Full show transcript:

We play a lot of board games. Um I saw yesterday that there's a family that has a tradition of playing board games and they write the winners are.

on the box. Did you see that? I did, and I think it's a brilliant idea. I do too. Let the winners sign the box with the date. I think it's great.

I do too.

I think it's a great idea. I don't know. I saw it yesterday or the day before as well, and I thought this is genius, of course.

Yeah, because that's your reward. You get to sign the box.

I think that's fantastic. How many times can we play Boggle?

And how and there's not a box for a boggle. I'll make one.

I'm gonna make a piece of paper that just lives inside the boggle box.

I know that I'm kind of upset that we haven't done this before because there's been a couple of different times that I've won Settlers of Catam. Prove it. I can't. Yeah, I know. I'm so annoyed now. Because now if we start this, I won't win again. And I'm like, I won so many times.

Let's play Scotland Yard I love that game. I know you do. I just want to sign the box again.

That's all. Okay, we gotta do that.

I love the idea. I think it's so cool. Good.

I'm glad you saw it. So help me remember the next time we play a game. Sure. Let's play a game this weekend. Our daughter's always bothering us, not bothering. That's the wrong word. She's always like, let's play a game. I like playing games. Let's play a game. Let's have a board game day.

Can it not be clue? Can I veto clue? She loves clue. I know.

That's the one game she wants to play. I know. Oh no. All the time. We have so many games. We have so many games. Like we have to do it.

I think it's closets for it. Just a matter of she hasn't learned a lot of the games that we do like to play yet. So let's introduce her to some of those other games. All right. I think we just bought a new one that we haven't played yet. I wouldn't be surprised. Okay, I'm glad you're on board.

I think it's a cool thing. What is your hand doing? It's like a handshake. It's strange. That was a strange one. It wasn't extended for a handshake. It was held close in handshake form, but here. I don't know. I don't like that. That's a that's a pick. Let's go. Uh that's no. I don't like that.

All right. I'm sorry. Jeez Louise. Okay, just remember. Yeah. I will. I will remember. Okay.

Have uh have a fun time listening to today's show. Here it goes. Well, let's start off Friday by talking a little bit about uh football. Okay. Because I feel like last night's game was a little bit of a surprise.

I think it was a little bit of a shakeup, wasn't it? Because the Rams are like the super team is what I've been hearing.

That's what everybody kept talking about. They kept talking about how good this team was gonna be. How great that they uh have all of these amazing players and all of these things are just gonna make them just the the team debate.

And uh a lot of that hype centers around the fact that this year's Super Bowl will be held in Los Angeles. That's so fine. Interesting. Yeah, so they're like, well, yeah, like we gotta get the home team to play in the home game. The big home game.

Uh so I don't know. I mean, there's there's a lot going on there for sure, but last night's game was uh yeah, it was not uh not in the favor of Los Angeles, that's for sure. San Francisco won that thing. What was the score? Twenty-seven and seven twenty-seven to seven. That's uh for for the super team, not super not great performance.

But then there was a lot of excuses. Oh, of course. They had travel and they hadn't been in Australia for even 20 years.

Which was their strategic decision. And they had been in they they ended up being in Australia for a total of like 40 hours before the game. So their their strategy was we're gonna stay in LA, we're gonna train here, we're gonna practice at home, we're gonna fly over, we're gonna pretend it's a night game because we're gonna be on LA time. And that's that. It might have messed with the players for sure. There's potential for that, but the Niners had travel time too.

Yeah, but they spent 138 or something.

They spent like a hundred more hours in Australia.

Again, that's a decision, Australia.

Isn't it? That's correct. Yeah. It is. I'm just saying. Yeah.

And I do, I call I call the Los Angeles Rams the the teeth team. The teeth team? Yeah.

This'll be interesting. Go ahead.

Their coach Sean McVay has a lot of teeth. Yeah. And so does their quarterback. Yeah. It's got a lot of teeth. Stafford. Yeah. Between the teeth.

They're smiley, smiley boys.

They are some pearly white teeth.

Do you think they have the same dentist?

Maybe. Possibly. Ooh, they got some, they got teeth. Uh-huh. They got a lot of teeth. I told somebody once, God, they got a lot of teeth. Yeah. And she said to me, Don't we all have the same amount of teeth? I said, I just mean they're just present. Oh. The same amount of teeth, just present. I have a lot of teeth. I'm one to say. Listen.

We all have the same number of teeth. I did see uh there's a guy who is making uh fake posters and putting them up at uh like vacated buildings in his town. Oh, yeah. It's a coming soon, and one of them was a poster for a company that uh will add more teeth to your smile until you tell them to stop. Like, we'll add more teeth until you tell us to quit. Like, what a slogan. And then like all of the people on the poster have like humongous amounts of teeth. It's crazy. That's funny. Yeah, maybe they go there.

Well, what a sad loss to the Rams. Is it? No.

I just the hype, the hype is never good. No. If you're on a team and they start hyping you up before they've even seen you play, this is the first regular season game for them. Right. And they were put on this pedestal of you're uh, you know, and then they go, well, we're just gonna throw this game away anyway. We we can lose one. We can l and I went, you're just excuse after excuse me.

Now I don't like it. And I don't I don't mind the Rams. I wanted them to win, but I don't like when you get all arrogant. I don't like it. So little strength.

sorry, Rams Uh anyway, I just thought we'd get that out of the way first thing. So now that that's done.

Football at six in the morning. That's right. Do you know Aaron Jones Sr. Uh I've heard of him, yes.

