you what it is. Okay. You've

stephen_robles:
Okay,

wiliam_gallagher:
only got 26

stephen_robles:
okay.

wiliam_gallagher:
options to be fair.

stephen_robles:
I already I already sensor beeped like four things in this episode. So yeah, okay. All

wiliam_gallagher:
You're

stephen_robles:
right.

wiliam_gallagher:
right,

stephen_robles:
No

wiliam_gallagher:
there's

stephen_robles:
won't

wiliam_gallagher:
a limit

stephen_robles:
won't do it.

wiliam_gallagher:
isn't

stephen_robles:
Won't

wiliam_gallagher:
there?

stephen_robles:
do it.

wiliam_gallagher:
Okay.

stephen_robles:
Yeah, I want to do it. I do want to have a moment of silence maybe for the DP review website. I don't know if you saw this but DP

wiliam_gallagher:
Hmm.

stephen_robles:
review has been a camera and video gear website for many years. I think it started in over 25 years it says it was acquired by Amazon time ago for whatever reason. I don't even know why. But this was a resource that many people on the internet have used going here for gear and reviews and such. And it is closing. Amazon is shutting it down amidst a bunch of layoffs. Amazon is laying off like thousands of people. But dprview.com is closing April 10th. And it seems like Amazon is not even going to keep the content around. It's not

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh.

stephen_robles:
only letting the staff go and the website won't be updated. Like it's offline and you want to be able to access all the content that has been created over the last 25 years. The

wiliam_gallagher:
Goodness.

stephen_robles:
team at DP Review has said they're going to continue like on YouTube and such, obviously under a different name. But this is kind of unfortunate. And for Amazon, like they have their own cloud storage service like AWS is a thing. I don't know how expensive it would be to keep DP review.com at least live. So like people could still visit it and access the information that's there because I imagine for at least the next couple of years it would be applicable. Like they've reviewed modern cameras and lenses all the way up to right now, but they're just like totally taking you down April 10th. And so it's kind of sad, it's going away.

wiliam_gallagher:
This is a job for the Inset Archive, the Wayback Machine. They should rush

stephen_robles:
Yes,

wiliam_gallagher:
into

stephen_robles:
yes,

wiliam_gallagher:
that, I hope. Oh,

stephen_robles:
yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
yeah, okay.

stephen_robles:
Yeah, and

wiliam_gallagher:
I didn't

stephen_robles:
it...

wiliam_gallagher:
appreciate

stephen_robles:
And it...

wiliam_gallagher:
that the whole body was going. I knew about the closure, which is bad enough. But that's very wasteful, isn't it? All that work, all that useful stuff. And that's it. I hope you enjoyed this video. I hope you enjoyed it. I'll see you in the next video.

stephen_robles:
It is. It is. It is unfortunate. So you could still active right now. You have until April 10th, you can see it. And again, they have like great reviews like that Sony a seven R five camera. There's a review on there from DP review. So, you know, it's unfortunate. I don't know if it's a trend or what this will look like in the years to come. But these kind of long standing publications that are more blog based, like deep review. I would say there's a lot of videos. And that's kind of, you know, where you would need to go in today's world. Like it's doing both. Like it's writing stuff. It's doing videos. But I'm curious the like the long term trajectory of these kinds of, you know, very, not very, but these niche or unique use cases like websites. I don't know. I feel like if it was independent, it would probably still be going. I don't know why Amazon shut it down. But anyway. All right. The last thing I want to say is I get this. I got this weird urge the other night, William. There's nothing to do with the words I bleeped out before.

wiliam_gallagher:
Wait,

stephen_robles:
Tina, just

wiliam_gallagher:
are

stephen_robles:
totally,

wiliam_gallagher:
you pregnant? You can tell us

stephen_robles:
no,

wiliam_gallagher:
now.

stephen_robles:
no, no, no. I got the urge to move my entire email structure for my personal email to another service. And I did it. I did it actually last night as we record. I started the process at like 10 p.m. I finished at like midnight. And I was just like, I just wanna do it. And so I just did it. I don't know if you're like that, William, but sometimes I just kind of get like that itch to say, I want to move my entire task workflow or move to this other calendar application. So I'm going to set, you know, just do it right now in the middle of the night. And so that's what I did.

wiliam_gallagher:
Well,

stephen_robles:
You ever get that kind

wiliam_gallagher:
yeah,

stephen_robles:
of urge?

