Most show families figure it out the hard way. They ask around, get partial answers, and fill in the rest on their own. Logan Newsom and Sam Silvers have been in the show industry long enough to have made most of those mistakes themselves — and they're sharing that wisdom with you.
Drench Line is a podcast about sheep, goats, and everything that comes with life in the show world. When to vaccinate. How to pick your animal. What to expect at your first major show. What nobody standing on the sidelines will actually tell you. New episodes drop twice a month, and they don't sugarcoat a thing.
Logan and Sam have been friends since they were teenagers working summers at a sheep ranch in Eden, Texas. Now they're both show dads raising their own families in world they grew up in. This show is their way of passing it on — not just to their kids, but to every family that's new to this and looking for someone to shoot straight.
Coming soon!
Drench Line is just getting started. Coming soon: voice memo questions answered on air, and guests who have genuinely shaped the show world — the breeders, stockmen, and industry figures whose names you already know. If there's someone you want to hear from, send your request to www.drenchline.com.
Be part of the conversation!
This show is built around the questions real families are asking. Got something you can't get a straight answer on? Submit your question at www.drenchline.com and it might just get answered on the next episode. Logan and Sam want to hear from you — that's not a throwaway line, it's the whole point.
Fall Prep Episode
===
Sam Silvers: [00:00:00] Fall show prep, validation, making sure we have all our stuff in, in gear for validation. We're double checking our, all our forms. We're double checking our tattoos.
Logan Newsom: Tattoos and TLBA.
Sam Silvers: TLBA tags.
Logan Newsom: I mean, the, the things that have to be double checked.
Sam Silvers: Yep. we're rough clipping every 30 to 45 days to see where we're at, right?
Sam Silvers: Making sure we got cocci out of 'em. worming protocols in shape. Them skinny ones we're, we're kinda pushing on them a little bit. Maybe them bigger sheep we're gonna start kinda putting them on ice as you like to say.
Logan Newsom: Yep.
Sam Silvers: CD and T boosters, not a bad idea.
Sam Silvers: Welcome back to The Drenchline. I'm Sam Silvers. I'm Logan Newsom. And we are live at the Gillespie County Fairgrounds right here by the racetrack. We've had, the Driven educational event going on all weekend, about to wrap it up here. and we thought this was a good time to talk about [00:01:00] fall show prep.
Sam Silvers: October 1 is hunting us down in a hurry, so we wanted to kinda come on and talk about what we're doing in the, in the fall show prep. But before we get into that, um, I just wanna say thanks to all of our sponsors that we have so far, and make sure to like, follow, share, subscribe. Check us out on all the social media platforms.
Sam Silvers: and if you are a, are a listener, weekly listener, monthly listener, we appreciate you for that, and keep tuning in. We're gonna try to keep making this entertaining.
Logan Newsom: Absolutely. the, the banter is, I think, what people come for.
Sam Silvers: Yeah, most definitely.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, not the- Are you feeling- ... educational purposes
Sam Silvers: Are you feeling kinda spry today?
Logan Newsom: Yeah. Heck yeah, man. I went to... I got Omar is, shout out, Finest Blades in the FB. That's where anytime I'm in Fredericksburg, I always go get lined up. Dudes take care of me.
Sam Silvers: So for, for those of you that don't know, Logan has to get lined up before every podcast episode, and we're usually waiting on him because he's in a barber shop somewhere getting lined up.
Logan Newsom: Dog, I gotta get lined up before I go to the grocery store. Like, that's just how it is. you wanna hear a funny story [00:02:00] about the Gillespie County Racetrack real quick- Let's- ... before we-
Sam Silvers: Yeah, let's do it ...
Logan Newsom: pour our knowledge onto these poor unsuspecting folks? So whenever, um, you know, they've always had the Gillespie County Fair-
Sam Silvers: Mm-hmm
Logan Newsom: for probably since the beginning of time. But the, the, the lamb jackpot down here kinda used to be one of the ones that, for our part of the world, Ballinger, Hill Country, West Texas, like that was kinda the ones that we would come down to. Like, you know, summer jackpot season, a lot of that was, you know, the early stuff, but that was kinda one of the ones, like your fall fairs, you might kinda get your spring set out or whatever.
Logan Newsom: Well, for some reason, Papa K decided to send me and Connor down here by ourself.
Sam Silvers: Oh, boy.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. Um, I had just started driving, and i- there were some other show families that were, that were with us, so it wasn't 100% just two children off in the wild. I mean, there were some, somewhat- Adults ... responsible adults.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. You know, I guess you could say. [00:03:00] A couple of them, I won't mention names. But, um, we had a really good Gillespie County Fair. I think Connor won the southdowns, maybe I won the crosses, won the blacks, won the show. Gillespie County Fair was notorious for paying in cash. It was kinda like the West Texas Fair back in the day.