You should have because he is a Minnesota Vikings running back. Yeah. So he grew up in a military household with parents who served, and he remembers the challenges of frequently moving when he was a kid, especially during the school year. And so to make sure that kids got a chance to head back to school this year feeling confident and ready to make new friends. He teamed up with his family's A all the way foundation to hand out brand new sneakers to over 500 military families, uh, which is pretty incredible. He did that at the United Heroes League headquarters. And the event also had uh like food trucks and games and photo ops for service members and their kids, uh, which is really cool. Aaron said it is such a joy uh and takes me back to when I was their age.

You want to start school off feeling the right way, fresh. Yep. And he says it's an easy conversation starter that can lead to friends. If you look good, you feel good. So I just want them to start school the right way with smiles on their faces. I think that's pretty rad. So uh over 500 different uh kids with brand new shoes.

Did you expect anything less from a Viking?

Um No. I mean, I I would not expect anything less, but uh way to go. Aaron Jones Sr. making it happen. Uh and uh congrats all those kids. That's cool. Yeah. Walking back in with fresh shoes. Look at my kicks. That's right. It's good news.

Our daughter, Emory, is in pre-calculus. Yes, which is gross. Why is that gross? I can't even I can't even figure out how she got that smart in math. That is definitely not genetics. Okay.

She's she's uh doing some some big things. I know, it's awesome. I mean, she's doing dual credit classes, like she's doing all kinds of stuff.

Loves it. She loves math. Uh it's a double gross.

So pre-Cal, it's an advanced math course that combines college level algebra and trigonometry to prepare students for the study of calculus. Wow. Isn't that fun?

I mean, I'm super proud of her. She likes it, she's good at it, and it's super great. Now she came home with a fancy calculator last night.

I've never seen a calculator like that thing.

I was blown away. Uh first of all, I didn't know that Hewlett Packard made calculators, but uh that feels like I should know that. Uh I mean, they make computers, so it would naturally make sense, but this thing is basically it's a

computer calculator with this whole touch screen. Yeah. Unreal. Um I had a Texas instruments, let's be clear. Like I had a pretty nice calculator that I uh when I was in high school that I had to get. And they were way expensive then. Yeah. For the like TI 86, I think is what I had.

I couldn't tell you anything about it. I just looked at some of the numbers she was showing us the number or some of the buttons, and I went, I don't even know. What's that? What's that sign? Yeah. What's what's that button do?

The TI 86 is now $21. And I guarantee it was probably a hundred bucks back then.

Oh, yeah. Those things were crazy expensive. Yeah. I think she has a I don't know what she has. Do you know what it is?

Oh, it's an HP graphing calculator.

Is it a T U T I 84? No. Okay. Why did you say no so quickly?

Because T I is Texas Instruments. Oh. So it's not a TI anything. Okay. So are we. It is the HP prime handheld graphing calculator. Is it? Yeah.

There it is. Look at the buttons on that thing. Yeah. I can't even. I can't even. What do those do?

What do you mean? What do they do?

You don't need all those buttons.

You don't know sign, cosine, tangent. You don't know all the graphing functions. No. Oh.

I need a plus button, a minus button.

Okay. You're not making graphs, are you?

When do you think I would ever make a graph? Uh I'd make a pie chart before I made a graph of anything.

Those are different. That's a that's a that's a visual display of data. That is not necessarily. I mean, that's that's the definition of a graph. So that's hard. Yeah. But a graphing calculator is not now.

No, listen to me. It's not uh I don't know how to explain this. It's not taking data in a spreadsheet form and making a chart of some kind. The graphing calculator is going to use mathematics to make a curve or a bell shape or whatever. There's math in there. Ew. Yeah. Math is such a bad word. No way. Yeah. It's good stuff. Um, yeah.

I'm just looking at this calculator going like wow. Somebody teaching you how to use all these buttons?

You'll learn about five of them. Oh, yeah. Yeah. You're an expert on this calculator. I learned sine, cosine, tangent and some of the simple algebraic functions of that calculator, but that calculator could do way more than I was ever taught or interested in learning.

I don't, I couldn't even tell you what sign and cosign do.

What was more fun was figuring out how to program games into it. That was way more fun. Because in the T I 86 back in the 90s, you could you could figure out how to build that sort of into like an early emulator and play games on it. It looked like you were doing math.

You know what I did on a calculator? I just used the numbers to write bad words. Oh, is that right? Because you're 12. Duh. Somebody hands me a calculator, I'm gonna be like, hmm, what can I do with this? Yeah.

Oh, look, a word upside down. Look at you. She's a smart one. I knew what I got into when I met you. I knew it.

If you could get any movie quote tattooed on your body, what would what would you get? Wow. Uh boy.

Something that's gonna be there forever. Yeah, yeah. Like it's gonna have to be uh it's gonna have to be a meaningful one. Okay, like it'd have to be something from like uh like The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, or it'd be something from it'd be a line from uh Goonies, or it'd be like it's gotta be something adventurous and uh about a journey or something.

Like I feel like it's gotta that would fit my lifestyle, and and that would be something worthwhile to put on there. I'm not gonna put on like big gulps, huh? Well, see you later. Like I'm not gonna put Because.

it's exactly what I'm gonna do. Not that one, but I have two ideas. Oh, great. Three ideas.

I don't know. Your your ideas are adding up.

One would be a blue duck.

Because I've never seen a blue duck. You would just get a blue duck. Just a blue duck. That's not the line from a movie. I understand. Yeah. That's from uh Adam Sandler's. Billy Madison. Billy Madison, yeah.

Uh second idea. The line that says Miss Lippy's car.

That's the same movie.

It's green. Yeah, I know it's my greatest.

