Good morning and
welcome to Morning Serial.
(upbeat music)
Okay, good morning
and welcome to Tuesday.
And it wasn't a fluke yesterday.
We are back to full
episodes here on Morning Serial.
And even better, today
is National Cuddle Day,
which is a reminder here
that sometimes it's okay
to slow down and feel safe for a minute.
Or maybe you can give a
cuddle to someone else
that may just need it a
little more than you do.
You never know what
someone else is going through.
Okay, here is the answer to
yesterday's trivia question.
206, is that what you said?
206 bones in the human body.
And most of them, I
would say, are protesting
getting out of bed
following that long holiday season.
Well, now it's time for
the essential vitamins
at our morning serial.
And it's from
birthday boy, Rowan Atkinson.
You might know him better as Mr. Bean.
He said, "I'm not afraid of silence.
It can be very powerful."
And this is a great
reminder of the wisdom
that we learn over time to
be comfortable in silence,
even an upper hand that we
might gain at certain times.
So take time to find that space.
It will be rewarding for you.
All right, you've heard enough from me.
Let's pour in the let
them theory by Mel Robbins
in today's book review.
And today's truth is
why change is so hard.
It's truth number two.
Human beings are wired to
move toward what feels good.
That sounds about right.
Robbins explains that
our brains aren't designed
for long-term improvement.
They're designed for comfort.
Quote, "Your brain's job is to keep you
safe and comfortable,
not to help you grow," end quote.
And that's why scrolling and
snacking and staying stuck,
it feels easier than
starting something new, right?
At the beginning of the year,
we're doing all these new things.
That change, it feels uncomfortable.
It's because it threatens the familiarity
you have in your life right now.
Even bad habits, they feel good because
they're predictable.
Robbins says, quote,
"Comfort is the enemy of change,"
end quote.
And that doesn't mean comfort is bad.
It just means we shouldn't
confuse it with progress.
Now, Mel also emphasizes that motivation
isn't something you wait for.
It's something that follows action.
Waiting until something
feels good first, it's a trap.
Growth often feels awkward.
It feels boring or maybe
uncertain at the very beginning.
However, the let them
mindset, it shows up here
when we stop shaming
ourselves for choosing comfort.
And instead, we get curious about it.
Why does this feel good?
What am I avoiding?
And what small step could I take anyways?
Robbins reminds us that
change doesn't require
a dramatic overhaul, just
a willingness to tolerate
a little discomfort
in service of something
to better yourself, okay?
Here is your Tuesday takeaway.
If you want change,
stop waiting for comfort
and start moving gently without it.
So today, maybe offer
yourself a little grace
and maybe an actual
cuddle if it's available.
All right, now the prize from
the bottom of the cereal box,
today's morning
cereal trivia question is,
what is the hottest
planet in our solar system?
All right, if I have an idea.
I'll give you a hint, it's not Pluto,
if that's even still a planet.
Well, we will see you back
here tomorrow for the answer
and for more sugar for the soul.
