What is Commons Church Podcast?

Sermons from Commons Church. Intellectually honest. Spiritually passionate. Jesus at the centre. Since 2014.

Speaker 1:

Jump into things today. We do also have some exciting community information to let you know about. Scott is not here today. He's actually taking a quick break and camping with his family over the long weekend. But Scott joined our team in September with a mandate to help us prepare to launch a second parish here in the city.

Speaker 1:

Now, obviously, our community has grown quite substantially since we planted in 2014. We are now at four services every Sunday, and we are getting close to the limits of what we can handle here in this building in Kensington. However, we are still finding that there are more people all across this city that need to continue to explore this Jesus story in the intellectually honest, spiritually passionate way that keeps Jesus at the center of our focus. And so in the background, Scott has been learning about Commons. He has been finding his feet in how we speak about God here at Commons.

Speaker 1:

And he's also been working with a small team who had been laying the groundwork for a new parish in a new neighborhood next year. Well, we are finally getting close to signing a lease on a new meeting space. We have been focusing on the East Side of the downtown core. Things are not completely final yet, and they may still change before the fall. But it does look like by the fall, we will be ready to test the waters in the Inglewood community.

Speaker 1:

Now the plan is to expand that very small team that's been working in the background to now everyone who's interested in participating in something on the East Side of town. And we'll be looking to do that over the summer. And so if you're interested in that, please come and talk to us. But the plan is to begin preview services monthly in the fall so that we can work out some of the kinks and figure out if we can actually pull this off. And then in January 2018, we will go live with weekly services on the East Side of downtown.

Speaker 1:

Now that will be live in person teaching from our team. Scott is taking the lead, but the same faces you are familiar with here at Kensington, including myself, will be building out that team and rotating through. And if you haven't realized this, the original logo for Kensington Commons Church, that the one painted on the building as you walked in, is actually just the four corners of the communities that make up the larger Kensington area. And so that strange shape that we have put behind Inglewood Commons Church on the screen, that is simply us using that same idea again. Those are the four corners of Inglewood stylized into an abstract map.

Speaker 1:

And this is how we want to go about planting parish communities across the city. Finding neighborhoods where we think our voice and our presence will be welcome and needed, and then working really hard to incarnate the story of Jesus in a way that makes sense for our time and our place, but in particular for our neighborhood as well. And so if you live on the East Side of the city or if that's easier for you to access and you're interested in helping us start something new, then this moment is your invitation to get in touch with us, to join that expanded team that will be put together over the summer, and to be part of our next great adventure here at Commons.