So you're gonna get a green car and a blue duck. Yes. Stop it. No. I won't. And a penguin. Third idea.

Snack package.

That's also the same movie. I know. I That I mean, that is that is I would say probably the movie you know every single line of that movie and dance, and you can hear it on in the background and know exactly what's going on. Yeah. Like that movie is probably the most watchable. It's my favorite. Yeah. And I'm gonna gatekeep.

My kids think that I gatekeep by doing this, but when that movie came out.

Here we go. I'm a hipster. I knew about that movie before anyone else.

It's not that I knew about it before anybody else, but everybody thought that movie was so dumb. And I go, I think this movie is hilarious. And then Adam Sandler got famous, and everybody was like, Have you seen that movie? It's good. And I was like, oh. Now I'm annoyed.

What? I'm I'm looking up a couple of movie quotes. Okay. Uh movie quotes. Um I'm just trying to see if there's anything that's like super like worthy. Uh don't panic is a is a very common one. That's from Hitchhiker's Guide. Um, I could see that being on there. Uh a lot of Disney films. Uh people put uh Ohana means family to Infinity and Beyond. Like there's a lot of uh those kind of lines that people will get tattooed. Yeah.

I'm putting Miss Lippy's car as green.

Okay. Uh that'll do, pig. There's one. Oh. From Babe. Or from Shrek. That'll do, Donkey. That'll do. Like you could get uh one of those. Uh those are pretty good.

Um, Oh, that'd be fun to get something from like Princess Bride. There's a couple of uh lines like you seem a decent fellow. I hate to kill you. Like those are those are cool. I hate to die. Yeah. Yeah.

I mean, those are fine. I mean, you could get something serious from why when you could get something funny.

Like a green car, a blue duck, a snack pack, and a penguin. Why love it? Just four little tattoos in a line. Yes. Stop it.

Somebody's gonna sell that idea now. That's my idea. Hey, you listening. You're gonna steal that idea. That's my idea. Oh, I'm gonna be so mad.

I thought of this idea first.

You have a long-standing thing in your in your family when you were growing up, it was called a better road.

Yes, that's that is what it's called. I I'm glad that you called it what it is called, because for a minute you called it a good enough road, and I went, what are you even saying? Are you trying to talk about the better roads? Better roads are uh not always better roads.

No, they uh they always are. They're shortcuts, they're smooth sailing, they're never problems on better roads. Because here's here's what happens before GPS, when you'd go out for a camping trip, or you'd you know, be on an adventure or a drive, somewhere along the way, you'd be like, Oh yeah, I know a better road. And then you would take said better road, and it usually ended poorly. Uh it usually ended great. It always went smoothly.

Even okay, because this was something that your dad did.

Yeah, oh yeah. Better roads, better roads have been around in my family for a while.

Did the road were the roads better roads? Or did they end poorly when you were a youth as well. I just know as an adult, when you've taken our family on better roads, yeah, they are most certainly not better roads. Yeah, that's why they're called better roads. That's why it's called a good enough road.

No, no, I don't like good enough. You're changing tradition.

Positivity. Because the road, the better roads. That's a better road. The better roads you've taken us on have not been a better road.

When is the last time I took you on a better road?

It's been a long time because I think you realized this is not a better road. That's right. That is right.

That tradition has ended. Now I go, I know how to get there without going through all of the craziness of that better road that would have been a shorter drive. If the last could handle it.

The last time we went on a better road, it was years and years and years ago. We were going to Bear Lake to meet some friends to go camping. And we had a tiny little trail, like a cargo trailer.

It's a 4x8 cargo. Like a little uh flatbed utility trailer. Yeah. Yeah.

And we went past bone.

Yeah, I don't know why I decided I was going to take that road. I it was because I didn't want to take the little trailer on the freeway. Because of its tiny tires? I just got a little bit nervous about it, and I was like, I don't want to take this down that road. And there's a better road. Like this one's this'll be fine. Yeah.

It'll be cool. Well, that road decided to eat the tire on the trailer. Like it destroyed that tire. In the middle of nowhere. In the middle of nowhere with no cells. Yeah. That was that was tough. No spare tire for the trailer.

Yeah. One tiny little area that you had to mark with a rock where you could get service. Yep. And we had to call someone for a rescue. Your mom. That is correct. Your mom rescued us.

Brought me a spare tire and Off we went. And so back the other way, by the way. We didn't continue down the dirt road. We turned around and went down the freeway. That's what I should have done the first time.

I think that you probably would have taken a better road or a good enough road, is what I call them. Um I I think you probably would have again. But I think you know that I wouldn't have stopped complaining about it. Yeah. And so I think you're like, do I want to listen to Chantel complain about it? Or do I just want to that is true.

Maybe we'll just get there. Maybe we'll just make it to the destination without all that. Sounds great. Yeah. But sometimes you go you don't know where your end destination is. And I think that's where better roads come in clutch is when you are like, hey, listen, we're gonna go dispersed camping. We just aren't sure where we're gonna end up, but we're gonna go just travel. We're gonna follow some roads until we That's not like that's how it would end up for us.

Okay, but That's not the definition of a better road. The the better road is you already have a destination in mind. Instead of taking the regular route, you're taking a better road. Yeah. So that's different. I yeah. Better route.

There were also times where the destination was camping. Yeah. But the but the actual campsite wasn't necessarily determined. And that's where it was uh let's go take this road and see where this goes. This is a better road. And then you end up in a bad situation.

Yeah, you do that a lot, actually, now that I'm thinking about it.

That's better roading. That's taking a better road.

Why do I go anywhere with you?

Well, how else are you gonna find the off-beaten track fishing spots?

