"In The Den" with host Logan Brumley covers everything from the NC State Wolfpack's NCAA, intramural and club sports. "In The Den" is a podcast from WKNC 88.1 FM HD-1/HD-2 at NC State University.
Logan Brumley 0:01
Hello and welcome to WKNC official sports podcast and the den today, we're going to be going over the
Logan Brumley 0:10
volleyball games for the past week. I'll be going over their win against South Carolina, and they're lost against
Logan Brumley 0:17
Coastal Carolina. We're going to be going over the Wake Forest game last Thursday, and then the Duke football game coming up this Saturday.
Logan Brumley 0:25
We'll be going over women's soccer I have it's been a few weeks since I talked about them. We're going to kind of give another update and kind of look at who they have this upcoming weekend, because they got themselves a gauntlet this weekend. And we'll be finishing by talking about another event that's going on this weekend with the Adidas cross country
Logan Brumley 0:47
competition and carry so get your headphones on and let's get straight to it all right. So I know I got some juicy football content coming up ahead, but I'm going to talk about volleyball first.
Logan Brumley 1:00
So for the South Carolina game with the
Logan Brumley 1:03
tip off tournament NC State, they won three and one. And I thought it was a really good
Logan Brumley 1:11
game for them, even though they did lose the first set.
Logan Brumley 1:16
You know, it was definitely they had some mistakes. They were had a series of attack errors
Logan Brumley 1:23
that gave South Carolina that 10, three scoring streak, the quenched first set.
Logan Brumley 1:28
And you know, a lot of the big name freshmen and some of the more skilled defensive players when they kind of have to carry the load, a lot of mistakes are made. Rebecca ring did score a lot on that set, though,
Logan Brumley 1:43
for the second set, a lot of crucial blocks that occurred from Dorsey, Talia Francom and Clara Fondren,
Logan Brumley 1:55
and basically those were kind of big blocks
Logan Brumley 1:59
that kind of led to little scoring blocks to help them secure that second set.
Logan Brumley 2:07
For the third set, there was multiple scores by Bryant Cropper and Jordan Smith,
Logan Brumley 2:16
and let's see
Logan Brumley 2:20
Eliza for our she's been kind of getting into this big role of dishing out assist as well, and that helped to quench that, particularly in this game and with the other game we're going to mention
Logan Brumley 2:31
and closing it off. In that last set, they had about 34% accuracy, which isn't amazing, but I think they finished with like 260 on a game overall,
Logan Brumley 2:42
and they went up to eight points before, you know, Courtney Bryant, she had to come in and quench it. Shout out to you know, on the South Carolina team, Sarah Jordan had 36 assists, and Alayna Johnson, NIA Hill, 29 total kills.
Logan Brumley 3:00
16 Hills is a career high at this point by Courtney, Bryant, Claire Vondren, she has gotten 31% accuracy on her own with five kills. Sushia Masha, she works, had 21 digs, Elaisa Villar and Ashley Mullen had 42 assists combined, compared to South Carolina is 42 team wide.
Logan Brumley 3:24
So,
Logan Brumley 3:26
you know, I was really happy with that win,
Logan Brumley 3:29
but I was not too happy with the loss, because that kind of build on those early issues that I mentioned with trying to handle errors.
Logan Brumley 3:40
So it was Coastal Carolina and the wolf pack Invitational.
Logan Brumley 3:46
They lost three to one
Logan Brumley 3:49
with Coastal Carolina. They had a really strong offense in this game. They hit
Logan Brumley 3:54
like 45.7 in a first set.
Logan Brumley 3:58
In that second set there,
Logan Brumley 4:02
okay with the second set
Logan Brumley 4:05
NC State actually wanted, thanks to
Logan Brumley 4:08
Jordan Smith, she was kind of the head honcho for that set. Of course, Claire Vondren and Courtney Bryant also had good performances.
Logan Brumley 4:17
And certainly to help that Coastal Carolina actually led the errors in that set, and that was kind of key to winning that second set.
Logan Brumley 4:24
Can't say the same about the third set, where goes to Carolinas. Jaylan stout came in to help get an eight one lead with, of course, some errors, and they almost came back with the help of Sydney Daniels and McFadden, uh Haley McFadden, who are both coming off the bench and doing just as well as our starters, but a bad set and some scoring errors kind of killed the momentum. And goes to Carolina, crease that third set,
Logan Brumley 4:54
and also that force that even though it was kind of a back and forth between them, I.
Logan Brumley 5:00
Uh, Jay went out. She had that uh,
Logan Brumley 5:04
big scorn streak with the blend of errors. I was kind of something to repeat. But then Emily Fowler, she had 17 kills and 16 assists. Three of those kills came to clinch the game. Um,
Logan Brumley 5:17
see, so, another couple more shout outs from for Coastal Carolina, 22 digs. For Bailey Earnhardt, 10 kills and three blocks for Anna Rita
Logan Brumley 5:29
Courtney, Brian, she had another career high with 21 kills and she had 17 digs. Lisa four had 25 assists and 18 digs
Logan Brumley 5:38
and some service aces as well, and shout out to freshman JORDAN SMITH with 14 of her own kills.
