Real skin, real science, real confidence with Dr. Zaid Hussain. Welcome to- Skin Side Out
[00:00:07] Speaker 2: Welcome to Skin Side Out. I'm your host, Dr. Zane, with Heather and Courtney. So I thought we'd use this episode to do something fun. We're gonna call this Rate the Rave. So we're gonna go through, uh, common skincare products that are trendy right now, and letting you guys know what we think about them.
We're gonna score them from a score from one to 10, 10 being highly recommended and one being don't waste your money. So let's get straight into it. All right. So first, we're gonna start off with snail mucin. So there's a lot of products with snail mucin. Thoughts, Courtney? Um, I'll be generous. I'll give it a three.
[00:00:44] Speaker 3: Wow. Yeah. Why? I don't think it's the worst thing in the world to use. I don't think it's gonna change your life. I thought you were gonna say, like, a seven. I mean, I'll grade it to a four. What about you, Heather? Um, I would say maybe a f- five. I think, yeah. It's lackluster. Yeah. I think people who use it do really like it.
Mm-hmm. I've actually never used it personally. Me either. Um, so maybe my rating would change if I tried it, but- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm ... I think, you know, yeah, it can help with moisture. Mm-hmm. That's it. But there's so many things you can use for moisture. Yeah. So I would give it... I'll go right in between, four. Mm-hmm. Um, you know, it's a nice add-on, but it's not an essential.
[00:01:29] Speaker 2: It's not gonna do that much more than some of the other great moisturizers we have on the market. Mm-hmm. Um, mucin is, you know, hydrating, yes. Mm-hmm. Um, but ceramides, I think, have an alternative function, too, to repair the skin barrier. Mm-hmm. So, eh. Yeah. I agree. I think it's a little misleading. I think people thought this was gonna be, like, this, like, end-all be-all- Like CosRX is the big brand
[00:01:50] Speaker 4: yeah. Yeah. And actually, you had a patient yesterday- Mm-hmm ... I did a consult with. Yeah. Um, younger girl, and she said she... You know, maybe this is a one-off, but she was like, "Yeah, my skin was, like, horrific after using snail mucin." Oh. Oh, interesting. And, but like I said, maybe it's just... Who knows? All right.
[00:02:07] Speaker 2: Pimple patches. Thoughts? I would say an eight. I was gonna say an eight too. I think, uh, you know, I think they're up there, but the reason why I wouldn't go higher is because I think for certain types of acne, they can actually just, like, deroof the acne. So like, like whiteheads for example. I think it's great to use it for- pimples that you feel like you're gonna touch- Mm-hmm
[00:02:35] Speaker 3: and pick at. And also it kind of, like, um- It's cute ... yeah, it's cute. Right. It, whether or not you're doing, like, the skin colored or, like, the neon ones, rocking it. Um, I think with certain whiteheads, if you put it on, it'll pull things to the surface. But then if you peel it off, if that top of your pimple is very fragile, it's just gonna pull the skin right off a- after that.
And I've had that happen- Mm-hmm ... multiple times personally, so that's why I wouldn't go higher than an eight. Mm-hmm. What about you? Yeah, I think eight- Yeah ... as well. I think, um, you know, I think to avoid picking those spots- Mm-hmm ... it does work wonders. Mm-hmm. And it just even acts as a little reminder. Maybe you're touching your face, you feel that pimple patch.
[00:03:15] Speaker 4: Like, okay, let me, let me, you know, get it off. Yeah. I don't... Same thing. I, I have had that happen where it's, depending on the pimple patch- Mm-hmm ... um, there really should be kind of like a cotton- Mm-hmm. Yeah ... you know, part to it so that's not ripping- Mm-hmm ... you know, that off, so. Yeah. But it's good for, like hydrocolloid dressings- Yeah
[00:03:32] Speaker 3: in general are good for, like, wound healing too. Yeah. I give it a five. Mm. And here's why. I feel like many of the pimple patches have actives that are kind of concentrated there. Mm. And people get a lot of irritation from them. Yeah, I don't like- Mm ... the ones that have additives. Just the straight hydrocolloid- Just h- mm.
[00:03:47] Speaker 2: I think that's cool. Yeah. It's a good barrier, it's hydrating. Mm-hmm. Um, but many of the acne pimple patches are geared with- Mm-hmm ... you know, these active ingredients, mostly acids- Mm-hmm Mm-hmm ... um, that can be kind of irritating. Mm-hmm. You know, they make, um, bug bite patches now. Oh. Mm-hmm. Smart. Hmm. Yeah. They have, like, a little bit of, like, cortisone in them or- Mm.
[00:04:06] Speaker 4: Mm-hmm ... um, like, witch hazel. Oh, that's actually a brilliant idea. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Cool. All right. Next, Differin Gel. I feel like our ratings are gonna be very different. Really? I think, I think very highly of Differin. Like- Not when we did our Sephora episode. You were like, "Why would I ever use Differin?"