I'm also just thinking about the time that you got stuck in the snow

and I was thinking about that too. That was a stressful one. That one stressed me out.

And I don't get stressed until you get stressed. Yeah, I was stressed. And then I got oh geez.

I was having a bad day.

When you're calming influence is stressed, you better watch out. Yeah. When the person that maintains composure is freaking out. Time to panic. We survived. Okay. I want to talk about um I saw this thing on TikTok. It says, What's your favorite social contract between strangers? Can you think of anything off the top of your head?

Social contract. Like don't talk in an elevator.

Yeah, kind of some like unspoken, like stranger etiquette, but that are kind of nice. Like uh you get off before someone gets on an elevator.

Yeah, you gotta let it you gotta let it empty before you can fill it back up. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a rule. Yeah. Uh I would say uh right side of the walking path. Okay. Similar to cars. Yeah. Um, you know, that sort of seems to be the thing, but it doesn't always get followed by people, and then you go, why are you in the wrong lane? Are you James Bond? What are we doing? Because they drive on the wrong side of the road.

Not wrong side, but other side, I should say.

Some of these, I was reading some of the comments, and some of them are like nice ones. Like those are pretty standard ones, the ones that you're talking about, but these ones are like if I see a family on vacation and notice that the mom is taking the picture. I she will not have any pictures of herself. So I jump in and I take a million of the mom with her family. Somebody says, if I compliment your dress, I expect to learn whether it has pockets. Okay. All right. A thank you wave in traffic is always a nice thing.

Okay, that's fine. I don't mind that. Uh I would say uh back roads wave is is always a thing. And I get a little frustrated when I don't get a back roads wave back. Oh, yeah.

Like when you talk about back roads, that's like like on a country lane.

Yeah, like if I'm out in the country on uh country roads or if I'm outside of a city and I'm in a small town and uh, you know, and I'm driving down a road and I and I haven't seen a car in a while, and another car shows up, I do a little steering wheel kind of wave, and I go, hey. And if I don't get one back, I go, come on, man. Yeah. I haven't seen a friendly face in miles.

This is a social contract between strangers.

Yeah. Yep. I also uh I don't like it when I'm holding a door open for somebody and then they think they have to run. I go, don't run.

I most people do that, or somebody's waiting for me to do it.

I'm like in no hurry, it's okay. Yeah, you will run to cross the street too. Yeah, I'm like, I'm not you're not impeding on my deep.

Yeah, but some people are impatient though, and some people get mad because you're taking too long to the street.

In here because I'm rude with my coworkers. I like to hold the door open when they're a little ways away, and then right when they get to it, I shut the door. You're so nice. I know. They deserve it. You're awesome. Um you're awesome.

What about if you're in the elevator? You don't talk to people in the elevator. I know that we were just in an elevator with our kids, and you and I had a conversation before people come in and we and we just continued the conversation, and our daughter Emory was mortified. She was like, You guys talked in the elevator. Don't do that. It's fine. She goes, We face forward in the elevator.

Yeah, I like to also do that. I like to get in and just face the back and look at everybody like they've gathered for a conversation. No way. I can't be the center of attention like that. But that'd be fun. If I could, I would do that. Yeah, you wouldn't though. Yeah, but it'd be fun. I'd be like, hey, everybody.

You're too shy. Thanks for being here. Appreciate it. Everybody go into their uh respective floor. We got all the buttons pushed. We uh everything in order. Great.

I don't like setting next to the button. No. Do you feel an obligation? No. Or do you feel like you're in the way because everybody has to push a button?

Yeah, I feel like I'm in the way because people have to come in and then everybody looks to see if

they're not going to be able to do that. You don't want to be like a push like a bell man for that. Nope. Where you you go, which floor? No. And you go, 34th floor.

I'd like the the part of the elevator I like best. Oh, okay. It's in the back left corner. Back left corner.

I prefer back right corner. By the buttons. Yeah, by the buttons, no way, man. Yeah. Button side in the back. Oh, back corner.

I don't actually like that. Because if you get stuck back there, I actually like front left corner because that's kind of close to the doors. Yeah. That's the best elevator position. I disagree.

Right next to the door facing the wrong way. Toward the people. That's the best way. Break the social norms. Destroy them. Don't be a sheep. Come on. Bah.

Everyone hates riding it in an elevator with you now.

It's something I do regularly in town. There's where there's like six elevators in the whole city. Like the only time we ride elevators when you go to a larger city and you stay in a hotel.

Yeah. Well, there's an elevator at my other job. And I write it. I understand. I probably ride that elevator once a day. At least once a week. I got stuck on that elevator once. Yeah, I know. Anyway. Sometimes I have to take delivery people down the elevator. Yeah. And it's always an awkward. It's always an awkward ride in the elevator because you're like, what do you want to talk about?

You gotta come up with like uh like some cue cards to have in your pocket and you can pull them out and you could go. How's your day? Real simple, basic conversation starters.

How do you deliver how long have you been delivering? Right.

You have a delivery stack, you have like uh a couple different ones that you have repaired. You turn it over and you go. Do you like ice? Because you deliver ice, it says here on my card. Do you like that? Is that job cool?

Stupid. That's an ice joke, you could say. Or you could say, that's an icebreaker, which is also a funny joke. I got a list of icebreakers for the ice man. You like ice?

It's always just awkward. It's awkward.

Do you prefer your water solid or liquid?

No, no, no, no. Do you know how much a polar bear weighs? Enough to break the ice. You were shopping um yesterday for some ingredients and things that you needed for our meat weekend.

Calling it that. Why? Because it's that's so gross. Why? You're smoking some what is it?