Logan Brumley 5:48
So when we win, it's because our freshmen just kind of come in and just bang it out. You know, I'm kind of happy with the increased roles, especially since I think they should get as much reps as I can head into
Logan Brumley 6:03
United conference competition,
Logan Brumley 6:07
it's just, you know, kind of big pattern with woos, and is just their inexperience at this high of a level, and all the errors that kind of come with it, which I think is to be expected from a
Logan Brumley 6:20
Growing team, but it's just like when you don't have Courtney Daniels as the big star and Ashley Mullen assistant sushi match, he works giving out to digs, even though she is also a freshman, she's kind of
Logan Brumley 6:34
got her own role as the Libero, and she's been playing that really well. It's just it's gonna have take some experience. It's gonna take a little bit more from the bench, because, you know, the bench and defensive players, when it comes to their turn to score, they can make mistakes, even though
Logan Brumley 6:51
Sydney, Daniel is always a floor. Who else did I mention? Claire Vondren? I thought they had big step ups.
Logan Brumley 7:01
I just would like to see more and kind of see things get figured out head into the next tournament, the VCU Invitational, which hopefully will win. But I'm not really going to cover it too strongly. We've got a lot to go over today, but next episode, I believe I will go over Duke and UNC, because that's kind of the weekend double header where it was like,
Logan Brumley 7:29
I mean, it's technically a double header. It's UNC on
Logan Brumley 7:34
Friday and Duke on Sunday, but that's the start of our conference play, at least. So watch out.
Logan Brumley 7:46
I guess that's where all I had to say on that part.
Logan Brumley 7:50
You know, just more experience cut down on the errors, and NC State would do just fine.
Logan Brumley 7:55
All right, coming up next, we got the football I'll be going over to Wake Forest and what to expect from Duke. So that uh, awake forest game was pretty good, right?
Logan Brumley 8:10
Three and oh, now in the season, there's two big compacts in that game. You know, early on with the
Logan Brumley 8:17
a big return, followed by that big pass and a big run to weep by two touchdowns in like less than five minutes before
Logan Brumley 8:27
Justin jolly comes in, he gets that touchdown. I mean, I think you've seen a game. I don't think I have to kind of go through all of it,
Logan Brumley 8:37
but I just kind of like to talk about at least Sean Brown got that pressure. And I say a sure we got that pick six.
Logan Brumley 8:47
And then, of course, that second comeback with Robbie Ashford
Logan Brumley 8:51
again, his own rushing touchdown, which was offset by Keenan Jackson again, his, I think, his first touch on the season. So good for him.
Logan Brumley 9:03
And then, of course, another game coaching interception, this time, I think, to Robbie royal the third. So look at that. People who said this past defense sucks and we get two game winning interceptions and two consecutive games. How about that?
Logan Brumley 9:21
Still kind of suck though. I believe there were a lot of big throws that could have been prevented.
Logan Brumley 9:27
There was, you know, Chris Barnes, he had that 70 yarder early on, and he had a good game in that first quarter,
Logan Brumley 9:34
any fly. His only catch was 42 yarder, and they were both wide open on those deep routes.
Logan Brumley 9:42
I mean, they did fine holding ash for the 60% accuracy in two chat sounds,
Logan Brumley 9:50
but I think it was more of Ashford losing a game than NC State's defense winning it. And what I mean is that
Logan Brumley 9:58
Ashford is not an elite.
Logan Brumley 10:00
Quarterback, and I
Logan Brumley 10:03
think it was just once they got the pressure on him, they were able to make mistakes. I don't think there was any
Logan Brumley 10:09
genius level defensive scheme. Maybe I'm just kind of looking at it for like, confirmation bias, but I didn't see anything exceptional with that.
Logan Brumley 10:20
So, you know, the pressure could have been more, especially on the pass and defense.
Logan Brumley 10:26
Um, I guess a little bit more of like a what went well? What didn't? I forgot I'm doing this segment now.
Logan Brumley 10:34
So what went well, the CJ Bayway Heisman run claims another victim, three touchdowns, 72% accuracy.
Logan Brumley 10:44
I'm going to look at the lack of a true number one receiver as a benefit, just because it makes us look versatile.
Logan Brumley 10:52
Because, like, you know, you get your real fast guys on deep routes if you want to trick
Logan Brumley 10:58
them up, and then you can kind of make jolly run a little short route, kind of create that separation between the safeties and corners and the linebackers, who, if it looks like their Blitz and are will flex or load in it. Maybe you can make something work there. That's kind of what I had in mind when I mentioned that if I had to say a top three, Noah Rogers, Justin, Joey, Wesley, Grimes, Keenan Jackson, he popped off, I guess I can't, I'm just gonna give Damon random ones, uh,
Logan Brumley 11:27
Hollywood's mothers. He's wearing them back, but he's got, got a great game today. I mean, he was vital for getting a change move and setting up scores where, um,
Logan Brumley 11:39
17 points out of I think the 34 total scored in that game came from Hollywood smothers himself like came from drives where he got them into the
Logan Brumley 11:50
red zone. So I guess, let's say, for instance, he was stuffed on this place. I'm sure maybe CJ Bailey's arm could have gotten him there, but you can't be certain. You could definitely would have gone down to like 10 or 14, which they still would have won, sure,
Logan Brumley 12:08
but you don't like it to be that close, especially since now, I feel like NC State could seriously talk about being ranked
Logan Brumley 12:17
and actually being a good football team. Um,
Logan Brumley 12:22
let's see. Second half defense. I thought was great, three punts and two turnovers against Wake Forest, including, I'm not gonna include the sack where harsh got ejected, but the other sack tied 24-24 by Travali Pricerushi. That was a good one.