[00:04:25] Speaker 3: Because not for me. Oh, Heather, Heather calling Courtney out. I love it. Not for me. I would give Differin a se- a seven. Not for you, though? I personally wouldn't use it, because it's not- ... intended for me. Oh, okay. I think Differin is a phenomenal acne treatment for teenagers. Yeah. I think if you are a teenager and you're starting to get your first little remnants of acne, I, I would 100% go tell them to get Differin.
[00:04:48] Speaker 4: Okay, yes. I agree. I think- I thought you were gonna rate it low. No, I love Differin. Okay. It's not a retinoid that I, I think tri- No one is better in terms of collagen production and, you know, helping with fine lines, wrinkles- Yeah ... texture, things like that. But I think it does hold a special place in my heart for those young, acne- Yeah Yeah
kids. Yeah. Yeah. I would give it, like, a seven. Yeah. I think it is a really nice place to start. Yeah. I give it a seven also. Okay. Um, it's very accessible, too. Mm-hmm. And it's easy to tolerate. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Next product, Medicube Pink PDRN Serum. Thoughts? Zero. Oh. One. Okay. They tried. Yeah. Yeah, I give it a one too.
[00:05:29] Speaker 2: So what are your thoughts behind that? It's so easy to slap the word, you know- Mm-hmm ... the acronym I should say, PDRN, on there. And Heather, what does that stand for? Polydeoxyribonucleotide. And where are they coming- Where, and where is this coming from? Salmon. Salmon sperm. Sperm and- Did it really cost them that low- Low
[00:05:49] Speaker 3: to extract this or gather- Yeah ... the PDRN? I, how much is in there? How much is in there? Where in the ingredient list is it? Yeah. How much of it is in it? Yeah. And, you know, like, they could be adding the tiniest little bit. Mm-hmm. Who knows if it's processed. I think a lot of skincare products- Skincares like that
[00:06:01] Speaker 2: do that. I agree. They
[00:06:04] Speaker 3: advertise that it- Yeah ... and then it's, like, at the very bottom- Yeah ... of the ingredient list. PDRN, this year, I feel like has been a really hot treatment. Oh, yeah. And it's been put... It, and I actually saw a video of a creator, um, like, last week, and it was, like, it was funny. It was like, niacinamide thinking it's, like, the most commonly, like, um, added ingredient to skincare products, and then it was, like, PDRN coming in this year.
[00:06:27] Speaker 4: Oh. 'Cause, you know, they put niacinamide in, like, almost everything. Yeah. Yeah. And it's funny 'cause now it's like, yeah, I feel like PDRN is in, like, everything. Mm-hmm. But again, it's just, like, kind of a buzzword. Like, yeah. Yeah. Where is it coming from? How much? Where are you getting it sourced from? Like, all of, you know, all of these things.
Yes. And I feel like people are, like, searching on social media what products have, you know, X, Y, Z that they're seeing on TikTok. And, you know, the product just has to list that ingredient, and someone might just buy it because of that. Mm-hmm. Do you think it matters if it's farm-raised or wild salmon as far as the efficacy?
I would think that the, the fish in the sea are a little- Yeah. ... happier than the farm boys, but I don't know. All right. Um, let's go on to a cult favorite. St. Ives Apricot Scrub. Is that still a cult favorite? Uh- Oh, people, a lot of people still use it ... pe- people still use it. Not as much. Yeah. I would say a two.
[00:07:18] Speaker 3: Yeah. I say negative five. Yeah. Uh- It has a nice smell. Do we like smells in dermatology? Apricots. I know, it probably has fragrance in it. No. And, like, the, the scrub is very irritating. Yeah. It is. It's jagged and, like, I think they've had studies that show, like, it actually, like, really damages that skin barrier.
[00:07:38] Speaker 4: Yeah. The pieces are not, uh- They're not uniform ... perfectly spherical or uniform. Yeah. And so yes, there are studies- Aren't they plastic too or something? They might be. Those are the...
Oh ... on
Some kind of nut.
Like a tree nut.
[00:07:49] Speaker 2: Wow.
[00:07:50] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[00:07:50] Speaker 3: Interesting.
[00:07:51] Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
[00:07:51] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:07:52] Speaker 3: Okay.
[00:07:52] Speaker 4: And that's why, yeah, they're not like per- because sometimes you'll see an exfoliating scrub. Oh. And that's why like I know like, um, Zeo is like, I, when I used to use their, uh, polishing whatever. Mm-hmm. They're like, yeah, they're perfectly spherical, so that's why they're not like creating friction on the skin.
Mm-hmm. 'Cause you're rolling it and it's, you know, rolling with the skin. But yeah, I, I do remember- Oh ... it was like cut up nuts.
[00:08:11] Speaker 2: Yeah,
[00:08:12] Speaker 3: I mean. So it can be very irritating.
[00:08:13] Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. Oh,
[00:08:14] Speaker 2: very.
[00:08:15] Speaker 4: Yeah. I would imagine if you have a tree nut allergy it'd probably be...
[00:08:18] Speaker 3: I think that's a different- I would, yeah, but I mean it's separate
that's a
[00:08:20] Speaker 2: different mechanism. I
[00:08:20] Speaker 4: mean, I know, but I don't know. Like No,
[00:08:22] Speaker 3: but if, if they're like rough little pieces, imagine, imagine rubbing that on-
[00:08:26] Speaker 4: What if you accidentally eat one? I,
[00:08:27] Speaker 2: I, I don't think that-
[00:08:30] Speaker 4: You eat your sunscreen sometimes. You've said that. Oh. He does. Pull up, roll the tape.
