Hey, Julian & Cesc here and welcome to
another exciting episode of Padel Smash
Academy, and today we have Patrick and
Conor Shields from Fromuth Racquet Sports.
We are all Things Padel.
Hey guys, welcome to the show.
Thank you for this.
Thank you.
Why don't you talk to me a little
bit about Fouth and what they do?
Fouth is a, a racket sports distributor.
Uh, it's been in business
for over 50 years.
And what we do is we supply pro shops
at clubs because usually they're
so small that they can't have open
accounts with Wilson Balot, Adidas,
Nike, and um, so they come to us.
We're kind of like a middleman for that.
We're their warehouse,
right?
So this is a great
alternative to trying to get.
You know, individual accounts from
all these different brands, right?
Correct.
And correct.
So you guys do mostly B2B, um, and, and so
that they can profit but not have, let's
say the stock of all these rackets right?
In the club?
Correct.
From with racket sports is 100% A B2B.
You basically have to set up an account
with us and have a legitimate pro
shop, so we don't go to the end user.
We are, uh, strictly wholesale.
And once you get a password protected
account, then you get into the
website with the wholesale pricing.
And one of the things that we make sure
we do is when we get an order from a club,
it ships that day because service, you
know when, when you're a player and you
go to your local pro and pro shop and you
want something, you want it, then Yeah.
You know, you're used to being
able to grab something off the
shelf and going to play with it.
So.
We get it out right away so that it
gets into the customer's hand, the end
user's hand as quickly as possible.
Wow, that's great.
And so you're focused
mostly on, on clubs, right?
Yes, sir. Clubs.
And, and can you talk about some
of the brands you guys have?
Our biggest brands in the footwear are,
uh, Nike and Adidas, Babylon, k Swiss.
Asics.
Um, asics is a hot brand right now.
On the footwear?
Yes.
On the footwear side.
Yeah.
We
carry over 80 brands.
Okay.
Um, so all the major tennis racket
brands, major tennis apparel brands.
It was a tennis business, now
it's a racket sports business.
Okay.
So,
so, but you, you carry
from apparel, accessories.
Yes.
Uh, rackets, uh.
So, nets, windscreens,
vibration, dampeners.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
So you're
the one stop shop for any racket sports?
Yes.
Yeah, for Padel, pickle and tennis.
Yes.
Squash.
Squash too.
Yeah.
Um,
you know,
racketball
when it was,
when racketball.
Mm-hmm.
So, so Patrick, tell us a little bit,
I mean, you've been in the business
for, you know, 30 plus years or so.
How do you see the evolution of,
I mean, you guys been 10 centric
for, for so many decades, you know.
How did you guys see now the
evolution of, of these new sports,
the pickleball,
uh, Padel and all that?
It's,
it's a great question and something
that we're, we're very excited about
because for, you know, up until
about five years ago, we used to say
that we are in the tennis business.
Yeah.
And now we say we're in
the racket sports business.
So when the tennis boom, you know, hit 30,
40 years ago, all these clubs were built.
And since then.
There hasn't been that much investment
in the infrastructure of racket
sports and now with padell and, and
pickleball, um, there's just been a
lot of money flowing into new clubs.
And so even if you're a tennis club
and you were kind of limping along
over the last couple decades, now
you might take two tennis courts
and put in some Patel courts and
now you're a different business.
Yeah.
So it's really rejuvenated.
Not it's rejuvenated old clubs as
well as, you know, new clubs coming
in that you know, are just really.
Exciting.
And, and I I always say racket
sports are having a moment.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know, they're really
everybody.
You can go somewhere and look
at a crowd and, and everybody's
playing some racket sport.
Yeah.
Right.
Couldn't say that.
I, I, I think that, that, that hybrid
format, it especially, I mean, if you
go to Northeast, you have all these
commercial clubs, you know what I mean?
They've been around for,
since the seventies.
Mm-hmm.
And they've been always struggling, you
know, you always have one or two chords
pretty much that nobody wants to use.
And now they're adding all
these other R board and now.
They're creating one or two different,
uh, sources of, of revenue for
the club, which I think is great.
So how do you guys fill that gap
and as a company and, and what are
you guys doing to fill that gap?