Logan Brumley 12:39
They held. This is why I say
Logan Brumley 12:43
that Wake Forest quarterback lost in the game, because
Logan Brumley 12:49
NC State has not proven that they could hold a quarterback 24 to 40 passing yards and
Logan Brumley 13:00
two rushing yards in the second half. I believe they could if they had a quarterback like I'm not going to disrespect Robbie Ashford like that, actually,
Logan Brumley 13:09
but
Logan Brumley 13:12
so I apologize. I take that back, but 40 yards pass in the second half. Net, two rushing touched down, yards and oh and six on third down, that is just something special that I don't think you can see every week.
Logan Brumley 13:27
Um, I don't even think you see that from like, the best defenses in like the country, like, I don't think who's the best defense out there in college football, you know what? Even just the SEC you see
Logan Brumley 13:42
trying to think Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech can hold
Logan Brumley 13:47
Cade klubnik to 40 pass in the arts,
Logan Brumley 13:52
but
Logan Brumley 13:54
I don't know. I just think that's lightning in a bottle. You may not see it next week with Duke. I'll get a little bit more into that second half. Offense was great too.
Logan Brumley 14:05
You know, get the weed scored 17.
Logan Brumley 14:10
The defensive line really stifled
Logan Brumley 14:15
Ashford that were sold into more incompletions. But I'm not complaining. What I'm complaining about is the penalties, 10 penalties of 94 yards, including the ejection,
Logan Brumley 14:28
even we split between offense defense halves. So it this is a team problem. This isn't something where it kind of got fixed
Logan Brumley 14:36
at halftime. It was real. It was kind of a thorn on
Logan Brumley 14:42
NC State side. I did not record how much like, how many like touchdowns were made from drives that were extended by penalties, but there was like one in every drive. It felt like,
Logan Brumley 14:54
Um,
Logan Brumley 14:55
okay, no, I did mention 12 points from five to 10x yards given by the D.
Logan Brumley 15:00
Defense suggests a horse caller by broadcast mentioned harsh multiple times.
Logan Brumley 15:07
I thought the start was a little slow
Logan Brumley 15:10
with the reliance on the run game.
Logan Brumley 15:14
But if he, if CJ Bailey, doesn't continue to positive momentum with his arm,
Logan Brumley 15:20
it could become a problem. I I just kind of worried, because if you get a really strong team in here, they could just knock them out. I could see NC stay getting blown out,
Logan Brumley 15:30
if,
Logan Brumley 15:32
if CJ Bailey had to rely too much of his arm,
Logan Brumley 15:36
like Hollywood smothers this key to this team winning, in my opinion. But I shouldn't really go into too much rambling. I just think it's really important for this offensive line and running backs
Logan Brumley 15:51
to
Logan Brumley 15:54
let's see
Logan Brumley 15:57
what was I gonna say.
Logan Brumley 15:59
This offensive line just needs to make sure the high Woods mothers does not get stopped, like for instance. I mean, this game, I thought Hollywood smothers had a great game, but there were still 10 tackles for losses, including eight rushing attempts at zero or less yards.
Logan Brumley 16:15
Um,
Logan Brumley 16:17
they did give off a sack. I know. I know I can't, uh,
Logan Brumley 16:22
complain too much about it, but I want to because 10 tackles for losses is
Logan Brumley 16:29
not great.
Logan Brumley 16:31
I just
Logan Brumley 16:32
that's eight rushing attempts. I mean, if he averages, like, what, I think 3.5 yards a rush, that's it's two first downs. I'm being a little nit picky here, but that's two first downs. That's a lot they could do,
Logan Brumley 16:49
and opening up the path. I mean, once you stuff the run, what do you gotta do? You gotta pass
Logan Brumley 16:55
and I mean, the deficit comes up to CJ Bailey and the rest of the team, I don't know,
Logan Brumley 17:03
plus the running back, death, isn't that great? Jayden, Scott Will Wilson, I know they need more time and more reps, averaging three yards and nine runs. It's terrible.
Logan Brumley 17:16
Okay, so I'll kind of wrap it up, because I'm kind of rambling on here,
Logan Brumley 17:22
gave the offensive MVP of this week to Justin Joly with his you know, I try not to give it to the quarterback automatically. I thought Bailey played great today, but
Logan Brumley 17:34
two touchdowns, and a lot of them were from more from his route running, because, you know, he tripped at that one in the first trying to remember what he did for the second one. I just know he was open for that second one too.
Logan Brumley 17:48
Um,
Logan Brumley 17:49
and I
Logan Brumley 17:52
put it down like, after that game, Hollywood mothers was the Whedon um
Logan Brumley 17:59
running back in the nation when it came to yards, like, total yards, but that was Thursday, and the rest of them played a little later. Dang. He's not even top five anymore.
Logan Brumley 18:10
He's six. He's six in the country, Justice Haynes got like eight extra yards on him.
