Hol+ S08E01 - Jim Curtis
[00:00:00] Jim Curtis: I believe that with emotional regulation you can reduce your pain. For many years I couldn't walk more than [00:00:05] three blocks. There was, it was always painful- Mm-hmm ... pain in my ankles, and that pain is gone, [00:00:10] and most of it's because of emotional regulation. If we are practicing emotional [00:00:15] regulation and we release some of the worry and the fear, then that [00:00:20] often creates a different chemical makeup in our body.
[00:00:22] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:00:22] Jim Curtis: And people experience less pain, [00:00:25] people experience more ease in their joints, and for me, it helped me walk [00:00:30] better.
[00:00:30] Dr. Taz: Oh, wow. Jim Curtis is an author, a speaker, and coach whose [00:00:35] work centers on helping people break free from limiting patterns and [00:00:40] reconnect with what's possible in their lives. Why are we having such a problem with this right [00:00:45] now?
[00:00:45] Jim Curtis: I think because we have so much information. We weren't meant to [00:00:50] have all the world's information at our fingertips every minute. We lived in small [00:00:55] villages of 100 people- Yeah ... and in our tribe we kind of just kept things going [00:01:00] copacetic. And now that we have all this information of every human all over the [00:01:05] world all at once, that it just causes dysregulation.
[00:01:08] Dr. Taz: He is known for helping [00:01:10] audiences and clients explore the intersection of mindset, emotional [00:01:15] patterns, stress, and personal growth while making transformational ideas feel [00:01:20] accessible and applicable in everyday life. Please join me in welcoming Jim to the show. This [00:01:25] episode is sponsored by Hol Plus, a holistic health platform built around [00:01:30] education, personalization, and integrative care.

[00:02:05] Dr. Taz: I'm super honored to have you here today. Uh, we have followed your work and a lot [00:02:10] of your teachings and your writings, and I think you touch on something that I'm [00:02:15] still trying really hard to put my finger on and to understand more deeply, and that is [00:02:20] this sort of field or this realm of where healing stops [00:02:25] happening and where I know healing is actually possible.
[00:02:27] Jim Curtis: Mm-hmm.
[00:02:28] Dr. Taz: Because people are doing [00:02:30] all the things, right? They're doing everything on a treatment plan. They're biohacking. They're [00:02:35] gaming the data. They're doing the lab work. They're doing all the stuff, but they're not able to push through for [00:02:40] some reason to kind of what- whatever outcome they're seeking, whether it's getting better [00:02:45] physically, whether it's performing better.
[00:02:47] Dr. Taz: You know, no matter what it is, there's still something [00:02:50] blocking them. And the longer I've done this, I'm like, "There's another layer." [00:02:55] And we're not taught that other layer- Mm ... in medical school, right? Right. Or residency. [00:03:00] And I feel like the future of medicine relies on us understanding [00:03:05] this other layer, whatever we wanna call it- Mm-hmm
[00:03:07] Dr. Taz: and how it then in turn impacts the rest of our [00:03:10] health.
[00:03:10] Jim Curtis: Right.
[00:03:10] Dr. Taz: And I know you have lived in this field, in this space. Yeah. I also [00:03:15] know that you have a very diverse medical background.
[00:03:17] Jim Curtis: Mm-hmm.
[00:03:18] Dr. Taz: So I wanna jump [00:03:20] into it, into- Okay, let's jump in ... possibility-
[00:03:22] Jim Curtis: Right ...
[00:03:23] Dr. Taz: and the subconscious- [00:03:25] Yeah ... and how that connects back to who we are as people.
[00:03:28] Jim Curtis: Hmm, great. That's my favorite [00:03:30] topic, so
[00:03:30] Dr. Taz: let's jump. Let's go for it. So how did you even find out about this stuff? Why are you even interested [00:03:35] in this stuff? You've been at WebMD. You were... We were just talking. Yeah. You've been at the IIN- [00:03:40] Yeah ... y- which is the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. Mm-hmm. You've been at Everyday Health.
[00:03:44] Dr. Taz: I remember- Yeah ... [00:03:45] contributing to some of their content. So you've been in these very medical heavy spaces. From the beginning. [00:03:50] Right? Evidence-based- Yeah ... medical heavy spaces.
[00:03:52] Jim Curtis: Right.
[00:03:53] Dr. Taz: Why are we talking about the [00:03:55] subconscious now?
[00:03:56] Jim Curtis: Because I, what I've found with my thousands of patients and with my own [00:04:00] physical health is that the subconscious is more powerful than any pill, any, [00:04:05] any, any nutrition plan.
[00:04:07] Jim Curtis: Um, and we even find that when someone [00:04:10] with authority, and we were just talking about your hypno- hypnosis story- Right ... right?
[00:04:14] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:04:14] Jim Curtis: [00:04:15] Um, it doesn't take much, that when someone with authority tells you something, [00:04:20] if you believe it, it becomes true.
[00:04:22] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:04:22] Jim Curtis: That's why it's so important for [00:04:25] doctors when they're giving out prognosises or diagnosises that they, um, [00:04:30] position things differently.
[00:04:31] Jim Curtis: Because what they tell to the patient, they believe and [00:04:35] manifest. And same with a placebo. Um, we make things true [00:04:40] within our body, and that's our subconscious mind.
[00:04:42] Dr. Taz: So if, if someone is telling you something, and [00:04:45] you respect them-
[00:04:46] Jim Curtis: Mm-hmm ...
[00:04:46] Dr. Taz: and you're holding them up on a pedestal-
[00:04:48] Jim Curtis: Yeah ...
[00:04:48] Dr. Taz: you are more [00:04:50] likely to believe what they're gonna say- Right
[00:04:52] Dr. Taz: and in turn have an outcome. Is that [00:04:55] sort of why people who are in positions of power have to be aware of that, right? They- [00:05:00] Absolutely ... we have to be aware of the fact that we can lead people down different roads.
[00:05:03] Jim Curtis: Yes, absolutely. And, and [00:05:05] that's the main tenet of hypnosis as well. You have to position authority [00:05:10] so that the subconscious mind of the other person, the client, the patient, whomever, will take [00:05:15] a suggestion And basically our whole lives are suggestions.
[00:05:18] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:05:19] Jim Curtis: We [00:05:20] are living within a suggestible state, especially if we're scrolling on social media and we put ourselves [00:05:25] into a, a, a trance with lights and bings and bongs already, that we- Wait, is
[00:05:29] Dr. Taz: that hypnosis, [00:05:30] by the way? Yeah. If we're just doing that- Yes ... if we're doom scrolling, is hypnosis ...
[00:05:32] Jim Curtis: yes, yes, that's what people say.
[00:05:34] Jim Curtis: Right. Can, can I be [00:05:35] hypnotized? It's like if you're on social media, you're hypnotizing yourself all day long. You're putting y- yourself into a [00:05:40] suggestible state, and then you're just taking suggestions from either the news or the [00:05:45] ads or whatever you see. But driving long distances also puts you in a state, right?
[00:05:49] Jim Curtis: Mm. Mm-hmm. And [00:05:50] many things that we do put us in a theta state that is basically hypnosis. [00:05:55] But, um, so what I've found with my own physical health and [00:06:00] with thousands of patients that I work with is that if they can believe an [00:06:05] outcome, see it, feel it, believe it, internalize it, then that [00:06:10] outcome often happens.
[00:06:11] Dr. Taz: How is that different from, again, not to use social media, but how is that [00:06:15] different from manifestation? People are like, "I'm gonna manifest this. I'm gonna write my [00:06:20] affirmations." Right. "I'm gonna do a vision board." How is this different, or is [00:06:25] it not? Mm. Is, are we talking about the same thing? Is there any difference between what you're talking about [00:06:30] and some of what we've seen floating around in terms of culture and social media [00:06:35] and some of those- Yeah
[00:06:35] Dr. Taz: type of things?
[00:06:36] Jim Curtis: I think it's all manifestation. I think manifestation was a real actual word that's in [00:06:40] the dictionary, and you look, and it's to create something, right? To make something, um, [00:06:45] manifest. And I think then it became in the spiritual world where it became a little woo-woo. Mm-hmm. And it's like [00:06:50] something out here, I'm gonna use the magic of this thing called the universe, and I'm gonna manifest something.
[00:06:54] Jim Curtis: But [00:06:55] I believe that it's all making something happen, making an outcome happen that you want. So [00:07:00] we're manifesting on a daily basis. It doesn't have to be this [00:07:05] obscure- Procedure ... yeah, right. It doesn't have to be this
[00:07:07] Dr. Taz: obscure
[00:07:08] Jim Curtis: thing.
[00:07:08] Dr. Taz: Procedure, right? It- Let me clear the [00:07:10] energy.
[00:07:10] Jim Curtis: Yeah.
[00:07:10] Dr. Taz: Let me clear my counter.
[00:07:11] Jim Curtis: Right.
[00:07:11] Dr. Taz: No, that's not it,
[00:07:12] Jim Curtis: right? Right. Let's get some candles and, and-
[00:07:13] Dr. Taz: Right. Exactly ...
[00:07:14] Jim Curtis: and [00:07:15] some crystals.
[00:07:15] Dr. Taz: My daughter does this, by the way. She's 17, 18 years old, and I'm, like, knocking on the door trying to get her to do something. She says, [00:07:20] "I'm manifesting right now, Mom. Go away."
[00:07:23] Jim Curtis: You know? So- Yeah. The, the funny thing is, is I'm not [00:07:25] making fun of the candles- Yeah
[00:07:25] Jim Curtis: and the crystals- Right ... and the writing and all that stuff. Right. Because if that's what you need to train your brain [00:07:30] and your- Right ... energy and your, your subconscious to go get, then- Do it. Yeah. [00:07:35] It works.
[00:07:35] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:07:35] Jim Curtis: Right? Anything, you know, I always say that we can eat food with [00:07:40] chopsticks or with our hands or with a fork and knife or wh- just as long as you get it into your belly, [00:07:45] and that's the same with manifestation.
[00:07:46] Dr. Taz: Same with manifestation. Now, how did you fall into this [00:07:50] field to begin with? Mm-hmm. Because again, you were in these very more, I would call them more academic [00:07:55] or more science-based or evidence-based driven- Yeah ... fields of medicine, right? How did you fall [00:08:00] into the sub- the realm of the subconscious, understanding the power?
[00:08:03] Dr. Taz: Your newest book is The Book [00:08:05] of Possibility- That's right ... which talks a lot about this.
[00:08:07] Jim Curtis: Yep.
[00:08:07] Dr. Taz: You know, tell us a little bit about your background and your story.