Pork, pork shoulder. For the first time. Yeah. And so you I'm excited. I had to get some rubs. I had to get a spritzer bottle. I had to get some uh I got a uh an injector, a meat injector. I got like all kinds of different stuff to be prepared for uh for tomorrow morning early when I wake up and begin the process. I'm stoked for you. I'm pretty excited. I think this is gonna be a lot of fun.

I am excited to be the taste tester. Yeah.

So I've been talking to a couple of guys I know uh we talked about uh our buddy Dana. I I've been talking to him. He's a competitive barbecue guy, so I talked to him again last night about it a little bit. Um our boss, uh Jade here, he is a big uh meat guy, and so uh I've been talking to him a little bit about it and a lot of a lot of common themes here.

So I think I'm in I'm in good shape. I have a lot of things. Now here's something different that that our boss does that our barbecue competitor friend does not do. Oh a meat towel. Right.

He has brought in his meat towel before. It smells like meat. Yeah, it's gross.

He he likes to uh when he let after his meat's cooked and he's letting it rest, he wraps it up in in a towel and then puts it into a cooler so it can sit and just rest for a little while. But what's the point of that? Of the resting, yeah, resting is a big thing.

No, no, no, that part I get. What about what he's just drinking?

That's the point of the cow thermal and together and stuff, so that when it's when it's resting, it's still doing its thing because the fats and stuff in the meat are doing stuff. Uh huh. And so it that's why it stinks. It's a stinky meat towel. He brings it in. One time, which I'm grateful one time was too many. It stinks.

Um, okay. So that's not even what I want to talk about. Yesterday, you have been talking for a while about this butter roller that you watched.

Oh, I love a butter roller. Explain what it is. It's a butter roller. It's a little like four by four, four inch by four inch, uh, maybe three inch deep little metal pan.

Uh-huh. And you put butter in the little metal pan, and it has little feet on it. So when you set it on your blackstone, it melts the butter in there, and then it has a roller, like a little drum roller across the top with holes in it. And so anything, once the butter's all melty in there, uh, anything you roll across it gets butter. Yeah. Like a paint roller for butter. It's awesome. It's so cool.

Corn, hamburger buns, pancakes, you name it. Ice cream sandwiches. You just roll it across.

Anything you can imagine. You roll it across, buttered.

So as you're shopping yesterday, you see one at the store for 17 bucks and you go, it's 17 bucks. And I go, get it. It's 17. I know. And you didn't buy it there instead.

No, no. That was online. Online was 17. Oh. In person was 27. Okay. Well, you put it on your

elfster, which if you don't know what Elster is, it's like a gift wish app.

Yeah, it's like a wish list thing. Yeah. Because I I saw it and I went, I I can't find this locally, so I'm gonna throw it out there. And if somebody's looking for like a $17 gift idea, there you go. And then you sent me a text like immediately after I put it on there, and you're like, it's $17, just buy it.

Well, because I get notifications when people add stuff to

their one who follows my list got notified. And so I go, just buy it.

Why would you put that on your wish list? Just buy it. And you said you tell me all the time that everything I have on my wish list is too expensive. Which you do. No one's gonna buy you that butter roller. Just buy it. I bought it.

I found it locally and I bought it. Good job. And I also found some salt and pepper, not shakers, they're called dredges. Because that's fancy. I love a kitchen goods store. Like walking around looking at like knives and pans and stuff. Man, I'm glad you went there alone. Love culinary. And I really should have uh pursued that a little bit more seriously. Not that I don't regret being in radio. I love what I do, and this was always plan A. My plan B fallback was culinary school. And I kind of wish I would have gone for a little bit just to see.

Well, you still can. You can still take different classes and we know of a couple of different people who teach cooking classes. Yeah.

I just really like it. I like all the gear. I like the whole thing about it. You know the part I don't like? The clean dishes. I hate the dishes.

And that's the part I step in for. Because I don't like the cooking. And so that's why we make a great team. Yeah. Because you do all the cooking and I go, can I help? And you go, oh no, I got it. And I just kinda flip around and

Yeah, I kind of have my corner set up and I get my stuff going in my corner, and then I'm pretty good. If there's like a side dish or something, I'm like, yeah, if you want to build this salad or something. And then I go I didn't really want to help.

I know I asked if you needed any help, but what I meant was can I hang out on the table and and just talk at you?

Yeah, which is more often what happens. You scroll your phone and you go, oh no way. And I go, what? I'm cooking. And you're like, let me tell you about this.

You don't say what? I go, oh no, wait, listen to this. And then I just go into it. And you're half listening. You don't care. It's okay.

Anyway, I got a butter roller. I filled it with butter. Uh, and now it is uh it's covered, it's in the fridge, it's ready. So It's ready to go. when I get ready to make smash burgers or anything that requires some butter rolled on to something, I'm ready. You can put a whole steak, you can rub your whole steak on it. Buttery steak. You can do all kinds of fun stuff with that butter roller. It's cool. I'm excited for you. Yeah. Well get to butter is I will.

Okay. I was watching a video, and a woman had her sewing machine named. Um, so she calls it something. Yep. What does she call it? Uh I don't remember. That part's irrelevant. Okay. What I realized is that my sewing machine doesn't have a name. Yeah. And I know.

So you name a lot of things. You name your car. Yep. That's zippy. Yep. That's it. That's what I'm saying. I was trying to figure out if you've named other things. Uh I guess I guess you like traditionally you would name your boat.

Well, our we've named our kayaks. What'd you name your kayak? Yeah, buoy. Yeah, buoy. Uh-huh. You have to name it.

I don't even remember what I called mine. Uh it doesn't matter.

I can't remember. I wrote it down somewhere.

