Punchy, actionable insights and tips to make the life of the team leader a breeze.
[00:00:00] Pia: It is being said that challenger safety democratizes innovation. That's a pretty powerful capacity to have in a team, and so we explore the practical tips and insights to make it happen. I'm Pia.
[00:00:13] Dan: And I'm Dan, and this is Squadify Connects Challenger safety, the final level of psychological safety, according to Timothy Clark, enables teams to cross the innovation threshold together. This means being able to challenge the way the team works, suggest new ways of working, new behaviors, and also feel comfortable with straight talking and to challenge the ideas of others even if they are more senior.
[00:00:40] Pia: So this is a really powerful stage of psychological safety as it doesn't just only allow new ideas to surface and learning from mistakes to occur, but it can prevent. Potentially bad ideas from getting into the real world. Team members feel a confidence and capacity to speak up. Some would argue that global disasters, such as VW Emissions, scandal, Enron, or the crash of the financial institutions just may not have occurred if the teams in those organizations had possessed challenger safety.
[00:01:12] Dan: But often we're just too busy to set aside the time to brainstorm, think, challenge, and discuss. And this is actually a leadership failing Teams need to create that space and the opportunity to explore options together and ultimately to co-create. So think about how you can create that space for this conversation where multiple perspectives are heard and challenges are taken on board.
[00:01:39] Pia: Getting the team comfortable to challenge that status quo is key. So deciding on the types of questions that will prompt the right thinking is really important. Here's some examples. So why do we do it this way? What if we tried this or can I suggest a different way? Giving positive feedback to those that ask questions as well as those that answer them is really valuable. You don't wanna penalize people for making a suggestion and encourage the team to really test their thinking together. What you positively feedback you will enhance as behaviors in your team.
[00:02:15] Dan: So this week take a current challenge or a way of working and give the team the opportunity of 30 or 60 minutes to discuss the way that it's working. Try using the three questions above that we just talked about to encourage the team to challenge the status quo. Then after that, retro the meeting and see what you would do differently next time and how you'll fit this type of meeting into your rhythm routines.
[00:02:38] It's almost a regular practice of challenging the way you do things and almost even once you made the decision, create space for people to have a say, against the idea you've just made, just to really work, test that idea.
[00:02:54] Pia: So that's the deep dive on psychological safety, and we hope that you've really got some practical insights and suggestions from it. Squadify measures the team members' view of their own psych safety, and next week we'll look into that global data and see where teams are thriving, but also where they're sometimes struggling and also what they can do about it. So see you next week.
