Josh Stively (00:00)
Welcome to another episode of the process of becoming podcast with Josh and my name is Dino Alright guys, so this is gonna be a little bit of a shorter episode I we go we've been at this for an hour and 15 minutes so far or 45 minutes. It's it's been an hour over an hour We've been trying to figure this out and we added a couple of new audio scenarios Upgraded the microphone and it's been just causing headaches for us on the audio end So it's actually funny because we have not changed much at all and it feels like
We are shooting our very first podcast with how bad this whole setup has been, but we're figuring it out. Yeah. Hey, you know, stay humble. Yeah. We don't know what the heck we're doing. What is this episode 14? I think so, dude. At least we're making progress. dude. How was your week, man? my God. so obviously I think you guys saw, but, summer smash. and me and Josh are talking about this, but dude, I'm still recovering. like this whole week I've been like just fog dude, workouts haven't been there. Try to eat.
Food hasn't been there like dude. I'm still catching up and it's crazy that Just what one week has done. I'm honestly like it was amazing time had a blast wouldn't change it for the world But I know you're also feeling it too dog. Like how's your week going? Yeah, my week's good and I think I'm just run down. Yeah, which is non -stop you get to a point and I explain this to some people like you go through seasons of life where You're burning the candle of both ends and in the middle
it really truly highlights the importance of taking time for yourself. Even if it's just 10 minutes of just detachment, right? So I feel that that's the reason I've been going, been able to keep going. But the other thing too is it's proof positive that like your central nervous system is what needs the break. You know, it's like people ask all the time from a workout standpoint, like, Hey, like how many recovery days do I need? Like, well, truly you don't actually need recovery days for your muscles. Your muscles will adapt. It's the central nervous system that needs a break, you know?
More the mental side of things. Yeah. So caffeinate and dominate. Yeah. It's actually funny because even just the last two weeks, obviously prepping for summer smash and everything, I've kind of fallen off on my regular routine and dude, even just two weeks of falling off it, like there's a difference. I'm into your point. I do think it's like just having that time of, you know, silence, being able to calm down your brain. Cause you're so on the go, go the whole time that I haven't done that. And it's like, you can even see just the impact it has off of two weeks, you know, and to your point, dude, it's like,
Never underestimate that 10 minutes of just silence or that moment for yourself because at the end of the day, it's like, we don't need to necessarily have a whole day to recover. You just need some time to let the brain relax. Right. Cause when you're constantly on the go, go, go dude, it never stops. So that's a great point.
All right, so we don't have a ton of time, but there is something that I want to hit on. And we guys, we came into this today. Our main objective was to not have a planned discussion. We're just going to kind of free roll with it. But something just kind of popped into my mind as we were talking through that. And I think it'd be value at least for like the next 10 minutes to kind of just walk through with our people. What rituals or routines do you have in your daily life that literally that you've created that have made the biggest impact in your life?
That's a great question for me, dude. I, and I know, and I, by the way, I don't think everyone needs to be that early morning person, but for me, that's what I found to work. Right. Cause so the hardest part for me was always trying to find the time to spend for myself. Right. Because as soon as I wake up, I've always been like, go, go, go. and the biggest impact and ritual that I've kind of started to do was I'll wake up an hour earlier than I normally would. And dude, I would spend time reading, meditate and visualize. Those were like my key pieces. And.
Obviously the reason I meditate is because it helps me go into my day without having so much on my brain and being able to essentially detach from things and just be able to be like, all right, cool. Let me look at this logically. Let me not let my mind take over. And for me, dude, again, meditation was one of the biggest pieces, but visualizing again, cause you kind of set the tone for the day, right? Like you're, you're, you're constantly having the goal and the vision of what you want to do at the forefront of your brain. Because if you don't constantly revisit it,
It's easy to lose sight of it. And then you go day by day, day to, you know, keep doing what you're doing. And then all of a sudden, three weeks go by and you're like, fuck dude, have I done anything? so for me, the visualization piece is a huge piece too, because it helps keep those sites sets for you. And then reading, obviously it sets a tone. It gives me like something to work on for the day or an objective. so for me, man, it's just waking up early, getting a lot of the things done for myself, because then there's no pressure of like, shit, I got to do this, this, this, and this. So for me, it's waking up an hour earlier than I normally would.
