Hello everyone, welcome back to our podcast. So we have been doing a study on Galatians and we have been looking at it verse by verse. So we are at Galatians chapter two verse nineteen and twenty. It says, For through the law I died to the law so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ and it's no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me.
Speaker 1:And the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself up for me. I remember when I read these verses for the first time and I used to get really confused about it because it talks about being dead, it talks about we were crucified with Christ. Hello? I am still here. I am not crucified.
Speaker 1:So these were the certain things which were a little bit confusing for me. But I want to break it down so that it will be understandable for everyone. First of all it says here, For through the law I died to the law. So it has two parts here. So it says that, Through the law I died and its second part here is, I die to the law.
Speaker 1:So let's look at the first part, For through the law I died. We died through the law. How did that happen? So when Jesus came to earth, He came into the old covenant. Galatians chapter four talks about this, that He came into the old covenant.
Speaker 1:He showed exactly how to live the life of the old covenant and He was blessed as a result and through Him we are blessed as well. So that's the reason why He came into the old covenant. But there's another side of things here. So when Jesus came He lived life perfectly. No one could live that perfect following the law but Jesus did.
Speaker 1:He kept the law perfectly and when Jesus carried the sins of the world, what does the bible say? That the wages of sin is death and that is the law. So when he carried the law carried the sins of the world, in effect he had to be punished. He had to have the consequences or the wages of sin being death. He had to go through that.
Speaker 1:So that's why Jesus had to die. That's so that's why it says, for through the law, I died to the law. So through it was through the law that Jesus died. Now let's go to the second part. It says that I died to the law.
Speaker 1:When did I die? That's the question here, right? So one of the major things, of the central things when it comes to the Gospel is that the Bible talks about this, that we were baptized into Christ Jesus. I know baptism is a term that is commonly used when it comes to water baptism but baptism generally means just inversion. So when it says we were baptized into Christ Jesus it means that we were immersed in Him, we were in Him.
Speaker 1:Remember all the in Christ verses that we see throughout the scriptures that refers to this that we were in Christ, we are in Christ. The moment you believe in Christ, you have faith in the Lordship of Christ, you are placed timelessly into Christ. Ephesians chapter one says that He who chose you before the foundations of the earth and when you believe you are placed timelessly into Christ, inside Christ. Why is this significant? Why is it significant that we are in Christ?
Speaker 1:Here's the thing, when you are in Christ it means that you walked with Him, you participated in His death, in His burial, in His resurrection and you are seated with Him at the right hand of God. That's what Colossians says that, you are seated with Him at the right hand of God. So set your mind on the things above. That's what Colossians three talks about, right? So you were placed, you're seated with Him.
Speaker 1:This is significant. Let's go back to the verses: For through the law, because the law demanded death for sin, I died to the law not just Christ, I was in Christ and because I was in Christ I died to the law. What happened because of my death? What was achieved because of my death? You see we were married to the law according to Romans chapter seven.
Speaker 1:We were married to the law. So what happens is the law, Mr. Law, let's call it Mr. Law. Mr.
Speaker 1:Law is perfect and I'm the wife, Mr. Law is the husband. He's perfect but he makes huge demands right? He's absolutely perfect. He's righteous.
Speaker 1:There's no blemish. Nothing wrong with Mr. Law. But the thing is that when I do something right he showers me with gifts and everything but if I do something wrong what happens is that I have to go through a devastating time that I've been punished severely. That's the law, right?
Speaker 1:That if I do right, I'm blessed. If I do something wrong, if I break the law, I'm punished because of that. So that was Mr. Law. So I am married to Mr.
Speaker 1:Law. Mr. Law is making all these demands and I am not able to keep my side off the law. I am falling again and again and I'm not able to keep the law then I'm being punished severely over and over again. So this continues, so how do I get out of this?
Speaker 1:How do I get out of this misery even though Mr. Law is good? One of us has to die, right? That's when the marriage breaks. But the thing is that the Mr.
Speaker 1:Law cannot die because what did Jesus say? Jesus says that heaven and earth may pass away but the law will never. Whatever is written in the law will never pass away. So the law, Mr. Law will never pass away.
Speaker 1:So I had to die. Connected with the significance of our death with Christ because we died in Christ we are no longer under the law. We are under grace. We are under the freedom that is in Christ Jesus. That's why Galatians chapter five talks about living in the freedom and it says that live according to the spirit, a recreated spirit, and you shall not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Speaker 1:So let's read it again. For through the law, I died to the law. You and me, everyone died to the law so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me and the life which I now live, I live in the flesh by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself up for me. These flesh and bones contain the life of Jesus.
Speaker 1:We have been crucified with Christ. We are seated in the heavenlies. May God bless you all.
