I.
It is 20 hours past midnight as Thursday breezes away, and it is time to roll out our funk punk soul rock Sampled & AMPED experience for tonight, cooled into the fabric of spacetime as July 14, 2022. This is Danno welcome welcome to the show, still in a bit of a lull music-wise as the post-Glastonbury/4th of July doldrums have made slim pickings in the music world of late, but there’s still plenty to go over in both hours as tomorrow seems to be bringing the machine back to normal capacity, and as always there’s plenty of slept on joints to cover in the process as well. Naturally, we kick off tonight with our Sampled funk & soul first hour, with a new joint from Loyle Carner being a definite highlight along with a smattering of other new biz to showcase along with some older jawns. Of course our AMPED rock thing is in full effect after we hit nine bells as well, with Gwangju’s man on the kit Dan Lloyd going through some of his favorite recent tunes while letting you know about a few new albums that just dropped or are about to tomorrow, so as always as ever lots to do before we reach the end point for programming tonight. However, tonight we start at the beginning for Leon Bridges with a belated happy birthday wish, and we’ll begin with the Texas soul master and the 3 kids from space that landed on earth in a Thai airplane to commence the magic. THIS is The Drop.
Khruangbin & Leon Bridges – C-Side
Quarter one of The Drop on your Sampled and AMPED Thursday has lifted off and we are in orbit for our funk and soul first half. (Korean) What’s up Drop Tops, Danno here back to the usual unusual after our road trip last week, and Dan Lloyd also joins us for his favorites in the rock world after 9pm tonight for our AmPED feature as well.
To start things we just played a little something off of the Texas Sun EP by Khruangbin and belated birthday boy Leon Bridges called C-Side. Bridges, who has become a real marquee name in the years since his introduction to the world with his debut album coming home in 2015 was born yesterday in 1989 in Atlanta although he’d spend most of his life in Dallas.
Hailed as the 2nd coming of Sam Cooke, Bridges has gone from strength to strength since coming home dropped, with two more albums also proving popular critical darlings. Of course, Texas Sun absolutely blew up after Barack Obama highlighted the title track on his summer 2020 playlist, and the follow-up Texas Moon EP just dropped as well this year.
Happy birthday, Leon Bridges, although belated. A true classic and class act here in our own time.
Just a quick reminder…#9870 (50/100)…stream
So, let’s get a little something new to begin the show proper tonight, and we have something from WILSN (note sp.) called Tell Me to open things up, then we have some less recent but still prescient vibes from Karate Boogaloo and Swan to complete the triangle. We’ll talk dynamics after the sounds cease, but for now THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday foray.
____
Back on The Drop what is the deal this evening, Drop Brethren (Korean)? Danno here on the mic in GFN HQ studio 2, and we are into everything for this week with our first triad of newer stuff to properly set the vibe. Dan Lloyd joins us after the halftime team talk for our AMPED rock weekly once again, but for now we must tell you what we know about those roundabouts…
WILSN – Tell Me* (…this is a standalone single that dropped actually back in late March but is just now catching on with some of the more studious playlists on the streams. The artist is Shannon Busch, who hails from Melbourne, Aus and is just now getting to releasing tunes professionally, this being the artist’s 3rd career single.)
Karate Boogaloo & Danielle Ponder – Little Bit (…speaking of Melbourne, we kept one foot there for that 2nd tune with one of our favorites teaming up on a 7” single last year with Danielle Ponder who’s out of NYC nowadays. The former public defender Ponder has a debut album coming out later this year called Some of Us Are Brave.)
Swan – Madone (…not sure about this quartet as far as background, but the group is lead by Domingo Mariani and they’re based in Paris, with this tune being part of a 7” single that dropped in June.)
Quick …#9870, social media.
Moving towards the first break tonight, we have a big new joint from Loyle Carner to check out called Hate. The London-based rapper shows a definitely darker and more aggressive stance than previous works, reflecting on what it means to be black in the macro and microcosmic. The tune also comes with a great video that Carner self-directed as well. After that we’re going to finish instrumentally with a new one from Orions Belte performing live recently called how long is cold pizza good for, and that is gonna wrap our existential first quarter. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday night.
Loyle Carner – Hate*
Orions Belte – How long is…cold pizza good for (Live at Ostenmarkseteren)

