Five Things Going Right

Five real advances in science, medicine, technology, and the environment, each verified against the original reporting. In this episode: KAIST researchers have analyzed conditions for microbial food industry success and proposed growth strategies; Yale researchers found that AC use cut annual heat-related deaths by half in the U.S., saving more than 5,000; Analysis of 787 brain tumor patients found that minimally invasive laser therapy extends survival by months; Thousands of fin whales, humpback whales, and common minke whales are now gathering off East Greenland where; NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has launched on a three-month, million-mile journey to its final.

What is Five Things Going Right?

Five Things Going Right is a daily five-minute podcast covering real, verifiable progress in science, medicine, technology, and the environment. Every weekday, hosts Grace and Josh walk through five stories that actually happened, each checked against the original reporting from sources like the WHO, the IEA, Nature, and university research. A calm, fact-grounded start to your day. New episodes every weekday morning.

Welcome, this is 5 Things Going Right, the news that's actually good. 5 stories, 5 minutes, all of them true. Hi everyone, I'm Grace. Today is Tuesday, September 1st, 2026. And I'm Josh. Let's get into what we're covering today. Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, or KAIST, have been looking into what it would take for the microbial food industry to really take off. Right. They've proposed some growth strategies for the next generation protein sector. It's a strategic analysis and roadmap, but it's important to note that this doesn't mean microbial foods are commercially viable or at an industrial scale just yet. Yale University researchers have found that air conditioning use has significantly reduced heat-related deaths in the United States. By half, actually, saving more than 5,000 lives each year. However, they also noted that the protective effect of air conditioning levels off after a certain point. On extremely hot days, the risk still rises, even with air conditioning. And access to air conditioning isn't equal across all groups, so these benefits aren't evenly distributed. An analysis from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis reviewed outcomes for 787 brain tumor patients treated with a minimally invasive laser therapy for glioblastoma. The study found that how much of the tumor is removed and when the treatment is given are key factors for longer survival. But it's worth noting that the survival gain is measured in months for what is a terminal diagnosis. This therapy is currently for patients with recurrent, difficult-to-access, or inoperable tumors, not as a primary treatment. Thousands of fin whales, humpback whales, and common minke whales are gathering off East Greenland, a place where they were rarely seen a generation ago. Researchers are linking this change to warmer water, retreating sea ice, and a shift in the whales' feeding grounds. While it's positive for the whale populations, these changes are part of broader shifts in the Arctic environment. NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has launched and is now on a three-month, million-mile journey to its final orbit in deep space. It lifted off at 7.26 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The telescope's mission is to map large regions of the sky at a scale and speed astronomers haven't had before. Catch you next time. That's it for today. That was 5 Things Going Right.
