Welcome to another episode of our podcast. Today, let's delve into a practical teaching from the Rambam - Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, a towering figure in Jewish scholarship.
The Rambam teaches us in his Mishneh Torah, the Laws of Charity, a profound lesson: he outlines eight levels of giving tzedakah, charity. At the top level, he describes a form of charity where the giver and receiver do not know each other, preserving the dignity of the recipient. However, an even higher form of charity, according to the Rambam, is to provide a person with a gift or loan, or to create a partnership with them, or to find them employment – in other words, to give in such a way that the recipient no longer needs to rely on others.
This teaching from Rambam is not merely about the act of giving, but about the attitude we should foster when we give. It's about creating an environment of respect, dignity, and ultimately, self-sufficiency. It's about understanding that the highest form of charity is not just to give, but to empower, to help others stand on their own.
Next time we have the opportunity to give, let's remember this teaching from the Rambam, and strive not just to give, but to uplift, to empower, and to transform.