Logan Newsom: Like, you went to the, you know, the, the ticket counter or whatever, and, you know, you cashed in your vouchers. So he sent us down here with enough money, I guess, to probably have fuel and, you know, maybe buy a sandwich along the way and, and, and pay our entries. And by the time it was done, we had $2,400 that we had won.
Logan Newsom: We decide to come to the horse races with these supposedly responsible adults that were supposed to be, you know, watching over us. And the wild part was we had a really good run there for about, I don't know, I would say four or five races, won a little money, kind of, kind of, kind of added to the pot a little bit When we got back to Ballinger [00:04:00] the next day, we had $350 to our name.
Logan Newsom: And we never told him that story for a long time, and, you know, he, he knew how we had done. He's like, "Man." I was like, "Yeah, you know, we, shoot, we- ... we came out pretty solid. Like, we got our entry money back." They just didn't
Sam Silvers: pay as good
Logan Newsom: this year. It just wasn't as good that, th- you know, this year.
Sam Silvers: Donors might've been down.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, them, uh, we didn't box enough trifectas or something. Yeah. But yeah, we, uh- The,
Sam Silvers: the Germans got a little tight this year.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, the German, they, they, they, they saw us coming. But yeah, we, uh, we sat here, there at the ticket window, and we thought we were, we thought we were in high cotton there for a little while.
Logan Newsom: So that's always the story that I reminisce about whenever I'm, whenever I'm in these grandstands.
Sam Silvers: You bet. Fredericksburg's always a good place to have some fun, no matter the age.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. So where we at? October 1's coming up. Yep. We got state fair coming up.
Sam Silvers: Next
Logan Newsom: week. Um, yeah, we're, we're in the thralls of it.
Logan Newsom: Obviously, you know, listeners that are in the Midwest or out West or whatever, I guess, you know, kinda might be wrapping up some of their state fair season. But for us, you know, we're, [00:05:00] we're just now kinda getting, getting to that point. But we've got Kansas City coming up. We got Louisville coming up.
Logan Newsom: You know, we have- Yep ... a lot of stuff that we have as far as Heart of Texas there in Waco and, you know, we went to the West Texas Fair there a couple weeks ago in Abilene on Permian Basin. Like, it's just kinda one of those times that maybe guys have, have been jackpotting some. But it always feels like when the weather starts to maybe slightly break a little bit, we're not quite as hot, seems like that's whenever a lot of our customers start to kinda maybe get sheep out a little bit more.
Logan Newsom: Maybe they've hit one jackpot or two, but it's like- Yeah ... "All right, hey, let's, let's kinda see where we're at."
Sam Silvers: We, we had that conversation as a family the other day. W- we didn't jackpot much this summer just 'cause it was so dang hot, and, uh-
Logan Newsom: And you played golf- Well,
Sam Silvers: I did- ...
Logan Newsom: 9,000 times ...
Sam Silvers: I did play a little g- a little golf.
Sam Silvers: but we had the conversation that, you know, state fair's over, fall's coming. We need to hit some of these fall shows. yeah, we gotta get them out. Weather's cooling off. No reason not to. validation's coming up, you know, into this month. Uh, every [00:06:00] county's a little different, but, um-
Logan Newsom: End of October ...
Sam Silvers: end of October.
Sam Silvers: Y- you know, every county's a little different on, uh, what dates they set, but, um, you know, make sure you read the rules on that. Make sure you got all your stuff ordered, tag ordered. If you did, I wanna caution our listeners, and they're showing in the State of Texas, if they did validate for state fair, um, and they're going to state fair or they're just gonna not revalidate, uh, to check those tattoos, 'cause they, they are kicking a lot of kids out for-
Logan Newsom: Check your tattoos
Sam Silvers: illegible tattoos.
Logan Newsom: Make sure you have your TLBA tags-
Sam Silvers: Yes ...
Logan Newsom: in, and more than anything, wrote down on paper. Yeah. Unfortunately, that's, you know, a, an issue every year that have to kinda deal with at, at Angelo. Um, if for some reason Mistakes happen, but it's something that... And you know, I'll, I guess little, little shout out to the validation guys.
Logan Newsom: I mean, those... I know we get it, so I'll assume it comes to everybody, but Andy, our county agent, will send us, you know, "Hey, [00:07:00] here's the, what all your paperwork looks like after it's been submitted." Sure. So we'll go through and make sure, you know, hey, everything looks right. That
Sam Silvers: looks good. Read, reread, double check.
