Squadify Connects

“Culture eats strategy for breakfast” is a well-known quote from management consultant Peter Drucker. You can have the best strategy and direction, but if your team aren't set up for success, it'll become really difficult to properly succeed. So this week's episode is focusing on our next condition for success: climate.

What is Squadify Connects?

Punchy, actionable insights and tips to make the life of the team leader a breeze.

[00:00:00] Pia: Culture eats strategy for breakfast is a well-known quote from management's consultant Peter Drucker. You can have the best strategy and direction, but if your team aren't set up for success, it'll become really difficult to properly succeed. So this week's episode is focusing on our next condition for success, climate. I'm Pia.

[00:00:20] Dan: And I'm Dan, and this is Squadify Connects.

[00:00:23] Yeah, it's difficult sometimes to influence the external conditions around us, like, you know, the restructures, slowdowns, economic headwinds, and so on. But what we can influence is the way our teams run and the shape of the dynamics within them to deal with those exact challenges.

[00:00:41] Pia: That's true, and we call this climate. And it's got two parts. The functional parts like systems, processes, and resources, and then the more behavioral parts like culture, psych safety and managing stakeholders.

[00:00:56] So one part is more how the team runs, and the other part is how the team behaves with each other, but they're both equally important as they're critical to creating success.

[00:01:07] Dan: We'll be spending a mini-series later in Squadify, Connects, focusing on psychological safety and also looking at managing stakeholders. But let's start with the basics and look at how you structure your weekly, monthly, and quarterly rhythms and routines.

[00:01:22] Pia: So let's start with how you use the time of your team because it sends an important message. It is a critical and finance resource. How often do you meet? Is it clear what the purpose of a meeting is? Is it tactical or do you have the opportunity to share learnings or troubleshoot or brainstorm? Can some of these meetings be done using a recorded video app for example, have a look at Marco Polo.

[00:01:51] Dan: Yeah, reviewing your meetings and thinking specifically about how well they work and what could be different is a first step of thinking about the climate in your team. Ask your team what they might like to change. It might show up in the climate results of your Squadify even, and remember with be, do, have, you have the power to influence how your team interacts and it can make a massive difference to them and to you.

[00:02:16] Pia: We'll deep dive into climate, look at Agile working and psych safety in future episodes in your Squadify Connects. But for now, take that important step of observing your team and thinking about these two conditions, and we'll talk about the third C, competence, next week.