II.
The Drop commences the slow burn 2nd quarter for tonight’s Sampled funk & soul first half. Danno here helping the vibes flow through, studio 2, GFN HQ. Gwangju’s Lord of the Drums Dan Lloyd is up after part 2 for our AMPED 2nd half tonight so you know what’s going on in the rock world. To the recap of what you just heard, that was...
Elia y Elizabeth – Descripcion (Tu) (Buscabulla rework) (…we featured another remix on the show previously from this upcoming compilation Elia y Elizabeth were a famed duo from Columbia who started making tunes in the 1960’s and reached international stardom by the following decade. Buscabulla of course is the famed Puerto Rican married duo who dropped their debut Regresa or Regression LP in 2020.)
Brijean – Caldwell’s Way (…this is the latest tune to drop from the upcoming Angelo EP, which is out August 5. This very muted tune from the Oakland duo speaks of missing home and pining for an unreachable past.)
Now moving along, we have a trio coming up and we’re still cooking slow for tonight. Up next is Stefan Mahendra and fika to draw the first line on the triforce then it’s Sessa and El Michels to draw the 2nd and 3rd, all of which we’ll have stuff to say about on the other side. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday.
__________
The Drop moves ever forward with the tick tock of the clock as we inch towards halftime presently. What’s happening, Drop Gangsters? (Kor) Danno here doing my thing on this Thursday night, and Dan Lloyd rocks out in short order with our AMPED rock weekly as well so do keep it right here on GFN. As to what just went into the radiological space elevator, let’s retrieve the data...
Stefan Mahendra feat fika – Orbit (…this is the 4th tune from an EP that, just like the songs therein has been developing slowly over this past year, but is due out in full later on this year. Fika is in charge of the production on this record, with this tune featuring the London-based Mahendra musing upon all the ways that he is amazed by his partner. Do check the songs already out from this EP, they’re all fantastic.)
Sessa – Irmao de Nuvem (…this tune meaning cloud brother in poorly delivered Portuguese is from Sessa’s sophomore LP Estrela Acesa or bright star. The album dropped late last month via Mexican Summer, although it must be pointed out the artist is Brasilero.)
El Michels Affair – Cold & Clear (inst.) (…the arrangement from a cut that appeared on the collab LP between Leon Michels and Liam Bailey on the Ekundayo Inversions LP which dropped last year, and now we have all the instrumentals for the DJ’s and heads to enjoy from the album, which also came out last month in June.)
Moving along to halftime, we’re gonna up the tempo a good bit with a remix of Rick Wade’s Funky One by Alexxei & Nig, and that should dance us out to the halftime buzzer while Dan Lloyd arrives shortly to throw rocks in hour 2. Until then and until ten THIS is The Drop.
Rick Wade – Funky One (Alexxei & Nig remix)

III & IV AMPED
Silversun Pickups – Scared Together
Black midi – Sugar/Tzu
Viagra Boys – Big Boy
The Chats – I’ve Been Drunk in Every Pub in Brisbane
Bloods – Take Aim
Holy Fawn – Dimensional Bleed

Jawbox - Grip
The Cult – Give Me Mercy
No Devotion – Starlings
Interpol – Gran Hotel
Sorry – Let the Lights On
…And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead – Millenium Actress ft Amanda Palmer

Silversun Pickups – Scared Together
New music is on its way from Silversun Pickups. Today, the band announced their sixth album Physical Thrills and shared new single “Scared Together.
Produced by Butch Vig, the LP is slated for release August 19th via their New Machine Recordings imprint and will arrive three years after 2019’s Widow’s Weeds.
“This record is alive,” teased lead singer Brian Aubert in a statement. “It sits somewhere in between a collection of songs and an imaginary friend. A friend that from March of 2020 to April of 2021 would not only introduce itself to me but keep me company through that time of intense isolation. A friend that would remind me that in this instance, the whole world was feeling the same way as well.”
Written and recorded during the coronavirus pandemic, the album is led by single “Scared Together,” which finds the band exploring trauma bonds crafted through fear, complete with an equally ominous music video directed by Claire Marie Vogel.
“You never know what can bring two people together,” Aubert added of the track. “Sometimes it’s something light and comfy. Sometimes it’s a shared love of some kind of totem or idol that is dear. Other times, it’s something a little more dreadful. But whatever works, I say. To each their own. This song is about becoming close and intimate with someone through hardship. Being thrown into something quite frightening brings out some shared qualities that connect them.”