Sam Silvers: Mm-hmm. It, it's, it's on you. Don't, don't put it all on the county agent or the ag teacher. Um- Yep, yep ... make sure you as the parent and the exhibitor read and reread and everything's on the form that needs to be on the form before you, you sign your life away on that and turn it in.
Logan Newsom: Yep,
Sam Silvers: absolutely. So just a little caution.
Logan Newsom: Yep.
Sam Silvers: No going back. Um, but let's get in- let's get into the, the sheep themselves. W- what are we, what are we doing right now? I mean, like, what's going on at Newsom Livestock? What's going on at my house? Like, where are we at in the feeding program? W- what's our daily routines looking like? What are we trying to gear for and do?
Logan Newsom: I think more than anything right now where I feel like we're probably at is, you know, we've kinda started to kinda hone in on those ones that we're gonna, we're gonna kinda make our push with through the spring. You know, if it looks like we're... I'm notorious for buying too many, having some extra ones, uh, putting too many on feed, and then, you know, at some point we kinda get into that September, October deal and I'm like, "Okay, hey, [00:08:00] that one's, that one's maybe not gonna work for us for whatever the reason is," you know?
Logan Newsom: And Graham's big and tall now, and Joe's kinda doing the crosses, so you know, we kinda have to say, "Okay, hey, that looks like a really, really good light weight," so I mean, you know, we might let one of our other f- feeders or families have that one. So we're kinda, we're kinda honing in- Yeah ... you know, maybe on those ones that we're kinda ready to, you know, obviously- Making, making
Sam Silvers: some cuts.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, making some cuts, kinda getting those ones that, you know, we know are gonna kinda get tagged in and nominated or whatever. But I think one thing that, you know, we're probably always Very conscious of or, or what we try to do, you know, as we kinda get into the fall is weather's starting to change.
Logan Newsom: We've been showing some, you know, we're kinda trying to figure out where everything's at, but we're getting into our regimen, like the daily stuff instead of it being a point where, you know, kind of in the, in the summer when we had plenty of help around and kids were out of school and it's like, "Hey, let's do 20 sets of legs today."
Logan Newsom: That's not reality-
Sam Silvers: Yeah ...
Logan Newsom: as we're getting [00:09:00] into the fall. So it's, it's get- starting to get a little more of, hey, on Monday, Tuesday, this is kinda what we're doing. Kids are swamped with church activities and school and everything on Wednesday, so Wednesday's always a day that we just don't, we don't get a whole lot done in the barn.
Logan Newsom: and then, you know, like everybody, kids are busy. Thursday we have junior high football, and, for folks that are listening that don't know, Graham's the, the super water boy for the varsity team, so you know-
Sam Silvers: Yeah, a
Logan Newsom: lot going on ... I mean, yeah, we got a lot. We gotta get high-quality H2O and make sure that's taken care of.
Logan Newsom: So, you know, we're starting to kind of try to figure out, okay, these are the days that we can get some extra stuff done. These are the days we can do legs and treadmill. These are the days that we're gonna track. These are the days we can get sheep in the yard. You know, we spend a lot of time on the weekends.
Logan Newsom: We spend a lot of time on Sunday afternoons where it's like, "Hey, it's hand walking. Let's get those things in the yard", you know? and it also, as you start to kind of, kind of dial in to those ones and those animals that you know you're gonna kinda nominate, it starts to become a little easier. Yeah.
Logan Newsom: They start to jump on the stand a little more. You know, their halter broke. They've been shown. They know whenever you put [00:10:00] leg wraps on, they're not gonna jump and dance around, you know? So it's a lot of that, but I feel like it's our routine. Yeah. And that's what we're trying to kinda tie into and finalize and get comfortable with on when everybody's gonna be there, what all we can get done.
Sam Silvers: Yeah. Hon- honing down, just kind of focusing in more on it. a- and I think being a little more rigid in your schedule and-
Logan Newsom: For sure ...
Sam Silvers: a- and, and all that. health concerns this time of year, what are we, what are we watching for? obviously, you know, we've been on, we've been battling a little fungus at the house this year.
Sam Silvers: Had, you know, had some hell. I... You know, it happens. I Been in it 40, 40 years now, and I don't have it all figured out. We got a little bout of fungus in there and had hell getting it killed. but you know, that's something that I think we still need to be watching out for right now is, is, is the fungus issue.
Sam Silvers: And you know, it doesn't matter who you are or how many years you got in the game, it's- It'll get you ... gonna still hit you.
Logan Newsom: Absolutely. Yeah, um, you know, we, we've been fortunate this year so far we haven't had, you know, the bout with fungus, but we've had, we've had those [00:11:00] summers before where, you know, we definitely, definitely fight it and, and it's a frustrating deal.
