What is The State - A Podcast from The State News + Impact 89FM?

The State is a daily rundown of the headlines that matter to the East Lansing, MI community.

Speaker 1:

Hi, and welcome to the state. I'm your host, Rebecca McAvoy. Today's date is 11/24/2025. The forecast predicts that the high will be 50 and the low being 31. The state brings you the stories that matter.

Speaker 1:

MSU hockey comes up short, loses two one in overtime. Anyone can create when there's time and space. Head coach Adam Nightingale said on Tuesday, it's difficult to score when there's not. On Saturday night, the Spartans did just that. With thirty nine seconds left to play, freshman Ford Porter Martin evened the score amid a crowded net, sending the game into overtime.

Speaker 1:

After dropping game one in a five four loss, number one Michigan State hockey looked to split up its series with a number seven Wisconsin. MSU played tighter defense and sharper offense than the previous night, but gave up a power play goal in the second period. Despite tying the game in the final period, the Spartans lost two one in overtime. Fourth quarter collapse extends MSU losing streak to eight. As the third quarter dwindled away, Michigan State football held a 17 to seven lead after a five yard touchdown reception from redshirt junior wide receiver Christian McCray, a lead that came crashing down after a complete fourth quarter collapse as Iowa scored 17 unanswered points in the final fifteen minutes.

Speaker 1:

An electrifying third quarter, filled with productive offense and stifling defense, looked like a turning point for the Spartans in a season of disappointment. Instead, it only led to more dismay as the hawkeyes flipped the script in one twenty to 17 on a last second field goal. Michigan State women's basketball cruises to another victory over Eastern Illinois. In East Lansing, Michigan State women's basketball continue to cruise through its nonconference schedule Thursday night, beating Eastern Illinois a hundred and one fifty three. The Spartans' record improves five o as they continue to dominate opponents on both sides of the ball.

Speaker 1:

The Spartans got off yet another hot start, jumping out early seven o lead and forcing the Panthers to call a timeout. Senior Ford Grace Van Slewyn left her mark in the first quarter, scoring nine points and adding two steals. Sophomore guard Kennedy Blair also made several key plays, but the Panthers hung around only trailing by six at the end of the quarter. At the half, the Spartans had a 45 to 28 lead. The Spartans had 26 points in the paint at half and had already forced 15 turnovers, something they've consistently done well all season.

Speaker 1:

Def played a big role in this game, and Frelick had high praise for her players. Veterans lead the way in Spartans win over Detroit Mercy. In East Lansing, the four captains for Michigan State men's basketball combined 56 points in the Spartans' 84 to 56 victory over Detroit Mercy on Friday. Despite the 28 margin, it wasn't the smoothest path to victory for the Spartans. Self inflicted turnovers and defensive laps left the Spartans head coach Tom Izzo discontent after the win.

Speaker 1:

I was disappointed as you could imagine. I thought that Monte did better job than I did, Izzo said. The Titans did a good job of clogging passing lanes and made it difficult for the Spartans to get the ball inside the paint. MSU committed 12 turnovers and had plenty of empty possessions due to the active hands on Detroit Mercy defense. MSU started the game on a 10 o run with junior forward Coten Carr leading the way.

Speaker 1:

Carr scored eleven first half points as he was a perfect three three from the field and knocked down two three pointers.
