And here’s today’s news from Rail Technology Magazine in association with TransCity Rail – on Monday the 29th July 2024.

Network Rail has completed the delivery of two 42-metre beams ahead of a £22 million rebuilding project on a bridge over the M62.
The bridge, known as Castleton Bridge, carries 6% of the UK’s energy supply across the country, with 3000 freight services a year carrying material to and from Drax power station in Selby.
The 42-metre, 2000-tonne bridge will be constructed over two weekends in September, with the M62 set for its first-ever weekend-long closure to facilitate the project. The first stage will see engineers dismantle the old bridge, before installing the new one.

Hitachi Rail will begin 3D printing spare parts for its trains at its factories in Italy and the United States as it explores pioneering additive technology.
Hitachi Rail has partnered with ROBOZE to procure the technology, which will improve efficiency and delivery times of spare parts while lowering costs. It also represents a step towards greater sustainability and innovation in the transport industry.

The first major switches and crossings (S&C) renewal as part of the Southern Integrated Delivery (SID) has been completed.
The work, delivered by VolkerRail, took place over a series of weekend possessions in May and June across a 430-metre stretch of line at Hoo Junction, Rochester.
Across eight shifts, 56 panels (24 S&C panels and 32 plain line panels) were renewed along the two track line.
VolkerRail’s 125-tonne capacity Kirow 1200 crane helped to lift each unit into position, the heaviest of which was 37 tonnes.