So what kind of uh what what brand of sewing machine do you have? It's a singer. Oh, okay. So you could name it after a famous singer, couldn't you? No. You could. I could. I don't want to. Okay. Because that seems lame. I just that's funny because it's a singer. No, I can't. Do you have a favorite singer? No. Like Frank Sinatra, you could call it Frank. No. Because it's a your favorite singer. See? That's a funny joke.

No, I get that. One, that's not my favorite scene.

I know. I'm just saying, who's who is? Couldn't tell you. Yoko Ono. She's good. You like her. What? You ever heard her sing? Well, it'll make paint peel.

Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa. It's not good. What you got beef with Yoko Ono. Who doesn't?

After what she did to the Fab Four? How could you not?

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Come in. Hot today, Chuck.

Uh no, but have you heard her sing? Yeah.

Everyone's heard her sing.

That's what you don't call it yoke.

I can't listen. I I'm not sure. I can't listen either. I'm not gonna judge her singing when I myself am not a singer.

Does it but your sewing machine is? See? It is don't name it yoko, because it could you want to name it after an actual singer, not whatever that is. Terrible noise. Anyway, what else you got?

I don't I don't have anything. That's why I asked you. I need I need some assistance. I need help. I know, Josh. I need something fun, funny, clever.

Does it need well? I was coming up with singers. I thought that was funny. It was funny. But but apparently not. You don't have a Bernina, so you can't call it like Bernie.

Sometimes I feel like things just have to happen naturally, though. Like it has to come organically.

I can't just you've had that thing for a decade and it hasn't come naturally.

I just didn't ever think about naming it before, but now I gotta name it. It has to have a name. And so then I'll say to you and the kids, I'm gonna go spend some time with Frank in the basement.

Yeah, no, that's weird. Don't don't call it Frank. Uh this person named theirs Rapunzel because they're always getting long threads wildly tangled. That's kind of funny. Mm-hmm. Um this person says I have a brother, so I just call mine bro. No. It's not that. Uh let's see. I know. You don't have a serger, so you can't play around with that. No. I don't have a searcher.

But it's gotta be something that sounds cool when I'm having a fine time sewing, and when I'm upset with it.

So when you yell at it.

So when I yell at it, it's gotta be like. oh! Yeah. I know, Josh.

There's a there's a couple of the there's uh Gladys and Sybil. Gladys. Those are Old lady names. I like Gladys. Gladys and Sybil. Um Gladys is a pretty good name.

I like Gladys. Florence. Gladys. Naomi. Somebody said Sophie. Ah. Huh?

That's funny. Hmm. Yeah. Taylor Stitch. Oh. No.

Oh, me Mabel. A lot of people are like.

Mabel's a good. You gotta have like old lady name. I like the old lady names.

I like Mabel and Gladys. Yeah. Well, pick one of those. Which one? You decide. Try them out. Okay.

Start sewing and be like, hey, Gladys, how you doing? Okay. That might work for you. Okay, I'm gonna write them down. You're gonna name your sewing machine. Look at you go. Forget. Yeah. Mabel. Yeah. Yeah. Mabel Gladys.

Do you have anything else? No. Okay. Florence. Florence is good. And then I could just call her flow.

When things are going well in your flow state.

Yeah.

Yeah. That's pretty good. Yeah.

And then when it's not flowing on this.

Florence? Yeah.

It's sounds whole name. Yes. I kind of dig on that. Okay. I got it down. We'll try them out. I'll try them out for size. Sounds good.

Good luck with your project of naming your sewing machine. Thank you, sir.

You gave me some really exciting news yesterday. Yeah.

Well, I found out yesterday that the uh the trend of filming Broadway plays and putting them out as movies. Or West End. Or West.

It's Broadway or West End. Fair enough. Six was West End, yeah, I get you.

But Broadway musicals, musicals, whatever. Uh however you wanted to find it. Uh the stage theater uh is making its way into movie theaters and it's happening in a big way. And I love it. And it's uh and it's really super cool because we've been able to see some stuff that we otherwise wouldn't be able to see because travel's expensive, tickets to the shows are expensive, hitting touring companies in our area is expensive. It's just not necessarily accessible to us the way that we would love it to be if we lived like in New York. I'm sure we would try to go as often as we could.

Even then it would be insanely outrageous. I'm sure we try to hit as many of them as we can, either at the Morrison or the Eccles, the Morrison and Boise or the Eccles in Salt Lake.

And then local theater productions are fantastic. We participate in all those. So seeing musical theater happen on the big screen uh and on you know, streaming service and stuff in your home is awesome.

It is super excited. Uh Hades Town and Six so far this year, uh, as far as the ones that w were released uh in 2027, it's been announced that O'Mary is going to be uh on HBO Max, which is the story of Mary Todd. Well, it's a a made-up story of Mary Todd, I suppose.

I think it mixes a little bit of history. I don't know. Yeah, I think it mixes a little bit of history because Lincoln is dealing with the Silver War. Yeah, and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln is like crazy. Okay, well, she just wants to go back and be an actress. Okay, so a gabberay star.

All right. Well, so this'll be quite interesting. I want to see it. And so in 2027, it will be on HBO Max. It's been or is being filmed uh on stage now, which I think is great. Now uh Maya Rudolph was filling the role of Mary for a while. Is that correct? And now they have a different actor uh who's uh portraying Mary. And I think that's who's going to be in the one that's filmed, not Maya.

No, Kola Skola is going to be the one in filmed perfect. And they're the one that wrote it.