[00:08:33] Speaker 3: Yeah. Just puts a shot glass up.
Yeah.
[00:08:36] Speaker 4: No, you said sometimes you rub it in so fast- And it- ... that it gets in your mouth ... yeah. So what if that happened with the, with the walnut pieces? I
[00:08:42] Speaker 2: think they're probably like little extracts of the shell. I don't think you're gonna get anaphylaxis from it.
[00:08:49] Speaker 4: I don't wanna be the one to find out. Just be
[00:08:49] Speaker 3: careful if you're allergic.
[00:08:50] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. But I, I am guilty of using this one when I was a teenager, so.
[00:08:54] Speaker 4: I did, too.
[00:08:55] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. And I felt like the more I scrubbed, the more I felt- Yeah ... the cleaner I was getting. Mm-hmm, yeah. And I would just like jack my skin. But then my
[00:09:01] Speaker 4: face would be like so red after. Oh, yeah. Like scratch marks. Yeah, yeah.
Like, not good. Not good.
[00:09:06] Speaker 2: All right. Let's move on to hypochlorous spray. Thoughts?
So some brand name hydrating I'm gonna give
[00:09:14] Speaker 4: it a nine.
[00:09:15] Speaker 3: Yeah, I was gonna say nine.
[00:09:16] Speaker 2: Yeah. Wow, that is high.
[00:09:17] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[00:09:18] Speaker 2: Okay. Okay.
[00:09:19] Speaker 4: I think it's, you know, antimicrobial. It's, you know, anti-inflammatory. It's
[00:09:25] Speaker 3: gentle.
[00:09:25] Speaker 4: Gentle. Anyone can use it.
[00:09:27] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:09:28] Speaker 3: It's a nice- It's easy to use ... like after workout spray. Mm-hmm. Especially if you're, like, acne prone.
[00:09:32] Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. Post-procedure
[00:09:33] Speaker 2: you can use it. Yeah, and pre-procedure.
[00:09:35] Speaker 4: Pre.
[00:09:35] Speaker 3: What would you say? So
[00:09:36] Speaker 2: I would say I give it an eight. Um, I like it. I just don't like the way it smells. Mm. It's like bleach, but-
[00:09:41] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm ...
[00:09:42] Speaker 2: that's it.
[00:09:43] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:09:43] Speaker 2: But it's a nice, uh, product.
[00:09:45] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:09:46] Speaker 2: All right. So The Ordinary products in general
[00:09:52] Speaker 4: I'm split on them because There are a few select products, not any that I would rate a 10.
[00:10:00] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:10:01] Speaker 4: I would say maybe a s- a six.
[00:10:05] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:10:05] Speaker 4: Four or six.
[00:10:07] Speaker 2: I give it a four.
[00:10:08] Speaker 3: I'd say
[00:10:08] Speaker 2: five. And there are some products that are good and some that aren't that great.
[00:10:12] Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
[00:10:12] Speaker 2: Um-
[00:10:13] Speaker 3: Which ones do you like that are good?
[00:10:14] Speaker 2: I like the HA+BHA, um-
[00:10:16] Speaker 4: Oh. Really? That's the one I don't like.
[00:10:18] Speaker 2: Really?
[00:10:19] Speaker 4: Yeah. I feel like a lot of people have irritation from it.
Hmm. Hmm.
[00:10:21] Speaker 3: I like the azelaic acid and the niacinamide. Hmm. But again, niacinamide's- Niacinamide,
[00:10:24] Speaker 4: and I like the squalane moisturizer they have.
[00:10:27] Speaker 2: Hmm. Yeah. Um, very affordable.
[00:10:29] Speaker 4: That's what I was gonna say. I feel like they really st- what I appreciate about The Ordinary is that I do feel like they really entered the world of skincare and was like, "We're gonna make affordable products," you know?
[00:10:39] Speaker 3: Yeah, with good pro- like, ingredients.
[00:10:41] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
[00:10:42] Speaker 4: So.
[00:10:43] Speaker 2: Okay.
[00:10:43] Speaker 4: Yeah. Respect.
[00:10:44] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:10:45] Speaker 2: SkinCeutical C E Ferulic, the queen of all vitamin
[00:10:51] Speaker 4: Cs. Ha ha ha. Um, I'm gonna give a four. No, I'm sorry, that's... People are gonna come for me if I say four.
[00:11:00] Speaker 2: Hey.
[00:11:00] Speaker 4: But, I mean, I c- actually, I stand on it. Be bold. It's four.
[00:11:03] Speaker 3: I would say a six.
[00:11:07] Speaker 2: Yeah. I give it a five, and here's the reason. I mean, this was the first vitamin C- Mm-hmm ... serum that was stabilized- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm ... we saw great clinical results from. And, you know, it works for some patients. So older, drier patients- Mm-hmm ... I think that's great. Mature skin, does really well with it.
