The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we welcome Glasgow-based indie artist Community Swimming Pool to the show to share some of his most inspirational tunes and artists along with a smattering of personal favorites.

Show Notes

As broadcast March 4, 2022 with plenty of brogue of your Scotscast experience.  Tonight we welcomed the Glasgow-based DIY artist Community Swimming Pool to the show to talk about some of his favorite tunes and inspirational artists while he rocked an hour two playlist of his own concoction.  We riffed on disappointing our fathers with our musical tastes, how inspiring Prince is to the artist since he's also a "wee man," and why he chose the tunes he did.  Great cuts for the full two hours from Talking Heads, Hovvdy, Turnover, and Her's amongst other notable entries in the playlist.  Do check Community Swimming Pool's debut album from last year "Gloom/Bloom" if you'd like to hear more.

_________
It is 20 hours past midnight after a sunny Friday that just begs one to go out and enjoy the weather, but alas the sun has set and we are ready to begin the weekend proper on The Drop. And this Friday’s programming is Glasgow kissed as March 4, 2022. This is Danno coming at you but not necessarily for you from the mid in studio 2 GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do?
To start our greenest month on the calendar, tonight we welcome Community Swimming Pool to the show to rock a playlist with us of his favorite inspirations and jams during parts 3 & 4 tonight, and we’ll talk with him about the playlist and discover some of his own sounds this Friday night as he joins us on the phone from Glasgow, Scotland. The playlist tonight is a lot of mids, indie, and synthed out tunes from long ago and more recent so as we do for any of our guest artist selectors, we’ll roll out the red carpet here in the first hour for the guy everyone calls bmac, and we’re gonna get that started right now and talk talk about it after. THIS is The Drop.
________
Talk Talk – It’s My Life
The Drop has tipped off and we are full speed ahead on our guests & requests Friday night. Thrilled to have the guy everyone calls bmac back in Glasgow as our guest artist selector in hour 2 this evening. Known as Community Swimming Pool on stage, he’s sharing a selection of inspirations to his own sound along with general favorites after we hit the top of the clock again, and of course we’ll get a taste of his sound along the way to 10pm. His debut album dropped last year called Gloom/Bloom if you wanna go give that a whirl, as well.
For right now though, we just started the process of warming up for our guest artist selector’s appearance on the show and 2nd hour playlist, that was Talk Talk with It’s My Life. This of course was the title track and lead single to their 1984 album, their sophomore LP.
It appears that the recording sessions for the album were a bit of a legendary and exhausting marathon. Substitute bass player Phil Spalding admits to having played the whole session for one track on the album while disastrously hung-over, and that – foreshadowing the approach Talk Talk would take on subsequent recordings - Tim Friese-Greene and Mark Hollis insisted that he record a whole afternoon and evening of multiple takes, despite the simplicity of the part. Ian Curnow adds "we always had to go all around the houses to get next door, just in case there was anything that turned up on the other side."
Nothing explicitly historical on this track for today, mind you. Just a tune we thought would begin the process of warming up the Community Swimming Pool for tonight’s show.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast…
Now let’s continue the process of getting to 9pm in our warmup for bmac and the Community Swimming Pool jams list for tonight. We got Methyl Ethel up next to be followed by Beach Fossils and The Cars, the latter of whom we’ll hear more from after 9. We’ll continue with the yaddas after these three holler but for now THIS is The Drop on your Friday night at the Community Swimming Pool.
________________
The Drop is back and we are into the final verbal joust of the first stanza this evening as our radiological orchestra rolls on. What’s going on tonight, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? This is Danno, hoping you got outside a bit today as it was fantastic, and we thank you for tuning in. Tonight in hour 2 we are proud to welcome Glaswegian artist Community Swimming Pool to the show as our guest artist selector. For right now, let’s get to the damage…
Methyl Ethel – Trip The Mains (…a favorite from 2019’s Triage, the Aussie ambiguity synthpop band signed with Future Classic last year after time with 4AD. With such a mids and synth playlist coming up in hour 2, we had to go back down under for this favorite from three years ago.)
Beach Fossils – Adversity (…a band that gets big props during our hour 2 playlist with bmac, for those unfamiliar they hail from Brooklyn and this tune appeared on their 2011 album What A Pleasure, which was their debut EP.)
The Cars – Moving In Stereo (…Rick Ocasek and company during their own self-titled debut. Funny story with this and some of the other songs on this record, as when radio stations gave this a spin in the late 1970’s, a lot of people in their cars thought their speakers were malfunctioning due to the pan effect going on.)
Now let’s get to our final two joints for the intial quarter of the game this evening and the first of our cut for time refugees from Community Swimming Pool’s playlist. We’ll go with the latter first and DIIV (sp) with a cut called Bent (Roi’s Song), and we’ll finish with Helena Deland’s Truth Nugget to wrap it up for tonight’s first fourth of programmatics. THIS is The Drop on your Community Swimming Pool Friday night.
DIIV – Bent (Roi’s Song)
Helena Deland – Truth Nugget