Oh, that's fantastic. Yes, love it. That's great. Yep. Well, this will be uh this will be really fun. Um, and I look forward to it as well. And I hope that this trend keeps going. Like if you if you are a fan, you already know. But if you have never seen musical theater and you don't you know what you're getting yourself into, just pick one and go. It's such a such a cool.

Hades Town was so good.

People go, No, I don't like theater.

Oh, I don't like musical. Give yourself a chance. Hamilton's great.

Just give it a chance. Yeah. Because you will fall in love. It's it's really good. It's so good. Yeah.

Anyway, very exciting news, and I'm glad I could share it with you. Uh and the promos have been a lot of fun.

I think I gasped when you sent it to me. Did you? I bet you did. I think I did.

Yeah, that's a big moment for you. Because one, we wanted to see all memory. Uh, and two, uh, we're going to get to. So that's Woo-dee-woo. Yeah. 2027. Something to look forward to. Okay, I have a gift for you. Now you told me earlier. You like yesterday.

You were like really excited. You said, I have something for you, but I'm saving it. I'm waiting until we're on the air tomorrow to give it to you. I what is it? Okay. Do I need anything?

No, I need you to kind of look in that direction. Take that, take that pad. This note papers. Yep, put that to the side. What do you got there? I got some pencils. Okay. Um, why do you have pencils there? And why do you have six of them?

Well, I love the pencils because I like to write with them. Okay. Uh, and they have erasers and they are in order of sharpness. Yeah. And then why do you keep them there? This is a good storage spot.

Okay. I don't keep them in a mug because if you keep them in a mug, then your your sharpness gets doled out. How do you sharpen them? How do I sharpen them? Yeah. I borrow an electric sharpener from the city.

Well, look what I have for you. Oh, Bostitch. You weren't as excited as I thought you were gonna be.

Well, uh, how does it work? Do you know?

No, it's an electric pencil sharpener.

Well, let's see. Okay. Let's see. Your very own. Let's see. Hold on. Hold on. Okay. I've got a long cord.

I mean, because you had to borrow the pencil sharpener before, and then you would have to take all your pencils down and sharpen them.

No, I would bring the pencil sharpener down here. Okay. And then sharpen them and then hold on. Okay.

Um, you know, you think someone's gonna be really excited when you show them a gift, and then their reaction is less than what you control your expectations.

Hold on. Okay. What if it doesn't work? Okay. How are you gonna feel then? Did you try it out? No, I didn't try it out. Okay. I just assumed it would work. Well, we're gonna find out.

Okay. We got her powered up. Let's grab one that's not very sharp.

It's from the back of the pie. Let's see. Oh.

It sounds like it's sharpening. You know, it's doing a pretty uh good job. I'm I'm not mad about it at all. Look at that thing go. Well, well, well. That one goes in the front now.

That's the sharpest one. What do you know? Hold on. Let's do another one.

This one's pretty dull too. Do you when you sharpen a pencil? Do you just put it in there? Do you turn it? Uh do you know the last time you sharpened a pencil? No, no. I give it a turn while I'm sharpening. Wow. Yeah.

That way I don't get a weird flat, non-sharp spot. Okay, but how do you feel about your gift? Pretty excited. That was a good that was a good whistle. Man. I have six very sharp pencils. Look at that.

With your very own pencil sharpener. I feel pretty good about it. Do you? Pretty excited. Yeah. That's a nice find.

A good old sturdy bostach. Look at that. Thank you. It's a good gift. I'm Pretty pretty excited. You're pretty excited now. Yeah. Okay. Well, I had to make sure it was gonna work, right? Like what if it was just bad?

Like if it if it left like a not sharp pencil, I might have been bummed out, but I'm pretty excited. about it. It Works. Now I gotta find somewhere to store. Oh. Yep. That's gonna be a thing.

That's gonna have to be a problem you solve. Yeah.

Well, Andrea down the hall, she'll be quite excited that I don't have to borrow hers once every other month.

You borrow it, so you take it out of her office and bring it down here.

It's in a it's in a drawer in her office. Okay. Who leaves a pencil sharpener just plugged in? No way, dude. Random people coming by to sharpen their pencils. No, thank you. This is this is uh Okay, but this is mine.

What I think it's funny is you would borrow it and bring it down here. Yeah. What you should have done is just taken all your pencils down there and then just in her office.

Do a whole box, get a brand new box, like 12. I'm gonna be here a minute. These ones were all flat when I started. It's gonna take a second. That would be awful. Completely disruptive. I could take this to someone else's office.

Who do you not like today? This is my pencil sharpening space. Yeah, I'm gonna do this for the next 10 minutes. Mind me. Oh, uh not would you rather? That's coming up. We're not at Would You Rather yet. But we will be here shortly. I was unprepared. I was not fully prepared to start talking. Uh and that's and that's on me.

That's on me, but it's gonna be okay. Uh listen, uh we we haven't really spent much time focused on it this morning, uh, because it feels like it's incredibly well known and uh understood what today is. I will say today marks 25 years, uh, which is pretty wild to think about. Uh 25 years ago, uh today is the anniversary of um of 9-11.

It is a National Day of Remembrance, it is Patriot Day, uh, and we do want to honor the memory of the nearly 3,000 victims of the uh terrorist attack in 2001. Uh all of the first responders and countless others, all of the helpers. Uh I I believe Mr. Rogers always put it best when he said, look for the helpers, look for the people because there's chaotic news all the time.

Right. And if you look for the helpers, that's the people uh that you really want to focus on the story. That's the part where you go, look. There are there is so much good in wrapped in so much chaos. And so uh again, I just uh I I never know what to say. I mean, obviously it's something that if if you were alive then you f you remember incredibly vividly. Yeah. Uh it's always interesting because uh things happened, you know, for for people in uh who are in elementary school, you know, they time stopped. I was working. I was you know, I didn't started in radio just yet, but I was uh working on starting my radio career 25 years ago, and that was like I started September 27th was my first day on the air.