Logan Newsom: I think from a health standpoint, I think you can kind of split it into maybe a couple of different areas. I feel like us personally, we either have sheep that are in great shape, they're on the track, they're on the treadmill, they didn't have a bad summer, they're rocking and rolling. I like where we're at.
Logan Newsom: You know, so for them it's more a lot of preventative maintenance or daily maintenance. You know, we're trying to keep those things clean from a external parasite. We're on a good regiment with Dectomax or Ivomec or whatever we're doing. Um, we're prolating legs, you know, a- as kind of needed. Um, obviously some, some stuff on the internal side of it, deworming.
Sam Silvers: Maybe a CD and T booster again.
Logan Newsom: A CD and T booster in the fall. You know, a lot of, a lot of preventative, but you know, what I would call kind of our basic maintenance, and those are the ones that I feel like they're eating well, they're generating. Mm-hmm. Like I said, if they're to the point that they're already, you know, getting exercised a few days a week, like things are, [00:12:00] things are thriving.
Logan Newsom: Feel good about it. On the other side of that, and I don't care who you are, I had a conversation with, you know, some guys earlier and they're like, "Man, three or four of these things are rocking and rolling, and then we got a couple of these things that just, they're just not."
Sam Silvers: Skinny.
Logan Newsom: They're skinny. I, I- We've had a, we've had a hard summer.
Logan Newsom: It's been hot, it's been dry.
Sam Silvers: Yeah.
Logan Newsom: Um, and everybody has those.
Sam Silvers: Sure. And, and not to, not to cut you off, but this, this morning, you know, I made an announcement here at Driven, if you want me to look at your sheep, you know, meet up at the ring, and I probably looked at, I, I would venture to say close to probably 200 lambs this morning.
Sam Silvers: And a lot of those were skinny. Yeah. I mean, they were just... They were behind, and I think now's the time that we, we need to start pushing a little bit if they're behind because you're gonna, you're gonna get too far behind.
Logan Newsom: Well, and you, you're, you're... You can, but it's also, you know, if we can get... And we're starting to.
Logan Newsom: I mean, this is a great example. I mean, we're in Fredericksburg. It's September. Like, it's, it's warm, but it's nice. Nice. It's breezy. Yeah. Uh, you know, there was some cloud cover a little bit earlier this morning, yesterday. So we're [00:13:00] starting to get a little bit of break for us down here, and guys that are listening, I mean, Texas summer's been brutal this summer.
Logan Newsom: Brutal. Triple digits, all the stuff, hot. You know, guys down south may be fighting a little more humidity, whatever. But even for us in, in the Panhandle where we're normally... We can... I've always felt like kinda can be a little bit ahead of a lot of guys because we do cool off at night. It's been hot for us.
Logan Newsom: And so, you know, if you don't have those sheep that are just rocking and rolling, blowing and going, and life's good, and you do have some of those that are a little skinny and a little further behind, it is an opportunity as that weather starts to change. You can, you can kinda ca- you can kinda catch up.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. Like I was saying, if you can catch them and you can get some stuff going, you can figure out what's kinda been lingering and maybe holding them back, whether that's a cocci deal, whether it's some internal stuff that's... That they're fighting, you know- Or just a respiratory- ... E. coli, Salmonella- ... that dry cough deal
Logan Newsom: Jurahee. Yeah, respiratory. Whatever it is, if you can get them cleaned out and you can get them rolling, man, they'll catch up. Like, they can, they can... A lot of things can happen [00:14:00] in, you know, uh, through the fall. I think a big mistake that a lot of people make, and I'll be honest, I saw some folks, you know, at, at, at camp, and, and we talked about it.
Logan Newsom: Uh, you talked about it whenever you were doing the, the maybe the show prep or the leg fitting deal You gotta rough shear these things.
Sam Silvers: Yes.
Logan Newsom: Those sheep that have two and three inches of wool on them, and they're sitting there in 105 degree... I don't care if you have seven Port-A-Coolers on that pen, it's not gonna be good.
Logan Newsom: It's- Well, and then- It, it's not gonna be a thriving environment ...
Sam Silvers: we've gotta think about other things, too. You know, not just the heat, but you're probably gonna have a wool picker in there. Absolutely. He's gonna be picking wool off them things. Um, y- then you're gonna have those black, you know, teeth marks all over them from wool picking.
Sam Silvers: That just looks terrible. a- again, we had one earlier this year do that, so I mean, there's a lot of advantages to rough clipping, you know, checking for fungus, checking condition, making sure you have a wool picker, helping them grow, helping them convert faster, all those things.
Logan Newsom: All the stuff. I mean, it's a, it's a great way.