Logan Brumley 18:19
See, he's gotta be Yeah, he's the best running back in a conference, though, so
Logan Brumley 18:24
beat that. Um, that's great. I was not expecting him to pop off like this. I don't think anyone really did.
Logan Brumley 18:33
What else can I say?
Logan Brumley 18:35
Yeah, he's got almost a like he's got 90 yards in the next guy, Micah Ford from Stanford,
Logan Brumley 18:42
but Justin jolly, he got to two touchdowns. He deserves the MVP. Sean brown deserves defensive MVP, 12 total tackles. And of course, that past deflection for Isaac Shirley. You know, a lot of honorable mentions of essay of Shirley, Travali price and Robbie royal for the big defensive plays. But I just like Sean Brown. I've been sold on him for a while.
Logan Brumley 19:06
You know, who's not gonna like him do?
Logan Brumley 19:11
Okay? So, um, I mentioned some time ago, a couple episodes ago, about the Tobacco Road rivalry, and like how the four big college football teams in North Carolina to face off, and whoever is wins the most night game between them is get some bragging rights. It's weird that. Um, so this is like the only amount that of coverage of that until like
Logan Brumley 19:39
late November, like we're talking rivalry weekend and a couple weeks before. So,
Logan Brumley 19:46
Oh, well.
Logan Brumley 19:49
So kind of just sorry. I'll kind of just let that go,
Logan Brumley 19:55
and I'll just focus on I'll bring that back up later. Just know that.
Logan Brumley 20:00
If it ended today, NC State would be the winner.
Logan Brumley 20:04
They're the best college football team in North Carolina. I think they'll keep that title.
Logan Brumley 20:09
But Duke, former NC State grad assistant and current head coach, Manny Diaz, is looking to continue the highly successful 2020s era for Duke, he brings back offensive coordinator Jonathan Brewer and defensive coordinator Jonathan patke,
Logan Brumley 20:28
but they they may not be ranked, but are ready to prove themselves a channel challenge any team head into the ACC tag, and
Logan Brumley 20:35
that's all the nice things I'll say about them,
Logan Brumley 20:39
because they who
Logan Brumley 20:41
two blowout losses, one against nine, number 19, Illinois, and the other by Tulane. Who should be ranked by now? I believe they're ranked. They should be. They're good.
Logan Brumley 20:55
Let's see. They are not ranked. Sadly, they have 33
Logan Brumley 21:03
votes. Though, NC State still can't get even one. Oh, NC State's got four. I got four votes. That's much as SMU and a little less in Clemson.
Logan Brumley 21:14
Look at that. We're finally starting to get into the discussion,
Logan Brumley 21:19
kind of an afterthought, but I'll take it. Um, where was I?
Logan Brumley 21:27
They did get blown up twice, but
Logan Brumley 21:33
to say Duke has passed heavy. That's an understatement. That's That's kind of what I took from them, that they kind of do rely on it. They have a three running back rotation with Anderson Castle, Jaquez Moore and Nate Shepard.
Logan Brumley 21:46
But Duke does kind of rely more on the fast tempo spread often. So what they do is like, um,
Logan Brumley 21:53
just kind of like the short intermediate routes where Daria Mensah the quarterback for Duke. He can get the ball and he can keep his eye on the guy. It's no problem, because he can just get it out quickly. This isn't like garitana,
Logan Brumley 22:08
where, like he, like you, keep his eyes on the quarterback, even for like, longer routes. This is something like he can get the ball out quick, and even though the offensive lines collapsing on him,
Logan Brumley 22:20
it doesn't really seem to affect them too much, like I haven't seen too much struggle in the pocket, but I'll go a little bit more into that later.
Logan Brumley 22:29
I'd say the biggest stars receiver wise,
Logan Brumley 22:33
Cooper, bargate and Andrel Anthony. But I mean, they have, like, a couple guys who get double digit receptions, and then, like, some of the guys who don't have like, three, four passing touchdowns, it's weird, um,
Logan Brumley 22:50
their defense
Logan Brumley 22:52
is sort of this weird, Ultra Hybrid kind of defense. Um,
Logan Brumley 22:58
they have this thing called a fiber, which is like your defensive end that can transition to a linebacker, and then a star who can transition from linebacker to safety, so they can do multiple defensive fronts depending on the situation, like, four, three, yeah, 4-3-4, 4-4-3,
Logan Brumley 23:15
or even, 3-3-5, if They really wanted to, but it
Logan Brumley 23:20
hasn't been working. Um,
Logan Brumley 23:23
so now we're gonna see my feeble attempt at scouting a football game. Are you ready for that?
Logan Brumley 23:33
So just a couple notes I made from watching, you know, two lane in Illinois.
Logan Brumley 23:39
I mentioned the quick routes. Um, there is sometimes where Mensah, he will be able to roll out the pocket, and that's when I kind of see him making those multiple reads and being able to get it to different guys, but usually to just kind of go for the guys outside the hashes. Um,
Logan Brumley 23:58
see, I didn't say his first name, Bargate with out of the slot. He's a real athletic receiver, too, but I would say be more focused on the guys outside of hashes, because that's really who they target more often than not.
Logan Brumley 24:13
Offensive line gave men so plenty of time, and his poise is really secure.