So it was like I wasn't in the media. I was literally I was working overnights, uh getting ready for a holiday reset at Target. That was my job, and I remember getting ready to leave that morning and going into the break room and sitting there and just disbelief of what was going on. You were in college at the time, um, which was a good a completely different experience. It's there, there are those sort of markers in your life where you go, I'll never forget where I was on this day.

Um, and everybody has those kinds of stories. So um obviously we want to, you know, definitely take time to uh honor the memory of those lives that were lost that day and uh to the heroes and the people that um you know rose to the occasion. Uh there's not enough gratitude to ever say like thank you enough for that. Um so uh take time today. Uh obviously it's it's a heavy one for a lot of people. So if if you need help, you need to talk to somebody, there are resources available, so please reach out. Um it's it's a hard day. And a lot of things are very vividly in color memory for a lot of people. So uh take care of yourself today.

That would be my recommendation. Um and you can't say like happy remembrance day. That's not a thing, but we certainly honor those that were lost today. Well said, Josh. Okay. Well, I didn't want to go without mentioning it in the show. I think it's an important thing.

I just never know what to say. We're an entertaining show. Yeah. And it's hard to shift gears and go, okay, let's be serious for a minute and and and offer some sort of um condolence or memorium of of the moment. But it is important. So anyway. Uh good job. Celebrate your Patriot Day appropriately today. And uh take a minute. A moment of silence is always good. Just reflect. Absolutely. Would you rather this or that?

Would you rather have your hand shrink like a cotton shirt in the dryer when you get hot or have them deflate into boneless flesh balloons when you get cold?

What a weird what your hands.

shrink... No, I heard you. Or they deflate like a balloon. But also, I don't have like cotton shirts shrinking.

It's wool that shrinks.

Okay, so your hands shrink like wool shirts in the dryer. Or they get real tiny. Or they deflate into flesh balloons when you get cold. Rose. I'm gonna go with uh shrinking. Yeah.

I'm not having bone bags. No way. Ugh. Gross. Yeah. Yeah. I've got to have functioning hands, even if they're little. Okay. Plus I'll get warm And then they'll be normal. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You will.

I'm not No, it's they shrink like flesh balloons when you get cold.

No, no. And then they shrink like sweaters when they get hot. Yes, correct. Yeah, well, I'm just gonna keep them cooled down. I'm not doing that shrunken up balloon hands. Gross. Yeah. That's a weird one. That's probably the weirdest one you've ever come up with.

I didn't even come up with that one. I somebody else did. I Googled it. What? Josh, I've been you're creative.

I know. You're capable.

I know. But guess what? I've been doing this for a lot of years. It's hard to come up with new ones all the time. So yeah, I used a little help today. Okay. And I didn't use AI.

All right. Well, I appreciate that. But you did come up with some gross words.

I didn't come up with it. Somebody else did.

Boneless flesh balloon. Ugh. Would you rather this or that? So we are uh getting here ready to close out the show. There was a lot of words for the one little sentence. Getting here ready.

You sounded in close out. like you were going to say something serious.

Here's the here's the deal. We're closing out the show for the week. We're going into meat weekend.

Stop saying that. I don't like it.

And I am pretty excited. I'm excited to wake up early tomorrow and get started. Like I'm I'm trying to figure out what other prep I need to get done to be ready to go. Okay. Uh so uh like I'm real excited about it.

That's I am kind of excited that you're gonna be involved in that project because I have a bunch of projects that I need to work on.

Do you know how long this project is going to have me involved?

I mean, it's gonna take you some time in the morning, and then you just kind of let it sit. Yeah. I understand, but you're gonna have to keep checking on it and sorry.

I'm gonna work on the yard a little bit. I've got some stuff. I might I might finally break into the shed. I've been meaning to get that so far.

I was gonna ask you that.

I kind of need to get the backyard finally kind of wrapped up so that I can be ahead of my fall harvest for the garden. Yep, and my prep for next year. Like I got I've got garden bed prep that I'm working on. I got a few things happening right now.

And I think maybe it's time to take the air conditioners out. Do you? I'm gonna wait a minute. Why?

Like I know the highs aren't like 90s.

No, I know, but I kind of like sleeping with the window open. This is the time to do that. Well, it's just barely. Okay.

Let me look. Let me look. Okay. 83 today, 85, 73, 67, 73, 79, 82, 81.

Oh, so it is still pretty.

Still in the 80s for a good little while.

It was warm last night. I turned on the air last night.

Yeah, it was like 60 something this morning.

Sweating. Yeah.

This weekend is still warm. Like I leave them in. Like we've got Monday night, overnight low 34. That's a little weird one. Uh-huh. Most of the rest of them, all the rest of these are in like mid to upper 40s. And then when we get down toward like the 25th of September, it's getting a little colder. Down into the 60s, uh, which is where I think once we get give me another week or so. Okay. And and uh and then we'll pull them.

Okay. I just like the crisp morning air sometimes. No, I understand. But okay. I'll wait. But okay. I'll wait, Josh. Okay. It's okay. Yeah, give me a week or so. Um, all right. So you're gonna be busy on some of your projects.

Yeah, I think so. I'm thinking I'm gonna be doing a lot in the backyard

and some projects in the house I gotta work on. Meat. Doing the meat. Okay. Okay. I'm excited. Meat weekend. Why don't you like that? I don't know. It just sounds gross. Does it? Yeah.