Logan Newsom: We try to always [00:15:00] do it, you know, y- you kinda mentioned that 35 to 45 days, that's exactly where we're at. If those sheep haven't been to a show, one afternoon, if I feel like they're getting a little bit long, we'll hop them up. You know, you can buy those rough shears on Amazon for about 80 bucks, and they come with two sets of blades.
Logan Newsom: Like, it's the best deal in town, but we'll hop up... We'll hop those things up, and in five minutes, you know, we'll just knock the wool off and kinda see where they're at, and it seems like those things can kinda catch a gear. They kinda feel maybe a little refreshed or whatever that looks like. But that's something that I- I've kinda been on, you know, some of our crew, and again, you know, everybody gets busy and whatever, but I noticed it a little bit, too, with some families that it's just like, "Hey, we got...
Logan Newsom: We... That's one thing we gotta, we gotta do a better job of."
Sam Silvers: Yeah. Um, you know, now's the time that, you know, if we're gonna feed a melatonin product, we're probably starting on that, you know? Like, uh, y- you know, whatever melatonin product you wanna choose, um, Fro something like that, you know, that, that's a good one.
Sam Silvers: Um, but now's the time I'd say to start introducing some of those melatonin products, um, making sure your, your, your legs are wrapped and you're staying on that management there. [00:16:00] Your treadmill and tracking, like you said, is honed in. It's, it's pretty rigid. Uh, muzzles on those sheep that need muzzles, I would say.
Sam Silvers: Sure. You know, we don't muzzle everything at our house, but definitely this is about the time that I will start muzzling all those Southdown, stuff like that, or maybe some... just some big-bellied blacks that aren't just looking kinda wasty.
Logan Newsom: Shout out Muzzle Co.
Sam Silvers: Shout out Muzzle Co.
Logan Newsom: Hit Madden up. Hit him up.
Logan Newsom: Get your hard muzzles for those things.
Sam Silvers: And those sheep that are behind, you know, they probably need to be on some of that Honor 15 DX. That'll really get them going. Shout out to
Logan Newsom: Purina. Check or order. There you go. Look at that. Look how, look how good we're getting at doing all that. I'm, I'm curious, what is, uh...
Logan Newsom: what is kinda your rule of thumb on hard muzzle and those things? You kinda said, you know, those Southdowns, I'm assuming because, you know, those things typically have a chance to get a little chubby. Yeah. And so you're... might be limiting their feed or, you know, not, not having access, you know, to the full buffet.
Logan Newsom: Um, you know, the last thing we want is to have, you know, a, a Southdown with six-tenths of fat show up at a show. But how do you... What's your kinda your rule of thumb on [00:17:00] that deal as far as when you start to hard muzzle those sheep?
Sam Silvers: I think, y- you know, I think it's easy to say when we start individually feeding you can do that, but we individ- we individually feed pretty early in the year.
Sam Silvers: I would say when I start restricting their diet- Yeah ... pretty much. You know, and it, like, like the down pen, we pulled them back from, from a pound of feed and a quarter Starglo to three-quarters of a pound of feed and a quarter Starglo. So we're restricting their diet. I can tell that they're hungry, they're banging the feeders.
Sam Silvers: That's when I know I probably need to start muzzling these guys because they're gonna pick dirt all day, they're gonna chew on stuff. I might, y- you know, uh, some of our grass hay is in really, really good shape, and you, if you feed them too much of it, you can definitely get them fat on it too. Oh,
Logan Newsom: yeah. No, it's-
Sam Silvers: So-
Logan Newsom: Yeah, if it's a nutritionally-
Sam Silvers: I'm not saying we, we cut it out- Yeah
Sam Silvers: but we might start restricting the hay a little bit. Yeah. Maybe going to every other day or something like that. Um, and again, that's just on Southdowns 'cause they get fat on air, but that's, right or wrong, that's how we do it. Um, [00:18:00] blacks, you know, if there's some, if there's some medium wools or something in there that we're restricting on or maybe they just have that big old kind of wasty belly, you know, it doesn't look athletic is, I think is a good term, then we'll definitely start muzzling them just so they can't pick dirt and get all that stuff in their gut.
Logan Newsom: We've, you know, we've talked about this before, like we feed on shavings, so ours is a little bit different but similar situation. You know, we'll hard muzzle those things as we kind of, you know, maybe are backing up diets a little bit or, or even those ones that, you know, like you talk about on Southdowns, but I think we also get to that point whether you're feeding...
