Live More, Earn More

Have you ever felt exhausted by your business… even though you used to love it?
This week, Lucy shares a very honest reflection after spending an entire weekend trapped in spreadsheets — and realising just how quickly we can drift away from the parts of business that actually bring us joy.
In this episode, we talk about:
  • Why so many entrepreneurs secretly feel disconnected from their work
  • The difference between work that energises you and work that drains you
  • How business owners accidentally outsource the parts they love most
  • The danger of getting stuck in “shoulds”
  • How to reconnect with your purpose, creativity and zone of genius
  • What to automate, simplify or delegate so your business feels lighter again
If you've been feeling heavy, overwhelmed, uninspired or stuck doing admin instead of the work you truly love — this episode is your reminder that you can build a business that supports your life, rather than drains it.
Because success shouldn’t come at the expense of joy.

As a small startup business owner,
I will often spend a weekend

working, and I don't mind in the
slightest when I'm doing what I love.

And normally I can be creative and
filled with joy, and I don't mind it.

This weekend, I spent the
weekend doing spreadsheets.

I probably spent about 10 hours
staring at a spreadsheet, and

I had such a pounding headache, and I
realized this is not my zone of genius.

This is not my joy.

And it got me thinking about
work and how I'm lucky.

I normally do what I love, and I'm
really excited and happy to do it.

But staring at a spreadsheet was not a
thing that I love, and I realized how

people, when they're in their day jobs,
how they may grow to hate their work.

I've-- I'm lucky, i've
never hated my work.

I've never, you know,
not enjoyed what I do.

I was absolutely fulfilling my purpose
as a journalist, and I loved it.

And, you know, and as a business
owner, and I've really enjoyed that.

This time, I was lucky enough to be
working and collaborating with someone

else, and that made it so much easier
because at least we could laugh about it

together and, you know, both, both l-laugh
at our woeful spreadsheet experience and

all these things, you know, of just, like,
lack of knowledge on the spreadsheet.

I think a lot of people realize that
they hate work, that they hate their

job, but maybe they hate the work that
drains them, and there is a massive

difference And I think it's the same
for business owners, that you can find

yourself-- You start off doing and
building a business that you love because

it's your passion, and very often people
can find themselves, especially as the

team grows, and I have been in this
situation, where the team gets to do the

creative, interesting work, and you're
managing them or you're looking at the

P&L, the profit and loss, and you're
managing the spreadsheets, the data, the,

the metrics of, "Can I make this work?"

And maybe that drains you.

And I certainly found when I had a bigger
team, I found it really draining 'cause

I was sucked away from the work that I
enjoyed and instead I was having to do

the work that was the draining stuff.

I think society normalizes misery
at work and being miserable and as

though that's how work should be.

But when you're in your zone of
genius, when you are doing work that

fills you with passion and purpose,
then you don't have that issue.

And that is something to really try to
remember when you are doing your thing,

that, "Is this filling me with joy?"

Because you don't have to accept the,
the normalized rules of, "Oh yeah,

we go to work, we clock in, we do our
thing." You don't have to accept that.

You can build a life that you love.

You can create work that you
love, doing what fills you with

joy and passion and excitement.

You can absolutely do that.

So if you are feeling like you are sort
of procrastinating on a constant basis,

you're not doing what you need to do,
and you're feeling exhausted after simple

tasks, or you're losing your creativity
or feeling resentful, then, you know,

it's time to really have a, a word with
yourself because, you know, are you trying

to escape your business, fantasizing
about, um, you know, not having to do

the tech or the admin or the operations,
and you feel disconnected From the

mission, from your purpose, from your joy.

And if you're feeling like that, then,
you know, m-maybe it's just, it- give

yourself a day or two, take yourself
away and look at, "Okay, what is bringing

me joy? What was my in-initial mission
and purpose, and how can I get back

to that?" And I certainly, I remember
a time when, you know, right now I

feel really energized and excited and,
um, so aligned with what I'm doing.

I'm loving it, absolutely loving it.