[00:08:09] Jim Curtis: [00:08:10] Well, I was a trader on Wall Street.
[00:08:11] Dr. Taz: Oh, okay.
[00:08:12] Jim Curtis: And-
[00:08:12] Dr. Taz: Enough said. So. That
[00:08:14] Jim Curtis: was a difficult [00:08:15] role. Yes. And- But I traded these big, uh, health technology companies-
[00:08:17] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:08:17] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm ...
[00:08:18] Jim Curtis: and before they were what [00:08:20] they were. Mm-hmm. So, um, and then I would go to early stage companies and help [00:08:25] bring them, uh, as ex- as an executive there into what they became, and they [00:08:30] became Everyday Health and, well, WebMD, and then Everyday Health, and then Health Central- Right ... and all [00:08:35] those. But I was really driven by my own illness, so I was at 20 years [00:08:40] old, um, diagnosed with a lesion on my spine.
[00:08:43] Jim Curtis: It didn't have, [00:08:45] uh, a diagnosis aside from it's a transverse myelitis something. Mm-hmm. [00:08:50] Didn't know how it created- Mm-hmm ... how it was created. So I went all over the country, all over the [00:08:55] world, trying to figure out how did this happen? And what I realized is I was just [00:09:00] getting worse and worse and worse. You know, my physical condition, everything was [00:09:05] deteriorating, same with my mental health, and so I started to look elsewhere.
[00:09:08] Jim Curtis: I started to look, [00:09:10] um- I guess in the wellness world and in the spiritual world.
[00:09:14] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:09:14] Jim Curtis: [00:09:15] Right? And so I started to go- Were
[00:09:15] Dr. Taz: you not getting answers from, like, you know, traditional medicine or [00:09:20] from doctors or-
[00:09:20] Jim Curtis: No. No. No, and I, I went all over... I went to, you know, name, name the big name [00:09:25] hospital-
[00:09:25] Dr. Taz: You went
[00:09:25] Jim Curtis: to all of them
[00:09:25] Jim Curtis: big name
[00:09:25] Dr. Taz: doctor. Yep.
[00:09:26] Jim Curtis: Yes. And so it... We couldn't figure out what was, what [00:09:30] was wrong other than there was a lesion on my spinal cord, and it seemed to be growing.
[00:09:34] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:09:34] Jim Curtis: [00:09:35] And, and so very slowly over time, I went from a very strong [00:09:40] athlete, um, to not being able to walk.
[00:09:42] Dr. Taz: Wow.
[00:09:43] Jim Curtis: And it took a really long [00:09:45] time to, one, first start to change that identity of, of this person- Right
[00:09:49] Jim Curtis: [00:09:50] to, to something different, accept that new identity, and to use it in my benefit- Mm-hmm ... [00:09:55] which is, um... And then how could I use my subconscious [00:10:00] mind to get my body back to a place that was significantly better? [00:10:05]
[00:10:05] Dr. Taz: So how do you... So people talk about this all the time, about you have to believe things, you have to [00:10:10] feel them, you have to see them visually to make them happen.
[00:10:13] Jim Curtis: Yeah, yeah.
[00:10:13] Dr. Taz: You know, for a [00:10:15] lot of us, that's very difficult to do. It's very difficult to [00:10:20] access that, right? Mm-hmm. How do you go about, you know, tapping into your subconscious, [00:10:25] shifting and changing patterns, you know? I think there's... You know, what's exciting right now about [00:10:30] medicine, and, and you know, I- what I love, is the fact that we're having these conversations, and they're not [00:10:35] weird, and they're not necessarily woo-woo anymore, things like that.
[00:10:38] Dr. Taz: But at the same time, I [00:10:40] think where people still struggle while they're accepting that, they really struggle with the [00:10:45] practical part of it, right? Or the how-to part of it. Like, how do you actually do this? Yes. Like, I can take a [00:10:50] supplement. I can take a pharmaceutical. Right. I can go get a procedure, right? I can, I can do all these other things, [00:10:55] but how do you do this, you know?
[00:10:57] Dr. Taz: Mm. And I think it's really important to give people some [00:11:00] guidance on how this can actually become a reality, otherwise, you know, it feels like I know this thing [00:11:05] is there, right, sitting on our shoulder, but what do I do about it?
[00:11:08] Jim Curtis: Mm-hmm.
[00:11:09] Dr. Taz: You know? [00:11:10]
[00:11:10] Jim Curtis: I love the way you pos- position that because it's easy. Like, I know if I take a pill, something can [00:11:15] change.
[00:11:15] Jim Curtis: Right. Even if that's sugar pill, if I know that it's supposed to do something, and I'm told that, I [00:11:20] can take it and something will change.
[00:11:21] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:11:21] Jim Curtis: And so the first is awareness, and I talk a lot about this in [00:11:25] The Book of Possibility.
[00:11:25] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:11:26] Jim Curtis: Is this release, align, and become.
[00:11:28] Dr. Taz: Yes.
[00:11:28] Jim Curtis: Is first you have to [00:11:30] release the old beliefs, align with what you want so that you can become everything that you want.
[00:11:34] Jim Curtis: [00:11:35] And so there are tools. Okay. Right? And sometimes if you're [00:11:40] just using your conscious mind, and you're asking or telling yourself the affirmations over and over [00:11:45] again, and you're writing them out or those things, that primes your reticular activating system [00:11:50] so that you'll go out into the world and find that thing that you want.
[00:11:54] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:11:54] Jim Curtis: Right? [00:11:55] Because our reticular activating system is, you know, looking for those things that we want, [00:12:00] what we believe in. It's, it's identifying in a world of unlimited possibility that [00:12:05] one possibility that we want. The second part is, okay, so we all heard about the [00:12:10] subconscious mind, and we know that we have beliefs.
[00:12:12] Jim Curtis: How do we change a belief? And I believe we [00:12:15] change a belief by a realization.
[00:12:16] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:12:17] Jim Curtis: Right? Instead of a manifestation, which is out here, [00:12:20] it's an internal realization, oh, that, that belief doesn't exist anywhere but in [00:12:25] my mind. You can't open up my heart or my spleen and find that belief.
[00:12:28] Dr. Taz: Hmm.
[00:12:29] Jim Curtis: So [00:12:30] if that belief only exists within my mind, is there a possibility that [00:12:35] other beliefs are there too, contrary beliefs?
[00:12:38] Jim Curtis: And so if there's a possibility that there are [00:12:40] contrary beliefs, is there a possibility that the belief that I have is not [00:12:45] 100% true? And if it's not 100% true, could there be another belief that's equally [00:12:50] as true but more beneficial?
[00:12:51] Dr. Taz: Huh. So as an example, give me an example. [00:12:55]
[00:12:55] Jim Curtis: As an ex- Well, you give me a belief.
[00:12:57] Jim Curtis: Um, there is an example that, [00:13:00] um ... Let's see. One, one of my clients has had, um, more recently, [00:13:05] there was, uh, an example. He had OCD.
[00:13:08] Dr. Taz: Yes.
[00:13:08] Jim Curtis: And there was a [00:13:10] belief that he needed to change all of the controls that his OCD had put in [00:13:15] place, right? So he believed that he had to go outside [00:13:20] and go to an intersection, uh, make sure that nothing bad happened.
[00:13:23] Jim Curtis: So he'd walk back and forth to that [00:13:25] intersection five times before he could go to the next block.
[00:13:27] Dr. Taz: Hmm.
[00:13:27] Jim Curtis: And so there was a belief that he [00:13:30] had to do that, that that control would keep him safe. So [00:13:35] There was also a belief that it, that he needed to monitor it and he couldn't change it. [00:13:40] So that was just a belief, right?
[00:13:42] Jim Curtis: So there's also an opportunity to [00:13:45] say, "If that belief is currently running and you feel the desire to go back and check, then we can [00:13:50] understand that that belief is running, and then maybe it's true that you are safe already [00:13:55] because your belief is already installed."
[00:13:57] Dr. Taz: So you're almost flipping the script on yourself.
[00:13:59] Jim Curtis: Yeah. And he said, [00:14:00] "Is it..." Okay. And so I said, "Instead of removing [00:14:05] the belief, is it possible that once you feel that belief and that trigger, you can realize that it [00:14:10] is in place, installed, and keeping you safe, and you don't necessarily have to follow it? You can believe [00:14:15] that it's already happening."
[00:14:16] Dr. Taz: And he said- And did he get better?
[00:14:17] Jim Curtis: He said yes. And I said, "So the truth [00:14:20] is that you're actually more in control, and the, the programs that you have are keeping you safe, and you don't have [00:14:25] to check them."
[00:14:26] Dr. Taz: And
[00:14:26] Jim Curtis: he said yes. And so I said, "What is your [00:14:30] desire to kinda like go and check something if you know that your belief is already installed and it's running and you [00:14:35] don't have to actually do it?"
[00:14:37] Jim Curtis: He said, "Zero." Mm. And so we [00:14:40] removed that just by showing that beliefs are malleable and that they're [00:14:45] running programs, and sometimes you can keep a program running and just raise the light switch, [00:14:50] the dimmer switch on another one that shines brighter.
[00:14:53] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:14:54] Jim Curtis: So I think that [00:14:55] when we start to think like, oh, I, I, I relate this to varicose veins.
[00:14:59] Jim Curtis: You know, we get- Oh, yes ... [00:15:00] varicose veins in our legs. Oh, yes. Yes. And they have this little machine that goes in- Yeah ... and it twists out- Cleans them out ... the vein [00:15:05] Yeah. And it, what's it called? It's
[00:15:06] Dr. Taz: sclerotherapy.
[00:15:06] Jim Curtis: Yes.
[00:15:07] Dr. Taz: Yes. Yeah.
[00:15:08] Jim Curtis: So and it's like, oh, I wanna do that with my [00:15:10] beliefs. Yeah. I have these neural pathways- Yeah
[00:15:11] Jim Curtis: and everybody's talking about them, and I wanna get rid of the old neural [00:15:15] pathways- Right ... and I want new neural pathways, right? And so when I visualize things, [00:15:20] 'cause the subconscious mind speaks in story and emotion instead of, like, factual, so I tell stories. [00:15:25] It's like, okay, well, you can do those with your varicose veins, but you can't do it with your neural pathways.
[00:15:29] Jim Curtis: Mm. There's [00:15:30] no thing that goes in and wraps up those neural pathways, pulls them out. They're always there. But instead what [00:15:35] we can do is we can just raise the dimmer switch, the light switch, you know, up [00:15:40] higher and lower on some so that you don't have to worry about removing beliefs anymore.
