I.
It is 20 hours past midnight on sunny one here in Gwangju, but we’re heading to warmer places to begin the end of 2021 with our December in The Tropics series. A passport-free world awaits on our Round Trip Wednesday and we’re packing up right now for a flight to Auckland, NZ on flight TD054, which takes off later at 9pm with Lizz Kalo aboard to guide us through our trip. And tonight’s global travel is painted in all black as December 8, 2021. This is Danno of course readying my stuff for the ride to ICN and our short jaunt to the North & South Islands, hoping that I don’t butcher my Maori pronunciation later on, thank you for getting with the program tonight. Now, as far as my own favorite countries and people go, it’s hard to beat New Zealand, with gorgeous nature everywhere, friendly people, and some seriously great musicians to provide the soundtrack. We’ve had quite the collection of Kiwi artists on the show that we’ll give more airplay tonight, and hoping to have a few more on the gig moving forward into 2022. So, let’s get ready with Fat Freddy’s Drop off of their last proper LP, and we’ll talk all about the famed dub collective after we race the Raleigh Twenty. This is The Drop.

Fat Freddy’s Drop – Raleigh Twenty

The Drop is on the VIP bus & on our way up to Incheon International tonight for our weekly global trek, this one heading for Auckland, NZ and of course the capital in Wellington on flight TD054. Lizz Kalo will join us aboard the flight and we got plenty to get through until then, as this is no doubt one of my favorite countries in the world.
We just got ourselves peppy & ready with Dallas Tamaira and Fat Freddy’s Drop off their last proper album from 2019, that tune was Raleigh Twenty, which appeared on the Special Edition Part 1 LP from just over two years ago.
The band just keeps doing it, never losing a step. The band found instant success in 2005 with the release of Based On A True Story, which caught fire with heads the world over and resulted in the band putting NZ on the map.
Since that introduction, they have released seven LP’s, with the last two since Special Edition Part 1 being live albums. And let’s just say this right now…if Dallas Tamaira is rockin the vox, you know at least that part is going to be right on point. Just an iconic vocalist.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
So, moving forward we’re gonna rock a couple of our past guests here on The Drop with Sola Rosa along with Arjuna Oakes & Serebii, and then we’ll let the Ladi6 take it home. This is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Aotearoa.
_________

The Drop continues along as we are approaching Incheon International right now, so we gotta get ready to disembark & check in for the flight in part 2. Danno here, feelin the passport in my pocket, making sure the bag is still there, ready to fly tonight with Lizz Kalo in parts 3 & 4 on flight TD054 bound for New Zealand this evening, or as the Maori call it, Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud. We just rocked a few favorites to start the warm-up properly tonight, that was...
Sola Rosa feat Kevin Mark Trail & Sharlene Hector – For The Mighty Dollar (…this tune appeared on the artist’s seventh career album, which was 6 years in the making. Chasing The Sun dropped last year and the deluxe edition came out this year, and that tune featured Kevin Mark Trail of The Streets who has also been on the show & former Basement Jaxx vocalist Sharlene Hector. Big up to all three on this track & especially Andrew & Kevin.)
Arjuna Oakes & Serebii feat Mo Etc – Holding Cell (…two more amazing guests we’ve had on the show, these two just in late August. This is the first track on the First Nights EP, which is just a gem of a mini record. Arjuna’s been on the show twice now, but it must be noted that Serebii in his first appearance stole the show with some amazingly funny observations.)
Ladi6 – Ikarus (…this is the moniker of Karoline Fuarose Park-Tamati, who’s made some amazing music and a difference in exposing NZ music & art to the world. We’ll talk more about Ladi6 in hour 2, and it must be noted that’s spelled Ladi6, and it’s kinda hard to find the right way to say it.)
Now let’s finish part 1 tonight with a live joint from the Avantdale Bowling Club, and this is the opening salvo on their Live album from last year in a cut called To Live & Die in AD, and that’s gonna be a wrap for the first fourth this evening as we get off the bus to check in. THIS is The Drop on your Kiwi Round Trip Wednesday to the Weird Bird Archipelago.

II.
The Drop begins to stand in line waiting to check in for flight TD054 tonight. For those just joining us, we are on the way to New Zealand later on with Lizz Kalo, and we’re doing our usual warm-up listening this evening to prep for the experience. Danno here, of course, making sure the tech stuff runs smooth enough on the radio side, and we just opened the 2nd stanza with...
The Black Seeds – Out of Light (…this is the opening stanza to the Wellington-based dub collective’s 2012 album Dust & Dirt. Interesting interrelated history with Fat Freddy’s Drop that we’ll talk about in hour 2 with Lizz, along with a famous face that was once part of the crew as well, so hope that we can mark you present on the flight and that nobody argues in front of the map.)

Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
So let’s get to some acoustic stuff for the next block, and let me attempt to rock a bit of Maori in the aftermath. Up next we have Aaradhna to be followed by Lorde & Makaira Berry, all of which we’ll let you know about side opposite the soundings. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to The North & South Islands.
_________
The Drop continues as we reach the departure gate for flight TD054 to Auckland this evening. Man, lotsa security & screenings to get through and I need a little sip before we get on the flight, but before I find a bar, let’s get to the recap of those last three joints we just threw into space...
Aaradhna – I’m Not The Same (…this is off another album from 2012 called Treble & Reverb, and we’ll talk more about Aaradhna Patel further with Lizz Kalo, as she’s picked a gem from this artist’s discography for our 2nd hour tonight while we’re there.)
Lorde – Mata Kohore (Stoned At The Nail Salon) (…an interesting little EP put out by Lorde after she released her first album in 5 years called Solar Power, and as you may have guessed, these are alternate covers of her album sung in Maori, the local native language of the islands.)
Makaira Berry feat Hamiora Tuari & Pere Wihongi - Tōrea (…another Maori tune right here, with the title meaning black-winged stilt, which is a seabird native to New Zealand. Makaira Berry is a native singer that is a bit of a new & local phenomenon, but this tune is very nice stuff, and there’s more if you dig deeper.)

Okay, so the lady just blurted out final call to board, so we gotta sip quick and get in line, but not before we have a little Hope from Fat Freddy’s Drop to complete the circle, and this is from the Lock-In LP from last year for those keeping score at home. THIS is The Drop now boarding flight TD054 for Aotearoa and that’s a wrap for the first half.