II
The Drop is back for tonight as we have cold opened the 2nd quarter of our Glasgow Derby for tonight, but thankfully not football-wise, as that doesn’t seem manageable on any level, but for now we just heard from our Glasgow-based guest artist selector, so let’s get to the liner notes...
Community Swimming Pool – Be Your Man ( …)
Community Swimming Pool – I Don’t Wanna Lose You ( …these were the first two cuts on the man the locals call bmac’s debut album from last year called Gloom/Bloom. He has definitely kept busy since, releasing a few standalones in the mean time that have definitely caught our attention on Tuesday nights, and bmac will be on the phone with us later on in parts 3 & 4.)
Now before we continue just a quick reminder to follow us on social media, we are @gfnthedrop on most major social media platforms. If you’re local aka here in Korea, send us a message #9870 (50/100). What doesn’t cost you anything is catching us after the show, The Drop with Danno or The Drop on GFN (or) is available on most major podcast platforms, and you can find us with a simple google search & stream, download, and/or subscribe free & easy.
Moving ahead, we’ve got a few more tunes to let into space before we start the end of part 2 tonight, and up next we’ll get a little more electronica with Toro y Moi followed by Little Dragon, wrapping things up with Night Moves as well. We’ll tell you what’s up on the other side of the show & prove but for now THIS is The Drop on your Friday night with Community Swimming Pool.
____________
Back on The Drop as we continue with part 2, and this is the final blah blah blahs from yours truly. Danno here, doing my nightly thing on GFN, and our guest artist Community Swimming Pool representing Glasgow will be on the phone with us from Scotland to take over the hour 2 playlist tonight, which all starts shortly. As to those three balloons we just floated and let return to Terra, that was...
Toro y Moi – Blessa (…quite an early/old school joint from the now famed producer and singer-songwriter out of SC originally. This one dropped in 2010 on Causers of This, which was young Chaz Bear’s debut album, and I know…did he really need a moniker with that amazing name? Apparently so.)
Little Dragon – Another Lover (…the latest LP from the famed Swedish outfit from Gothenburg lead by the inimitable and fierce Little Dragon herself Yukimi Nogano. The album dropped in 2020 and is called New Me, Same Us by the way, if you are not so initiated.)
Night Moves – Colored Emotions (…back to the early 2010’s and over to Minneapolis in the States with this band. This cut was the title track to the album that dropped courtesy of Domino later, but was initially released for free via their website the year prior to proper release in 2012. Love the country psyche thing this album has, really unique.)
So, we’re about to jump to part 3 and our interview exclusive with Community Swimming Pool, but we still got some remainder on the clock to take care of. On deck is our final cut for time refugee from bmac’s playlist called Midnight Song by Wild Nothing. After that, we’ll finish the half circle with Seapony and a joint called Late Summer and yeah, we’re already in the mood for that kinda vibe. THIS is The Drop and that’s a wrap on the first half.
Wild Nothing – Midnight Song
Seapony – Late Summer