[00:15:44] Dr. Taz: [00:15:45] Mm.
[00:15:45] Jim Curtis: Instead, let's start to change and move them up on new beliefs that we can [00:15:50] make brighter.
[00:15:51] Dr. Taz: And so if you continue to fixate on the newer beliefs, [00:15:55] and I hope I'm getting this right, if you continue to fixate on the newer beliefs, that's still with your [00:16:00] conscious mind though, right? Like, you're still consciously trying to do that. Does that over time [00:16:05] build to a point where now it's embedded in your subconscious?
[00:16:09] Dr. Taz: You've es- [00:16:10] essentially, like, altered your subconscious? Can that happen?
[00:16:13] Jim Curtis: Yeah, but when you do this type of talk-
[00:16:14] Dr. Taz: [00:16:15] Right ...
[00:16:15] Jim Curtis: right, your subconscious mind's always listening.
[00:16:17] Dr. Taz: Ah, okay.
[00:16:18] Jim Curtis: There's never a time when we're subconscious.
[00:16:19] Dr. Taz: It's not [00:16:20] separated.
[00:16:20] Jim Curtis: Never.
[00:16:20] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:16:20] Jim Curtis: Right? So your subcon- See,
[00:16:21] Dr. Taz: that's the, like, doctor in me, like- Yeah
[00:16:23] Dr. Taz: separate things out. Yeah. Right?
[00:16:24] Jim Curtis: So the [00:16:25] subconscious- It's not separated ... mind is always thinking. Yeah. So even now as we're talking-
[00:16:28] Dr. Taz: Right ...
[00:16:28] Jim Curtis: as you start to position things [00:16:30] in ways that are questions for your subconscious mind, could that be true? Oh, yeah. Okay, maybe it is. Right. And, [00:16:35] and, you know, another way to say it is, okay, so there are, you know, seeds, and we [00:16:40] plant seeds in the ground just as we plant thoughts in our mind, and those seeds naturally, [00:16:45] easily, quietly, without us even know, grow- Mm
[00:16:48] Jim Curtis: every day more and more-
[00:16:49] Dr. Taz: [00:16:50] Fascinating.
[00:16:50] Jim Curtis: Yeah ... until they blossom. And when they blossom, there's a bud, and things are just different, just as they'll be [00:16:55] different for you 'cause there are seeds that have been planted even in this conversation in your own mind.
[00:16:59] Dr. Taz: If you're [00:17:00] listening to this and thinking, "I know something is off in my body, [00:17:05] but I don't know where to start," this is for you That's why I created [00:17:10] the Circle.
[00:17:10] Dr. Taz: The Circle is my private community where I and my team focus on [00:17:15] understanding your body from hormones and stress to metabolic health and longevity with [00:17:20] real-life guidance that you can actually use. This is about clarity and [00:17:25] consistency and support beyond the exam room and maybe outside of all [00:17:30] the different appointments and experts that you've been running around to.
[00:17:33] Dr. Taz: You can try the Circle with [00:17:35] a one-month trial using the promo code Podcast at [00:17:40] Hol Plus.co/circle. Again, that's Hol Plus, [00:17:45] Hol Plus.co/circle. All right, let's jump back into the episode. [00:17:50] I love the visual of s- like, that we do better with the subconscious in terms of storytelling- Yeah ... and [00:17:55] visualization and, and that type of thing.
[00:17:57] Dr. Taz: You know, I'm curious, like, when we're [00:18:00] talking about our children, you know, when you look at kids, you know, they tell stories all the time, [00:18:05] right? Mm-hmm. They're in the world of imagination and play. You know, how do parents [00:18:10] contribute to, you know, their belief system? How can we mold their belief system to a [00:18:15] certain extent in a way that's beneficial to them?
[00:18:17] Jim Curtis: Yeah, our identity and our beliefs- That's correct ... are all created between [00:18:20] zero and eight years old. So your children-
[00:18:21] Dr. Taz: Zero and eight-
[00:18:22] Jim Curtis: Yeah ...
[00:18:22] Dr. Taz: is the critical timeframe.
[00:18:24] Jim Curtis: Yep.
[00:18:24] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:18:24] Jim Curtis: [00:18:25] So the, the children are in a constant sponge-like theta state. Their mind is a sponge. So [00:18:30] everything that you say and teach them, you know, at that age, affirmations, [00:18:35] you know, if you get your par- your child to say, "I'm smart, I'm kind, I'm good," you know, [00:18:40] over and over again, that's a sponge.
[00:18:41] Jim Curtis: They'll, they'll believe that. Mm-hmm. So between zero and eight is a theta state. [00:18:45] Their minds are sponges, and you can get them to say, you know, affirmations or [00:18:50] whatever you'd like for them to start to absorb and become 'cause they're, that's what they're doing. That's [00:18:55] why they can learn languages so fast and all these other things.
[00:18:57] Jim Curtis: Fascinating. So, and, and to do it in [00:19:00] story. I mean, our minds, our subconscious minds talk in story and emotions. That's how [00:19:05] the, that's how the mi- the subconscious is developed, and so if you do it in [00:19:10] story and if you do it in repetition. But to go back to another thing that you said. Yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm. So you said, [00:19:15] "How do we do this?"
[00:19:15] Jim Curtis: Yes. Yeah. And I, uh, I offered a very obscure thing. Right, right. Right? Because it's not always cut and [00:19:20] dry when you're working with beliefs. But the first part is this. You build awareness, right? [00:19:25] By recognizing kind of what are some stories that I'm telling in my [00:19:30] life. And so ev- often I work with a lot of people that have been divorced- Mm-hmm
[00:19:34] Jim Curtis: or a lot of [00:19:35] people that have a health issue-
[00:19:36] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm ...
[00:19:36] Jim Curtis: or a lot of people that are getting older and haven't found [00:19:40] love, and they have a story that they tell over and over again. Right. That terrible spouse that I had a divorce, that [00:19:45] father of mine, that mother of mine did this. And you just look at the stories, and it's not to say those stories are [00:19:50] bad.
[00:19:50] Jim Curtis: You can't do it wrong. Right. Those things happened. But are you telling the stories often? [00:19:55] And if you're telling that same story often, like every time you go out with your girlfriends or every time you go out with your guy [00:20:00] friends, you're telling the same story of what the ex did or, um, and it's been [00:20:05] 10 years, then it's not to say r- you can't have your pain and your trauma.
[00:20:09] Jim Curtis: Mm-hmm. [00:20:10] It's to say, "Okay, that's a story that I'm telling. I can recognize it. [00:20:15] And now if I was to look at what the belief is, what's that story creating in my life?" And [00:20:20] it's like, okay, that's the first thing, and now I need to release that story. So let's just tell [00:20:25] that story in a different way.
[00:20:26] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:20:26] Jim Curtis: That's
[00:20:26] Dr. Taz: the- So you can rewrite your story.
[00:20:27] Jim Curtis: You rewrite your story. That's the easiest part, [00:20:30] right? Okay. So recognizing what I need to release, and then we start to go in, [00:20:35] even in meditation, even if you just relax yourself, you count down and, or you do [00:20:40] this in the morning, at night, when your mind is in a natural theta state, when you wake up or right before you go into bed.[00:20:45]
[00:20:45] Jim Curtis: You can start to ask your subconscious mind, like, "What do I need to do to move to the next level?"
[00:20:49] Dr. Taz: Mm. [00:20:50]
[00:20:50] Jim Curtis: Now, the last part is there is a simple technique that you can do.
[00:20:54] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:20:54] Jim Curtis: [00:20:55] Okay?
[00:20:55] Dr. Taz: I'm ready for this.
[00:20:55] Jim Curtis: And so this is a technique, and I start to say things [00:21:00] like, uh, and we can even try this with you right now.
[00:21:02] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:21:04] Jim Curtis: Is there something in your [00:21:05] life that you want to d- to create or, or ho- okay, do you, [00:21:10] do you wanna talk about that in just a small way?
[00:21:12] Dr. Taz: In a small way? Yeah. So, yes. I [00:21:15] want holistic health to be the model of healthcare in the future.
[00:21:17] Jim Curtis: Okay. So you wanna be the person that brings [00:21:20] that?
[00:21:20] Dr. Taz: Yes.
[00:21:21] Jim Curtis: Okay. So, um, when I say these questions to you, [00:21:25] and you can even just notice your shoulders now, right?
[00:21:28] Jim Curtis: Mm-hmm. Okay. And just let them [00:21:30] drop, right? Because we can just relax for a second. So now when I ask you these questions [00:21:35] now, like you are worthy of being seen, that you [00:21:40] are smart enough, you are knowledgeable enough, you are a leader. [00:21:45] Now I'm gonna say those again, and you just tell me if there's [00:21:50] any resistance in your mind, and you'll feel it in your mind and your body.
[00:21:53] Jim Curtis: You are worthy of being [00:21:55] seen by millions. You are smart enough. You are capable [00:22:00] enough. You are knowledgeable enough. You can create [00:22:05] change and generational wealth at the same time.
[00:22:09] Dr. Taz: The [00:22:10] first and the last-
[00:22:11] Jim Curtis: Okay ...
[00:22:12] Dr. Taz: have resistance.
[00:22:12] Jim Curtis: You are worthy of being seen.
[00:22:14] Dr. Taz: [00:22:15] Mm-hmm.
[00:22:15] Jim Curtis: Yeah. So now we just ask the subconscious mind, and something will come up immediately because we're
[00:22:19] Jim Curtis: [00:22:20] Subconscious mind just asks questions. So now is this, um, subconscious mind, you [00:22:25] ask, is this a belief from my childhood? Or- Yes. Okay. Good. [00:22:30] Could it go further back? Could this be a belief that was ingrained in my genes?
[00:22:34] Dr. Taz: Yes. [00:22:35]
[00:22:35] Jim Curtis: Ah, that came out stronger. Mm-hmm. Okay. So this is a belief that was in your genes. Is it [00:22:40] from your mother or from your father?
[00:22:43] Dr. Taz: Both.
[00:22:44] Jim Curtis: Okay. So you [00:22:45] believe that this idea of being seen, this, this, you know, not capable of [00:22:50] being seen, the resistance to that, is something that came from your mother and father into [00:22:55] your genes. Okay. And did it go back further than that? Just ask this question, is it further [00:23:00] back than them? Is it, is this generational trauma in some way?
[00:23:04] Jim Curtis: I'm [00:23:05]
[00:23:05] Dr. Taz: not as clear there. Okay. I think it's generational on my ... Hmm, [00:23:10] not clear. Um- Okay ... not clear.