I'll let you answer that.
Yeah.
So, um, we are, you know, diving into
getting pickled Padels and padel
rackets and padel shoes, like we're now
at a place where we're comfortable and.
We can supply a full padel shop
with everything that they need.
Um, so we want to mimic what we've done
and what he's done in tennis for 35
plus years into Padel and into pickle.
Um, and we believe we can
get there, you know, as these
sports really continue to grow.
And one other thing
that's really drives us.
Because we are addicted to pi.
Oh yeah.
We love it.
Join the club, man.
Join the club.
It's
on.
And um, you know, we we're
going out as a family.
We're playing a little father son stuff.
Yeah.
And, um, so that's kind of, you
know, it's fun when you go to work
every day and you can't wait to
see the new rackets coming out.
Yeah.
And
so, so big, big, big question.
Which racket sport do you like the most?
Al? Oh, a hundred percent.
I tell everybody that right now.
Oh, it's mo It's the most interesting.
Okay.
It's the mo It's, it's just,
you know, what, what you, you
have to stay focused mentally.
Um, you know, the points
are in the longest.
Yeah.
Right.
It's not about power, it's about,
it's about absorbing that power
and then just being crafty and, you
know, he can fly all over the court.
Yeah.
I can't, so.
Um, I have to be more crafty than your
skill.
You know what I'm saying?
Your titas and love.
Yeah.
Um, and, and you.
It's about keeping the ball in play.
Yeah.
Not
hitting winners.
Yeah.
Right, right, right.
So patient, I, I love what I hear from
you guys from, from, I've been also
before in the tennis, uh, business
and I, I, I've been buying things from
you guys for, for, for many years.
And I love your, the alliances
that you did in, in, in the tennis
world, you know, with the USDA,
the U-S-B-T-A back in the day.
I don't know if you still do, but, uh, and
I think those are very strategic and now.
The train start picking up speed with,
with Padel, you know what I mean?
It's, it's, you know, this is a year.
20, 25 is a year because it's
gonna, whoever jumps on it is gonna,
you know, enjoy the, the most.
Uh, and I, and I love what I
hear from you guys, that you
guys see it, where it's going.
I mean, it's not there yet, but
it's gonna picking up speed.
Mm-hmm.
Because what, for what you see.
In the rest of the world.
I mean, it's just crazy.
It's mind blowing.
I mean, we talked to a
lot
of vendors, a lot of
distributors.
Yes.
And they're getting orders.
Big orders.
Big orders of courts.
Yeah.
Big orders of this.
But you talk to investors, there's clubs
opening up here, they're all over USS A
and it's like, wow, this is like you said,
2025, you're gonna see a lot of movement.
And I
think you guys, for what, when,
when we talk to new club owners,
uh, they need guidance and.
You know, after spending millions or you
know, a lot of money on opening a club
and all that, they don't want to have
that expense of buying, you know, 20,
$30,000 worth of Wilson or, or, or head or
whatever in, in only racks that they don't
even know what the bid is, how it works.
Mm-hmm.
So I think you, you guys coming in where
they can purchase one or two rockets.
And see if it sells
and then purchase more.
Right.
I think that gap is gonna be crucial
for the growth of the sport in general.
You know?
A hundred
percent.
Yeah.
'cause I think most, most, uh, you
know, clubs, they go in thinking
this could be a vertical, you know?
Yeah.
And at the end of the day, they
don't have a whole department
to, you know, sales staff, uh, so
sales team to sell these products.
Correct.
And then they individually
have to go to each one of these
continents, and sometimes there's
a minimum order, you know?
And which ones do you get?
Right, right.
I mean, it's like you don't
know which ones they get.
You know, you get these and then
somebody comes in, I want that one.
It's like, ah, you know?
Yeah.
And it sits there and you got 10,
$20,000 just sitting there, uh, where you
could use it, something else, you know?
And a lot of people's, a
hundred percent correct.
And a lot of people come in and.
They'll buy it, you know, uh, they'll
look at a racket and they like it,
and then they'll go home, do some
research and find it 20% cheaper
or 10% cheaper somewhere else.
Buy somewhere.
And every club demographic
is different, right.
Every pro shop's different.
