The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast October 16, 2023 for the first Monday in a while while!  Tonight in our first New Muses Monday in quite some time, there were a lot of albums dropping from space and huge announcements as well.  The foremost in our first hour being the second career solo album from Alabama Shakes vocalist Brittany Howard, who dropped the title track to the What Now LP, slated for release next year.  First hour we had new albums to talk about from L'Rain, Helena Deland, Jamila Woods, and veteran Japanese band Lamp.  Once we hit part three, the big bomb to drop is the latest LP from Bad Bunny, and we also had Pink Pantheress dropping a solo album in just a few weeks' time.  Great stuff from the Korean indie and bubbling under K-pop scene as well in part 4, with ADOY heading to SXSW Sydney next month along with tunes from Summer Soul and Chamsom to check out, amongst others.  Whew!

Part 1
Brittany Howard – What Now
- Big news here as the Alabama Shakes singer-songwriter is ready to release a 2nd solo album and first in 4 years’ time.
- You might remember Howard releasing the stellar Jaime back in 2019, and now the follow-up effort is ready for its closeup although the official date has been announced but we do know the album title, as that was the title track What Now.
Rachel Chinouriri – The Hills
- Very interesting background to this joint and a big announcement, as the UK-based on the rise singer-songwriter is ready for a debut LP sometime next year, and this is the first taste of that although like Howard’s forthcoming 2024 album we have yet to get a date.
- The song stems from Chinouriri spending a month in LA and generally feeling out of place and disconnected, and this song was formulated at the end of that experience, with the artist realizing that the UK is truly home in the end.
The Last Dinner Party – My Lady of Mercy
- This is the 3rd single put out by the London-based band, who’ve gained quite the following despite the low output so far.
- This track was produced by James Ford, known for work with Haim, Florence + The Machine, and host of other quality acts. A very dark track, the song explores the crushing weight of teenage crushes, taking cues from NIN, PJ Harvey, and Roxy Music.
flyingfish – blurry
- Still no bio information on this artist, so not much to say there, but we’ve been impressed with this artist’s output thus far.
- This tune is, as the title suggests, blurry, with a powerful shoegaze wall of sound arrangement that pulls no punches, and is the 2nd tune on “the way the night falls,” which is an EP that just dropped Friday, which is the artist’s 2nd EP drop of the year.
boygenius – Black Hole
- The inevitable left on the cutting room floor EP release for the all femme supergroup is here, and after The Record comes of course, The Rest.
- It seems to be that, and you can tell why this song and the others didn’t make the debut album from boygenius, but still…it’s boygenius, so it’s still very decent and worth a full spin.
L’Rain – 5 to 8 Hours a Day (WWwaG)
- One of the best new albums of the weekend, is from this artist, true name Taja Cheek.
- Cheek is based in Brooklyn, and the album is called I Killed Your Dog. A very surrealist album, the artist’s 3rd career LP is an incredible baroque dreamscape, eschewing Cheek’s previously introspective style for something more mischievous and Dali-esque.
Lewis OfMan – Frisco Blues
- This is an artist to watch out of France whose last collaboration with Empress Of was a real treat.
- With this single, the artist has announced both a forthcoming LP due out next year and a European tour set to start much sooner.

Part 2
Lamp – Alone In My Room
- Great release from the veteran Japanese band over the weekend, this tune being a glimmering star on the very impressive double album.
- Beginning with 2003’s debut Soyokaze Apartment, this would be the band’s 8th career LP, and is a very worthy listen front to back.
Helena Deland – The Animals
- Another very talented artist out of Montreal is out with a career 2nd LP as of Friday.
- The record is called Goodnight Summerland, which we’ve discussed with previous single releases, and available everywhere now if you want to take a front to back dive on that.
Jamila Woods feat Saba – Practice
- Channeling what is unquestionably famed NBA pg Allen Iverson’s most famous quote right here, “Practice,” is the final advance single from Woods’ new album Water Made Us, and features a guest verse from her Chicago peer Saba.
- Water Made Us is out in full as of Friday if you wanna take a deeper listen on that, but do be warned if you’re looking up the video it’s not totally not safe for work, but very borderline.
The South Hill Experiment feat Jeff Parker – Parker Solar Probe
- Interesting band here that is certainly an experiment, with daring being the watchword in their live production method.
- They state that the most exciting time to make music is always right now, and eschew careful rollouts and production for a more careening approach, with this tune featuring Tame Impala’s Jeff Parker on the cut so you know they got chops.
Benny Sings – Sailing
- Fast becoming a major foreign favorite here in Korea, the Dutch-born LA-based Benny Sings dropped this cover over the weekend.
- This is a celebration of the original and the entire catalogue in fact of Christopher Cross, with the OG being a #1 hit back in 1979.
Car, The Garden – The 4th Summer
Car, The Garden – DIAMOND
- One of our own indie favorites here in Korea is obviously proving quite popular, as Car, The Garden t/n Cha Jung-won is set to play two nights on the trot at Seoul’s Olympic Hall.
- The dates are Nov 18 & 19, get your tickets asap if you wanna go check the live vibes.

