Stop memorizing, start listening! Welcome to Learn By Listening, the English podcast designed specifically for young learners who want to understand English naturally. We believe that children learn best through stories, not word lists.
In each episode, we filled stories with mystery, humor, and fun characters. Whether it’s meeting a "tall ghost" who is actually just Grandpa, or traveling to a sunny day in Nara with a magic kimono, our stories use simple language that students can actually follow.
What makes us different?
Context over Lists: We use vocabulary from the standard curriculum (like family, feelings, and weather) but put them into exciting plots.
Perfect for ESL: Spoken clearly and at a pace that helps non-native speakers gain confidence.
Short & Sweet: Every episode is under 5 minutes—perfect for a morning listen or a bedtime story.
Join us and discover that you don't need to memorize words to speak English—you just need to listen!

Hello! I am Duncan.
Welcome to our English story time. I’m going to be playing Stephen today. Jessica is moving to Taichung and she’s going to share some feelings about moving. In this B1 dialogue, Jessica is going to be speaking a little fast, therefore, please listen carefully. You can also listen to the dialogue again if you didn’t catch everything. Are you ready? Let’s go!
Stephen: Hey Jessica! I saw the moving boxes at your house yesterday. Are you really leaving our small town next week?
Jessica: (Sighs) Yeah, it’s official, Stephen. My family is moving to Taichung. I’m supposed to be excited because it’s a big city with department stores and bubble tea everywhere, but honestly... I’m terrified.
Stephen: Terrified? Why? Taichung is cool! They have that huge science museum and the night markets. It's much more exciting than here.
Jessica: I know, I know. But the city isn't what scares me. It’s the school. Everyone says Junior High in Taichung is "Level 99" difficulty.
Stephen: Level 99? You mean like a video game?
Jessica: Exactly. In our small town, we all know each other. The teachers are kind, and I feel comfortable. But in Taichung, the schools are huge. I’ve heard the students there study until 10:00 PM every night. It’s so competitive.
Stephen: I heard that too. My cousin goes to school in Taichung, and he has like... ten different textbooks for one subject! But Jessica, you’re one of the smartest kids in our class. You always get the best grades in English.
Jessica: That’s the problem! Here, I’m "Smart Jessica." But in a big city school, maybe I’ll just be "Average Jessica." What if I can’t keep up? What if the math is too hard? I feel so anxious when I think about the first day.
Stephen: You know, it’s okay to feel anxious. It’s a huge transition. But think about the new things! You’ll meet new people, and you can join different clubs. Maybe a singing club or a dance team?
Jessica: I hope so. I’m also worried about making friends. Everyone in the city seems so... busy. Will they have time to talk to the girl from the small town?
Stephen: If they don't talk to you, they are crazy! You’re a great friend. And hey, we have the internet. You can call me every day and tell me how "difficult" the math is while I’m still here enjoying our quiet life.
Jessica: Thanks, Stephen. That makes me feel a bit better. I guess I’m just scared of the unknown. Taichung feels like a different world right now.
Stephen: Just remember, even in a big city, the sun rises the same way. You’ll find your place. Just don't forget us when you become a "Big City Girl.”
Jessica: Never! I’ll send you a box of famous Taichung Sun Cakes every month.
Stephen: Deal! Now, let’s go play one last game of UNO before you have to go pack your bags.
OUTRO:
That is the end of our story. Good job!
Now, can you answer the three questions? Listen again if you need to.