[00:23:13] Jim Curtis: Okay.
[00:23:13] Dr. Taz: Yeah, yeah.
[00:23:13] Jim Curtis: So what we've gotten to [00:23:15] so far is that there's resistance to this idea, right? This idea that you need [00:23:20] to accomplish your mission.
[00:23:21] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:23:22] Jim Curtis: And then when we go back and we say to the subconscious mind, "Is this [00:23:25] resistance based on my childhood?"
[00:23:26] Jim Curtis: Yes. But is it further back than that? Is it in my ... Is it given [00:23:30] to me by one of my parents, like, genetically? And is like, okay, yes, this, they had [00:23:35] this. And does it go back further than that? Maybe not. So okay, so we start there. [00:23:40] Now we say, "What do I need?" And it will come in a, uh, that [00:23:45] will come in a picture or a word.
[00:23:47] Jim Curtis: What do I need to [00:23:50] resolve this issue?
[00:23:53] Dr. Taz: But do I need to [00:23:55] resolve belief is the first word?
[00:23:57] Jim Curtis: Okay.[00:24:00]
[00:24:01] Dr. Taz: Um
[00:24:04] Dr. Taz: [00:24:05] Forgiveness
[00:24:05] Jim Curtis: Forgiveness. Great. So that came pretty strong- Mm-hmm ... that second one. And [00:24:10] typically we do this in a theta state where I put you into- Right. Right, right, right ... right? But it doesn't, you don't need to be, because [00:24:15] it's, this will come, right? The body knows.
[00:24:16] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:24:16] Jim Curtis: The body knows, the mind knows. Yeah. It comes up.
[00:24:18] Jim Curtis: Okay. So [00:24:20] we know that with epigenetics, the genes can be changed.
[00:24:23] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:24:23] Jim Curtis: And we also know that, [00:24:25] um, we carry the beliefs of the parents- Mm-hmm ... right? And so this is not [00:24:30] necessarily something that you're holding yourself. It's been given to you. And so to resolve [00:24:35] it, you need to forgive both yourself and your parents for giving it to you.
[00:24:38] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:24:38] Jim Curtis: And so as we [00:24:40] start to do that, there are many different ways where we can start to say, [00:24:45] one, "I no longer carry this burden." Two, "I forgive the [00:24:50] mother. I forgive the father." I like to use the Ho'oponopono prayer, which is, "I'm sorry. Please [00:24:55] forgive me. Thank you. I love you."
[00:24:56] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:24:56] Jim Curtis: And as we say that over and over again, it listens and [00:25:00] resonates not only with our own energy and not only with our own subconscious, but the universal mind [00:25:05] itself- Mm
[00:25:05] Jim Curtis: and that's getting some spirituality in there. Wow. But, um, but as you [00:25:10] start to say, oh my God, this is, one, an awareness [00:25:15] of a block that can be released, and now I [00:25:20] need to ... Everything that I take out, this is fun about the subconscious mind, especially, like, [00:25:25] people who are smokers. You're like, okay- Right ... I'm gonna remove this need for smoking.
[00:25:28] Jim Curtis: I need to replace it. [00:25:30] And usually it's like, drink water. But when it's more emotion-based, it's like, [00:25:35] okay, I'm going to r- you know, kind of understand and release this [00:25:40] genetic predisposition to s- maybe not be seen-
[00:25:44] Dr. Taz: [00:25:45] Mm-hmm ...
[00:25:45] Jim Curtis: and forgive it from Mom and Dad, forgive myself for believing that it was [00:25:50] an issue with me, and therefore, I can move beyond it and [00:25:55] start to align with this idea that I am a [00:26:00] guiding light put on this world to bring this message for people's [00:26:05] health, and that who better than me?
[00:26:07] Dr. Taz: Hmm.
[00:26:08] Jim Curtis: And then as [00:26:10] you start to install that new belief- You can start to become and [00:26:15] act as if. And that is less of a manifestation out here-
[00:26:19] Dr. Taz: Right ... and
[00:26:19] Jim Curtis: [00:26:20] more of a realization-
[00:26:21] Dr. Taz: I like literally feel... I don't know how to describe how I feel. I feel like- [00:26:25]
[00:26:25] Jim Curtis: You feel like something new has been installed ...
[00:26:27] Dr. Taz: new and re- and released.
[00:26:29] Dr. Taz: I [00:26:30] feel like something just got released.
[00:26:31] Jim Curtis: Yeah.
[00:26:31] Dr. Taz: Not to steal your words, but you
[00:26:33] Jim Curtis: know, so. No, that's what, that's why I say this- Yeah ... [00:26:35] in the Book of Possibility, it's release the line to come. Yeah. And this, this book is the next best thing to working with [00:26:40] me one-on-one- Wow ... 'cause it has all these guided meditation.
[00:26:42] Jim Curtis: Because then we, then we solidify [00:26:45] this code. Because what just happened there is I spoke to your subconscious mind in a way that [00:26:50] allowed you to unravel a knot.
[00:26:52] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:26:53] Jim Curtis: Right? That's been locked. With awareness and [00:26:55] then release. Mm-hmm. And then now you can really work on the truth.
[00:26:58] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:26:58] Jim Curtis: And the truth [00:27:00] is that there is a possibility where there is [00:27:05] 100% chance that you are the one who's meant to bring this [00:27:10] to people.
[00:27:11] Dr. Taz: I just got chills.
[00:27:11] Jim Curtis: Yeah. Right?
[00:27:13] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:27:13] Jim Curtis: And so if that is a [00:27:15] possibility, now all that's left is for you to take action in an [00:27:20] inspired way to do it.
[00:27:22] Dr. Taz: Powerful. I wish I could tell you [00:27:25] guys, I have, I have, like, chills, you know? This is incredible. [00:27:30] So what are some ... So that was mine, right? My, my hangup, my block, [00:27:35] whatever we wanna call it.
[00:27:36] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm. What are some of the common things that ... Are there patterns that [00:27:40] keep coming up for people? Mm-hmm. Are there common things that are holding them [00:27:45] back? And- Yeah.
[00:27:46] Jim Curtis: So there's a lot of patterns. There's around finances.
[00:27:48] Dr. Taz: Hmm.
[00:27:49] Jim Curtis: Um, [00:27:50] people that are, one, afraid of finances. Yeah. They're afraid they won't have enough money.
[00:27:54] Jim Curtis: They ... [00:27:55] Or if they do have enough money, they think they're going to lose it, or they can't save it, or they get it, and then they [00:28:00] spend it all- Right ... or they give it away.
[00:28:01] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:28:01] Jim Curtis: Um, especially when they're reaching new levels. I always tell [00:28:05] a story that in my business a few years ago, after ... I was an executive for a long [00:28:10] time.
[00:28:10] Jim Curtis: Mm-hmm. I made a great living.
[00:28:10] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:28:11] Jim Curtis: But then I started my own business, and [00:28:15] one month I made a lot of money, and I was like, "Wow, that's more money than [00:28:20] I've ever made in a month before ever."
[00:28:21] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:28:22] Jim Curtis: And, and, uh, I started to [00:28:25] tell my team, "You know, I think, uh, these groups are full."
[00:28:27] Dr. Taz: Mm. "
[00:28:28] Jim Curtis: Don't allow ... Yeah, I don't- Mm-hmm
[00:28:29] Jim Curtis: I don't have time [00:28:30] for more clients. In fact," you know, and then I was like, "You know, why don't we give a few away for [00:28:35] free?" Mm-hmm. And, and I start ... And which is all beautiful things, right? Right. It's not bad. I like to keep small groups. Right. I like to give stuff away for [00:28:40] free. Right. And then, um, I started to get nervous about, you know, maybe [00:28:45] I'm doing too much, maybe I'm too busy, and then some people started to be like, "You know, now's not, not the [00:28:50] right time for me.
[00:28:51] Jim Curtis: Um, I, I can't spend this money." And, and, uh, [00:28:55] and I realized that what I was doing is I had reached an upper threshold of my own belief [00:29:00] in my ability to create wealth.
[00:29:02] Dr. Taz: Hmm.
[00:29:02] Jim Curtis: And so I had to actually [00:29:05] say, "Oh, there's a block here." And because of this block and my worthiness [00:29:10] of this level of wealth, I not only slowed myself down, [00:29:15] I, I, I put out an energetic frequency that other people no longer wanna come.[00:29:20]
[00:29:20] Dr. Taz: Wow.
[00:29:21] Jim Curtis: And I had to do a lot of work. I said, "What part of me [00:29:25] believes that I'm not deserving of unlimited [00:29:30] wealth?" And it's like, "Okay, let's go back. What age- Wait, was it? ... what age am [00:29:35] I?" You know, and I got back to an age, and this age was, you know, my blue-collar [00:29:40] parents saying, like, "You have champagne taste and beer pockets," my mother- Mm-hmm
[00:29:44] Jim Curtis: used to say.
[00:29:44] Dr. Taz: [00:29:45] Mm-hmm.
[00:29:45] Jim Curtis: And so people come for that. People come a lot for love, [00:29:50] this idea of good enough, worthy enough, a lot for trauma.
[00:29:53] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:29:53] Jim Curtis: A lot for trauma [00:29:55] of things that have happened
[00:29:55] Dr. Taz: in the past. Talk, talk to us about trauma for a second, you know, and what it does [00:30:00] to the subconscious, what it does to the brain, how it drives [00:30:05] behavior.
[00:30:05] Dr. Taz: You know, what's going on there?
[00:30:07] Jim Curtis: Yeah. So, uh, you know, I'm not a [00:30:10] trauma specialist, so I can't-
[00:30:11] Dr. Taz: Right ...
[00:30:11] Jim Curtis: give exactly.
[00:30:12] Dr. Taz: Right, right, right. But- This is totally just based on-
[00:30:13] Jim Curtis: Right ...
[00:30:14] Dr. Taz: what you've [00:30:15] seen, what you've observed- Yeah ... your experience.
[00:30:17] Jim Curtis: So I feel is that people really hold onto this [00:30:20] because they don't know how to release it, and then they shame themselves for having it.
[00:30:23] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:30:23] Jim Curtis: Right? And then they [00:30:25] find reasons to, you know, fear it and then almost becoming addicted to all of that.
[00:30:29] Dr. Taz: [00:30:30] Mm.
[00:30:30] Jim Curtis: Right? So now what would I be without this trauma? And so... And [00:30:35] it's like this is, is only almost an ownership of it. Like, "This is mine. It made me." It becomes [00:30:40] part of our identity, whether it's abusive parents or a child dying or an illness, [00:30:45] uh, or that really bad divorce.