Black midi – Sugar/Tzu
This week, UK weirdos Black Midi are releasing a new album, Hellfire, their follow-up to last year’s Cavalcade. They’ve shared a pair of singles from it so far, “Welcome To Hell” and “Eat Men Eat,” and today they’re back with one last one, “Sugar/Tzu,” a characteristically chaotic collision of jazz and rock that comes with a music video directed by Noel Paul that takes place in a boxing ring. The band’s Geordie Greep has a whole explanation behind this:
“Sugar/Tzu” imagines that in 2163 it’s possible to see a championship fight between two 600 lb men. Albeit in a so-called ‘Leadweight’ division. The fight is between Sun Sugar and Sun Tzu; the latter being a fan of the Chinese general, hoping to channel his strength; and the former looking to continue the lineage of Sugar Ray Robinson, Leonard etc.”

Viagra Boys – Big Boy
From Brooklyn Vegan’s review of the excellent, possibly album-of-the-year, Cave World (out last week): Cave World also features "Big Boy," a techno-blues collaboration with Sleaford Mods' Jason Williamson that feels as inevitable as it does perfect. When Williamson shows up, asking "And all the people in the club go, Don’t you want it?," the track has transformed into a shuffling, baggy anthem. It's fantastic.

The Chats – I’ve Been Drunk in Every Pub in Brisbane
The Chats have shared the new single, ‘I’ve Been Drunk In Every Pub In Brisbane’. The 90-second punk rock tune arrives a day after it was announced that The Chats would be supporting Guns N’ Roses on their November Australian tour.
‘I’ve Been Drunk In Every Pub In Brisbane’ is set to feature on The Chats’ forthcoming second album, GET F*CKED, which is due out on Friday, 19th August. The Sunny Coast trio will show off their new album with a national tour in September 2022, two months before the GN’R support stint.

Bloods – Take Aim
Australian punks Bloods have released a video for their new song "Take Aim". The video was directed by frontwoman Marihuzka Cornelius's 8-year old daughter Penny. The song is off their upcoming album Together, Baby! due out September 23 via Share It Music. Bloods released their EP Seattle in 2020.
Holy Fawn – Dimensional Bleed
Phoenix post-metal act Holy Fawn are returning with their sophomore album, Dimensional Bleed, on September 9th. Ahead of the release, the band has offered up the video for the title track.
Holy Fawn traverse quite a bit of sonic territory in under three minutes on “Dimensional Bleed.” Washes of guitar and walls of feedback build to vicious mid-section with crushing drums and harsh vocals. While there are traits of black metal and sludge, the song doesn’t fall into any one category, following the amorphous heavy-music template of Holy Fawn’s acclaimed debut, Death Spells.
“’Dimensional Bleed’ vaguely refers to a concept of multiple dimensions and timelines that could exist simultaneously,” said guitarist Evan Phelps in a press release. “A lot of different media has alluded to this ideology, and I find the possibility of multiple dimensions intersecting and bleeding into others to be fascinating.”
Holy Fawn previously released the single “Death Is a Relief” ahead of their spring tour with Deafheaven. Fans of the latter band will find much to appreciate about Holy Fawn’s direction on the new tracks.

Jawbox - Grip
Jawbox, the great DC post-hardcore band fronted by indie super-producer and future Burning Airlines member J. Robbins, just put out their first new music since 1996. Technically, I guess it’s new old music. Jawbox’s surprise-released The Revisionist EP includes two reworked Jawbox classics, “Grip” and “Consolation” (both from their 1991 debut album Grippe), plus a cover of “Lowdown” from Wire’s Pink Flag. On Bandcamp, the band succinctly explains, “As Jawbox rehearsed for shows with the addition of guitarist Brooks Harlan, we reworked a couple of songs from our first record Grippe. We felt those, as well as a Wire cover, were worth recording. Enjoy!”