Right.
So from a can allow you to really
like, get off your feet and do that
trial and error process with different
brands and not take on as much risk.
Right.
Right.
So tell us, I mean, out of, uh, 40
plus thousand viewers and listeners.
I'm a club owner.
A lot of our listeners and
viewers are club owners, right?
Or they wanna open a club,
which we get that a lot.
So now, what is the process, me as
a new club owner to go through Mout?
You know, you said open an account.
Mm-hmm.
And then
how does
it work?
Yeah, so there's a pretty simple
application you fill out online.
You know, we have an approval
process within our team.
Um, once you get approved,
you get an account, you log
in your account, and then.
Uh, we have a website that's
very easy and up to date to use.
It's almost like a direct to consumer
website where, you know, you see your
pricing at wholesale if you're a club,
and then what you can sell it for.
Okay.
Right under that.
So,
so what's the, what's the average
margin that most, uh, clubs can see?
They would, would,
uh, a club using us would, uh, pay about
10% more, excuse me, 10% more using us.
Then going direct.
That's, so we get, we get
discounts from the manufacturers.
Okay.
So we make our margin, we,
we run it on a tight margin.
Yeah.
And we make our margin on,
partly on the buy side and,
uh, partly on the south side.
Okay.
So what's important to understand is
that the reason there has to be an
application process here is because
we have to protect the dis the
integrity of the distribution network.
So if bolt panels, you know, sells to us.
Uh, they wanna make sure that we're
selling to pro shops, not some
guy in apartment three B. Yeah,
yeah, yeah.
You know what
I mean?
Sure.
So you have to, you know, you have to
qualify the buyers and the pro shops.
If they're a legitimate business, then.
Then we can be open for business.
Right.
So they need a resale tax certificate.
They need how, how do, how do,
how do they prove to, to, from off
that they're a legitimate business?
It's, it's basically
you can send us a picture of your shop.
Okay.
And the club.
You can tell us about the club.
It's not that complicated.
Yeah.
To articles of organization,
you know?
Mm-hmm.
Just resale certificate sales.
You can give us your shipping
address and we can look it up online.
Gotcha.
So, um, okay.
Do you guys do, uh, like consignment
or anything else with clubs or is
it just strictly they purchase it,
they have it and, and then they sell?
Yeah, that's generally what it is.
Okay.
They just purchase and there's,
again, there's no minimum orders.
You know, pro shops and pro shop
owners have to be careful, like
you said, that they don't get.
Too over inventoried.
Right.
They need that cash flow primarily
for marketing when they open a club.
Yeah, right.
Just to, to decoration and,
I mean, show it like it's
a real power.
Yeah.
Did you guys help them with that too?
Like a consulting, somebody can call
and say, I want to get like, you
know, 12 records, what should I get?
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Oh yeah.
That's, that's another.
Piece of the puzzle there where, you
know, our customer service team gets
educated from those brands and really
knows what they're talking about.
Oh, so they watch the reviews.
That means you the racket.
Yeah, it's true.
Check the top five.
That's, that's the racket.
Well, it's a tough thing to keep
up with because new products
keep coming out every year.
Every year, yeah.
And, and the American market it, it's.
They're so eager to, for knowledge and,
and what will be because, uh, one thing
is to spend a couple hundred dollars
for a bubble racket, tennis racket.
You know, these ones, they
go for 3, 4, 500 bucks.
You know what I mean?
It, it's a hefty sum that
mm-hmm.
Before I make that purchase, I wanna
have really, which one is it and, and
who are the experts you, you know?
Mm-hmm.
That's why it's important for
a club to have a demo program.
Yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
And when you talk about somebody,
um, you know, trying to rack it
and then going home and getting it
cheaper on Amazon or whatever, it's
important for that club to offer.
That's a great point.
You know?
This a program where it
incentivizes the mm-hmm.
The end user to then buy from them.
So do you guys have demo
records that they can purchase?
Yes.
Um,
we, we offer that online.
And then for some of the company
attached to our warehouse is a store.
Okay.
Where we do, you know, maybe
$20, $10 to demo a racket.
Right, exactly.
And then you take that
off the original price.
So that's, you ship
it to
them.
That's a good idea.