[00:11:28] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
[00:11:29] Speaker 2: But younger skin, more oily, um, I think it breaks out more patients than anything.
[00:11:35] Speaker 3: Hmm.
[00:11:35] Speaker 2: Um, and I hate the way that it smells.
[00:11:37] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[00:11:37] Speaker 3: I actually don't mind the smell. Oh. I know it smells. It smells like hot dogs- Mm-hmm Mm-hmm ... or hot dog juice.
[00:11:41] Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't love
[00:11:41] Speaker 3: it. But- Hot dog
[00:11:43] Speaker 2: juice. You know, like, if you buy,
[00:11:45] Speaker 4: like- Hot dog water.
[00:11:46] Speaker 5: Like-
[00:11:48] Speaker 4: Hot dog juice. Hot dog juice. Yeah. Makes me think they're, like, juicing dogs out there.
[00:11:52] Speaker 5: Hot dog water. Whatever.
[00:11:57] Speaker 4: Yeah. But you're, yeah, there's a smell. I think... I'm, I've alwa- I've said this, I'm a huge, um, PHD fan. Yeah. The L-ascorbic acid- Yeah Yeah ... I think is a little, um... can be irritating for some people. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:12:10] Speaker 2: And it's very expensive.
[00:12:12] Speaker 4: It, it's-
[00:12:12] Speaker 3: It's really, yeah ...
[00:12:14] Speaker 4: unreasonably in my opinion.
Yeah. Mm-hmm. I think if I'm gonna put the money, um, towards something, it's, it's not gonna be that product.
[00:12:21] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. Yeah. And you do have to be careful because it's in a dropper. You don't want to-
[00:12:25] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm ... um- I've spilled the dropper ... I spilled the dr- Yeah. I, I spilled a bottle.
[00:12:28] Speaker 4: $180 down the drain. I know.
Literally right in front of my face. I'm
[00:12:31] Speaker 3: like- But you also, I think you have to be careful not to just, like, pump a lot of air into it. Yeah.
[00:12:36] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[00:12:37] Speaker 3: Because you're Oxidizes. It'll go bad. It
[00:12:38] Speaker 4: oxidizes very quickly.
[00:12:39] Speaker 3: Yeah, it does. So-
[00:12:39] Speaker 4: And that's why I like an airless pump. Yeah.
[00:12:40] Speaker 3: Yeah. You'll notice it's clear- Yeah
when you buy it. It's yellow in, like, a week or two. Mm-hmm.
[00:12:45] Speaker 4: You, uh, on the Skincare Addict Reddit, people are constantly posting, "Is my CE, uh, expire," or, like, oxidized. And they're like, "I literally just bought it from this- doctor's office, like a month ago, but it's, I think it's just because- Mm-hmm ... you're opening and closing that bottle-
[00:12:59] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:13:00] Speaker 4: Mm-hmm ... so frequently. And the other thing is it's not very, like, what's the word? Like, accessible. Like, if you have arthritis in your ha- It's true. If you have psoriatic arthritis- Yeah ... or any kind of arthritis, when are you using it? In the morning. When are your joints the stiffest? In the morning. So you go to use your little...
And that thing locks up sometimes. It gets so tight, and you're, like, pushing down the- I, I
[00:13:23] Speaker 3: think that could be any product though. Yeah.
[00:13:25] Speaker 4: No, with the airless pumps, you just twist. You know? I love an airless pump. You just twist it. I do love
[00:13:30] Speaker 3: an airless pump. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:13:31] Speaker 4: But when you have those little droppers-
[00:13:33] Speaker 3: But they may have har- a hard time actually pumping too.
[00:13:36] Speaker 4: No, you use your palm.
[00:13:39] Speaker 3: Not if there's, like, a rim around it and you need to use a finger.
[00:13:43] Speaker 4: You use a mascara wand.
[00:13:45] Speaker 2: Oh my God.
[00:13:46] Speaker 3: All right. Okay. Anyways. Moving
[00:13:49] Speaker 2: on. Speaking of another expensive product, how about La Mer? Thoughts.
[00:13:55] Speaker 4: I'm still waiting on our-
[00:13:56] Speaker 3: I know, yeah ... free sh- I, I still have to try it. Yeah. So, I mean, I feel like my rating would be high, but I don't know.
[00:14:04] Speaker 4: I think given the evidence-
[00:14:07] Speaker 3: But is it really that... Like, why is it so expensive? I
[00:14:10] Speaker 2: think it's the bio-
[00:14:11] Speaker 4: The sea algae
[00:14:12] Speaker 2: or whatever they
[00:14:13] Speaker 4: bought.
[00:14:13] Speaker 2: Yeah Yeah. Bio algae. Um, so I don't know.
[00:14:16] Speaker 4: Off the cusp, I'll give it a five.
[00:14:21] Speaker 2: I will give it a two because- ... of how expensive it is. Yeah. It's very inaccessible. Yeah. And I don't think it does that much more than other- Right.
Right. But
[00:14:29] Speaker 4: are they trying to be accessible? That's the thing.
[00:14:31] Speaker 2: No, I think they're trying to be exclusive.