just to take time for myself. And I feel like you have a very similar routine and something we talked about, but kind of go through yours as well. Yeah. So my routine in the morning is very similar to that. And it's the same objective, but just to kind of like add a little bit to that, to Dino's point, like you got to do something for yourself. And where a lot of people experience burnout is number one is they don't have a purpose bigger than themselves. Right. So when you don't have a purpose that's bigger than yourself, you end up living everyone else's purpose. And it's something that TJ puts in his stories every day is pay yourself first. And you know,
And he makes the point that, hey, sometimes like I don't get that done in the morning, but I still pay myself at the end of the day, but it's paying himself first. And it's kind of a similar idea with money. So like, all right, well, you know, it's easy to spend money. Everybody's going to take your money. So you got to invest first. You got to make it automatic so you don't even miss that money. That's a whole different story. But so, yeah, for me, it's like if I don't do that during the day, literally for you and I both, like our entire day is pouring into other people from the frickin moment that I get in this building. And even sometimes before.
until literally the minute that I go to bed is pouring into other people. It's day after day after day after day, because even on weekends, it's pouring into the kids, pouring into the wife, it's pouring into other relationships they have. So another ritual that I have, because I do all the same things in the morning, I do add in a little bit of a cold shower. same. Same. Yeah. So I know you did. Huge. I'll do either a cold shower or something else that I've been doing. Just sometimes it's like easier and faster. I don't need to actually take a shower and waste that time. So I'll do like a face plunge. So I've taken a big salad bowl.
and I saw this on TikTok, but you take a big salad bowl, you fill it with like two inches of water and then you stick it in the freezer. So it's like just a chunk of ice. Well, you take it out in the morning, you fill it up with water and then you dip your face in there and hold it in as long as you can. And then just keep repeating that for a couple of minutes. And the idea there is it stimulates the vagus nerve similarly to how like cold therapy does. So I do that as well. Also to reduce some of the puffiness in the face for you ladies out there that care about that stuff. But for me, the biggest, it's probably actually more important.
based on the season that I'm in right now is I set myself up at the end of the day for the next day. So I'll kind of debrief my day where I'll go through like, hey, what was the best thing that happened today? And I have specific questions. I asked myself that you guys don't really need to know are here. But one of the biggest things that I put on there is what was the thing today that brought me the most joy? Right. Yeah. And the reason I have that question is I was in a meeting with a leader here a while back and they were a bunch of people were talking about joy and then they were like, gosh, what, what brings you joy in life? And I was like,
like moment of vulnerability. I'm like, bro, I don't remember the last time I felt joy. Yeah, bro. Like, yeah. So I was like, that's a great question, you know, because I'm an operator, you know, I just get in the mode and go. And I operate and I get shit done. But it's like stopping to enjoy it and auditing that. So it can be detrimental a lot of times, too. Yeah. Because how often times do we actually think back about like the things that we do well or go right? Right. Because oftentimes, it's just like, get in, go, go, go. Because that's what we have to do.
But if you do that constantly, then nothing ever matters. Right. And there's something you said too. It's like, if you don't have that purpose, man, you don't feel like you have the drive, you know, and it's kind of like an EKG. This is how I think about it. When you don't have a purpose, you're just kind of straight lining, streamlining. And if you look at it, you can do that means you're dead, dude. Right. And there's a, there's a quote that I heard and dude did a step with me forever. And it's, it's crazy, but it's like, if nothing matters, then everything matters. And when you think about that, it's like, when you don't have a clear cut goal, everything around you will.
Infiltrate your brain, right? You're gonna look at what other people are doing You're gonna look at what this person has going on You don't look at all your money compared to this person and you let all these things infiltrate from a negative standpoint But when you have this vision of what you want to do and this purpose all these things kind of get blindsided You're like nothing none of this matters. This is what matters, right? It's kind of like when you know, your family's the most important thing You know what you need to do to take care of them and that way you don't have all these other things infiltrating like should I go do this, you know, and I think that's what a lot of people struggle with like man like
you know, divorce and you know, obviously from a relationship standpoint or even losing sight of their own career is because they don't have that focus. So something I wanted to touch on. That's so huge. And the way I kind of look at that from a standpoint of exactly to your point, a similar analogy is like you're in a crowd and this is perfect with Summer Smash, but like picture yourself in a crowd of people. Everyone's having conversations, but you cannot tune into any of those conversations. All you're hearing is a bunch of chatter, right? And it's like,
when you have that kind of a thing going on, it's like you can't then focus on any one thing because you're focusing on so much. So having that purpose for me, it's like every day and the other thing that I do in the mornings is I'll set my intent for the day. It's not really a goal, right? It's not like I do that, but like, hey, these are the things I need to accomplish today, but I'll set my intent.
