The State is a daily rundown of the headlines that matter to the East Lansing, MI community.
Hi, and welcome to the state podcast. I'm your host, Rebecca McVoy. Today's date is 10/09/2025. The forecast predicts that it'll be a chilly day with the high of being 61 and the low of being 38. The State Podcast is a daily podcast that brings you the stories that matter.
Speaker 1:Starting today off with greater community news. Lansing hosts the return of the Great Lakes Classic Foosball Tournament. From October, more than 200 players gathered for the Great Lakes Classic Foosball Championships. The tournament was organized by Foosball Clubs USA, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing the game of foosball into schools across the country for kids. Every dollar raised from the classic goes back into schools and wellness programs.
Speaker 1:Now moving on to on campus MSU news. Jewish students hold a vigil at The Rock for two year anniversary of Hamas attack. Around 50 students from various Jewish student organizations gathered on the rock on Sunday evening to commemorate the 48 hostages still in Hamas captivity who were taken on 10/07/2023, as well as the people killed during the attacks. The event was organized by Spartans for Israel, and Mesiuch Hallel and the Jewish Student Union, and the Chabad Jewish Student Center. Students repainted the rock in blue and white with the slogan Bring Them Home Now and a recreation of the Israeli flag.
Speaker 1:Organizers handed out LED candles, yellow ribbon pins, and Israeli flags ahead of community prayer for the Israeli Defense Forces and for the safe return of the hostages still in Gaza. For our third story of the day, safe dining at MSU, a look at the allergy program. In 02/2008, MSU Culinary Services began to implement signage at food stations, so students knew what was in each meal. This has now evolved into a specialized allergy program with a large team of nutritionists, dietitians, managers, and executive chefs who work around the clock to ensure each Spartan has access to various food options and any necessary support. A big responsibility within MSU's residential and hospitality services is running Thrive in Owen Hall, a dining hall that is free of the nine major allergens.
Speaker 1:To maintain this standard, Thrive follows strict policies to make sure each student feels comfortable while dining. And for our last story of the day, stalking, burglary, and hate crimes rise at MSU in 2024. According to the Michigan State University 2025 annual security and fire safety report, stalking, burglary, and hate crimes were all on the rise in 2024. The document released on September 30 details the university's crime reports for the 2024 calendar year. The report includes data such as reported stalking incidents across non campus buildings and campus residential facilities rose 90% from 2023 to 2024.
Speaker 1:Hate crimes nearly doubled in 2024. In twenty twenty three, six incidents were reported, mostly related to sexual orientation and ethnicity bias. In 2024, however, 11 hate crimes were reported, with the most involving sexual orientation and gender based intimidation.