Logan Brumley 24:21
So
Logan Brumley 24:24
there was a little bit more uh, deep route efficiency with two land, and it was Illinois. And so we'll probably get a little bit more deep stuff, I believe in this game, because we're not Illinois level, but we are kind of at Tulane level,
Logan Brumley 24:39
pretty close, at least. So I would say, keep an eye out for that.
Logan Brumley 24:48
With Illinois, they were able to get a lot of pressure on him early on. However, all
Logan Brumley 24:56
Myers just a pretty good quarterback, he was able to minimize mistakes and took a few.
Logan Brumley 25:00
Advantage of the zone defense that Duke was carrying, because I did see a lot of situations where the receivers in no night were able to out do Duke,
Logan Brumley 25:10
like I seen them tripping. I've seen them wide open.
Logan Brumley 25:15
And the whole thing with the
Logan Brumley 25:20
Duke's defense is that once you get past defensive line, because the defense finally can put pressure on the quarterback and force him to run. That's why we saw with two lane where occasionally there wasn't a design quarterback run, but he was still able to get a lot of yards. Once you get past that defensive line, you're good to go, because
Logan Brumley 25:40
they don't do too much tackling on their own. I feel like a lot of their tackling just comes from getting them out of bounds on the sidelines.
Logan Brumley 25:53
Sometimes even took multiple players to knock them out of bounds when it wasn't necessary. I would say NC State's a little better at tackling defense, pass defensively,
Logan Brumley 26:05
but shoot, yeah, just as long as they're able to get the yard. I mean, whoever our best yak guys are, that's kind of who we need to get on them, because I don't know how Duke were able to wrap their arms around and get them down consistently. So he had rushers. I definitely saw them kind of biting on fake runs. So I'd say be prepared for CJ Bailey to not use his legs as much, because Duke might just over correct themselves on this because a lot of is two lanes quarterbacks runs for touchdowns were because
Logan Brumley 26:45
Duke's defense would just kind of bite on the quarterback fake,
Logan Brumley 26:50
like, you know, when they do the fake hand off and they run like I've seen it, where the edge would just, he would kind of go for it, hesitate, and then during a hesitation, goes, Oh, he's got the ball. He's already in the end. Sound, what the heck?
Logan Brumley 27:03
So, yeah, you don't want any of that.
Logan Brumley 27:08
And the only other things I mentioned is turnover battle. They've kind of lost it.
Logan Brumley 27:15
Mensa definitely under throws the what's it
Logan Brumley 27:20
called?
Logan Brumley 27:23
Definitely under throws the ball
Logan Brumley 27:27
on his interceptions, and
Logan Brumley 27:31
just, I can't handle a good running quarterback, and that's what CJ Bailey is.
Logan Brumley 27:37
So let me just show you with matchups. So first up
Logan Brumley 27:43
Duke passing offense. NC, say passing defense.
Logan Brumley 27:48
Men, says a good quarterback and putting pressure on him. I mean, it won't be easy, because he seems like I mentioned, kind of calm and collected.
Logan Brumley 27:56
Keep a guy eye out. Of course. Cooper got bar gate and Chris Sean Brown, those are guys who I think will be able to make good plays if NC State ever keeps their eyes off of them.
Logan Brumley 28:07
Hesnah likes the mid tier routes and kind of the quicker ones. Like,
Logan Brumley 28:16
I believe they'll do it where, like they, I think they're one of those teams that tried to do bubble routes and get cute with that, where it'd be like,
Logan Brumley 28:24
Oh, it's third and 10. You're gonna run a bubble route, hope you get the first down. Yeah, good luck.
Logan Brumley 28:31
But my best trust for the defensive backs of NC State grows with each week.
Logan Brumley 28:39
They've gotten stronger, sure, but this is the best quarterback they face by far. Maybe you could debate it with Chandra Morris. I can't
Logan Brumley 28:48
you know, big yards on deep routes, and Duke would be able to take advantage of that. They'll be able to get big yards out of
Logan Brumley 28:58
NC. Say, it's just about, can I keep him out the end zone.
Logan Brumley 29:02
I think harsh Sloan price. What else was there Cleveland? I think they can get pressure on Mensah. So I think it would just depend on how he handles it, but he seems like he'll be just fine. Duke wins that kind of match up.
Logan Brumley 29:20
I'll go into
Logan Brumley 29:22
Duke's passing defense and NC State's passing offense next.
Logan Brumley 29:27
You know, both teams have abysmal pass coverages,
Logan Brumley 29:32
so you know, Tulane was able to take advantage of that defense, and when I mentioned the bubble routes for first downs to wing did that on them. Duke tries it, then they can't defend it, even though that's something they do.
Logan Brumley 29:49
It's frustrating sometimes, because it's like, okay,
Logan Brumley 29:53
you see how this play works. It just doesn't, I don't know if you don't have the guys for it. I.
Logan Brumley 30:00
I don't know.
Logan Brumley 30:04
Let's see.
Logan Brumley 30:06
Where was I? While the flexibility on defense does give them the slight edge, I think NC State, as I mentioned, has the flexibility of their receivers. So it's more about like
Logan Brumley 30:17
it's going to be what I thought we were going to get from Virginia, where it's going to be a quarterback duel, it's going to be an arm off, but CJ Bailey has proven more because he's gotten in another arms off in one. Chandler Morris,
Logan Brumley 30:33
J'Mari Taylor, so
Logan Brumley 30:37
let's see. Plus, I haven't seen Duke really do anything against tight ends. I think Illinois to lane kind of relied on receivers or quarterback legs.
