I.
It is 20 hours past midnight as fall settles upon the Korean peninsula seemingly to stay, and we are passport in hand ready to travel for this week’s Round Trip. Heading once again to the Pacific Northwest but across the border in Canada’s Vancouver, and tonight is cooled in the light rains as October 13, 2021. This is Danno ready for tonight’s travel through audio exploration segment, no documentation required from studio 2 GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Lizz Kalo naturally will accompany us on our jaunt to Vancouver this evening, a city that naturally has so much musical & artistic talent that it’s difficult to do a mere two hours about it, but we’ll try to pack as much into our radio luggage as possible tonight. However, before we head to the VIP bus bound for ICN, we’ll start with the history in our TIGHT (or) feature for tonight, as it was on this night 35 years ago that another Canadian began a benefit concert series that would go on to not only help those in need, but bring together an all-star cast every year. This is The Drop.

Neil Young – Cinnamon Girl

The Drop is on the bus & on our way to the airport tonight for our Round Trip Wednesday and we are on the way to Vancouver tonight in Canada’s far Southwest. Flight TD047 takes off for British Columbia’s largest city at 9pm sharp with Lizz Kalo of course joining us aboard the flight, and it must be duly noted that in Vancouver you have a city with a thriving indie, folk, and rock scene with some big names you may be surprised by even if you are an avid fan. But anyway, what’s up tonight, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? We just started with our TIGHT (or) feature to begin things, and that was Neil Young with Cinnamon Girl to commence proceedings.
And that is because on this date in 1986, the artist born in Toronto started the Bridge School Benefit Concert Series in support of the non-profit institution that provides education for children with verbal and physical disabilities. Young and his wife Pegi co-founded the school when their son, Ben, was born with cerebral palsy. The all-acoustic concert - featuring performances by Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Tom Petty, and a reunited Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - turns into an annual event that adds many more big-name acts to the roster, including regular guests Pearl Jam.
The inaugural two-day concert is held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, where guest performers arrive with acoustic guitars, ready to entertain for a good cause.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
So let’s get to the warm-up for our Round Trip to Vancouver this evening, and we’ll start with some more indie artists then get to something bigger with dwi starting things followed by daysormay and we’ll close with something all the way live from Japandroids to finish the magic. Naturally, we’ll discuss all the background after the foreground dies down, but for now this is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to BC.
_________

The Drop returns and we’re just coming down the home stretch to the terminal at ICN after our first audio wormhole of the evening. Danno here studio 2 GFN HQ as I am or is it do every single night between 8 & 10pm. Lizz Kalo joins us aboard flight TD047 bound for Vancouver this evening at the top of our 2nd hour, and we just started getting familiar with the destination tonight...
dwi – Freak N Out (…the artist here is the bassist for The Zolas, who are a veteran indie band from Vancouver and quite well-known. This was the artist’s debut solo single and the lead release for Mild Fantasy Violence, released earlier this year.)
daysormay – Just Existing (…this is a trio out of Vernon, BC who are childhood friends that decided to make music and do little else in 6th grade. Now 21, this is the title track to their debut album which just dropped one week ago today, available everywhere.)
Japandroids – Arc of Bar (Live) (…one of the bigger names from Vancouver, this band truly arrived to the world’s attention with the release of Post-Nothing in 2009. This is from their latest release, Massey EFFING Hall, which just came out last year and was of course recorded EFFING live at the famed Toronto auditorium.)
Now the clock keeps on ticking while I blah blah blah but we got space for a couple more cuts here in quarter 1 of our game of audio travels. Up next we’ll switch off the rock with TITUS BANK and a nicely done recent cut called I Do Yeah, and we’ll close with a group called Hamb Sun (note spelling) and our final joint is called On Top of the Roof. THIS is The Drop disembarking from the bus to check in on our Vancouver Round Trip.
TITUS BANK – I Do Yeah
Hamb Sun – On Top of the Roof

II.
The Drop has arrived for check-in and as usual the line is moving slow but for us thankfully that means time is as well. Danno here waiting to check in for flight TD047 tonight on our round trip to Vancouver on Canada’s west coast tonight, and Lizz Kalo of course joins us after the 2nd hour commences aboard the flight. We just started about as slowly as this line is moving, so let’s recap our initial slow burners...
Aidan Knight – These Days (…this is a very talented singer-songwriter and producer who was born just 10 days after the first Bridge School Benefit concert held on this date in 1986. This tune was part of his self-titled debut album, just released last year.)
The New Pornographers – Challenges (…probably the biggest name in rock out of Vancouver that remains active today. The band works as a fluid collective with several big names as part of the overall membership, and we’ll talk more about this when we’re in fair Vancouver with Lizz Kalo in hour 2.)

Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
So we’ll continue to keep the vibe easy but switch it up a bit. Up next is NADUH, an all female quintet that just exudes pure attitude, and we’ll follow that with des hume and Doohickey Cubicle for some easier going. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Vancouver.
_________
The Drop reverberates again on the mic and we are into the final airbreak of part 1 this evening. Danno here, checking my stuff at the departure gate to breezy Vancouver on flight TD047, which takes off at the top of the hour with Lizz Kalo joining us once again. But while we wait to board let’s run down those last few cuts...
NADUH – CHAPSTICK* (…this is an all-female hip-hop R&B collective which is kind of a supergroup of local performers that just had their first release this year as a crew. This tune is their 2nd release after dropping Mawnin previously. Some nice production & flows with this group, lots of sass. Good biz.)
des hume – Wild World (…this is another rather newcomer collective out of the 206 that describes themselves as a “for profit organization dedicated to researching utopian social dynamics.” This is part of a series of standalone singles they’ve put out since 2018, released as the pandemic truly went catastrophic everywhere in April 2020.)
Doohickey Cubicle – Milano Sport (…one thing that must be noted about Vancouver bands is their absolutely amazing monikers and we’ll talk about that more in hour 2 as well. The group is a duo and this appeared on their debut full-length release earlier this year in March called Don’t Fix Anything 😉.)
Okay, so final call to board the plane just blurted out behind me in like 4 different languages, so I gotta jet, but before I do big props to Vancouver band Said The Whale for their excellent Spotify playlist, so we’ll pay tribute with a tune called Show Me Everything cuz they certainly did for us, and to finish it’s a rousing, complex cut called Structure by a band who call themselves Blessed, and I’m honestly surprised there’s not a hashtag there. THIS is The Drop now boarding flight TD047 on your Round Trip to Vancouver and it’s halftime.
Said The Whale – Show Me Everything
Blessed – Structure

Ana Santos - Terror Is Coming
- Interesting artist still working to get a footing and following here in 2021 and doing it on her own.
- She is of Dominican & Liberian descent and calls Vancouver home.