Uh, yes.
So let's say I'm in Arizona and
you ship it from the northeast
to Arizona, there's the racket,
and then send it back to you, or,
uh, so it depends.
A, as a wholesaler it depends on the brand
and what we can offer online through.
Okay.
Usually the way we do it is if
somebody, if a shop buys, wants to
buy, you know, half a dozen Padels,
we throw in a, a demo of that Padel.
Okay.
Nice to help them sell it.
Okay.
Smart.
And, um, so, you know, we just, we
have people that are just working.
With our customers on different
formulas in that regard all the time.
And another thing I was, I forgot
to mention is that if your club
and you end up buying 10, $20,000
rackets and they're 2024 models.
And, you know, now 2025 comes, right?
And they're asking, Hey,
do you have the new model?
And you're like, no.
'cause they still have 10,
$20,000 worth of old models.
Mm-hmm.
I can get rid of.
Oh yeah.
And I can't even buy the new 2020 fives.
You know?
So it, it, it's a, you know, it's a,
like I said, it's a good alternative,
um, uh, for, you know, something
like for a month to come in and,
and supply you with the rackets.
For sure.
Yeah.
And that's, so it's, sorry, go ahead.
That's something that.
I see more in Padel and pickleball
than I do in the tennis market.
Okay.
With, you know, so many new lines every
year that it's hard to really keep up.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's true.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And so, so many new
companies coming up mm-hmm.
Padel's like, ah, how
do you vet them out?
Are they really a, you know, a company
or are they just going and getting like
a. Uh, a mold from China that everybody
uses and throwing it up, put their name
on it, you know, who's done the real RD.
So we get rackets sent to us all the
time, and we have to kind of weed
them out and see what, you know, which
one's legitimate, which ones are,
you know, and the, and then the
manufacturers, the Poel companies,
the Tim companies, they don't
want to ship one racket to cloud
to a, they want a big order.
Sure.
Or that's why a lot of times
they'll say, if it's a smaller
order, why don't you go use Mout?
Right.
Um, and, uh, but one of the things
that's happening in, in Padella, I
think is that we can't get, we can't get
enough products to keep the pipeline,
you know, it's growing so fast.
Really interesting.
And the manufacturers are having
trouble keeping up with the US market.
Yeah.
A lot of 'em are not in this country.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Right.
Most of them.
So that's why we're trying to place
big orders and have that inventory.
That we can share.
It's smart.
I do see that.
It's hard to predict for them right now.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We've done a couple in, uh,
reviews on rackets that we love
and boom, they sell out here.
Mm-hmm.
And then we go back to the, you
know, the, the, the distributor and
they're, they're out, you know, and
maybe they didn't find it our, our
e-commerce, but they went all to the
other places and then it's just out.
Yeah.
And they didn't anticipate how
well that racket was going to do.
Right.
So what is your number one selling
brand or, or racket right now?
Um, Adele Racket.
It would be Adidas.
Really?
Um, we've carried them longer than any
other brand because, you know, we've had
the relationship with them for so long.
Um, we do a lot of tennis
business with them.
That's all rugged sports,
correct?
Correct.
Correct.
Yes.
Um, how about just rap pedal?
For
Padel
it.
Same.
Yeah, just for Padels,
Adidas, I'm saying.
Oh wow.
Um, do you see more of like the Adidas,
the Bt Wilsons selling the moss?
'cause that's what yeah.
Americans are familiar with.
Yeah.
Um, those with our customer base, I
would say the tennis brands shine bright.
Um, but then, you know, as you become
more familiar with the sport, right.
You know, we have considered ourself a
legitimate contender when we got the.
Padel specific brands, so Bowl
Knox, things like that bring on.
Then you know, people started
taking us seriously in a sport.
I think
once people start watching the
sport and they seeing like 20% of.
25% of the people are using Bull Padel.
Yeah.
Like Ma, lemme check that out.
No more player uses Knox.
You know?
Right.
Lemme check that out.
Yeah.
No, we're
um, in discussions with Bull Patel
right now to be a US distributor
and we hope we can work some of the
out with them because they have a
lot of potential in the US market.
Oh, oh yeah.
And they haven't been
able to take advantage
of that.