more like guidelines for you to follow. Yeah. And honestly, it's usually driven off of our core values. It's like, all right, my intent today is to be like super uplifting and positive so that I can make an impact in a relationship that I have, right? Build positive relationships. So, and like I'll hype myself up to get that type of energy. Sometimes, sometimes manufacturers, sometimes it comes naturally, but or I'll set the intent of like, I'm not going to let any negative thoughts escape my mouth because they come into my head, but I'm not going to do that. Something I'm working on right now. And TJ kind of pointed out, he's like,
you gotta slow down. Like I was like, well, my brain's going a million miles an hour and my voice then he's like, exactly. So slow your brain down, think through things and just do it. So that's something I'm working on as well right now. Dude, I actually, I love that you brought that up because it's actually a story that I made the other day. But oftentimes, man, we sit and complain about these little things in life and we never stop to like, hey, hold on, is this thought makes sense? Right? We just say, say, say.
And what we don't know is as you're saying, you're training your brain not to actually process and just continue to say, and guess what? Some days it's going to get you in trouble, right? And the constantly in con when you constantly do that, your brain takes over and that's where you go to the focus, right? Your focus is on the negative, you know? And I think it's an important piece, man. Sometimes just take a step back, right? Like the attach, look at what's actually going on. Is it really a big deal? You know, dude, I love that man. And I think I appreciate you being vulnerable on that, you know, cause it's like, dude, I think people think everything.
is perfect for all. It's like the outside looking in, right? my God, they got it all perfect. Got it all figured out. Dude, even the people that are teaching you about personal development business, I promise you they fuck up day to day. You know, they make mistakes, their schedule is off. Like, it's not perfect. But the thing is, is they adapt to that, right? They're like, missed it. And to your point, the debrief is huge, because that's how they get better. Yeah, you know, and nothing's ever perfect. So, you know, I think that's something we all struggle with, dude. Or if you don't think you struggle with it,
Pay attention to it because you're going to notice it a lot more. Right? Like what are you talking about? What kind of conversations are you having in your head and outside of your head too, like with other people, because it does impact how your day goes. So I love that man. That's huge. Something that TJ said the other day, he's actually said it to Sam. Sam was just in here, but he's like, it was that summer smashing Sam said something and TJ goes, if you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that. And Sam's like, yeah, good ass point.
But something we've been working on, just as from a leadership standpoint, is paying attention to what people say and understand that what they say is a reflection of how they think. And then literally to the point where being like, and people hate when you do this, but it's for their betterment, is literally breaking down every word they say. It's like, why'd you say that? And then they don't know why they said it. It's like, all right, well, we gotta change the way you think because clearly the way you think is causing you to say that. And if that's not what you think,
But you're telling me that's not how you think, but it is. Right. So our words, and even for you guys listening, like your words matter a lot and it is a, it's an echo of how you think. So it's the importance of reading 10 pages, getting on these podcasts and upgrading your thought process. But now the audit for you is how are my words reflective of what, where my brain is? Boom. I think that's the biggest piece to take away. It's think about what you're saying. How's it impact you and why are you saying those things? Dude? It's the why. If you ask yourself the why you'll come down to that barrier.