[00:14:33] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[00:14:34] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:14:35] Speaker 2: Yeah. And, you know.
[00:14:36] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:14:36] Speaker 2: Um, and that's maybe why they can charge $400 for, like, the cream.
[00:14:41] Speaker 3: And people may just think that it's this, like- Mm-hmm, the more
[00:14:44] Speaker 2: you pay ...
[00:14:44] Speaker 3: magic thing- Mm-hmm Yeah ... because of the price.
[00:14:46] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. So I think they're playing on psychology.
[00:14:49] Speaker 4: It's working.
[00:14:50] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:14:50] Speaker 3: It is, yeah.
[00:14:52] Speaker 2: All right. Next product, TNS Advanced Serum.
[00:14:57] Speaker 4: I'm gonna give a seven
[00:15:00] Speaker 3: Six.
[00:15:02] Speaker 2: Seven.
[00:15:03] Speaker 4: I think there are better growth factor serums. Um- This was the OG, though. This was... I was gonna say- Yeah. Yeah ... this was the OG. And now, I know you said, I, I didn't have the older version, but I know you said there was a smell with the older. Mm-hmm. Yeah. I think they've-
[00:15:17] Speaker 2: The new one doesn't
[00:15:18] Speaker 4: yeah, taken care of that.
[00:15:19] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
[00:15:20] Speaker 4: Um, it makes me feel better that there's a dual pump, so you have, like, your two products- Mm-hmm ... and you're pumping once and both of them are combining- Mm-hmm ... so that makes me feel like science-y. It's fresh.
[00:15:29] Speaker 3: Yeah,
[00:15:30] Speaker 4: like, yeah. Yeah,
[00:15:31] Speaker 3: like freshly mixed.
[00:15:33] Speaker 4: They put a lot of thought into this.
I like that. Yeah. But I do like the bio serum from Neocutis a lot more, um, than the TiNAs.
[00:15:42] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
[00:15:43] Speaker 2: Cool.
[00:15:43] Speaker 3: Yeah. I, I agree.
[00:15:44] Speaker 2: Yeah. All right. Next. CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser.
[00:15:49] Speaker 3: Three.
[00:15:49] Speaker 4: Really?
[00:15:51] Speaker 2: Two.
[00:15:51] Speaker 4: Really?
[00:15:53] Speaker 2: I do not like this cleanser. I was- Sorry, CeraVe.
[00:15:56] Speaker 4: I was gonna give it, like, a five. Like, not great, not awful.
[00:16:00] Speaker 2: I feel like it doesn't clean well-
[00:16:02] Speaker 3: Mm-mm
[00:16:02] Speaker 2: at all.
[00:16:03] Speaker 3: It leaves, like, a residue. Oh.
[00:16:04] Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
[00:16:04] Speaker 2: It doesn't feel good. It doesn't sud well.
[00:16:06] Speaker 3: I used to use it a ton.
[00:16:08] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[00:16:08] Speaker 3: Um, and, uh, if my patient is on it and they like it- Mm-hmm ... I'll keep them on it.
[00:16:13] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:16:14] Speaker 3: But I usually don't recommend it.
[00:16:18] Speaker 2: Yeah. The cream-to-foam one I like.
[00:16:20] Speaker 3: Yes. That
[00:16:21] Speaker 2: one I like. Yeah. But not this one.
[00:16:22] Speaker 3: Not the hydrating. The, uh, green and white, which actually both are, are green and white bottles. Mm-hmm. But...
[00:16:27] Speaker 2: Yeah. I just don't feel, like, a good cleanse after it.
[00:16:29] Speaker 3: No. Uh, you have to at least double cleanse- It's, like,
[00:16:32] Speaker 2: annoying ...
[00:16:32] Speaker 3: to get anything. Yeah. But yeah.
[00:16:34] Speaker 4: Yeah. I like the La Roche, um- Mm-hmm ... Toleriane cleanser.
[00:16:38] Speaker 2: Mm.
[00:16:38] Speaker 4: I think it's Toleriane. Yeah. But their gentle cleanser is nice.
[00:16:41] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
[00:16:41] Speaker 2: So.
[00:16:42] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:16:42] Speaker 2: Vanicream.
[00:16:43] Speaker 3: 10.
[00:16:43] Speaker 4: 10. I knew you were gonna say that.
[00:16:46] Speaker 3: I was gonna say, when we were- I might say nine, but ... talking about the CeraVe- Yeah ... that I usually recommend Vanicream, but I wanted to wait. But yeah, I love Vanicream.
[00:16:53] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:16:53] Speaker 3: Super gentle.
[00:16:53] Speaker 2: I give it a seven, and the reason why is I feel like although they're really gentle, some of the formulations aren't that elegant. Like, I don't really like the lotions and the creams.
[00:17:05] Speaker 4: Okay. If you're free of parabens, you're free of formaldehydes, they're, um... I just learned that they're free of lanolin. I think they're gluten-free too.
They're gluten-free. Um- 'Cause I eat
[00:17:16] Speaker 2: my s- I eat my moisturizers too.
[00:17:17] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:17:18] Speaker 4: You might. Um- I don't know what you're doing at your house, but I think, yeah, they're fragrance-free.
