The question “Will AI replace accountants?” is showing up in accounting classrooms, conference sessions, CPE programs, firms, and finance departments.

Nikki Winston, CPA, has a direct answer: AI will not replace accountants.

AI in Accounting can support transactional work, generate draft journal entries, assist with research, help users locate information inside ERP systems, organize data, and supplement an analysis. The distinction is that Accounting work extends far beyond task completion.

Accountants interpret what happened, explain why it happened, advise stakeholders, protect confidential information, verify the evidence, and take responsibility for the work. Those obligations require organizational context, professional judgment, relationships, and human accountability.

In this episode, Nikki discusses supplemental AI versus generative AI, the risk of accepting the first output, the consequences of weak prompts, client confidentiality inside CPA firms, and the danger of allowing technology to replace critical thinking. She also speaks directly to accounting students and new professionals who are evaluating whether the profession still offers a viable future.

The Accounting profession is changing. The work that survives will demand deeper thinking, stronger communication, sound judgment, and the ability to use technology without surrendering the brain behind the work.

Opening Position: AI Will Not Replace Accountants
Nicole Winston, CPA: This is why AI will not replace accountants.
This topic has been a popular breakout session and point of discussion at conferences, webinars, CPE events, and professional gatherings. Practitioners are asking what AI looks like inside their firms, while students and new professionals are asking what their career trajectory looks like now that AI is in the mix.
Regardless of the audience, the hill I will stand on is this: AI will not replace accountants. It will not replace us. It cannot replace us. Even if I listen to this 10 or 20 years from now, my stance is the same.
Where AI Can Support the Accounting Profession
There is a lot AI can do for accounting professionals. If we think about accounting as a hub-and-spoke function, there are many areas where AI can assist: audit, internal controls, general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, controllership, payroll, treasury, governance, SOPs, job aids, and supplemental analysis.
AI can help support work that an accountant has already done, but it cannot replace the expertise, judgment, and professional standards behind that work.
Trust, Credibility, and Professional Judgment
I attended a CPE event recently where Jim Martin said that CPAs are among the most trusted professionals. That trust matters. The public relies on our information, expertise, professional judgment, and recommendations.
Accounting evolves, and those of us in the profession continue to study, adapt, and apply judgment based on experience. AI cannot replace that.
Nearly every AI tool includes some form of disclaimer that it can make mistakes and that users must verify the information. Verification, credible data, and reliable information are foundational to accounting. We tell the story of the business, and we often have insight into nearly every part of a company.
Accounting Serves Internal Customers
When supply chain wants to adopt new technology, they often come to accounting to understand the budget, ROI, and business case. When departmental owners notice unusual activity in their profit and loss statements, they depend on accounting to explain what happened.
Accounting teams serve internal customers: departments, leadership, stakeholders, and colleagues above, below, and across the organization. That work requires human judgment, communication, and context.
AI Needs Better Inputs to Produce Better Outputs
AI can be generative, but to get meaningful output, users must give it meaningful context. If you ask AI to create a financial statement, it will need more information: the type of company, the format, whether it should be a single-step or multi-step income statement, and the purpose of the financial statements.
The more context you provide, the better your outcome will be. Generic prompts produce generic outputs.
The Risk of Generic AI Content
I started noticing this on social media. On different platforms, I saw different accounts posting the exact same captions. It appeared that people were asking AI for generic posts about wellness, motivation, or inspiration without giving it enough context to distinguish their content from everyone else’s.
That is when AI-generated content becomes obvious. Certain words, tones, grammar patterns, and formatting choices can signal that the content came directly from AI with little original thought or refinement.
AI Can Complement, Not Replace, Accounting Work
AI can complement many aspects of the profession, including transactional work, journal entries, report creation, and system navigation. I would like to see more ERP systems, including Oracle NetSuite and Microsoft Dynamics 365, continue expanding AI capabilities for finding information, creating reports, and improving workflows.
At the same time, we must keep a clear line of demarcation between work AI can support and work that still requires the judgment, experience, and expertise of an accountant or CPA.
Confidentiality and Client Data
As a CPA, I work with confidential data. My firm and many others maintain tight guardrails around privacy, confidentiality, and protection of client information. I am not comfortable putting client information, financial statements, or sensitive details into tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or other AI platforms.
AI tools can make mistakes. They can hallucinate. Knowing that, I will likely never be comfortable placing client data into those systems.
My firm does have policies around AI and social media usage. We use prompts to support data gathering and planning across services such as tax preparation, advisory, NIL and taxes, and general consulting. However, those tools do not receive client-specific confidential information.
Why Data Privacy Matters
Our firm serves many types of clients, including NIL athletes, high school and collegiate athletes, professional athletes, tax clients, private firms, family offices, high-net-worth individuals, ultra-high-net-worth individuals, founders, and small business owners.
We do not want that information touching AI systems. I am also not comfortable connecting tax applications, email, ERP systems, or bill payment systems to AI tools simply because integrations exist. I value client trust and data protection too much to compromise that boundary.
Supplemental AI Versus Generative AI
I like to think of AI as supplemental AI rather than generative AI. You cannot rely on AI to be your brain. You still have to know what you are doing, and you still have to develop and exercise critical thinking skills.
That concern extends beyond accounting. Children are growing up in an era where homework, lesson plans, speeches, and written content can be generated by AI. But people still need to use their own thinking, judgment, and originality.
Closing Thought
AI will not replace accountants. It can support the profession, but it cannot replace the expertise, judgment, confidentiality, client service, and critical thinking that accountants and CPAs provide.
Resources and Services Mentioned

Key Takeaway
AI can assist accountants, but it cannot replace the human judgment, professional credibility, confidentiality, and strategic thinking that define high-quality accounting work.