[00:30:48] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:30:49] Jim Curtis: And so [00:30:50] it stores in the body, and we don't really know how to release it. Um, [00:30:55] and so when people come to me with a lot of trauma, we, we have to very [00:31:00] gently allow the mind and the body to realize that this can be [00:31:05] released. You don't need to hold onto it anymore. And two, you know, it's one thing to feel terrible.
[00:31:09] Jim Curtis: It's another [00:31:10] thing to be upset that you feel terrible- Mm-hmm ... or feel that you, you know, you haven't gotten over it quick [00:31:15] enough. Some people come, "It's been 30 years and I'm still thinking about-" Right ... you know? Yeah. And it's [00:31:20] like, okay, well, there are two things. That's okay. You can't do it wrong. [00:31:25] This is the path.
[00:31:26] Jim Curtis: That's one thing they say is like, "You're doing it exactly right."
[00:31:29] Dr. Taz: Mm. [00:31:30]
[00:31:30] Jim Curtis: This is your life, you know? This is the human experience, and we're gonna experience [00:31:35] pain. And the second thing is there is a possibility that you can move forward so [00:31:40] powerfully, and all you have to do is see it.
[00:31:43] Dr. Taz: Let's talk about [00:31:45] some of your work a- around the subconscious and belief and release and belief release [00:31:50] and...
[00:31:50] Dr. Taz: What, wait, what? Did I say release, align- Release, align, and become ... and become. We haven't talked about become.
[00:31:53] Jim Curtis: Okay.
[00:31:54] Dr. Taz: So before I, uh, [00:31:55] move on, let's talk about become. We've talked about align-
[00:31:56] Jim Curtis: Yeah ...
[00:31:57] Dr. Taz: which is [00:32:00] Acknowledging an awareness and then retelling your s- rewriting your story, right? [00:32:05] Uh, and then realigning to that.
[00:32:07] Dr. Taz: What has become?
[00:32:09] Jim Curtis: Yeah. [00:32:10] It's all around awareness. So the release is, okay, I just figured out I have a [00:32:15] block, like we did, and I want, I wanna now release that block so that [00:32:20] I can create a vision for the future-
[00:32:22] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm ...
[00:32:22] Jim Curtis: align with that vision-
[00:32:23] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm ...
[00:32:24] Jim Curtis: fall in love with [00:32:25] it, which love is ... And when I talk about love is blissful alignment.
[00:32:29] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:32:29] Jim Curtis: [00:32:30] Right? As opposed to this romantic- Right ... chemical love. Mm-hmm. Fall in love with it in this blissful alignment, so it's [00:32:35] actually fun, and now become it. And to become it, it has to become part of our identity, our [00:32:40] I am. Our I am, who we believe we're capable, who we believe we are, w- who [00:32:45] everything about us is what creates our reality.
[00:32:47] Jim Curtis: Our identity creates our reality. So that's the first [00:32:50] part. How do I create a new reality that says, "I am [00:32:55] this"? And the biggest thing is to say, "I am not..." Like in hypnosis, around drinking [00:33:00] or hip- Yep ... smoking. "I am, I'm not a smoker. I'm not the type of person that smokes."
[00:33:04] Dr. Taz: [00:33:05] Mm. "
[00:33:05] Jim Curtis: I'm not a drinker. I'm not the type of person who drinks."
[00:33:08] Jim Curtis: And so we start to s- when you [00:33:10] start to say that, you're like, "Oh, then I wouldn't smoke. I'm just not a smoker."
[00:33:13] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:33:13] Jim Curtis: So when we start to [00:33:15] align our identity, who we believe we are, supported by our ego, then it [00:33:20] becomes. And so that's one thing that we do with, in becoming. The second part is to [00:33:25] realize that we are much bigger than this ego, than this body- [00:33:30] Mm-hmm
[00:33:30] Jim Curtis: than this manifestation of us. Mm-hmm. That there is energy and forces far [00:33:35] beyond what we can comprehend and see, whether we call it the quantum field, the universe, the universal mind, the [00:33:40] void- Mm-hmm ... God, spirit. And so if we can align with this, the I am that I am, meaning [00:33:45] I am the creator.
[00:33:46] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:33:46] Jim Curtis: You know, the Bible says, "I am that I am."
[00:33:49] Jim Curtis: You know, [00:33:50] everything from the Buddhists to- Everybody ... the Sufi religion. Ev- everybody, [00:33:55] right Everybody's talking about we create our reality around us.
[00:33:57] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:33:58] Jim Curtis: So if we can align with that [00:34:00] in a theta state, which I believe is the bridge [00:34:05] to this quantum, the universal mind, so that we can create [00:34:10] whatever we want.
[00:34:10] Jim Curtis: So the way that I help people do this is like, okay, we're aligning with who we [00:34:15] wanna become.
[00:34:15] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:34:16] Jim Curtis: Let's do the exercises so that it starts to fit into our [00:34:20] identity. Repetition, action around that. [00:34:25] Repetition and action create identity.
[00:34:27] Dr. Taz: Repetition and action- Yes ... create identity. [00:34:30]
[00:34:30] Jim Curtis: Just take work for a second.
[00:34:31] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:34:31] Jim Curtis: So did you have a job as a teenager?
[00:34:34] Dr. Taz: Yes.
[00:34:34] Jim Curtis: [00:34:35] Right. What was that job?
[00:34:36] Dr. Taz: Scooping ice cream.
[00:34:37] Jim Curtis: Good. I have a client say the same thing.
[00:34:39] Dr. Taz: [00:34:40] Yeah.
[00:34:40] Jim Curtis: Scooping ice cream. That was probably a great job. Scooping ice cream. And you probably made a lot of tips, right? Made a
[00:34:44] Dr. Taz: lot of tips.
[00:34:44] Jim Curtis: [00:34:45] Yeah, and in the summer. Yes. I know. And so as a teenager, that was a really great job.
[00:34:49] Jim Curtis: Right. And you're like, yeah, [00:34:50] I, I, you know, like, you- some pride that you had a job. Yeah. You know, you had some money. There was some [00:34:55] independence there, right? And so that's great. But now if you were to think about going [00:35:00] back and, like, if someone... If I said to you, "You know, you're gonna take a step back and [00:35:05] become an ice cream scooper again-
[00:35:06] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm
[00:35:06] Jim Curtis: then your identity has grown beyond that.
[00:35:09] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:35:09] Jim Curtis: It won't [00:35:10] accept it. Like, that's not you anymore.
[00:35:11] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:35:12] Jim Curtis: Right? And we do this naturally over time, [00:35:15] but we can speed this up and change the identity by repetition and action, [00:35:20] meaning if your identity is about being, um, someone that [00:35:25] can help others, then those first three clients that you get as a hypno coach [00:35:30] or as a coach or as a hypnotherapist, then that starts to solidify that you are [00:35:35] capable of helping others, and your identity starts to change.
[00:35:37] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:35:38] Jim Curtis: Or if you wanna be an author, start [00:35:40] writing some chapters, get a Substack, put it out there-
[00:35:42] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm ...
[00:35:42] Jim Curtis: and your identity starts to change. The next part is [00:35:45] when we go into a theta state or a hypnosis or a deep transcendental meditation, we can start to [00:35:50] connect with our subconscious and with the field of po- infinite [00:35:55] possibility and start to invoke the I am that I am-
[00:35:58] Dr. Taz: Hmm
[00:35:59] Jim Curtis: with these I [00:36:00] am statements in that state, and it changes our energy and our spirit. [00:36:05]
[00:36:05] Dr. Taz: So fascinating. How do we get You know, as I'm hearing you speak, how do we get into [00:36:10] that theta state? Like, what is a good way to get there? Most of us are running around, [00:36:15] most of us are juggling 50,000 things, right? Mm-hmm.
[00:36:18] Dr. Taz: You know, how do we get there so that [00:36:20] we can actually walk through this process?
[00:36:21] Jim Curtis: Yeah. And I like to do [00:36:25] self-hypnosis.
[00:36:25] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:36:25] Jim Curtis: W- anybody can do it, and it's different than meditation because a [00:36:30] meditation is a very mindful- Right ... practice. And so meditation is I'm here, [00:36:35] and when I'm gonna focus on my breathing, and when- Right
[00:36:37] Jim Curtis: a thought comes, I'm gonna let it go.
[00:36:38] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:36:39] Jim Curtis: And with [00:36:40] self-hypnosis, your mind can wander and wander, and drift and dream. And we just- It's almost
[00:36:44] Dr. Taz: [00:36:45] easier.
[00:36:45] Jim Curtis: It, it is. I think it's easier. I
[00:36:46] Dr. Taz: think it sounds easier. Yeah. I remember when I first started [00:36:50] meditating, it was like, "Okay, you're meditating. All right. Well, here we go.
[00:36:52] Dr. Taz: Here we..." It was like a- Yeah ... it was like something to like- Meditate. [00:36:55] All right ... muscle through. You know? So, yeah. Oh, God, I need to get
[00:36:56] Jim Curtis: up and g-
[00:36:57] Dr. Taz: Exactly ... stack the
[00:36:57] Jim Curtis: magazines
[00:36:58] Dr. Taz: again. Exactly. Uh. You know?
[00:36:59] Jim Curtis: So.
[00:36:59] Dr. Taz: [00:37:00] Yeah.
[00:37:00] Jim Curtis: Yeah. And so with self-hypnosis, what can happen is that we... And [00:37:05] there are many videos on this. Yeah. But we can get ourselves into a relaxed state [00:37:10] where our, the part of our mind that, that listens to it all-
[00:37:14] Dr. Taz: [00:37:15] Mm-hmm
[00:37:15] Jim Curtis: meaning we can even understand... You know, there's a part of us that's listening [00:37:20] to... There's a part of me that's listening to me talking right now.
[00:37:22] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:37:23] Jim Curtis: Or the director.
[00:37:24] Dr. Taz: Yep.
[00:37:24] Jim Curtis: [00:37:25] And so we use the director to get us into a relaxed state, count us down [00:37:30] from 10, tell our body to relax, a progressive relaxation with our body- Mm-hmm
[00:37:34] Jim Curtis: and we get [00:37:35] into a, a trance state. And then from there, we can [00:37:40] start to give ourselves suggestions.
[00:37:42] Dr. Taz: So you can do that anywhere?
[00:37:44] Jim Curtis: You can do it [00:37:45] anywhere. You can... You know, you don't have
[00:37:46] Dr. Taz: to- In your car. You could do it- One...
[00:37:47] Jim Curtis: Not while driving, but yes.