[00:17:25] Speaker 2: Yeah. I love, I love Vanicream for that. Is it- I just don't like it, the way that it feels ... the lotion? Like, I like CeraVe Moisturizing Cream so much better.
Here's
[00:17:32] Speaker 4: my thing.
[00:17:32] Speaker 2: Because
[00:17:33] Speaker 3: it's thicker?
[00:17:34] Speaker 2: It just feels better on my skin.
[00:17:36] Speaker 4: But if you
[00:17:38] Speaker 2: had- And it rubs in better. I just feel better ... limited
[00:17:40] Speaker 4: options-
[00:17:40] Speaker 2: Yeah ...
[00:17:42] Speaker 4: you're gonna be happy that you have the Vani- Vanicream. Oh,
[00:17:45] Speaker 2: yeah. Yeah. Not a problem. But
[00:17:46] Speaker 4: you're say- so you're saying this as- I'm just- ... a person who can use other things.
[00:17:51] Speaker 2: Yes.
[00:17:52] Speaker 4: I don't think people are jumping to use Vanicream.
[00:17:54] Speaker 2: Exactly. That's why. I mean, no, I mean, there's a lot of people who use Vanicream.
[00:17:58] Speaker 4: Maybe Heather.
[00:17:59] Speaker 3: I would jump to it.
[00:18:03] Speaker 2: All right, let's go on to, uh, Courtney's favorite, um, beef tallow.
[00:18:08] Speaker 4: Negative 100. Big fat zero. I just- I thought
[00:18:13] Speaker 3: it was one to 10. Yeah.
[00:18:14] Speaker 4: Okay, then I'll give it a one if I have to.
[00:18:16] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:18:17] Speaker 4: I'd rather give it a zero.
[00:18:18] Speaker 2: I give it a one.
[00:18:19] Speaker 3: Yeah, one.
[00:18:19] Speaker 2: Kind of grosses me out.
[00:18:21] Speaker 4: I just switched, um, and you'll know the patient, um, He- Heather has sent a patient to do a consult with me.
She brought all of her skincare products. She pulls out this thing- I know who you're talking about ... of beef tallow, and Heather tells her ahead of time, she's like, "Courtney's not gonna like it." When she's not gonna like it. And she comes in, and I can tell she's, she's taking out her stuff, and then she goes, "Then I have this."
And she's, like, so casual about it, and I'm like, "Yeah, no, we're gonna change that." I actually ended up putting her on our, um, Midnight Luxe cream. Oh, good. And sh- I gave her a sample. I said, "Try this instead of the beef tallow, and if you're not well moisturized, we'll figure something else out. But just try it."
Sure enough, she came back, uh, this week. She loved it. And she loved it and purchased it. So I was like, all right, phew.
[00:19:03] Speaker 2: Yeah, don't we know someone who makes it?
[00:19:06] Speaker 4: We know some-
[00:19:07] Speaker 2: Someone.
[00:19:07] Speaker 4: We know someone.
[00:19:09] Speaker 2: We won't mention names.
[00:19:10] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[00:19:11] Speaker 2: They make it in their kitchen.
[00:19:12] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:19:15] Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, first of all, it's just disgusting.
[00:19:17] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:19:17] Speaker 4: Okay? Emphasis on disgu- I'm disgusted. Disgusting. Nasty- ... losers use this. Because, I'm sorry, that was harsh, but it's true. Take a long look at yourself in the mirror if you're using beef tallow. Because number one, the beef industry, and I won't get into politics here- Mm-hmm ... but the beef industry is causing climate change so fast.
[00:19:37] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Don't get us started.
[00:19:39] Speaker 4: You know, don't get me started. So,
[00:19:42] Speaker 3: yeah. At least they're not throwing it away.
[00:19:44] Speaker 4: J- you know what I saw, and she, it popped up as a ad- ad on, um, Instagram, was pig ears.
[00:19:50] Speaker 2: Ew.
[00:19:50] Speaker 4: It's a dog treat, but I was like, at, part of me was like, "At least they're using the full pig."
That's gross.
[00:19:55] Speaker 3: Ugh. I, uh- I
[00:19:59] Speaker 2: think I just barfed.
[00:20:01] Speaker 3: I always, we always buy our dogs one of those.
[00:20:05] Speaker 4: The
[00:20:05] Speaker 3: pig ears? Not, not the pig ears. But, like, they g- their most recent treat, which they only do it, like, once every few months, was a rabbit foot with the fur and everything. Wait, I don't like that. They loved it. I don't know that I like- They loved
[00:20:18] Speaker 4: it.
I don't know that I like bunnies. The pigs, I'm like, people are eating pigs anyway, unfortunately.
[00:20:24] Speaker 3: They've had, like, cow trachea, beef to- What? Yeah.
[00:20:29] Speaker 4: I guess it's all the parts that people- It's all the
[00:20:31] Speaker 3: parts ... don't want. They try it. Oh.
[00:20:32] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[00:20:33] Speaker 3: Just sounds so gross. They love it. They love it. Mm. We've never done, like, bully sticks or, like, raw hide or anything.