Logan Brumley 30:48
So what's the account what creative passing plays can be done? But I don't know, given that state,
Logan Brumley 30:57
all right, Duke's rushing offense versus NC State's rushing defense,
Logan Brumley 31:03
it seems, after our last game, I think you know, Nate Shepard and jock has more gonna get the ball more. Castles is pretty athletic, though he's he's got, as they say, that dog in him,
Logan Brumley 31:16
but this online is good enough to keep tackles from Moss from happening in the way that Wake Forest was able to do on us, us, like I'm playing with them. But this part of the game is largely delegated to just short distance, like your fourth and
Logan Brumley 31:33
one, your third and two. So it's probably not going to be utilized as much as the arm,
Logan Brumley 31:40
because, if I am not mistaken, I think that Duke is able. I mean, yeah, Duke throws it probably like 3040,
Logan Brumley 31:49
yeah, 39 times the game.
Logan Brumley 31:53
So
Logan Brumley 31:55
I just there's nothing from this, uh,
Logan Brumley 31:59
rushing game that kind of gives you a reason to be like, Oh, I'm scared. For
Logan Brumley 32:07
Nate Shepard,
Logan Brumley 32:10
yeah.
Logan Brumley 32:12
Plus, NC State has been able to be good at stopping and run. Just look at what happened with ECU even though we were they did have all off season to prepare for that. And Demon Clairborne rushing touchdown, and Jamari Taylor was really good. I doubt we'll get Jamari Taylor performance on us. In particular,
Logan Brumley 32:33
I think that he's just a good running back, and I don't think that Duke has a strong enough
Logan Brumley 32:40
running game to necessarily warrant, I
Logan Brumley 32:46
don't want to say, not being threatened by it, but Sheesh, I mean, you gotta do something.
Logan Brumley 32:55
I give it to plus, of course, defensive line Cleveland, harsh, Sloan Fordham Brown, we got good defensive guys who can stuff runs.
Logan Brumley 33:06
So NC State advantage just because of Duke.
Logan Brumley 33:13
And the last thing I'll mention, Duke rushing defense, not last second to last, Duke, rushing defense. NC State, rushing offense.
Logan Brumley 33:22
NC State has been able to take advantage of those quarterback runs.
Logan Brumley 33:28
Two lanes showed that Duke has not been able to prepare, as I mentioned before, I think they'll over correct,
Logan Brumley 33:34
but I think they'll open up creativity and shared responsibility of running the ball between CJ Bailey and Hollywood smothers. I think Hollywood smothers would definitely need to do more with this legs in this game, especially, I think the backups will just out of safety for smothers. But I believe CJ Bailey was like, could be able to trip up,
Logan Brumley 33:57
um, the players on that regards, but Duke expression defense does have the little advantage of
Logan Brumley 34:06
seven, tackle for loss, six and 15, a third and fourth, I think, against two lane. So if you can't hit one in the bottle, they can stifle this rushing defense just as much as NC State can on Duke.
Logan Brumley 34:20
So Well, I'm not expecting it, kind of like I'm not expecting what I mentioned before,
Logan Brumley 34:30
a 40 yards pass and defense in the second half, two rushing yards defense in the second half. That's something that's not going to happen. But Duke
Logan Brumley 34:42
could maybe have like half that level of performance, and it'll be enough to beat NC State, but I give the advantages to state
Logan Brumley 34:54
little bit more. I want to mention special teams wise, um, Todd point, oh, has about 60.
Logan Brumley 35:00
3% accuracy, no longer 47
Logan Brumley 35:04
I think it's going to be finished set for long term. But Koneszki
Logan Brumley 35:09
could if in a set does have a bad game, I will say Duke, they give up that fumble against
Logan Brumley 35:20
Illinois. I think it was Illinois or two lane. They gave up. No, no, no, no. It's definitely two way, because they got the fumble and then the Ratzlef with the two lane quarterback fumbled later.
Logan Brumley 35:33
Let's see
Logan Brumley 35:35
uh for Duke, their primary punters, Kade reynoldson, even though he's only he has even had to use his legs as much this season, only three punts averaging 43 yards in the longer 46
Logan Brumley 35:50
although Noonkester, he's averaging 45
Logan Brumley 35:54
which is third in The SEC. Trying
Logan Brumley 36:00
to think who else would be,
Logan Brumley 36:03
kind of there in that I'm
Logan Brumley 36:08
trying to think who else would be in that territory. Uh, it's definitely not Duke's punter
Logan Brumley 36:15
in I think he is the best in the league, if you look at.
Logan Brumley 36:23
Okay? Jack Stonehouse, Syracuse and
Logan Brumley 36:28
Nick Veltsistars out of Virginia Tech,
Logan Brumley 36:33
both have pretty
Logan Brumley 36:36
big yards and big net. Michael Kern from Cal has a bigger net than Noonkester, so maybe not one of the best, but he's definitely not replaceable,
Logan Brumley 36:47
kind of going on a ramble. Um, Jayden Scott were probably a primary pump returner, just because I think Hoffman might be needed more in a pass game.