The Cult – Give Me Mercy
The Cult have returned today with the announcement of their first album in six years. Under the Midnight Sun, the English rock band’s 11th studio LP, is due out October 7th via Black Hill, and as a preview, they’ve shared the lead single “Give Me Mercy” today.
Produced by Tom Dalgety (Pixies, Ghost, Royal Blood), Under the Midnight Sun was inspired in part by co-founding member’s Ian Astbury experience in at Provinssirock festival in Finland, witnessing that surreal stretch in summer north of the Arctic Circle when the sun doesn’t set: “It’s three in the morning, the sun’s up, and there’s all these beautiful people in this halcyon moment,” he writes in a press release. “People are laying on the grass, making out, drinking, smoking. There were rows of flowers at the front of the stage from the performances earlier that evening. It was an incredible moment.”
That oddly stunning experience manifests itself in Under the Midnight Sun, which pulls inspiration from Brian Jones, Brion Gysin, William Burroughs, Buddhism, the Beats, and the Age of Aquarius. As the band tell it, the record’s overarching message is about finding beauty in shared experiences — which oftentimes is music.
“Give Me Mercy” feels classically Cult, as the band envelop their gothic rock influences with a modern sheen. The music video, directed by Juan Azulay, uses juxtaposing imagery to emphasize the song’s themes of finding new meanings within society’s antiquated dualities.

No Devotion – Starlings
No Devotion have been trying to mount a comeback for a bit now. The Geoff Rickly-led band that includes former members of Lostprophets first announced a reunion last year, which was then pushed back. Then they plotted out some opening dates for Cursive that were then canceled. But last month they scheduled some shows in the UK and the US for July; the UK shows ended up getting postponed, but No Devotion made their grand return to the stage for a surprise appearance during Thursday’s set at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City on Saturday night, and then played their first full show in 7 years on Monday in Brooklyn.
Through this whole process of trying to play live (and even beforehand), the band — which has been pared down to a trio made up of Rickly, Lee Gaze, and Stuart Richardson — has been working on a new album, the follow-up to their 2015 debut Permanence (which recently returned to streaming services). The new album is called No Oblivion, and it was produced by Stuart Richardson and mixed by Dave Fridmann. It’ll be out in September, and today they’re sharing its lead single and opening track, “Starlings.”

Interpol – Gran Hotel
This week Interpol are releasing their long-awaited follow-up to 2018’s Marauder. The Other Side Of Make-Believe is out on Friday, and already we’ve heard singles “Toni,” “Something Changed,” “Fables.” Also this week, Interpol are launching “Big Shot City” a global exhibition and pop-up shop in collaboration with photographer Atiba Jefferson and Brain Dead Clothing; it’s running July 15-17 in London and simultaneously takes place in Los Angeles, New York, Mexico City, and Tokyo. Now, Interpol has one more album single to share, “Gran Hotel,” which gets a music video directed by Malia James.
“The lyrics to Gran Hotel tell a story of grief and heartbreak, of a character processing loss,” says Paul Banks. “Working with a fantastic camera crew and with the help of two very talented actors, Malia created a powerful video that conveys the events that lead to that loss. It’s a work of art filled with mood and color that we are very proud to share with you.”

Sorry – Let the Lights On
Sorry are returning this year with their highly-anticipated sophomore album. Anywhere but Here is due out on October 7th via Domino, and as a preview, the eccentric British band have shared the single “Let the Lights On” today along with an accompanying music video. Additionally, Sorry have also mapped out a short run of European shows for Fall 2022.
Along with band members Louis O’Bryen and Asha Lorenz, Anywhere but Here was co-produced by Portishead’s Adrian Utley in Bristol, giving the record an eerie flair that perfectly suits its lyrical themes of feeling young and frustrated at the world. Throughout the 13 tracks, Sorry channel the homespun charm of folk greats like Carly Simon, the off-kilter guitars of cult ’90s bands like Slint, and the artsy beats of modern studio wizzes like Kanye West, sometimes within the same song.
“It’s a fun love song for the club. A bittersweet track for us. It kinda touches on how you want to be honest and say things directly, but in the end that can also ruin them. If you’ve got a light don’t let it go out… sometimes you have to leave things behind but it’s hard to do.”
The darkly playful “Let the Lights On” sees Sorry put their own spin on the trope of finding love on the dance floor — a track that threatens to make you cry as you bust a move. “[It’s] a bittersweet track for us,” the band write in a press release. “It kinda touches on how you want to be honest and say things directly, but in the end that can also ruin them. If you’ve got a light don’t let it go out… sometimes you have to leave things behind but it’s hard to do.”
…And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead – Millenium Actress ft Amanda Palmer
This week, …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead are releasing their new album XI: BLEED HERE NOW. The Austin band has shared two pairs of singles from it so far, “No Confidence” and “Salt In Your Eyes” and “Contra Mundum” and Penny Candle. Today, they’re back with a lone track, “Millennium Actress,” but this one’s got one of the album’s featured guests in the form of some vocals from Amanda Palmer.