They love this, and it cleans their teeth.
[00:20:40] Speaker 4: I give my cats freeze-dried shrimp. They like that.
[00:20:43] Speaker 2: Bougie.
[00:20:44] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[00:20:45] Speaker 2: Hm.
[00:20:45] Speaker 3: That sounds nice.
[00:20:46] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:20:47] Speaker 4: Do you ever think about eating one, like, a freeze-dried shrimp?
[00:20:50] Speaker 2: Hm. No. I, I know you- It's just shrimp ...
[00:20:51] Speaker 4: I- I kn- I
[00:20:52] Speaker 2: know you ate it. I've n- I've never I know you
[00:20:53] Speaker 4: did. I've, I-
[00:20:55] Speaker 2: I know
[00:20:55] Speaker 4: you- Hand on the Bible, I've never eaten a
[00:20:58] Speaker 2: freeze-dried
[00:20:58] Speaker 4: shrimp
bullshit. But I- Bullshit ... every time I feed them, I think about it. I do think about it, 'cause it's just shr- it's a freeze-dried shrimp, right?
[00:21:04] Speaker 2: You've eaten it.
[00:21:05] Speaker 4: No. But I will tell you if I ever do. I'll, I'll comment and I'll let everyone know. Guys, I ate the freeze-dried shrimp.
[00:21:12] Speaker 2: All right.
[00:21:12] Speaker 3: It's probably bland.
[00:21:14] Speaker 4: Yeah, it's probably crunchy and bland. Yeah.
[00:21:16] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[00:21:16] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[00:21:16] Speaker 2: Moving on. Uh, viewer nasal strips
[00:21:22] Speaker 3: I think two Uh, two. Yeah
[00:21:23] Speaker 2: Yeah. One.
[00:21:25] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:21:25] Speaker 2: I feel like when patients use these, they think that they're accomplishing a lot. Mm-hmm.
[00:21:31] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
[00:21:32] Speaker 2: But it's usually, like, just some dead skin cells- Mm-hmm ... some, like, oxidative, like, you know, filaments- Mm-hmm
sebum. It's not really doing much. The
[00:21:39] Speaker 4: videos are so misleading. That's
[00:21:41] Speaker 3: the problem. I was just thinking that. Oh, yeah. You can definitely look that up. I don't know if it's with, I don't know if it's with Biore. I don't wanna call them out if it isn't. Yeah. But, like, a lot of those videos- Mm-hmm ... where you strip, you pull the strip off, it's like they distorted or, like, blurred- Yeah, yeah, yeah
the background. Like, you can't even see their pores.
[00:21:55] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[00:21:56] Speaker 3: So it's like- Yeah ... it's obviously Photoshopped. Well, it's like
[00:21:58] Speaker 4: every individual blackhead- Oh, yeah ... or s-
[00:22:00] Speaker 3: Yeah ...
[00:22:00] Speaker 4: when it comes
[00:22:01] Speaker 3: out. It's like a little, like, attached. Yeah. Yeah. And then there's nothing on their skin. Yeah.
[00:22:03] Speaker 4: Yeah. And if you're using something like retinol or RetinA, and you use that- Mm
you can tear your skin. Oh, yeah. I've had patients that have done that, that-
[00:22:10] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah ...
[00:22:11] Speaker 4: you know, they're using their Tretinoin whatever, and they do a, a nose strip. And when they go to take it off, it's, like, given them- Yeah. Ugh ... like, yeah, a rash. I mean, I've
[00:22:17] Speaker 2: used them when I was a teenager, and never helped.
[00:22:20] Speaker 4: Mm.
[00:22:20] Speaker 2: Yeah. All right.
[00:22:21] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:22:22] Speaker 2: Slugging. What are our thoughts?
[00:22:28] Speaker 4: I'll give a three.
[00:22:32] Speaker 3: I'll give it a six.
[00:22:36] Speaker 2: Okay. I'll give it a four.
[00:22:39] Speaker 3: Okay.
[00:22:39] Speaker 2: All right. I- So thoughts. What is slugging, first of all?
[00:22:42] Speaker 3: So you're pretty much, like, basting in-
[00:22:47] Speaker 2: You're a glazed donut.
[00:22:48] Speaker 3: Yeah. Like a... Yes, like a very thick cream or ointment. Um, I think it's really good for, like, dry or irritated skin.
[00:22:58] Speaker 2: Mm.
[00:22:58] Speaker 3: Like, especially-
[00:23:00] Speaker 2: In the winter
[00:23:00] Speaker 3: slugging with the Cicaplast too- Mm ... I think is really nice.
[00:23:04] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[00:23:04] Speaker 3: But if you're, if you're acne prone- Mm ... it definitely depends on what product you're using.
[00:23:09] Speaker 4: What
[00:23:09] Speaker 3: is- A zinc... You could use a zinc diaper rash paste. Paste.
[00:23:13] Speaker 2: Damn, you'd be like a ghost.
[00:23:15] Speaker 4: Here... Is slugging also not a little inherently over consumption?
Because w- uh, do you... A- okay, let's a- let's ask the providers.