wiliam_gallagher:
actually this week I did. I mean, I have a 58 Keys

stephen_robles:
Oh.

wiliam_gallagher:
podcast, a video YouTube channel. And for

stephen_robles:
Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
months now, I've been looking at doing a Patreon version and about seven days ago, I just thought, no, this is it. You've researched this too much, just do it or don't. So I did it and

stephen_robles:
Nice.

wiliam_gallagher:
lots more still to do, but it's, you know, you feel like, yeah, suddenly you've got the burn to get it done and sorted.

stephen_robles:
Exactly.

wiliam_gallagher:
And sometimes that's just what you need to push something

stephen_robles:
That's

wiliam_gallagher:
over

stephen_robles:
it.

wiliam_gallagher:
the edge, get it working.

stephen_robles:
That's exactly right. And that's what I did. And what made it a daunting task is, and I know this is the case, I have way too many domain names and I have lots

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.

stephen_robles:
of email addresses that I've created at all those domain names over the years. They all go to the same place, but for whatever reason, like I just have a ton. And so I had to change the MX records for like, it was probably seven to 10 different domains

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you. Bye.

stephen_robles:
for all the aliases. I left a couple out because I'm like, I don't think anyone's sending me email here. I was gonna leave it away, leave it out.

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh.

stephen_robles:
But I did it all. I was on Google Workplace and I've been using Google Workplace just personally for the last several years. And Google Workplace is good, you get drive, you get all that access, but they don't like you can't change the default domain for your Google Workplace account without a long rigmarole process of like moving it to another Google Workplace and assigning whatever. So I was like, if I'm gonna have to go through a long process default email address that I'm using for this account. Then I'm just gonna move. Like I just wanna go somewhere else. I had used Fastmail years ago. I hear the ATP guys talk about it all the time. For my needs now, Fastmail does everything I want. It's cheaper than Google Workplace. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
Sorry,

stephen_robles:
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
ATP,

stephen_robles:
Yeah. Yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
alcohol, tobacco and no firearms.

stephen_robles:
No, no, no, no.

wiliam_gallagher:
No. No.

stephen_robles:
This, I'm gonna have to put like a TVM rating on this podcast episode.

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.

stephen_robles:
No, the Accidental Tech podcast. The guys,

wiliam_gallagher:
I'll write it

stephen_robles:
Marco

wiliam_gallagher:
right,

stephen_robles:
Arman,

wiliam_gallagher:
sorry.

stephen_robles:
Casey

wiliam_gallagher:
Okay,

stephen_robles:
Liz, yeah.

wiliam_gallagher:
yes.

stephen_robles:
They all use Fastmail except for Syracuse. I mean, I think he's still all on the Google train. But I was like, I think I'm gonna do it. A lot of people suggested, no, just go to iCloud email. They don't support enough domains for me to use iCloud email. And it's just, it's still a little wonky in a couple of areas. But Fastmail, all my email content, I was afraid like, can I import all the

wiliam_gallagher:
Mm.

stephen_robles:
email? Also the email filters, because I've set up lots of filters over the years, and I wasn't sure how that was going to work. And I have to say, they are not a sponsor, although maybe they should be, but switching to fastmail was such a seamless process. I imported

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you. Thank you.

stephen_robles:
all of my email, it finished this morning, it got everything, got all my folders, calendars, contacts, everything from my Google Workplace import your Gmail filters in this like file format and Fastmail can import those filters and rules that I've set up over the years. So Fastmail has all my rules now. I was able to get all my email rules, which I've mentioned this before, the best email filtering hack, create a filter and whatever email service you use and say if the body of an email has the word unsubscribe

wiliam_gallagher:
Hmm.

stephen_robles:
in the body text, filter that directly away into a folder, skip the back, skip the inbox and that will clear up like 90% of the emails that hit your inbox. I promise you

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

stephen_robles:
it is amazing. iCloud mail doesn't let you set up that kind of filter. I don't know why iCloud email doesn't let you set up a filter where the body includes this text. You can only do like subject and from and to email addresses. So that's really annoying, but it's a great,

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
great tip.

wiliam_gallagher:
Note to self,

stephen_robles:
Good.

wiliam_gallagher:
don't use the word unsubscribe in my evil mass mailing say,

stephen_robles:
Ha

wiliam_gallagher:
desubscribe

stephen_robles:
ha ha!

