The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1944. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15 in the year of our Lord, 2026.
Vox LIturgica:In 1944, Pope Pius XII promulgated the feast of the Immaculate Heart to be celebrated on the Octave Day of the Assumption. In 1950, after defining the dogma of the assumption, he changed the mass of the assumption from that which starts with the introit, let us all rejoice in the Lord, Gaudiumus Omnis, to that which starts with In heaven a great portent appeared. In the pre-nineteen fifty five series the propers during the octave are those used before 1944, that is before either of these changes.
Vox LIturgica:In the 1962 series, the propers follow the Missal as it stands. Of today's feast, Dom Prosper Garage writes the following. Today, the Virgin Mary ascended to heaven. Rejoice for she reigns with Christ forever. The church will close her chance on this glorious day with this sweet antiphon which resumes the object of the feast in the spirit in which it should be celebrated.
Vox LIturgica:No other solemnity breathes like this one at once triumph and peace. None better answers the enthusiasm of the many and the serenity of the souls consummated in love. Assuredly that was a great triumph when Our Lord rising by his own power from the tomb cast hell into dismay. But to our souls so abruptly drawn from the abyss of sorrows on Golgotha, The suddenness of the victory caused a sort of stupor to mingle with the joy of that greatest of days. Passion tide consecrated to the sufferings of the man god preceded by that day far too closely.
Vox LIturgica:And our hearts, still heaving with their own anguish in the sight of the mother's sorrows, needed time to recover the full liberty of their thrill of gladness. The greater was the confusion of death and sin and hell on that morning of the resurrection. The more reserved was the church's attitude in her expression of gladness. She seemed afraid of adding anything of her own to that which divine power had so mightily achieved. But today's festival has nothing of this character.
Vox LIturgica:It is a day of pure triumph and pure joy. Mary has left the earth and as she rises the whole church rises with her. The queen has entered into her kingdom and the servants of the queen cannot but share her joy. The angels rejoice. The apostles who have just closed her eyes rejoice.
Vox LIturgica:The whole heavenly court rejoices and we still on earth rejoice with them because our mother is crowned because the work of the redemption is completed in her because the first of the redeemed has entered body and soul into the glory that is prepared for all the elect. Let us then join our voices to the concert of heaven. Let us sing with the church the antiphon that will close this day's office. Today the Virgin Mary ascended to heaven. Rejoice for she reigns with Christ forever.
Vox LIturgica:In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit. Let us all rejoice in the Lord celebrating a festival day in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary for whose assumption the angels rejoice and give praise to the Son of God. My heart hath uttered a good word.
Vox LIturgica:I speak my works to the king. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Let us all rejoice in the Lord celebrating a festival day in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary for whose assumption the angels rejoice and give praise to the Son of God. The Collect, let us pray.
Vox LIturgica:Forgive, we beseech thee, O Lord, the sins of thy servants, and may we, who are unable to please thee by our deeds, be saved by the intercession of the mother of thy son, our Lord, who with thee liveth and reigneth in the unity of the Holy Ghost. God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the wisdom of Sirach. In all things I sought rest, and I shall abide in the inheritance of the Lord.
Vox LIturgica:Then the Creator of all things commanded, and He that made me rested in my tabernacle. And his command to me was that I should find my home in Jacob, throw in my lot with Israel, take root among his chosen race. And now I made Zion my stronghold, the holy city my resting place, Jerusalem my throne, my roots spread out among the people that enjoys his favor. My God has granted me a share in his own domain. Where his faithful servants are gathered, there I love to linger.
Vox LIturgica:I grew to my full stature as cedars grow in Lebanon, as cypress on Zion's Hill, as palm tree in the cades, or rose bush in Jericho, Fair as olive tree in the plain or as plain tree by the water side like cinnamon or scented balm I yield my perfume. My fragrance is like the choicest myrrh. The gradual, because of truth and meekness and justice, and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully. Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thy ear, for the King hath greatly desired thy beauty. Alleluia.
Vox LIturgica:Alleluia. Mary has been taken up into heaven. The angelic host rejoices. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke.
Vox LIturgica:In one of the villages Jesus entered during his journey at that time, A woman called Martha entertained him in her house. She had a sister called Mary and Mary took her place at the Lord's feet and listened to his words. Martha was distracted by waiting on many needs, so she came to his side and asked, Lord, art thou content that my sister should leave me to do the serving alone? Come, bid her help me. Jesus answered her, Martha, Martha, how many cares and troubles thou hast?
Vox LIturgica:But only one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen for herself the best part of all, that which shall never be taken away from her. The Offeratory. Mary hath been taken up into heaven. The angels rejoice, and blessing God, praise him with one voice. Alleluia.
Vox LIturgica:The secret. May the prayer of the mother of God come to the aid of thy people, O Lord. And although we know that she has passed from this life to fulfill the conditions of our mortality, nevertheless may we experience her intercession for us in the glory of heaven through the same Jesus Christ, thy son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The preface of Our Lady.
Vox LIturgica:It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, and that we should praise and bless and proclaim thee in the assumption of Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, who also conceived Thine only begotten Son by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost and the glory of her virginity still abiding, gave forth to the world the everlasting light, Jesus Christ, our Lord, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, The dominions worship it and the power stand in all. The heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the Blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat thee that thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with humble praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Vox LIturgica:Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Mary hath chosen for herself the best part, which shall not be taken from her for ever. The post communion.
Vox LIturgica:Let us pray. Having been made partakers of Thy heavenly banquet, we implore Thy mercy, O Lord our God, that we who celebrate the Assumption of the Mother of God may by her intercession be delivered from all the evils that threaten us through the same Jesus Christ, thy son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
Vox LIturgica:And Mary said, my soul magnifies the Lord. My spirit has found joy in God who is my savior because he has looked graciously upon the lowliness of his handmaid. Behold, from this day forward, all generations will count me blessed because he who is mighty, he whose name is holy, has wrought for me his wonders. He has mercy upon those who fear him from generation unto generation. He has done valiantly with the strength of his arm, driving the proud astray in the conceit of their hearts.
Vox LIturgica:He has put down the mighty from their seat and exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty handed. He has protected his servant Israel, keeping his merciful design in remembrance according to the promise which he made to our forefathers, Abraham, and his posterity forevermore. Amen.