Logan Newsom: You know, if you're feeding one of those, you know, few show quality, high quality show feed brands, and I, I mean, I, in my opinion, there's, you know, a couple of them that I would consider nutritionally dense and high enough quality to kind of fit in this category. You know, where you can maintain those things on that three-quarters of a pound or, you know- Yeah
Logan Newsom: maybe a pound or whatever that looks like. Even for that, you know, when you start thinking about those 140, 150, 160 pound blacks You're not feeding them a lot. You're just kind of in cruise control. Like we call it putting them [00:19:00] on ice, you know? And sometimes it seems like we'll get those sheep, we'll maybe go to the fall fair, you know, in October and have some success, and I'm like, "Hey, that thing looks good, but we just need to kind of cruise him."
Logan Newsom: And for us, where we're feeding on shavings, you know, naturally those sheep, they'll wanna kind of eat those shavings. Like, even whenever they have, you know, full hay and, you know, they're on a pound of feed and, you know, some filler product, whatever, they're still maybe just a little bit hungry 'cause we're just kind of in, we're kind of in maintenance mode.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. So we'll kind of jump in there, and that's a lot of times whenever we'll start with those hard muzzles and, and doing that.
Sam Silvers: So I wanted to kind of circle back a little bit when we were talking about the skinny sheep and really ramping them up in this cooler weather. Y- you know, they're gonna make some leaps and bounds in this cooler weather.
Sam Silvers: But I, you know, I wanted to look at the other side of the coin, too, and, and caution some people to, to realize that, you know, when this cooler weather hits, you may have to look and start shutting some of those down 'cause they're gonna make... Some of those will make big jumps- Big jumps ... big leaps, and gain 15, 20, 25 pounds in a month, something like that.
Logan Newsom: What was it last year that you had that sheep that gained all [00:20:00] that weight in, like, one month? Was that last year that-
Sam Silvers: It was this... That was this year in July.
Logan Newsom: I remember you saying
Sam Silvers: 20, 27 pounds- Yeah ... in, like, 24 days.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. Yeah. When those things catch a gear, and especially if there's been something that's maybe drawn on them- Yeah
Logan Newsom: that's pulling on them, whether it's some low-grade cocci, whether it's some respiratory stuff, whatever that looks like, something that has kept those things from really just, you know, jumping through themself, and then all of a sudden you get it right, and then it's like, boom, they're gonna have a whole lot of compensatory gain and make up for lost time.
Sam Silvers: And I know, I know, like, y- we've joked about this a couple times on the podcast. You give me a hard time for... You've seen my board at, at my barn. You know, we weigh- Oh, it
Logan Newsom: is so intense, guys ... we
Sam Silvers: weigh a
Logan Newsom: lot. You have no idea. Like, the only thing that's missing is if s- which I'm sure it's on there somewhere, it probably just has a different name.
Logan Newsom: I know Sam weighs himself also. Like Everything is weighed there
Sam Silvers: I haven't in a while. I know I've gained some weight, but I haven't in a while. Back to the story here. But what we can do is, you know, like you've seen our barns, you know, we're, we're typically a, [00:21:00] we're, we're a bigger open air barn. We're not inside, we're not AC'd, none of that stuff.
Sam Silvers: But you can see it e- every year I kinda track it in, into September, October, November, when the weather really starts cooling off and that barn gets cool, that's when all my sheep make big jumps in weights.
Logan Newsom: Yeah.
Sam Silvers: A- and so we... I know that this time of year I'm gonna have to start, okay, focusing on this 'cause some of these might get outta hand on me, and I've, I've had that problem.
Sam Silvers: Sure. I'm, I'm not perfect. I've had some sheep i- in the past few years that, you know, we look up and we're fighting the max weight at San Anton or something like that, you know. I mean, they'll get up on you quick.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, and I think that's probably for guys listening, it's gonna vary, you know, one, like what you said, barn size, space, air quality, you know, just kinda how those animals will, will respond in each one of their environments.
Logan Newsom: But climate is such a big deal. Y'all are gonna catch all of this, what I call kinda the open fall. Like, it's gonna cool off, it's gonna be nice, you know, days aren't gonna be as hot, [00:22:00] evenings are gonna start to cool down. Y'all are gonna get these mass jumps. For us, north of Lubbock, we're gonna catch a little bit of that-
Sam Silvers: But it's, it's like whammo
Logan Newsom: but, but at some point when it starts getting cold- It's cold ... like, we're done. Like, they're, they're done. Like, they're gonna stop. So we're, like, always, like, we're pushing and we're like, a lot of times, and even, you know, and I think it sometimes comes to bite us a little bit, like, we'll have some of those spring sheep that are in the heavyweight class at some jackpot, you know, and they look like a little junior high boy out there trying to play on the varsity team.