[00:37:48] Dr. Taz: Well, yeah, ideally not while [00:37:50] driving. But you can do... I mean, you don't need
[00:37:52] Jim Curtis: a s- A lot of people join my groups from the front seat of their car 'cause it's the only [00:37:55] private place they
[00:37:55] Dr. Taz: have.
[00:37:56] Dr. Taz: Yeah. So it doesn't need necessarily, like, an appointment [00:38:00] or production or... It's just something you do.
[00:38:03] Jim Curtis: That's what's wonderful about [00:38:05] self-hypnosis, is that you don't have to go to a hypnotherapist to do it. You're your, you're your own, [00:38:10] you're your own coach.
[00:38:13] Dr. Taz: Tell me a little bit about what you've [00:38:15] seen, you know, in your work with just medical conditions.
[00:38:19] Dr. Taz: You... It [00:38:20] started you on this journey, right? Mm-hmm. Now I see all kinds of things. Our team, you know, we see all [00:38:25] kinds of things in practice. Everything. You know, there's a escalating mental health, you know, [00:38:30] crisis amongst all ages. There is, uh, an escalation of [00:38:35] diagnoses like autoimmune disease and cancer, and it's all- Yeah
[00:38:37] Dr. Taz: skewing downward in terms of age groups [00:38:40] and when we're first starting to see some of the stuff. What, what are you [00:38:45] seeing... How, how do the two worlds come together is my question. How, how does this world [00:38:50] around belief and your subconscious, you know, tie [00:38:55] into the very physical medical world which you know is a huge engine that is [00:39:00] constantly pumping out advice and information?
[00:39:02] Dr. Taz: How do the two come together?
[00:39:03] Jim Curtis: Right. Well, I see it as [00:39:05] emotional regulation.
[00:39:06] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:39:06] Jim Curtis: And if we can regulate our emotions so that we [00:39:10] feel less anxious, I believe that has so many benefits. And so what I use in my [00:39:15] work is the ability just to remove some of the, that inflammation [00:39:20] of the mind.
[00:39:20] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:39:20] Jim Curtis: So that, uh-
[00:39:21] Dr. Taz: I love that you use that word.
[00:39:22] Jim Curtis: Yeah. That's a
[00:39:22] Dr. Taz: good word.
[00:39:23] Jim Curtis: Yeah.
[00:39:23] Dr. Taz: So.
[00:39:24] Jim Curtis: So that- Yeah ... the [00:39:25] inflammation in the body goes away.
[00:39:26] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:39:26] Jim Curtis: And so, um, there have been many [00:39:30] clinicals or- Mm-hmm ... many studies that show how meditation does that or how [00:39:35] hypnosis can, can help do that. And so I believe that with emotional [00:39:40] regulation you can reduce your pain.
[00:39:41] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:39:42] Jim Curtis: And so that means that you stop letting your [00:39:45] emotions take- Right ... control of you.
[00:39:46] Dr. Taz: Hmm.
[00:39:47] Jim Curtis: Right? It... I mean, and, and [00:39:50] you realize that we have lots of emotions and they come and go, and we don't have to [00:39:55] follow them every time. And every thought that we have is not true, and so we can let [00:40:00] those go, too. And if we are practicing emotional regulation [00:40:05] and we release some of the worry and the fear, then that often creates a [00:40:10] difficult, different chemical makeup in our body-
[00:40:12] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm
[00:40:12] Jim Curtis: and people experience less pain. [00:40:15] People experience more ease in their joints. Um, and [00:40:20] for me, it helped me walk better.
[00:40:22] Dr. Taz: Oh, wow.
[00:40:22] Jim Curtis: Yeah.
[00:40:23] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:40:23] Jim Curtis: So now I not only [00:40:25] would, um, stop shaming my body-
[00:40:26] Dr. Taz: Right ... like, "
[00:40:27] Jim Curtis: Damn this knee for not working," or- Yeah ... whatever [00:40:30] it was. Instead I would say, "You know what? You're doing the best you can.
[00:40:33] Jim Curtis: I can't believe this body's still holding me up [00:40:35] after all you've been through." Mm-hmm. Um, and-
[00:40:37] Dr. Taz: You flip
[00:40:37] Jim Curtis: the script ... yeah, you flip it. Mm-hmm. And so it's [00:40:40] like, wow, that's gratitude. Okay. And that feels better. [00:40:45] And now how do I start to visualize? And so what I start to do is [00:40:50] really visualize. Okay, this is my knee lifting when I go upstairs.
[00:40:54] Jim Curtis: This is... [00:40:55] And so now I was telling my body in a loving way [00:41:00] how to move.
[00:41:00] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:41:01] Jim Curtis: And I started to walk again, and I started to [00:41:05] lower the inflammation in my body. 'Cause you were not
[00:41:06] Dr. Taz: walking...
[00:41:06] Jim Curtis: I wasn't... Well, it was a short period of time where I wasn't walking.
[00:41:09] Dr. Taz: [00:41:10] Okay.
[00:41:10] Jim Curtis: But for many years, I couldn't walk more than three blocks.
[00:41:13] Jim Curtis: There was, it was always painful- Mm-hmm ... pain [00:41:15] in my ankles, and that pain is gone.
[00:41:18] Dr. Taz: Incredible
[00:41:18] Jim Curtis: And most of it's [00:41:20] because of emotional regulation
[00:41:22] Dr. Taz: I feel like emotional regulation is something I see everyone [00:41:25] struggle with nowadays Mm-hmm ... whether, you know, it's, uh, people my age or our children's [00:41:30] age or everybody in between.
[00:41:32] Dr. Taz: Why are we having such a problem with [00:41:35] this right now?
[00:41:36] Jim Curtis: I think because we have so much [00:41:40] information, and we're addicted to it Is it almost too
[00:41:42] Dr. Taz: much?
[00:41:42] Jim Curtis: Yes. I heard [00:41:45] someone say, I don't know who it was or what their credentials were, but they said, [00:41:50] "You know, we weren't meant to have all the world's information at our fingertips [00:41:55] every minute."
[00:41:55] Dr. Taz: Mm. "
[00:41:56] Jim Curtis: That we lived in small villages of 100 people- Yeah ... and in our tribe, [00:42:00] we kind of just kept things going copacetic. And now that we have all this [00:42:05] information of every human all over the world all at once, that it just [00:42:10] causes dysregulation."
[00:42:11] Dr. Taz: Mm. And I- And that looks like anxiety or anger or-
[00:42:14] Jim Curtis: [00:42:15] Fear ...
[00:42:15] Dr. Taz: OCD or fear or worry Yeah One of the things I love about Chinese [00:42:20] medicine is that they very much connected your emotional state with your [00:42:25] physical health, right?
[00:42:26] Dr. Taz: Yeah I mean, every meridian had an emotion that goes with it- I love that ... goes with [00:42:30] it and has a physical ailment that goes with it. And so in our practice, the way we, you know, the [00:42:35] methodology that we use, we bring that into the medical model. And, you know, I will do a lot [00:42:40] of like, "Okay, your spleen meridian is off, and that goes with worry, so tell me- Oh, wow
[00:42:44] Dr. Taz: [00:42:45] about that." And they're like, "Wait, what? What are you doing right now?" Do you do the muscle
[00:42:48] Jim Curtis: testing
[00:42:49] Dr. Taz: as- Not muscle [00:42:50] testing ... yeah We do... It's meridian evaluation, where you can measure electrical resistance at the [00:42:55] acupuncture points. Oh, wow. And it spits out, like, a meridian evaluation, and every [00:43:00] meridian has an emotion, has an organ, has acupuncture points on it.
[00:43:04] Dr. Taz: And [00:43:05] so I always warn everybody, I go, "This is not, like, academic," right? "This is not like, you [00:43:10] know, conventional medicine type stuff. I can't make a technical diagnosis as a physician off [00:43:15] of this, but I can be guided, you know, in terms of, like, where we really need to [00:43:20] focus." And in that meridian evaluation, it will separate out energy [00:43:25] into physical energy issues versus- Mm-hmm
[00:43:27] Dr. Taz: emotional energy issues. Oh,
[00:43:29] Jim Curtis: wow.
[00:43:29] Dr. Taz: [00:43:30] And the way that that's helpful for our, for myself and my team is that, [00:43:35] okay, if someone has emotional energy issues as their [00:43:40] primary, like that is the main thing- If I turn around and I give them this fancy functional [00:43:45] medicine plan with, like, all these labs to do and all these things to take and all these [00:43:50] data points to track, they don't have the bandwidth for it, right?
[00:43:52] Dr. Taz: Yeah. It's gonna fail.
[00:43:53] Jim Curtis: Yeah.
[00:43:53] Dr. Taz: And so [00:43:55] that, you know, that I keep educating everybody is a sign, like, okay, that stuff [00:44:00] goes away. They actually need somebody like you or somebody, you know, who's going to really work with them [00:44:05] on emotional regulation and on release, you know? Yeah. And [00:44:10] for me, you know, to answer my own question, that's where the stuff really fits because for some people, [00:44:15] their physicality and their symptomology is actually a, it's, [00:44:20] it's actually emotional first.
[00:44:21] Dr. Taz: You know what I mean? Yeah. It's actually starting there. It's neuroinflammation is the [00:44:25] word that I use- Oh, really? ... all the time, right? Yeah. So, so that's why when you said that, I'm like, ding. [00:44:30] But, um, but that- I
[00:44:31] Jim Curtis: love that. It's so interesting that you can measure the energy of the meridian. [00:44:35]
[00:44:35] Dr. Taz: Yeah. I mean that- I mean, conventionally they're gonna dismiss it, right?
[00:44:38] Dr. Taz: But we've been doing it since the [00:44:40] beginning. I've had the practice now for 17, 18 years, and I brought it [00:44:45] in on day one 'cause I've always been fascinated by Chinese medicine. But I also didn't [00:44:50] have the experience of the ancient Chinese practitioners, right? I didn't have legacies and [00:44:55] generation, 'cause they hand the knowledge down, like, you know, practitioner to practitioner over generations.
[00:44:59] Dr. Taz: [00:45:00] So I knew I didn't have that, like, instant you know, gift that [00:45:05] many of the Chinese medicine practitioners have, where it's face and tongue diagnosis, and they know very [00:45:10] quickly what's going on with you. So I'm like, "We need like a more tangible way of like assessing this." [00:45:15] So that tool has led me down this path, right?
[00:45:19] Dr. Taz: And led me to [00:45:20] being open to understanding where this intersection is, you know? [00:45:25] So for me, I'm still not where you are, but, you know, for me, I see grief [00:45:30] and worry and fear and, uh, you know, [00:45:35] anger as emotions I can actually measure-
[00:45:38] Jim Curtis: Wow ...