And, and the line of products
they have is tremendous.
Yeah.
Yeah.
They put into it,
their presence is phenomenal.
Their players that play with
it, I mean, product's great.
It.
Doesn't break.
Yeah.
It is like the Wilson of Padel.
Yes.
You know what I mean?
In the tennis world, you know what I mean?
They're like every solid,
strong well run company.
Yeah.
Do The other thing I wanted to
say about, uh, the, the sport
of pinel is it's, it's a scene.
People dress up to play pinel.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And it's, and so now you have,
you can do apparel sales.
Yeah.
Yeah.
If you, if you do it right, a lot of
times in, in tennis shops, they're
done, unless it's like a club that
sells all whites and they just have.
The white tops and the white
bottoms with their club logo.
Mm-hmm.
You know, they can sell those
all day long at full margin.
Yeah.
Um, I think, I think Pinnell is helping,
uh, rejuvenate the apparel setup.
Yes.
Sports and, and, and, and for you guys
probably, I don't know if you know
about it, but, uh, Patel, uh, Padel
is becoming what tennis was in the
seventies and eighties, early eighties.
Yeah.
The lead sport.
Mm-hmm.
The cool sport.
Mm-hmm.
You know, the, the, the sport that
all my cool friends are playing.
Right.
So, and it's trendy.
And it is trendy and, and they want
to spend the money in the clothing
because I want to look good.
Right.
You know what I mean?
It's, it's, it's out there right now.
So it's, it is, it's.
But I always tell everybody that
it's, it's following the same
evolution of tennis, what it was
here in the seventies, eighties.
You're
so right
with the, the fillas and the
less and the Sergio bikinis,
you
know?
Oh my God.
Italian memory.
That was
my time.
I love, that was my time playing.
I love that, that era Love that
era Killed shirt years old.
Yeah.
On a lease shirt, you know, beyond
work and all that.
Right, right.
And it's, it's, it's
falling the same trend.
You know what I mean?
Mm-hmm.
And now it, it's amazing.
And I, and we've been there that.
Now all the wealthiest people
in the United States, they're
not putting tennis courts or
pickleball courts in their houses.
Right.
They're putting Padel courts.
Right.
Because it's the coolest thing.
Right.
And not only that, they're
putting seating areas.
Yeah.
Like when you see these new pinel
clubs going on, like the one we're
here right now, this the common areas.
Mm-hmm.
Are they invest in them.
Yeah.
And it encourages people to hang out.
Yeah.
And you see 'em bringing
bottles of wine Yeah.
And coolers.
Yeah.
It's just, like I said, it's a
scene and it's really, it's really
cool to be a part of.
Yeah.
It's, it's so, so from something that
every single club needs right away.
Balls.
Do you guys say pedal balls?
Tons.
Okay.
What, what's your number
one selling vaults?
The Wilson Premier.
The Wilson Premier?
Yeah.
Well, and how much does a box go for?
Um,
the markup is the same
thing, like 10% up or, yeah.
Yeah.
Mm-hmm.
I'd have
to look that
up.
But yeah, that, and we do a lot of
things like, you know, 10 in ones.
Okay.
You buy 10, you get a case free.
Mm-hmm.
And then you go free
shipping and all that.
And we got so many calls from in
the tennis side of things are, are.
Common order is, oh my gosh, I
have a tournament this Friday and
I forgot to order tennis balls.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
And I can't get 'em from Wilson.
Yeah.
And we can ship 'em out that day.
And
well, one of the things that is happening
right now that going back to what you you
guys said is that, uh, there is not enough
fraud to keep on the, on the growth.
You know what I mean?
And, and because everything is coming
from China, Europe, or whatever.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
It takes forever to get here.
Yeah.
So you have to really.
Even with bolts, uh, at the beginning of
the, in January, February, I mean there
was this, you know, there were no bolts.
Mm-hmm.
No Padel balls.
I mean, every club was like, right now
with X in the supermarket, everybody's
crazy buying, but they were, you know,
overstocking yourself with bolts.
Because me as a club owner, without
balls, I don't have a business.
Right.
Period.
Done.
I'm done.
Right.
You know, so, and the ball
business is gonna be huge.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
And it
is already
huge.