Logan Newsom: But weight-wise, they're up there, but they've just kinda, like, gained through the summer, and then all of a sudden when it does start to cool down, you know, then they'll stop and, you know, kinda start to mature- Yeah ... or whatever that looks like. But yeah, it's gonna be very climate dependent. If you guys that are listening don't think that, you know, if you're down south or whatever and you're still kind of fighting it.
Logan Newsom: Like at some point I always kind of joke with Dustin Sioux Fall, he's over there, you know, in far East Texas as far as I'm concerned. But you know, those guys, November, December, January, the strides that they can make because- Yeah ... they finally, [00:23:00] some of the, the humidity, you know, leaves and weather gets relatively nice and you don't sweat quite as bad whenever you jump outta the shower and those sheep really kind of- Man
Logan Newsom: kind of start to respond a little bit.
Sam Silvers: Every time I've been to Ruidoso I always thought, man, I, I would love to have me like just maybe like an acre here and like a feeding floor and a barn. I could send all the young sheep out there for the summer somewhere up in the mountains in Ruidoso and-
Logan Newsom: Yeah ...
Sam Silvers: boy, I could grow some sheep out there.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. Papa K used to send some bucks out to a guy in New Mexico and through the summer, I mean that higher elevation, cooler nights- Get it ... those things would, they would get it. Yeah. Would, they would get after it.
Sam Silvers: So- So let's kinda, let's kinda recap here as, as we're talk- getting close to wrapping up.
Logan Newsom: Fall show prep for the fall, you know- Yep
Logan Newsom: we kinda talked, talked a little about that.
Sam Silvers: Yep. Fall show prep, validation, making sure we have all our stuff in, in gear for validation. We're double checking our, all our forms. We're double checking our tattoos.
Logan Newsom: Tattoos and TLBA.
Sam Silvers: TLBA tags.
Logan Newsom: I mean, the, the things that have to be double checked.
Sam Silvers: Yep. Uh, we're rough clipping every 30 to 45 days to see where we're at, [00:24:00] right?
Sam Silvers: Making sure we got cocci out of 'em. Uh, worming protocols in shape. Them skinny ones we're, we're kinda pushing on them a little bit. Maybe them bigger sheep we're gonna start kinda putting them on ice as you like to say.
Logan Newsom: Yep.
Sam Silvers: Uh, CD and T boosters, not a bad idea.
Logan Newsom: We do it, like that's a, that's something that I think, and, and I think we've had this conversation on one of the early episodes because Growing up, we did it every 30 days.
Sam Silvers: Yeah.
Logan Newsom: I don't know, you know, that was just what we did. Now we don't do anything near like that, you know? And I think if- I
Sam Silvers: know ...
Logan Newsom: again, reach out to your vet. We don't wanna get anybody, uh, mad at us, but, you know, I think a, a standard practice has always been those things get, you know, an initial dose early on as babies.
Logan Newsom: They get a booster, you know, maybe whenever, you know, they're starting to kinda get to like, say, a weaning phase, and then we always tell folks whenever you move them to new dirt and they take them home, hit them again there. I personally have this theory, and it doesn't make sense probably in the scientific medical journal, but whenever we go through, [00:25:00] especially on maybe some of those younger skinny ones that have maybe kinda had a rough summer, and maybe it's just a coincidence of all the things that we're doing, but it seems like if we'll revac those things, they kinda catch a gear.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. Like, it just kinda, like, seems like things maybe start to kinda hit on all cylinders, and so we will, especially on, um, you know, those ones that we kinda hit on a little bit there. If they've had a rough summer, if they're skinny, we'll literally almost kinda treat them like we just got them in. We'll revac them internal, external stuff, you know, whatever that looks like.
Logan Newsom: Um, you know, maybe some kinda antibiotic to kinda clear some stuff out. You know, just the, the whole- Yeah ... the whole, the whole nine yards, so.
Sam Silvers: And starting that, on that fall push again, we're... If we're gonna feed melatonin, probably time to be on it. Start on that. Making sure our leg wraps are in place. Yeah.
Sam Silvers: They're staying on. Treadmill and tracking's honed in.
Logan Newsom: Yeah.
Sam Silvers: Muzzles on the ones that need to muzzle them, and it's, it's game time before you know it.
Logan Newsom: Hey, that's what I tell. Like, I mean, it, it's all fine and great. Like, we can, we can kinda slow play a lot of stuff through the summer, but, like, you get to October, you better be [00:26:00] rolling.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. Like, it's that time. Like, if you're gonna be serious in the fall, um, or if you're gonna be serious in the spring, like, you have to have those things right in the fall because I guarantee your neighbor is, and there's a pile of people. There's 200 kids in here that spent this weekend in Fredericksburg that they decided that they wanted to get better, so-
Sam Silvers: Yeah
Logan Newsom: there's somebody out there that you're probably chasing and you're trying to be competitive with and all that's, all that's great, but you better, you better be humping it.