Maybe not the spreadsheets, but
the rest of it I absolutely love.

But I have had times where I've
felt disconnected, and I think it

was when I wasn't being creative
and being hands-on, and I was kind

of removed from a lot of things.

And I wasn't-- I also really missed
connecting with people on social media.

And I had other people writing comments
for me on social media, and, you know,

obviously paying them a whack of money.

But also, I felt disconnected.

I wasn't having chats and conversation,
and I much prefer the, you know, me

doing it, where I am hands-on and
doing it, and I'm not outsourcing

my business to everyone else.

Okay.

So I am a believer in outsourcing,
but outsourcing the right things,

and I was outsourcing the things that
brought me joy when really we want to

outsource things that don't bring us joy.

So I always have an accountant, and
I would say get an accountant to...

You know, bec- if that, if the numbers
and spreadsheets don't bring you joy.

Get tech support if that's not your thing.

Um, we are so... As solopreneurs, we can
be everything in business, the customer

support, the social media manager,
whatever it is, and, you know, outsource

the things that don't bring you joy.

And I think for me, I, um, this
weekend was a unique project and so...

And I look at it now this morning
and I think, "Oh my God, I should've

just stuck it in Claude or ChatGPT."

And a lot of the counting of, basically
it's for an event and counting

numbers of people at an event, we
could've done that with ChatGPT.

Um, so anyway, that's an aside,
and that was a little learning of

me of like, ugh, I use ChatGPT for
everything and Claude for everything.

Um, and- I could have done that.

But there we go, we live and learn.

So

if you are feeling like you
are disconnected from the bits

of the business that you love,

then let's look at a way for you
to reconnect with what you love.

So perhaps you absolutely love going
to all the networking events and

connecting with people, um, or having
those, you know, calls and Zoom

calls and discovery calls, you know,
whatever it is, or going into people's

workplaces, the connection, the people.

But you're not so keen on maybe it's the
spreadsheets like me, or whether it's

doing the social media, I hear that from
so many people, or it's doing the tech.

And that is the thing that I have
realized for so many businesses

that they struggle with the tech.

And I was looking at an old
client of mine who I love dearly.

She's gorgeous.

Um, and she has great thriving business.

Um, and I've never really looked at
her website since we stopped working

together probably five years ago now.

And we've always stayed in touch.

She's very sweet.

And, um, I was looking at her website and,
you know, she's, she's doing the thing.

She's marketing.

She has a great product that she is,
you know, digital product she's selling.

And I went to look at, you know, the
website and sales page, and it was

not in alignment with her talents and
brilliance because basically the tech

was a bit, I don't wanna say shoddy,
but it wasn't as good as it could be.

Okay?

It wasn't, it wasn't as good
as her and the product she's

offering and what she's doing.

And that is the thing, that there's such
a disconnect sometimes between the tech

for people and what they're trying to
sell, and it just lets them down in the

same way that maybe, you know, their
customer service or something like that

if they're feeling ragged and they're
not able to respond to everybody.

And that is one of my missions at Flowelle
because I really passionately believe

that if you can simplify the tech and make
it so good for people, make it that they

have a brilliant website or a brilliant
sales page so they look really ... they

look the bee's knees, they look the
part, that they-- it's a reflection

of their talents and brilliance, then-
And we simplify that tech so people can

get back to doing the work they love.

So if that's you, where you are sort
of feeling like there's a disconnect,

there's a disconnect between, you know,
you and your talents and brilliance

and your sales page or your website,
then I would love to help you.

And I'd love to, you know, within
Flowelle, get you set up, get you

sorted, and, and make something
magnificent that reflects you and

your amazing potential and brilliance.

So anyway, that's an aside.

I had jotted down a few questions
that I thought might be useful

to just help you stay on purpose.

So have a think, what parts of your
business where you just get so absorbed

and, in the moment where you're loving
it, that you lose track of time,

where you're completely consumed in a
good, positive way with that business?

Okay?

So think about that.

So for me, it's when I'm being
creative, and I can be creative with

writing, with designing websites.

I love it.

