Help! I'm Ageing

How do we age well? There's no shortage of advice out there. The hardest part is figuring out which advice to trust.

That's what this podcast is for. Each episode, you'll meet people who've lived through the questions you're now asking yourself. You'll have all your burning questions answered by researchers from the National Centre for Healthy Ageing, who have devoted their careers to helping us live well and age well.

In this series you'll learn all about:
  • Alcohol - how much is too much?
  • Dementia, and what the evidence actually says about prevention
  • Staying in your own home for as long as possible
  • When to see a geriatrician (and what a geriatrician actually does)
  • How to think about residential aged care
  • How unstable housing can impact our health
  • The everyday changes that make the biggest difference to how you age
Your hosts are Dr Taya Collyer (lead biostatistician, National Centre for Healthy Ageing) and Tracy Parish (broadcaster and medical research journalist).

What is Help! I'm Ageing?

Ageing well. Living well. Answering big questions about getting older, with real evidence, real stories, and honest conversations.

Tracy Parish:

Hi there. It's no secret that we're all getting older. So how can we age well and live well? We all want to find out, don't we, Taya?

Taya Collyer:

We do, Tracy. Ageing, the A-word. It's a part of living, and there is so much chatter about ageing. I think it's quite confusing for people to try and navigate this idea of ageing. What should we focus on?

Taya Collyer:

Where should we put our energy? What things can we let slide? How can we help our loved ones? And how can people work out who to trust when it comes to advice about ageing? So I'm really excited that we'll be talking with experts on big topics that Australians are thinking about as they age.

Taya Collyer:

I'm Taya Collyer, I'm the lead bio statistician at the National Centre for Healthy Ageing and one of the co-hosts of this FAB podcast.

Tracy Parish:

And I'm Tracy Parish, a broadcaster and a medical research journalist and the other co-host of this podcast. Well, many of us are worried about ageing, but we're hoping that with the right tools and knowledge, we can help you make some positive changes. That's why we're calling the pod Help! I'm Ageing. Ageing well, Living well.

Tracy Parish:

We're going to draw on the expertise of the National Centre for Healthy Ageing, the researchers, people with lived experience, and we're going to share their real stories and real evidence with you. There's so many issues when we think about ageing, things like dementia. Are we drinking too much alcohol? Yes. I'm very interested in that one.

Tracy Parish:

Dealing with unstable housing. How do we stay living independently for as long as we can? Knowing when to reach out to a geriatrician and finding out what is a geriatrician and maybe considering when it might be the right time for residential aged care. We know these are big looming issues. They're not everything that everyone wants to talk about around the table, but we think this is where the pod might make a difference.

Tracy Parish:

Doesn't it, Taya?

Taya Collyer:

Yes. Everyone's got their two cents, their advice on how to age well, but I'm really excited about sharing evidence with the Australian community from researchers who have dedicated their careers to these questions. So we're going to cut through the BS, cut through the jargon, the advertising, the hype, and really understand how can Australians navigate ageing in a way that's going to give them the best outcomes and produce the best society for all of us, Tracy.

Tracy Parish:

Yep. We're going to have the chance to ask the big questions for you. We're gonna help you, hopefully, your family, your friends, and everyone age well. We're always going to put you first, though. This podcast is about bringing the right information backed by evidence so it can help change your life.
