Lighter Than You Started is a daily podcast offering gentle reflections on the news, the noise, and the small human moments that shape our days. With wry humour and quiet honesty, it’s not about fixing you, just about ending each day feeling a little lighter than when it began.
Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter Than You Started. It's Tuesday and today I'd like to talk about Certainty or perhaps more accurately our search for it. It's remarkable how much of our thinking is devoted to trying to become certain. Certain we've made the right decision. Certain somebody understood what we meant.
Keith:Certain things will work out. Certain we aren't making a mistake. Our minds love certainty. It finds comfort in clear answers. It enjoys knowing where it stands.
Keith:It prefers a map to an unexplored path. There's something deeply human about that. After all uncertainty can feel uncomfortable. When we don't know what's going to happen the mind naturally starts looking for reassurance. It asks questions.
Keith:It weighs up possibilities. It searches for clues. It hopes that if it thinks about something long enough certainty will eventually appear. But have you ever noticed how rarely that happens? Often the more we search the more questions we discover.
Keith:The more possibilities emerge the more uncertain everything begins to feel. It's a little bit like standing in thick fog. You keep hoping that if you stare hard enough you'll suddenly see the whole landscape. Yet the fog doesn't disappear because you're looking harder. Sometimes the fog simply lifts when the time is right.
Keith:Tuesday has a quiet way of inviting this search. Monday has passed. The week is underway. There are decisions being made. Projects moving forward.
Keith:Conversations unfolding. And naturally we'd quite like to know how they're all going to turn out. But perhaps certainty isn't today's job. Perhaps today's job is simply to keep walking. Think about the people you admire most.
Keith:The people who appear calm in uncertain situations. It's easy to imagine that they always know exactly what they're doing. But perhaps that's not the case at all. Perhaps they've simply become comfortable taking the next step without needing to see the entire path. There's a quiet confidence in that.
Keith:Not confidence that everything will work perfectly but confidence that whatever happens they'll respond when that moment arrives. You already have evidence of that in your own life. Think back to challenges that you've already faced. There were moments when you didn't know how things would turn out and yet somehow you found your way through. Not because you had certainty but because you continued anyway.
Keith:You don't need to keep searching for certainty today. You don't need every question answered before you move forward. You don't need complete reassurance before taking the next step. Sometimes life only reveals the path after we've started walking. And perhaps that's enough.
Keith:So if today you notice yourself searching for absolute certainty perhaps gently ask yourself am I waiting for certainty Or am I already capable of taking the next step? Because often the next step is all life is asking of us. Today's thought for you. You don't need to keep searching for certainty. Thank you for sharing this moment and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started.
Keith:Go gently and I'll see you tomorrow on the flip side. You can now listen to the lighter than you started podcast on Alexa. Simply say, Alexa, play the lighter than you started podcast. Lighter than you started is a think of something publishing production.