Yeah.
I got a call.
The week of Reserve Cup from Reserve
really saying, we don't have enough balls.
How fast can you do this?
Yeah, yeah.
Um, and we sat 'em down the next day.
But yeah, balls are,
yeah, it's a nice entry right now.
I'd be, I'd be stocking up on balls
simply because of the tariffs as well.
Yeah.
Wakes except,
well,
that's, that's a good one too.
Yeah, that's
right.
Yeah.
So the price is gonna
go up and all that, so.
Mm-hmm.
Uh, but, but, but, so now let's
talk about something exciting
where you find out through.
I don't know.
Connections Underground Padel business.
Right.
The rumors.
The rumors.
Your partnership with Hero Star.
Yes.
Let's talk about that.
Exciting news.
Yeah.
So that's been great for us.
Um, we actually met Lucio, the
CEO and founder, um, last year.
And he was looking for a US distributor,
got recommended, um, to work with, and
he reached out and it's been great.
You know, they're.
Toto and what he does for that brand.
And from trick shots to uh.
He is like the ultimate
entertainer on court.
He's a run video Padel.
Um, that's been a
phenomenal seller for us.
Yeah.
We can't keep enough aliens in stock.
Yeah.
So do you have the new 2025 ones?
It should be getting two from
us either today or Monday.
Alright.
Some
reserves, some for us.
Yeah.
Yeah, absolutely.
Um, do you ever do review?
Of course we do.
That, that's a brand that we love.
I, I think, uh, besides that being,
they, they put their, you know,
researcher and development there.
Yeah.
It's a great looking racket.
And, and, uh,
they listen to their audience.
Yeah, absolutely.
You know, they were like, this, this
racket is so difficult to play with, so
it may want similar someone, I think it's
gonna be more easier to play with mm-hmm.
On inter intermediate and,
uh, and high intermediate
people.
So I think it's gonna be great.
And the price point, um, yes.
Not too complex of a line, so
it's a little Right, right.
Uh, easier and, um, it's good looking.
It is great looking.
There's, there's a cool racket,
there's there's style to it, for sure.
And yeah, like back to
his point about just.
The Padel world and the style and ev
it's, it's tied into fashion very heavily.
Yeah.
It, it's European.
Yeah.
And let's face it, European
Europe leads us in fashion.
Right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And in Padel too.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's for sure.
Yeah,
I could say that.
Yeah.
Exciting.
Exciting.
Well, I mean, it's.
It's, are you guys gonna go to,
you guys gonna be at record X?
Mm-hmm.
Yes.
Premier, are you guys gonna
go to the pre uh, premiere?
Yes.
Be
there tonight and tomorrow night.
It's a good weekend to be in
Miami.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's any better?
You guys want, uh, talk about
anything else to our, to
audience that we may have missed
other than we're just, we're authentic.
I would say, you know, if
there's one thing I wanted to,
I would, we'd love the sport.
We love all racket, sports, and, uh.
Um, we love taking care of customers too.
Yeah.
We have a lot of pride in, in what we do.
We have people that are, that
are, uh, that work for us that,
um, they are grandparents now.
Their kids work for us and now
their grandchildren work for us.
You're kidding me.
I love it.
That's amazing.
Um, a lot of times they just
start in the warehouse, then
they get to the retail store.
We have a store attached to our warehouse,
and then they move up to customer service.
And by the time they get there.
They know how many, how many of a
certain thing fit in a box and how you
gonna ship it the most efficiently.
Yeah.
And, um, so we, we, uh, we really
enjoy the business and, uh, and
the next generation is here.
Nice.
And so that's kind of exciting for me.
That's great.
That's great.
And, uh,
and, and they're having fun.
And it is gonna be more very exciting
with this new growth of, of all new
racket, sports, you know what I mean?
It's, mm-hmm.
It's been only tennis for so
many decades and now it's gonna
be, it's super, super exciting.
I mean, you know, I'm Thank you for
being part of this journey because
we are in it too and, and we're here
to work together to make this, yeah.
Thank you guys.
Sport, you know, better and
better every day here in the us.
Yeah, you guys do a great job.
It's been awesome.
A good
follow.
Thanks man.