Right. Something I always used to say is like, I try, I try. And I remember Tim Grover saying this. It's like, try gives you a way to say, Hey, I'm, I haven't out. Right. But when you say I do my best or I'm doing my best, then it's like, dude, am I really doing this? Right. So it's like, dude, that wording is so huge and we don't think about it. So like enough, right. But when you take time to think about it, you can start to piece where those thoughts come from. And it's kind of like even the first episode we ever talked about, dude, it's understanding yourself, right. Understanding the mind, understanding the ego.
because a lot of that is in play subconsciously and we don't think about it often. Yeah, 100%. Go internal. Yeah, that's it, man. It's everything comes down to thought patterns, the words you use, and it's the whole idea of this podcast, the process becoming, right? You're never going to be perfect with this ever, right? No one ever will be to Dino's point about us. It's like we're always working on something. So guys, get into the habit of, if you don't have a morning routine, set yourself up for success because the last thing that I want to see,
As any of my friends that do listen to this and you're all friends, any of you guys just going through life like getting tossed around by the ocean. Thousand fucking percent. And that's what's happening. If you're not setting your day, if you're not starting your day for yourself, right, especially with kids, because like, no, my kids are important. Yes, they are. But you are. It's the oxygen mask theory. You got to take care of you. And how are you going to pour positive into them from the words you're using if your thought process is terrible because you didn't take care of yourself first?
thousand percent. Right. Second thing is start getting into a habit of auditing your day. I mean, it's literally been one of the best things that I've added to my routine to make that happen. And it's actually kind of funny. I found my old like very first journal before I ever found first form. No way. And it was like just the record notes from podcasts that I was taking. It was when I started my Betterment journey. It's 2018, March of 2018. And I found it like I wrote down these 13 principles that I want to teach my kids. And I'm like, dude,
It was interesting to me because, and I told some of my, the people that I mentor, I'm like, there were sparks of mindset that I have now that I hadn't had. Like they were there and I wrote things down, but I didn't implement them right away. So like, if you're on this journey, like, and you're like, man, I don't know if I'm ever going to get there guys. You just got to keep beating the pavement with it and know that whatever you put in is there. It's there. It takes time to do it. That's the piece that I think is hard. It's amazing. Cause we want to have it went like we want it to happen right away.
But I bet when it happened for you, it took a long time. And then when it hit, you're like, my God, this was it. It was, and it was cool because some of the things that I wrote down in those early days is still stuff that I teach. It's awesome, bro. And I'm like, dude, I didn't even realize how much it was sticking, right? Which is incredible. And it's made us who we are. Thousand percent, dude. I want to highlight one more thing. It's like, if you guys think about this, one of the biggest pieces, I think that stopped us as we think about time. But if you take a look back at all the time we've wasted, bro, months go by like that. Years go by like that. What?
does it take for you to give yourself 90 days of trying one or two things and like just staying consistent with it, right? And as Josh and Josh and I are talking about this, this doesn't mean go implement everything in one day and then try to continue to do it forever. It's like, dude, start with the one simplest thing and it could be, hey, meditation. It could be reading. Hey, if you're, if you already read, okay, then start meditating. If you already do those things and start visualizing, but add one thing at a time and kind of take time with it.
and then practice and practice and practice, but don't stop just because it's not perfect. That will, it dude, it's like me going out to a soccer field and just cause I can't kick the ball perfectly in one kick, I quit. Doesn't make sense. So just take your time with this. And that's the one thing I wanted to tell you guys is it does take time. So do not force it day by day. Right? That's the key. That just commit. That's it. Go all in. Not going to be perfect. And you probably going to skip some days, but just continue rocking and rolling execute.
Hall of Fame batting average is, what is it, 30 %? Yeah, 300. 300. So remember that. That means you can literally miss 70 % of the time and still be a fucking Hall of Fame. That's it. And same with my sales career before coming here. It's like, dude, I sold, I was around like 38 % close rate, which isn't phenomenal, but it's pretty average. It's above average actually. And I was extremely well off financially. Isn't that crazy? Right. 38%. Yeah. And for me, it's like, again, I said this on another podcast, but like,
I was wasting my time almost 60 % of the time, more than 60 % of the time. Imagine if you utilized all that time as efficiently as you could. 100%. I love that bro. All right guys, well I got to jump in and do a little bit of work here, but that was a quick episode that we wanted to be a lot longer. We are recording on one mic, so if we get into this situation again, we know the solution to it. Yep. And just be prepared guys, we will have a longer episode coming and we'll be continuing this a lot more. Obviously a couple of weeks has been a little rough, but...
We're back in it, so be expecting a lot more episodes. We're fucking pumped and we love you guys. Peace.