wiliam_gallagher:
or something like that and I'll get through

stephen_robles:
Well,

wiliam_gallagher:
more noted. Thanks. Okay.

stephen_robles:
listen, listen, there's a lot of like slimy emails. They'll instead of saying unsubscribe, they'll say manage email preferences or manage

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah,

stephen_robles:
preferences.

wiliam_gallagher:
hey, I work hard to create slimy emails that bother everybody.

stephen_robles:
I've created filters for all of those, William. Your email could say manage email filters. It could say, you know, fill out a survey

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

stephen_robles:
for preferences. All of those weird phrases that I've seen in all the junkmails, it all goes to a folder. But I do check that folder periodically. I'll scroll through it just to make sure I don't miss anything important. And again, I really don't. It's an amazing filter. Highly recommend. But switching it all over, I changed all the MX records for my domains and Fastmail is up and running and like I'm using it. It is a little more cumbersome to set up on your Apple devices. It is an IMAP email. So with Google, you can just sign into your Google account. It connects everything quickly. Fastmail, you do have to set it up as IMAP. It's a little more cumbersome. But once it's set up, you're good to go. And it's great. I moved it all to Fastmail last night in a couple of hours. And I highly recommend. So, Fastmail.

wiliam_gallagher:
Did you, were you able to sort of parallel run for a while, or were you a female while this was going on? I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure.

stephen_robles:
as much of a redundancy nerd as I am with things like recording a podcast. I am

wiliam_gallagher:
Yeah.

stephen_robles:
not when it comes to probably more important things like my email. So I totally just, I moved all my MX records over to fast mail. I, you know, ditched Gmail immediately as soon as all my email was ported over. And I'm all in on fast mail like 12 hours later. So there is no parallel running anything. And I'm getting email. I mean, it's coming to my fast mail, all the MX records, you know, it'll verify everything. For you and so yeah, that's what I did way

wiliam_gallagher:
But you didn't get

stephen_robles:
I did

wiliam_gallagher:
the

stephen_robles:
it

wiliam_gallagher:
one from me asking for money and saying, if you disun enjoy a rise, this email,

stephen_robles:
Thank you.

wiliam_gallagher:
you click here, that kind of thing. No, I wondered.

stephen_robles:
Let me check my newsletter folder where all my

wiliam_gallagher:
I

stephen_robles:
spam

wiliam_gallagher:
just

stephen_robles:
goes.

wiliam_gallagher:
tell me the cash anyway, it's fine. No, just save

stephen_robles:
Okay,

wiliam_gallagher:
yourself

stephen_robles:
yeah, just

wiliam_gallagher:
some

stephen_robles:
send it

wiliam_gallagher:
time

stephen_robles:
in an envelope.

wiliam_gallagher:
there. Yeah.

stephen_robles:
Yeah, but it was great. Moving from Google Workplace to Fastmail, it works really well. I paid for a year, which is 50 bucks, so you can get it even cheaper if you pay for a year.

wiliam_gallagher:
Oh.

stephen_robles:
It's great. So I don't use Google anymore for my personal email. There you go. That's

wiliam_gallagher:
but

stephen_robles:
it.

wiliam_gallagher:
you have been on it for fewer than 24 hours. So you should probably give it at least

stephen_robles:
Thank you.

wiliam_gallagher:

stephen_robles:
Bye.

wiliam_gallagher:
hours before you decide that it's

stephen_robles:
probably

wiliam_gallagher:
definitely

stephen_robles:
should,

wiliam_gallagher:
better. Yeah. Yeah.

stephen_robles:
yeah probably should, probably should, but anyway

wiliam_gallagher:
Okay,

stephen_robles:
so

wiliam_gallagher:
actually,

stephen_robles:
that is

wiliam_gallagher:
how about we will say this, you've got 48 hours, kid, and then we're having your badge and your gun and your email account. Yeah, that's what we'll do. All right.

stephen_robles:
That's it. But that was my experience. It was really great. So anyway, listen, there's any questions about that? That's not anything we talked about in this episode. You can tweet or master down William and myself. Those links are in the show notes as well as everything we talked about. And to hear the ad free and uncensored version

wiliam_gallagher:
Pfft.

stephen_robles:
of this podcast, you can support us at patreon.com slash Apple insider or directly in Apple podcasts. Thanks for tuning in. We'll catch you next time.

wiliam_gallagher:
Great.

stephen_robles:
That was fun.

wiliam_gallagher:
Thank you.
