Building with imaginAction

We’ve all done it: sat down with a fresh notepad, listed a dozen major goals, and promised ourselves this time would be different. Then life gets in the way, progress stalls, and that massive checklist ends up causing more overwhelm than execution. When everything is a priority, nothing actually is.
In this episode of Building with imaginAction, we break down why endless to-do lists fail and look at the practical, down-to-earth science behind cutting through the clutter. By looking at real-world tech development frameworks and Dr. Nelson Cowan's landmark working memory research, we explain why "The Rule of Three" is the ultimate sweet spot for your daily routine. You'll learn how to stop fighting decision fatigue, protect your focus, and pick the three defining plays that make every single day an absolute win.
We also share a quick update on the new, zero-guilt Action Plan tracking grid live inside Levonis.ai—the AI product development team built to support your business builds.

Welcome back to Building with imaginAction.
If you are anything like me, you have done this before. You’ve read a book about goal setting, seen a course or a post and thought, “It’s time to get my shit together.” You get out a new notepad and write out your goals—lots of them.
Fast forward a few weeks, and bugger all has progressed. Life and all those things got in the way. Sure, those goals are all valid, and you will get back to them, but in the meantime, you have this to finish and that other thing to go to. Blah, blah, and more blah.
One little problem, one thing that might be holding progress back is focus. While those 14 goals are what you want in your life or business, the long list brings with it a little overwhelm and paralysis, so you go off to do other things. It’s easier on the brain that way.
When you sit down at your desk in the morning and look at the screens, you can't fight a massive checklist. When everything is labelled a priority, nothing actually is. If you want to actually move a project forward without draining your brain before lunch, you have to get comfortable with cutting down the list. The magic number is exactly three.
This isn't a new idea, and it's not some abstract theory. If you look at tech development and modern software build teams, they run on something they simply call the "Rule of Three." The logic is basic common sense: three is the smallest number required to form a pattern without making things too complicated. It forces you to pick exactly three outcomes that will make today an absolute win. If you knock over those three distinct things, you win the day. You stop reacting to every shiny distraction and focus on the small handful of levers that actually shift the needle.
This approach is backed by solid cognitive psychology. For years, the old myth was that the human brain could juggle seven things at once. Modern neuroscience has completely debunked that. There’s a classic study by a psychologist named Dr. Nelson Cowan called "The Magical Number 4 in Short-Term Memory." He proved that our short-term working memory ceiling actually maxes out at just four chunks of information at a time.
Think about what that means for your daily routine. If you are trying to hold five, six, or seven tasks in your head at once, your brain is running at max capacity just trying not to drop the ball. You are exhausted before you even write a single line of code or review a client document. By capping your daily tracking at exactly three actions, you deliberately leave a buffer slot open. It keeps your head clear, prevents mental overload, and stops decision fatigue from killing your afternoon.
We actually built this exact psychology directly into the new Action Plan feature inside Levonis. Log into your boardroom dashboard, and you'll see a new link in the left sidebar called Action Plan. It lets you type in up to three actions to track daily on a simple calendar grid. Define your plan, then tick them off each day. Simple.
But you don't need our software to use this rule. Whether you use the platform or just a cheap notebook on your desk, the discipline is identical: pick three things, protect your mental focus, and execute them cleanly. Tomorrow morning, reset. Scrap the long checklist. Pick your three plays, get them done, and watch your momentum compound.