Sam Silvers: I tell my kids, you know, I, I say, "Every morning when you wake up, you need to be thinking about who's, who's outworking you today. That needs to be on the front of your mind."
Sam Silvers: So again, we went over fall prep, talked about a lot of things today. We're at the beautiful Fredericksburg, Texas, the wine capital of Texas. Yeah. I have to mention that, right?
Logan Newsom: Yeah.
Sam Silvers: Um, so if there's any wives out there that- Maybe they'll,
Logan Newsom: maybe they'll wine
Sam Silvers: sponsorship ... tasting. Yeah, that would be kinda cool. I might drink a little wine. I'm not a big drinker, but I kinda drink some wine.
Logan Newsom: I don't know if you'd, I don't know if you and wine-
Sam Silvers: Do, did you know this is, like, the bachelorette capital of-
Logan Newsom: Oh
Sam Silvers: party of the world?
Logan Newsom: Yeah, so, you know, we've got some family that are- Have you seen that pink [00:27:00] bus? Yeah, that's Brooke's Bubble Bus. Yeah. Shout out, Brooke. Uh, we'll, we'll be... That was one of the ones, uh... The next time we come down here we're gonna get on the Bubble Bus-
Sam Silvers: Do a
Logan Newsom: podcast ... and, uh, we're gonna do a podcast there at Brooke's.
Logan Newsom: Um, we're gonna get with Buddy and Grayson, with Buddy Love. We're gonna do some- Hey ... some interacting with, uh, the local fashionistas.
Sam Silvers: I just had a great idea. We should let the audience send in where they think we should shoot some of our podcasts at.
Logan Newsom: There you go. Where do we need to collab with?
Sam Silvers: Yeah.
Sam Silvers: Something fun- Triton.com, send it in ... entertaining where we can, we can, uh, shoot our podcast, something you might wanna see.
Logan Newsom: Yeah.
Sam Silvers: And, uh, we'll try to get that done.
Logan Newsom: Absolutely, or who we need to get as our next guest.
Sam Silvers: Yeah, there you go.
Logan Newsom: I thought that was something. We
Sam Silvers: got some- Who do you want as a guest?
Logan Newsom: Who do you wanna see on here?
Logan Newsom: We got some, we've got some good stuff that's fixing to drop. We've got some good, uh, stuff that might have dropped by the time this one comes, but-
Sam Silvers: We need a celebrity. If there's any celebrities in the audience, we'd love to have you on.
Logan Newsom: Like, who are you thinking?
Sam Silvers: I don't, I don't know.
Logan Newsom: Do you n- do you actually know any [00:28:00] celebrities?
Sam Silvers: No, not really.
Logan Newsom: Hmm.
Sam Silvers: I don't
Logan Newsom: I don't know. Yeah, I mean, we have a, over a million views. We're freaking influencers and we're celebrities.
Sam Silvers: Yeah, I did have somebody want my autograph.
Logan Newsom: You had 200 people this morning that lined up in your lawn. You are a celebrity.
Sam Silvers: I don't know. No, I feel like Logan Newsom.
Logan Newsom: I mean, that's significantly more than I've ever
Sam Silvers: had.
Sam Silvers: It, it, I looked like Logan at, at, uh, San Antonio, just wrapped around the line.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. There's some of that stuff that we need to implement at our house, so folks that are listening, uh, don't think that you're alone. We, we need to, we need to do some better on, on some of that stuff too.
Logan Newsom: So good luck in the fall. Make sure you're grinding. Hey, no loser talk. Grinding. We talked about this the other day.
Sam Silvers: No
Logan Newsom: loser
Sam Silvers: talk. Um,
Logan Newsom: there's, again, we talked about it here with this, uh, Driven deal that Sam and Jurahee and, and that whole crew has put on. Um, there is 200 kids, and I'll tell you, I think the thing that's very unique is they had 200 kids.
Logan Newsom: I would say 75 to 80% of them, I had no idea who they were. I thought that was [00:29:00] very unique. So this industry is growing more than sometimes people like to maybe admit or want to shed light on. Yeah. And there is 200 kids out there that decided that they didn't wanna get their ass kicked and they wanted to get better.
Sam Silvers: Absolutely.
Logan Newsom: And- That's
Sam Silvers: good to see ...
Logan Newsom: they ain't, they ain't sitting on Facebook whining 'cause they don't have daddy's checkbook, so-
Sam Silvers: Amen ...
Logan Newsom: get after it and grind.
Sam Silvers: Like, follow, share, subscribe. We'll catch you down the road.
Logan Newsom: Take care.