I absolutely love it.

Um, with just being, like,
visually creative as well.

The parts that make me feel
heavy, what makes you feel heavy?

And like I've said, I struggle
with kind of the spreadsheets.

I'm not particularly interested
in the numbers in business.

But in order to be successful in
business, you need to, you need

to learn to love the numbers.

So it's finding ways to love the numbers.

Now, I have sort of found ways, and I've
had to work on this over many years, to,

to look at profit and loss and really
know where I am with the numbers, and I do

my numbers every single month, so I know
where I am, and that makes me feel good.

And there's, there's a kind of joy at
the end of that process But this weekend

it wasn't about the profit and loss, but
it was about spreadsheets and numbers,

and that definitely made me feel heavy.

So made me feel kind of just drained.

What parts of your business
do you find draining?

Okay, what would you do if nobody
paid you but you just did it?

Okay, and obviously within reason.

And so for me, I love being creative,
and I would happily do that for peanuts.

So think about, you know, that one.

And what about what are you doing
because you think you should?

Okay, that should question just
because everyone else does it.

That's the way it's always been.

What should you do?

And you know that one is a, is a
really big one because we can, we can

do things because it's always been
done that way rather than because it's

actually the right way in your business.

So if you're stuck in doing something
because you think you should,

perhaps it's time to
shake off the shoulds.

And then in that process,
what can you simplify?

What can you automate?

One of the things I really love is, you
know, I work with kind of a lot of small

business owners, they might be therapists
or healers, and we automate that system.

So, you know, it's, it's bringing
the booking, the discovery call, the

filling in the form, the payment,
just making that so much simpler.

How can you automate or delegate
or simplify what you're doing so

it just becomes much, much simpler?

Because I think for so many
business owners, sometimes they

are disconnected from the joy.

They're disconnected from the parts of
the business that they... the reason

they set up their business, the reason
they, decided to fulfill this passion

and purpose and instead have become
disconnected with doing the spreadsheets

or whatever it may be, or just managing
people or just looking at the numbers

or whatever it may be, where that part
of the business does not bring them joy.

And so You know, think to yourself,
"What am I doing that I can delegate,

automate, simplify?" Just pass out to
someone else where it doesn't bring

you joy because You're doing it.

You're making it happen,
and you are not far away.

You're just a fraction of a degree away
from a business that brings you joy.

But maybe you've slightly gone off course.

I was listening to Tony Robbins., You
can get the Unleash the Power Within,

which is the seminar you can go to in
person, which I've been to many times,

and I was listening to that., You can
get it on Audible, which is great.

I love it.

And I was listening as I was running
in the fields, and he was talking about

how when you fly a helicopter, like,
if you move a slight fraction of the

degree one way, you, you go completely
off course 'cause it moves so fast.

So you're heading ... You could be
heading, like, I don't know, let's say,

30 miles off course rather than the
direction you're wanting to go in, and

I think that's the same in business.

Sometimes we can get caught up in doing
the things that we think we should do, and

we sort of head off in a general direction
thinking we're going the right way.

But actually, we get distracted,
and we slightly miss the target.

We're going off in a slightly different
direction, and then suddenly we wake up

and we realize that we're far away from
our purpose and our mission and that

we ... You know, we're 60 miles out.

And, you know, for you, it's thinking
about, "Okay, how can I reconnect

with that passion and purpose?"

How can you build a life and business
that feels good, that feels great,

and you're not sort of trapped?

Because I promise it's not that difficult
to untrap yourself from the business, but

it is about having a really good, strong
look at yourself and working out, "What is

it that I love? What is it that brings me
passion and purpose and joy, and what are

the parts of the business that drain me?"

And then figuring out, "How can I
automate those? How can I, outsource

those or simplify them so you're not
having to do the things that drain you,

but you can still carry on building
your really successful business?"

Thank you so much for listening.

Have an amazing day whatever you're
doing, and remember, you don't have to

stick to the, "I should be doing this."

You can create a business that
works for you and your life so

you can live more, work less, and
bring more joy into your life.