[00:45:39] Dr. Taz: and then [00:45:40] paint and draw to where they're impacting like the organs and the [00:45:45] numbers and all the other things.
[00:45:47] Jim Curtis: Yeah.
[00:45:47] Dr. Taz: And bringing that together, sometimes people get it, but [00:45:50] sometimes I see like, you know, they're just like, "Wait, what's she doing now?" But I do feel like it's the [00:45:55] future. I, you know, it is the future if we can understand that, you [00:46:00] know, as individuals about ourselves. But I'm even thinking about the family, [00:46:05] right?
[00:46:05] Dr. Taz: Like you've got a family body where some people may be emotionally regulated and [00:46:10] some people may not be.
[00:46:11] Jim Curtis: Mm-hmm.
[00:46:11] Dr. Taz: But that changes the frequency of what's going on within that family. [00:46:15]
[00:46:15] Jim Curtis: Yeah.
[00:46:15] Dr. Taz: And then that in turn changes the belief of every single person coming out of that [00:46:20] family, right? That's our family story, right?
[00:46:21] Dr. Taz: That's where some of this is coming from that you touched on.
[00:46:24] Jim Curtis: Right.
[00:46:24] Dr. Taz: You know? [00:46:25] Like each of us, if you sat us down as sisters, you know, there's three of us. Like we [00:46:30] probably tell very similar stories even though we may not look exactly the same, 'cause we're coming out [00:46:35] of the s- same unit, right? Right. So the importance of like [00:46:40] being able to do this work is important, you know, for us each [00:46:45] individually.
[00:46:45] Jim Curtis: Mm-hmm.
[00:46:46] Dr. Taz: It's important medically, but it's also important like in the structure that we [00:46:50] create as families or societies or communities or any of those things. 'Cause that's the whole
[00:46:52] Jim Curtis: reason we're here, right?
[00:46:53] Dr. Taz: Correct. You know? Right. [00:46:55] And that's how you grow, and that's- Yeah ... how you build. Yes. You know? So j- I think it's so important.
[00:46:59] Dr. Taz: What are some of the [00:47:00] other blocks that you've seen people kinda come up against that they may not even realize that [00:47:05] they have? You know, 'cause like what you just uncovered in me, maybe I knew it, [00:47:10] but I don't think I, I would've been able to verbalize it.
[00:47:13] Jim Curtis: Right.
[00:47:13] Dr. Taz: You know? So I'm [00:47:15] curious, like what are some of the other things that-
[00:47:16] Jim Curtis: Most of it's fear.
[00:47:18] Dr. Taz: Fear.
[00:47:18] Jim Curtis: Right? And [00:47:20] f- that's what I boil it down and, um- I [00:47:25] think at the very, very core of it is, um, [00:47:30] fear of acceptance. You know, I'm not good enough and I won't be accepted. Mm-hmm. I'm not good [00:47:35] enough and I won't be loved. I'm, I'm not... I have a fear that I'm n- I'm not worthy. And it's... [00:47:40] And like you said, we have these family units, and no one wants to go [00:47:45] and live on a m- Some people may say it, but no one wants to go to the- Yeah
[00:47:47] Jim Curtis: top of the mountain and live alone. We all have moments where- Right. Right. [00:47:50] And so really, we're here in this human life, this school of life, to have these interpersonal [00:47:55] relationships, and a lot of our fear results in around what other people are doing. That's [00:48:00] why the book Let Them was such a-
[00:48:01] Dr. Taz: Right ...
[00:48:02] Jim Curtis: giant book, was like, "Oh, let me off the hook.
[00:48:04] Jim Curtis: I don't..." You [00:48:05] know, like, "I don't have to worry about that other person anymore." Right. And there was some immediate relief there.
[00:48:09] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:48:09] Jim Curtis: [00:48:10] And, um, whether that went far enough or not, but, but I believe [00:48:15] that the thing that people don't even realize that's stopping them is a fear somewhere [00:48:20] in their, in their subconscious operating system.
[00:48:23] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:48:23] Jim Curtis: And the only way that we can [00:48:25] alleviate that fear is to recognize it and just to give it a lot of love, like you'd give a child love. [00:48:30]
[00:48:30] Dr. Taz: The other word that's floating around in culture right now is, and you touched upon it, is generational... [00:48:35] Well, the words are generational trauma- Yeah ... or generational whatever.
[00:48:39] Dr. Taz: [00:48:40] And, you know, you touched upon, like, is this in your genes? Has this been handed down? But even if it's [00:48:45] in your genes, we can still change things.
[00:48:47] Jim Curtis: Yeah. Yeah, it's been proven. [00:48:50] Yeah. That's what this study of epigenetics is. Like, you know, even with, um ... You know, this [00:48:55] started so long ago with Bruce Lipton's Biology of Belief.
[00:48:57] Jim Curtis: Mm. There is, there is [00:49:00] a possi- n- you know, nothing's written in stone.
[00:49:02] Dr. Taz: Right, and we can change it all. I [00:49:05] did a TED Talk back in, um, 2016 or 2017, and you've already [00:49:10] touched upon it, so I don't wanna spend too much time on it. But very quickly, I think it was a little bit ahead of its [00:49:15] time, but the whole thing was that, uh, you know, my mom and grandmother had their [00:49:20] own stories of, you know, being disadvantaged or, you know, not being able to express [00:49:25] their power in their fullest 'cause of culture and circumstances and what women were back then and where they were and [00:49:30] all that other stuff.
[00:49:31] Dr. Taz: So I always saw in my mom, like, this ... She's brilliant, gorgeous, [00:49:35] brilliant woman, but, like, very hesitant, very fearful. You could see it, [00:49:40] right? And then I come along and raised in a very [00:49:45] chaotic way. They had a very dysfunctional, you know, relationship or whatever else, but I was, like, [00:49:50] the parent, basically, of the family.
[00:49:52] Dr. Taz: And I had the same kind [00:49:55] of thing, a l- a lot of fear, a lot of, like, you know, feeling like you're on unsettled ground all the [00:50:00] time, that type of thing. So I'm like, "You know, well, that's why I'm that way." Then I have this daughter, [00:50:05] and you can't ask for a better, like, family [00:50:10] structure and family unit, right?
[00:50:12] Dr. Taz: Like, stable home, [00:50:15] access, you know, whatever. She has it, too.
[00:50:18] Jim Curtis: Okay. [00:50:20]
[00:50:20] Dr. Taz: And I'm like, "What the hell?" Yeah. You know? And as I started to l- [00:50:25] look, it's the sa- and I can't even ... It's, like, this look. It's this look in her eye. I used to have it. I [00:50:30] probably still do. My mom definitely has it. I, I remember my grandmother from when I was little.[00:50:35]
[00:50:35] Dr. Taz: I'm like, "Why? Why?" You know? And so then as I started to l- actually look at the [00:50:40] science, you know, the mitochondria, the maternal mitochond- the mitochondria is, [00:50:45] like, sent down over generations, and it's not touched usually, you know, from the [00:50:50] maternal line. It doesn't alter that much, and that's actually where emotions and memories and all that stuff is [00:50:55] stored.
[00:50:55] Dr. Taz: Yeah. And I was like, "Oh, my goodness." So I do this TED Talk back in 2016 or [00:51:00] '17. Everyone was like- Okay, good job. I don't know what you were talking about.
[00:51:04] Jim Curtis: [00:51:05] You're ahead of your time.
[00:51:06] Dr. Taz: I
[00:51:06] Jim Curtis: know. You're ahead of your
[00:51:07] Dr. Taz: time. Everyone's like, "Uh, I don't know what she's saying." Yeah. So [00:51:10] anyhow.
[00:51:10] Jim Curtis: Yeah.
[00:51:10] Dr. Taz: But this is the stuff we were talking about, right?
[00:51:13] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm. That like-
[00:51:13] Jim Curtis: Yep ...
[00:51:14] Dr. Taz: and now people [00:51:15] talk about generational trauma and gener- you know, generational load and things- Yeah ... like that more freely, you [00:51:20] know? Yeah. So I mean, I think this is so promising that we have the [00:51:25] power to change things, you know? What do you hope people take away from The Book of Possibility?[00:51:30]
[00:51:30] Jim Curtis: I ... You know, the, the biggest thing that I hope people will take away is that it's possible. What you [00:51:35] want is possible.
[00:51:35] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:51:36] Jim Curtis: You know, and we often think that, you know, "Not for me," [00:51:40] especially with healing and health.
[00:51:41] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:51:41] Jim Curtis: It's like, oh, we hear these stories of these miraculous things happening, [00:51:45] like this person healed themself or they-
[00:51:46] Dr. Taz: Right
[00:51:47] Jim Curtis: found this, right? And, and- Right ... we start to think, "Oh, enough. [00:51:50] Not me. Maybe that happened to them, but they didn't have what I had, or [00:51:55] this particular thing." Or, you know, you hear, you hear of someone s- [00:52:00] leaving their job and starting a new career and- Yeah ... having a bestselling book and- Yeah ... uh, not, not me.
[00:52:04] Dr. Taz: Not for [00:52:05] me.
[00:52:05] Dr. Taz: Right? Yeah.
[00:52:05] Jim Curtis: And so it is possible. You know, there is a possibility [00:52:10] that you can do it as well, and it's just [00:52:15] changing the code. There's a few, I call them tweaks- Mm-hmm ... but there's just a few things that you can [00:52:20] realign to, at the very least, live a life that [00:52:25] is more in flow, more happier and with less anxiety.
[00:52:29] Dr. Taz: Do you think [00:52:30] that this type of work, uh, needs to be in the medical training modules? Like, [00:52:35] doctors need to understand how to work with patients on this, or at least bring them- [00:52:40] I don't know ... you know, into the team, like, or into, like, a care plan for, for [00:52:45] patients, especially patients struggling with symptoms and-
[00:52:47] Jim Curtis: Yeah
[00:52:48] Dr. Taz: chronic disease and things like that?
[00:52:49] Jim Curtis: I [00:52:50] think it needs to be more widely available. Uh, I think the doctors have their hands full- Right ... with the [00:52:55] mechanics as it is. True. Yeah. Right?
[00:52:56] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:52:57] Jim Curtis: And so, um- [00:53:00] I think our bodies and our minds are so complex, it really takes a team. Now, what, [00:53:05] what pains me, and I've experienced it and I see it, is how difficult the healthcare [00:53:10] system is- Oh, yeah
[00:53:10] Jim Curtis: to work within.
