Thinking for Others

One of the easiest traps in leadership is becoming the person with all the answers.
It usually starts with good intentions.
You're experienced.
People trust you.
You can solve problems quickly.
So naturally, people come to you.
The challenge is that every answer you provide teaches something.
Sometimes it teaches people how to think.
Sometimes it teaches them not to.
I've noticed that many highly capable leaders unintentionally become bottlenecks.
Not because they lack skill.
Because everyone learns to rely on their judgment.
Real leadership isn't simply about solving today's problem.
It's about increasing the thinking capacity of the people around you.
That often means asking questions instead of providing answers.
Creating reflection instead of rushing to conclusions.
Helping people make sense of situations for themselves.
The immediate solution may take a little longer.
But over time, capability expands.
People become more confident.
More independent.
More thoughtful.
And leadership becomes less about carrying everyone else's thinking and more about helping it develop.