Part 3 – Poppin Off!
Bad Bunny – MR. OCTOBER*
- Undoubtedly the biggest LP to drop this past weekend, Bad Bunny’s latest LP and 5th career is out as of Friday.
- The title is nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana or Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow, availble everywhere now from the Puerto Rican rap superstar.
Ice Spice feat Rema – Pretty Girl
- Interesting collab here as American artist ice spice teams up with on-the-rise Nigerian afrobeats star Rema on this banger of a cut.
- Last week saw Ice Spice announcing that she would be the first guest on the season premiere of SNL, which aired last Saturday, with this single coming out the day prior.
Pink Pantheress – Capable of Love
- The British throwback singer dropped this last Friday along with a massive announcement, as the artist announced a debut album featuring the aforespun Ice Spice along with Mura Masa, Cash Cobain and others.
- Not a long time to wait as well, with the Heaven Knows LP will drop in full Nov 10.
Fred again... feat Jozzy – ten
- After the summer saw an anthemic hit from Fred Again featuring Agbonjayar called adore u, we have this rather chill follow-up featuring American artist Jozzy on the collab.
- Fred again stated that the song is about missing home, which has been a sharper feeling of longing, and I gotta say I’m in that boat myself. It has been a while, man.
Troye Sivan – One of Your Girls
- A quite solid and eagerly anticipated new album is out from the artist over the weekend titled Something to Give Eachother.
- This would be the 3rd studio album from the Aussie singer-songwriter, and the most sensually and romantically focused yet. Go give it a shout if you like what’s coming up, the fans seem to be really enjoying this record since it dropped Friday.
Holly Humberstone – Paint My Bedroom Black
- Just out this weekend is the debut album from the very much on-the-rise British singer-songwriter, of which this tune is the titular cut.
- Per the Guardian’s 4 star review, the album ”combines lyrical navel-gazing with expertly crafted choruses” which we could not have said more aptly here. Go check it out, (repeat).
Chelsea Cutler – Loved By You
- And real quick also out as of Friday is the sophomore LP from Chelsea Cutler, which is called Stellaria.
- The record is mainly focused on falling in love, and is quite the change of pace for Cutler, so go give that one a spin if you’re into what’s coming up.

Part 4 – Fresh K Cuts
ADOY – Avenue
- Big shouts to this band, who’ve been making waves all year and released the PLEASURES LP in late August, on which this tune features.
- The band are gearing up to feature at SXSW in Sydney later this week on Friday, so go knock em dead, fam.
Summer Soul feat Jueun – Ride
- This is the latest from t/n Jang Eun-sung, who is an independent singer-songwriter out of Gimpo.
- The song is the a side to a 7” limited single with another joint called Ruby on the flip.
Matter Halo – Million (hanbee remix)
- The main artist here is an indie duo out of Jakarta who made debut in 2015, and just released a dance EP of remixes from some of their favorite artists.
- Here we see on-the-rise singer-songwriter hanbee, who’s Korean and has grown up in New Zealand, give it an ethereal reworking. Both very good artists to keep an eye on moving forward.
Hamzzi – plant
- This is part of a new album that dropped towards the middle of last month on the 17th called howdoifeel.
- Ham-jji appears courtesy of Mirrorball Music, the largest indie label and distributor in the country.
soowoo feat amin – Stay
- This is the latest from an artist that only made debut back in 2021 with a tune called what should I do and featured a collab with dori.
- Not a lot of bio info to glean here, and a very nascent discog, but a decent recent in our own opinion.
Chamsom – Shimmer
- Another week, another great release from local indie imprint MOS along with Poclanos, this one from one of our favorites.
- Chamsom is a veteran trio that debuted way back in 2010, but they haven’t lost a step in the intervening.
Joonand – Alone
- Here’s an artist that’s very new to us and so new in fact that we have no idea how to pronounce properly.
- The artist has been releasing music since debut in 2019, but that’s about all there is Korean or English, this of course being the latest.