Logan Brumley 36:57
And then Peyton Jones, I think their fourth string running back for Duke is their returner average in 19 yard to return.
Logan Brumley 37:07
I'll put the advantage in Duke on that one, but oh well,
Logan Brumley 37:12
they're gonna play probably similar to what they did with Virginia. Went on the ground force, mention, to make mistakes and set up score in place with the arm. Defensively, just keep the pressure and make Mensa make mistakes. I think that's gonna be their formula for the rest of the season. If they can silence that Duke arm, they win piece of cake. All right, I apologize. This episode's running a bit long. We still have two whole segments to go over.
Logan Brumley 37:40
I'll start with the soccer so, you
Logan Brumley 37:44
know, I'll just kind of briefly mention that NC State, they beat FAU to an O.
Logan Brumley 37:51
I think the defense was really good, kind of keeping FAU from really doing anything. Logan Erbis really good.
Logan Brumley 38:02
Let's see Nikola Markovich and Donovan Phillips got goals, and Markovic got an assist,
Logan Brumley 38:09
and getting a big win on the ranked team is going ony continue to build NC State's resume. The
Logan Brumley 38:15
only thing they can do now is just keep going. October 10, this number two Clemson.
Logan Brumley 38:22
So mark your calendars for that. But I thought NC State was really strong the second half. In the first half, they kind of were easing off the pedal aggressively, but I thought it was great. Um, yeah.
Logan Brumley 38:37
I thought it was a great season overall for them, or Yeah,
Logan Brumley 38:42
but the women, so that's a whole different story. Since the last time we talked about them, they've gone one, one and one total into 1/6, and two on a season, I
Logan Brumley 38:52
don't get a win. They tied against Elon
Logan Brumley 38:56
where they could have they were a lot more aggressive, scoring on six shots on goals, but can't get in the net.
Logan Brumley 39:05
Francis Mary Symmes, Jade, Bordelau and Mana Nantaka
Logan Brumley 39:09
are kind of the big three of the offensive front.
Logan Brumley 39:14
And pride of pause, she did have 100% saving accuracy in that game. Same thing with the next game too,
Logan Brumley 39:22
going four and out to be Campbell. Big performance of Mary Francis Symmes, she got her two goals. Jay Bordelau, she finally got a goal. I thought she was going to be the headline of this offense, but it took her until
Logan Brumley 39:38
hold on
Logan Brumley 39:39
the about I about
Logan Brumley 39:44
eighth game you get a goal, uh, Fein Leddekker also got one part of us, five saves. It's a good blood to try to get prepared for Notre Dame, where they retired at halftime from an only early goal from NC.
Logan Brumley 40:00
Wong,
Logan Brumley 40:01
but Notre Dame is just better.
Logan Brumley 40:07
Let's see Annabelle shukwu,
Logan Brumley 40:11
and is the angle got goals. I think angle got the game winning with kind of
Logan Brumley 40:17
the weight goal, and they were really in control of the game past the first 10 minutes, even with a very low shot and goal, they were still able to get things done like defense. Wish there could be more on offense. That's where we all have to say in the matter.
Logan Brumley 40:34
So first up is SMU, I think on Thursday, then Sunday. FSU,
Logan Brumley 40:40
um, SMU has only one point in the stand ins, but the air six, two and one overall. Their most notable win, though, is against North Texas. They have tie at Syracuse for their one and some losses at Wake Forest and Texas Tech, maybe being at NC State would be an advantage for them.
Logan Brumley 41:08
SMU, they only have a 0.78 margin, so like they score about 1.78 goals a game, and they give up one a game. For comparison, NC State has a negative 0.89
Logan Brumley 41:21
but they have a 75% save percentage on shots, and our 11th and a conference with fouls, with 79 total.
Logan Brumley 41:30
So it says some new team is not great. The biggest stars are Nyah rose with the 11 shots on goals, even though she doesn't lead the team in goal. So that's actually Lydia Agnescheck with three
Logan Brumley 41:44
uh Sammy nice has five assists, which is fifth in the conference.
Logan Brumley 41:50
And, I mean, there's this first kind of like what was was with men UNC, 10 of their 11 starters, slash, high rotation players
Logan Brumley 41:59
scored a goal this season.
Logan Brumley 42:03
Uh, who? So that game should be competitive. I don't think the FSC one is going to be, though, just kind of leaving out a little blunt
Logan Brumley 42:13
ever seated ahead, honcho, there's six oh and one with four no at home, I think this game is going to be an away game.
Logan Brumley 42:24
FSU has won a top offenses in the conference with 3.8 goals per game and only 0.6 goals given up per game, which in eight games, they've only given up three goals. I think, whoo, I might not know how to do math.
Logan Brumley 42:43
Wait,
Logan Brumley 42:46
yeah, something like that, four or five goals,
Logan Brumley 42:52
not great.
Logan Brumley 42:54
Um, for us,
Logan Brumley 42:56
although they do have a decent amount of SOG she lead the league - the conference, or the worst in a conference with 100+ fouls on a team.