[00:23:25] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[00:23:25] Speaker 4: You apply a thick layer on your face. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Is all of that getting absorbed into your skin over time? No. No. No. So what's the point in applying this thick, like a cake layer to your face? That's my question. And then, and then at that point, when does it become just moisturizing?
Like, with the Cicaplast- Mm ... you're just moisturizing.
[00:23:44] Speaker 3: I guess it would be the same thing as doing, like, like a healing cream or balm- Mm ... and then putting a mask over it.
[00:23:52] Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. To do that.
[00:23:56] Speaker 3: But then you're cons- then you're consuming a mask. Then you... Yeah, then you have to throw away the mask. Is it compostable?
[00:24:00] Speaker 4: Depends on the mask.
[00:24:02] Speaker 3: Which masks are compostable? You two
[00:24:04] Speaker 2: are spicy today. I like it.
[00:24:07] Speaker 4: No, I think a mask will help the product, number one, get pushed in, and number two-
[00:24:12] Speaker 3: Yeah ...
[00:24:13] Speaker 4: you don't get the product on, you know, your- But then you
[00:24:15] Speaker 3: have to sit there, like- Yeah ... can't do anything. I have to-
[00:24:18] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[00:24:18] Speaker 2: I mean, I agree with Courtney.
I don't think you need to use a thick layer to get the benefits. No, I
[00:24:22] Speaker 3: agree. Yeah.
[00:24:22] Speaker 2: I just feel like it's more of a psychological thing. Like-
[00:24:25] Speaker 3: Yeah ...
[00:24:26] Speaker 2: the more you use, the better it's gonna work. It doesn't work like that. No. It just, like, sits on top of your skin.
[00:24:29] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:24:30] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. I agree. It's adhesive. Mm-hmm. It's literally like oil- Yeah
essentially just sitting there. So.
[00:24:36] Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
[00:24:37] Speaker 2: All right. And last but not least, sunscreen. 10.
[00:24:41] Speaker 4: 10
[00:24:42] Speaker 3: out of 10. 100. Hmm. Uh, no, 10.
[00:24:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, so sunscreen's a must. Our favorite always. You gotta protect your skin from the sun. Prevent skin cancer, um, you know, reduce photo aging, and just overall, I mean, it's just good for your skin.
[00:24:59] Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
[00:25:00] Speaker 2: So always sunscreen. Mm-hmm.
[00:25:02] Speaker 4: All right. Pop quiz. Favorite sunscreen?
[00:25:06] Speaker 3: Like brand or...
[00:25:07] Speaker 4: Like the specific- Hmm ... sunscreen.
[00:25:11] Speaker 3: Um-
Neutrogena Mineral Tint. Interesting. I'm still, I'm still a favorite.
[00:25:20] Speaker 4: More than the S- the Sai-
[00:25:21] Speaker 3: Yeah ... stick tint? I would say.
[00:25:23] Speaker 4: Okay.
[00:25:23] Speaker 3: I feel like it covers better.
[00:25:26] Speaker 4: Okay.
[00:25:26] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:25:27] Speaker 2: I really like TiZo.
[00:25:29] Speaker 3: I've never tried TiZo. It's
[00:25:30] Speaker 2: really nice, um, and very elegant formulation. Hon- that's what actually Amma uses 'cause she loves that sunscreen.
TiZo. And you know why they got that name? Titanium- Titanium zinc oxide? Zinc oxide. Oh. I thought
[00:25:44] Speaker 3: that was so clever. Is it tinted or untinted?
[00:25:46] Speaker 2: Both varieties. Oh. Yeah.
[00:25:48] Speaker 4: Both varieties.
[00:25:48] Speaker 2: Yes.
[00:25:49] Speaker 3: What's yours?
[00:25:50] Speaker 4: Um, yeah, I've been really into the Isdin, I'll say that. Mm-hmm. Um- Are
[00:25:54] Speaker 3: you doing the tinted or
[00:25:55] Speaker 4: untinted?
Untinted. To this day, yes, I've still yet to find a good tint. The miner- the Neutrogena's the closest one I've been able to find. Yeah. But I still struggle.
[00:26:06] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:26:07] Speaker 4: I'm like, yeah. I would love to find a tinted sunscreen that I love.
[00:26:13] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:26:13] Speaker 2: Mm.
[00:26:14] Speaker 3: That, the Neutrogena's the closest I've found. Mm. And I think the Sai is nice, but again, the more I- I've used it- Mm
the more I've found that it's not covering as well.
[00:26:23] Speaker 4: Okay. Yeah.
[00:26:23] Speaker 2: Our tinted sunscreen really works well for me.
[00:26:26] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[00:26:26] Speaker 4: It's a little too dark for me.
[00:26:27] Speaker 3: Yeah, me too.
[00:26:28] Speaker 2: Well, I'm darker than you.
[00:26:29] Speaker 4: Yeah, I know. I'm pasty. But yeah, I do recommend it for a lot of my patients if they have literally any more pigment than I do, so.
Yeah. Which is most, most people.
[00:26:42] Speaker 2: Well, this was fun. Um, we got to chat skincare ratings, um, and overall, like, what our favorites are and what we, you know, approve of and disapprove of.