[00:53:11] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:53:11] Jim Curtis: Yeah, it's... And then if you do go through the [00:53:15] painstaking art of finding the right people to care for you, and then your insurance won't cover it.
[00:53:19] Dr. Taz: [00:53:20] Right.
[00:53:20] Jim Curtis: And so you're caught in this quagmire of overwhelm with too much [00:53:25] information, not being able to find the right person, and then having incredible bills- Mm
[00:53:29] Jim Curtis: that people just [00:53:30] give up. Mm-hmm. They become overwhelmed and give up.
[00:53:31] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:53:32] Jim Curtis: So it's like, what can you take on yourself? Can I [00:53:35] learn meditation, self-hypnosis? Can I learn neuro-linguistic programming so I can get myself [00:53:40] out of these funks? Can I learn to emotionally regulate? And when I do that, can I then go [00:53:45] find the doctor that's going to be progressive like you?
[00:53:47] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:53:48] Jim Curtis: Right? Mm-hmm. And, and in [00:53:50] ways that will look at not just what my body's doing, but maybe my energy and other, [00:53:55] other formats.
[00:53:56] Dr. Taz: To bring this back home for the person listening or watching [00:54:00] today, what would you tell them? If there was one thing they could do to [00:54:05] start to enter this world of, of understanding, right, [00:54:10] and tapping into their subconscious and rewriting their story and realigning, what is one [00:54:15] thing that you would have them do and maybe work on just for a couple minutes every single day?
[00:54:19] Dr. Taz: What would you have them [00:54:20] do?
[00:54:20] Jim Curtis: Yeah, I would start with 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes at night. So right when [00:54:25] you-
[00:54:25] Dr. Taz: That's an easy prescription, guys. Right? 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes at night.
[00:54:28] Jim Curtis: People are like, "Oh my God, 20 minutes?" I can do
[00:54:29] Dr. Taz: [00:54:30] that.
[00:54:30] Jim Curtis: 20 minutes.
[00:54:31] Dr. Taz: We can all do that. Yeah. We can all do that.
[00:54:32] Jim Curtis: And, and so, um- [00:54:35] You know, we have 24 hours in the day that we're in the habit of being [00:54:40] ourselves, and so if we just have 20 minutes, you know, every [00:54:45] day, you can make a big dent in that.
[00:54:46] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:54:47] Jim Curtis: You know, the more, if you do two hours a day, [00:54:50] then you're, then you have even a bigger dent. But just say start with 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes at night.[00:54:55]
[00:54:55] Jim Curtis: When you wake up and before you go to bed, 'cause your mind is in a natural theta state, and a theta state is [00:55:00] basically hypnosis. It's very suggestible.
[00:55:01] Dr. Taz: Hmm.
[00:55:02] Jim Curtis: And so before bed [00:55:05] you can start to ask your mind questions. You know, show me the... Or, or give it [00:55:10] directives. Show me whatever it is that you wanna accomplish.
[00:55:13] Jim Curtis: Show me the next step and to [00:55:15] accomplish my goal. You know, um, show- And
[00:55:17] Dr. Taz: this is, this should be blue light away from [00:55:20] you, just by yourself in bed.
[00:55:22] Jim Curtis: Yeah, that's the next part.
[00:55:24] Dr. Taz: Okay. Oh, oh, okay.
[00:55:24] Jim Curtis: So [00:55:25] first- Let me be
[00:55:25] Dr. Taz: quiet. All
[00:55:25] Jim Curtis: right. So- First in the morning, uh- Yeah ... first in the morning, get yourself into a peak [00:55:30] state by doing some meditation or self-hypnosis.
[00:55:33] Jim Curtis: Uh, and at night, direct your [00:55:35] mind by give, writing directives out, reading them, putting next to your bed stable. You know, I do this yellow [00:55:40] butterfly manifestation technique- Mm-hmm ... for people. Um, if someone wants to find it, they can find it [00:55:45] easily on my stuff, but it just shows how you can prime your reticular activating system.
[00:55:48] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:55:49] Jim Curtis: The next [00:55:50] step is shut, stop watching the news.
[00:55:52] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:55:53] Jim Curtis: No, if you have [00:55:55] CNN on in the background or you're like, "Mm, I wanna watch Family Feud in the night, in the news," like [00:56:00] please shut it off. Mm. Stop.
[00:56:01] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:56:02] Jim Curtis: And the next part is, if you're gonna continue to do a few [00:56:05] hours a day on social media, know that the algorithm picks up and [00:56:10] will serve you more of whatever you're interested in.
[00:56:12] Jim Curtis: And what you're interested in [00:56:15] is it deems by what, not what you like and save and all that, but what you spend more than [00:56:20] four seconds watching.
[00:56:20] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:56:21] Jim Curtis: So if you're in your algorithm and you get caught in the news again, "Oh, there's [00:56:25] another war, there's another thing," and you're go- Right ... you're spending like, "Oh, let me just see what they have to say."
[00:56:28] Jim Curtis: Yeah. And now all of a sudden [00:56:30] you've ingested f- 10 seconds of, you know, a piece of content that [00:56:35] is like that, then, um, then it will serve you more and more and more and more and more, and you'll get in [00:56:40] that alg- algorithmic loop. So I would say if you're gonna continue to scroll, [00:56:45] scroll really f- as soon as you see it, scroll it.
[00:56:47] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:56:48] Jim Curtis: Literally less than a second. Go ahead. [00:56:50] As fast as you can, and then start tapping and watching more dog videos, please. There you go. They'll [00:56:55] make you laugh, make you happy. Can't
[00:56:55] Dr. Taz: ever-
[00:56:56] Jim Curtis: What, I
[00:56:56] Dr. Taz: don't- Can't ever get upset with a dog video. Not possible
[00:56:58] Jim Curtis: I don't care if it's like the [00:57:00] videos of people scaring each other.
[00:57:01] Jim Curtis: Right. Whatever's gonna make you laugh.
[00:57:03] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:57:03] Jim Curtis: Just do more, more oxytocin and [00:57:05] endorphins flowing through your body, less fear- Mm ... and things will just start to change.
[00:57:08] Dr. Taz: Hmm. [00:57:10] I love that. Should we just not be on our phones in the morning and at night? If we're- 100% ... naturally in a [00:57:15] theta state, and, like, save it for the middle part of the day?
[00:57:17] Jim Curtis: Yeah. What are you- Yeah ... what are you allowing yourself to be [00:57:20] hypnotized by? Right. So if you're naturally in a theta state and you're watching stuff on your phone, so yes, [00:57:25] that's... I mean, 100%. A lot of people wake up, and the first thing they do is grab their phone. Right. And [00:57:30] i- yeah, that's a hard habit
[00:57:31] Dr. Taz: to break.
[00:57:31] Dr. Taz: I've got patients that, like, wake up in the middle of the night, and they're, they, they tell me they'll go on [00:57:35] their phone until they fall back asleep.
[00:57:36] Jim Curtis: Mm-hmm.
[00:57:36] Dr. Taz: So, and then lastly, you know, you know, [00:57:40] if you're doing this work, is there any sort of... This is a terrible, this is a [00:57:45] typical doctor question, but I'm still gonna ask it.
[00:57:47] Dr. Taz: Is there any kind of, like, timeline? Like, if you do this work [00:57:50] for X amount of time, you start to see these shifts in [00:57:55] couple weeks, 90 days, six months. Like, is-
[00:57:57] Jim Curtis: If you literally do this work- Yes ... right, [00:58:00] you'll see within a couple weeks a change.
[00:58:03] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:58:04] Jim Curtis: A lot of people [00:58:05] come and say to me, "My g- you know, I just saw my girlfriend the other day, and all she kept saying is, like, 'Did you get a haircut?'
[00:58:09] Jim Curtis: [00:58:10] Like, 'What's different? What's wrong?'" Mm-hmm. And when you feel calm and centered, it glows, [00:58:15] and people notice.
[00:58:16] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:58:16] Jim Curtis: And so do this work for yourself, [00:58:20] lowering your mental inflammation, as we call it, the neuroinflammation, and you will start [00:58:25] to feel better within a couple weeks' time.
[00:58:27] Dr. Taz: Amazing. We can do that, guys.
[00:58:29] Dr. Taz: 10 minutes. [00:58:30] I'm, I'm in. 10 minutes- Yeah ... twice a day, and no phones in the morning and at night, [00:58:35] and no doom scrolling.
[00:58:36] Jim Curtis: The funny... Yes, exactly. And the funny thing is, once you start to do 10 minutes twice [00:58:40] a day, you're gonna wanna do longer meditations.
[00:58:41] Dr. Taz: Yeah. Yeah. I have... I love [00:58:45] meditating. I love that time. I don't always get it, but I have to make it a priority, and I'm [00:58:50] sure many people feel the same way, but I think the shifts, the shifts are real.
[00:58:53] Dr. Taz: So your book is out-
[00:58:54] Jim Curtis: [00:58:55] Yes ...
[00:58:55] Dr. Taz: in the next few months, right?
[00:58:56] Jim Curtis: Book of Possibility.
[00:58:57] Dr. Taz: That's right. The Book of Possibility. Where can people find the book? Where can they [00:59:00] find you?
[00:59:00] Jim Curtis: They can find me @jimcurtis1
[00:59:04] Jim Curtis: [00:59:05] on Instagram, or they... jimcurtiscoaching.com is my website.
[00:59:06] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:59:06] Jim Curtis: And the book is available everywhere, so they can just go to Amazon or wherever [00:59:10] they buy books.
[00:59:10] Dr. Taz: Amazing. And then final question. Yes. What makes you whole? [00:59:15]
[00:59:15] Jim Curtis: What makes me whole? Family.
[00:59:17] Dr. Taz: Family.
[00:59:18] Jim Curtis: Yeah.
[00:59:18] Dr. Taz: I... [00:59:20]
[00:59:20] Jim Curtis: That is one. Family and my, uh, dogs.
[00:59:21] Dr. Taz: Uh, what- I- What kind of dogs do you have?
[00:59:24] Jim Curtis: We have [00:59:25] three dogs. Okay. And they're all mutts. They're different breeds- Okay ... big and small. [00:59:30] And every morning, um, you know, those... I, I strive to be more like these dogs. They [00:59:35] go to bed- Aw ... easily and wake up happy, and they're always in a good mood.
[00:59:38] Dr. Taz: I love it. I [00:59:40] am, I'm in love with our dog, too. We have a pug, a very overweight pug.
[00:59:43] Dr. Taz: Love. But he's there. [00:59:45] Well, thank you for taking time to join us today. Thank you for having me. I appreciate it. Yeah.