Logan Brumley 43:06
One of the best goalies in a conference is Addie Todd, with about 90% save accuracy, which is third in the league, and she's lowest in a week with goals against average, like the amount of total goal she's given up. So
Logan Brumley 43:20
maybe with a bigger sample size, she might be a little worse. No, it sounds like she's better, I
Logan Brumley 43:26
don't know, but she's one of the best of the week,
Logan Brumley 43:30
second in the league, and total goals is Wrianna Hudson, with seven, including two game winners. Jordan Dudley has three assists on the team, and Heather Gilchrist has about 85.7%
Logan Brumley 43:45
shot in goal accuracy. I don't think anyone on our teams that high.
Logan Brumley 43:50
It's going to take a massive amount of luck to be FSU, but SMU might get lucky
Logan Brumley 43:58
to be beat by us. Uh,
Logan Brumley 44:02
FSU is one of the strongest teams in the conference. So winning would just require so much luck being able to shut down the offense completely and just bully the goal you were shot in goal attempts. We haven't done either consistently.
Logan Brumley 44:21
Hopefully the best case scenario, FSU Tired Up, tired out by playing UNC on Wednesday, and they're just their hearts, not in the game, and they lose, but they did
Logan Brumley 44:33
beat Louisville at Louisville, Louisville is playing real hot, so
Logan Brumley 44:40
not great.
Logan Brumley 44:43
SMU. They've given up plenty of goals and fouls, and their goalie, I'll be brown, is one of the worst when it comes to stats. So as long as NCC cannot shoot SMU, they could win, but it would require being an offensive stalwart, which they.
Logan Brumley 45:00
Can't really do.
Logan Brumley 45:03
I mean, yeah, there definitely needs to be a
Logan Brumley 45:07
big star in a team. Okay, I put this down. I didn't realize this. Jade Bordelau has three goals on the season, which leads the team in goals.
Logan Brumley 45:19
But no one's really shown ourselves as a permanent score. And what I would say with time their defenses, we kind of come to strong side,
Logan Brumley 45:29
but
Logan Brumley 45:30
I need more. Give the younger guys some reps on offense. Try to do what
Logan Brumley 45:37
NC State do, what the volleyball team is doing. Young scores. Try to something needs to change. Because one six and two is the worst in the conference and one of the worst in the country. They need to figure something out with this,
Logan Brumley 45:53
uh, just, you know, get creative with things. Just get the ball in the net and they'll be fine. They just can't get the ball in there.
Logan Brumley 46:03
Let's see. Pratapas. I think she's finally proven, which I'm happy about. But they still have a big suck streak, and
Logan Brumley 46:14
I'd be fine with given I don't know how to pronounce it. Seen a tozo Some more reps before going into ACC play. I'm sure she'll get some even later, and to see, no disrespect to predis, just in general, Daisy Duda antono, there's this mother players I want to see more of. I'm happy with Daisy do this so far.
Logan Brumley 46:34
Um, we just need to settle precedents for future seasons to have something to build off of for next season. Because so far, it scraps.
Logan Brumley 46:42
That's the luck headed to them. I'll check back up on them late in October, we've got some cross country to go over.
Logan Brumley 46:51
All right, cross country. Let's do this September 9, the 5:55pm
Logan Brumley 46:58
wake med soccer course, NC State's number one in the conference and women's cross country in them, and
Logan Brumley 47:07
the men's is ninth in their regional
Logan Brumley 47:11
last year, NC State finished number one in women's number two in the men's side. Some notable
Logan Brumley 47:18
finishers who are returning from the men's Wesley Larson, Jimmy malarkey and Ryan motondo,
Logan Brumley 47:25
even though they will probably get beat up by Liberty, who beat them out last year, especially since have two top 10 finishers returning with Edwin Kiprop and Tristan merchant, it's notable woman who did well is uh
Logan Brumley 47:41
Grace Hartman, Hannah gates, Kate Putman, Andrew Napoleon, Carolina, Morell, Ellie Shea, Olivia Haas,
Logan Brumley 47:51
they're gonna, you know, whoop some butt coming up, even though Clemson does have a Good Woman squad with
Logan Brumley 47:59
Judy Ksogei, Silbia Jelego, and Gladys Cheonegitch
Logan Brumley 48:13
they finished one, two and three last year with Clemson.
Logan Brumley 48:18
But um, usually just Adidas cross country and carry it. Kind of hosts. A lot of the teams are local. So like, you're NC State, Unc, Virginia, Wake Forest, Duke,
Logan Brumley 48:28
UNCG
Logan Brumley 48:31
Elon,
Logan Brumley 48:34
NC, Central, high point, liberty, you get it.
Logan Brumley 48:39
Uh, so, you know, I don't know if you can go to those games. I don't know if it means anything to talk about cross country, but I just kind of want to highlight that that's going to start picking on, uh, taking off, and eventually they'll be part of my conference and national championship coverage. But either way,
Logan Brumley 48:58
I think we can wrap it up there. Thank you guys for listening. Hope you have a good day.
Logan Brumley 49:04
Next week, we'll be starting our winter sports previews with swimming and diving. We have to do Q NC double header we have right now, I have feedback women's soccer
Logan Brumley 49:15
probably keep that because we're also going feedback football, just to kind of keep on theme.
Logan Brumley 49:21
But oh, well, you know, it's the bees and knees. Have a good day and go pack. Go.
