The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

We start with Krush Groove, which opened tonight in 1985, then we went into a surprising amount of 80's-inspired cuts for our Triggered Tuesday indie show, unfortunately without Kat Bass in studio due to COVID.

Show Notes

As broadcast October 25, 2022 with plenty of extra 80's feels whether now or then.  Tonight we open noting the hip-hop classic Krush Groove opening in theaters on this date in 1985.  Based on the life of Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons, the film not only gave street culture and hip-hop mainstream appeal, but became a cultural phenomenon just like the music itself later on.  Turning to the new stuff tonight, it must be noted our usual partner in crime Kat Bass is not in studio to enjoy the music with us as she's out with COVID (but nothing to really worry about, she's totally fine symptoms-wise), but we had a lot of new tunes to get through, especially from Korean indie artists.  Great tunes from Anna of the North, Hotel Decor, Black Hibiscus, Furrows, and Phantom Handshakes were highlights in a very quality couple of hours.

Facts
Kurtis Blow – If I Ruled The World
- One of the first rap movies, Krush Groove, is released in American theaters on this date in 1985, putting hip-hop into mainstream consciousness to a great degree.
- Featuring Run-DMC, New Edition and Sheila E., the film is based on the life story of Russell Simmons, co-founder of the hip-hop label Def Jam.
- Of course, that joint from the soundtrack by Kurtis Blow was famously covered by Nas & Lauryn Hill later on, also becoming a massive hit for later generations, appearing on It Was Written, possibly the greatest hip-hop album of all time.
NEIL FRANCES & dreamcastmoe – She’s Just The Type of Girl
- Interesting collab here, very VERY 80’s in its execution.
- Los Angeles duo Neil Frances’ (Jordan Feller and Marc Gilfry) return with their funky new earworm, “She’s Just The Type Of Girl,” featuring dreamcastmoe. It is their first new track since their debut album, There Is No Neil Frances, came out earlier this year.
- Also interesting is that this was initially recorded at a way slower bpm, but Frances wanted to turn it up and make it a dance tune again, so there you have it.
Black Hibiscus – Basquiat
- For those unfamiliar, this is an artist out of Nigeria who has been making an amazing meld of alt indie, rnb, punk, and other influences, chief amongst them contemporarily being Nick Hakim, Blood Orange, and Bakar.
- Really good on-the-rise artist, do add to your playlists.
Yaris Paris – Replay
- This is the latest from the solo project of Vancouver’s Corbin Pawer, who’s been working in music for quite a while.
- Per the bio, the songs are inspired by beaches, rain, and a 1996 Toyota Camry so there you go.
VOICE ACTOR – Battling Dust
- This is a tune from an album called Sent from my telephone, released on Oct 5.
- Incredibly, this album is 109 tracks in depth, and man is it a crazy listen. Veering stylistically from spoken word to woozy dream pop, lo-fi elements both rock and beats inspired, folk, and more than that.
- (repeat)
River Westin – Cinema
- This is a new single from the self-described vintage boy making vintage music, just released over the weekend.
- It’s also part of the upcoming debut album from River Westin called The Honeymoon Suite, which will drop in full November 18.

Part 2
Anna of the North - I Do You
qman (9.10000) - Impulse
Peach Tree Rascals - C'est la Vie

Hotel Decor - Red Car Syndrome
FIG - Cooking For One

Facts
Anna of the North - I Do You 3.44
- Before she releases her new album next month, November 4th, Anna of the North shared another preview in the form of her song "I Do You." It's the latest single from her upcoming album Crazy Life.
- The new song finds the singer taking her power back from past experiences and past relationships, turning it into a delightfully reassuring new tune.
- Anna says, "Too many times have I been in the situation where I put other people before myself, I imagine everyone around me being so happy and successful…. It’s like I give other people superpowers. We say that we’re our own worst enemy. And I’m definitely mine…. I wish that I could look at myself, like I look at others...If I did me, like I do you."

qman (9.10000) - Impulse 4.23
- Today we have a lot of Korean indie artists to introduce, and our first runner up is q.man! Active since 2019, qman is back with their newest EP Analo9e.
- The artist describes the 5 track collective as a way to survive the digital world through analoge. A word with such nostalgia, it's a time for people to relax and find themselves in the moment as they listen to music and enjoy their time.

Peach Tree Rascals - C'est la Vie 3.0
- Since we last introduced them back in July, we are back with Peach Tree Rascals and their newest Single, C'est La Vie.
- This is their first single since their release of their latest album, Does A Fish Know It's Wet? With a question unanswered, today's single share freedom against all questions and problems, because it's oh so better to just be with you and say c'est la vie.

Lee ChanHyuk - PANORAMA 3.19
- We have a new artist on the rise with new debut album, ERROR. South Korean artist 이찬혁 is actually a solo project from sibling duo band 악동뮤지션 also known Akmu.
- A man with brains and talent, he definitely showed a different side than from his originally Happy go Lucky Busker style.
- Wanting to show all his extent within creativity, he portrays his emotions and experience of past regret, current conflict, and his hope for the future.

Hotel Decor - Red Car Syndrome 3.55
- Debuting back in 2021 with hit single All The Rage, the Canada based artist has since released two more singles, an EP, and today's pick from their double single, Grand Theft Auto/ Red Car Syndrome.
- Out of all the chillwave tunes I have listened to lately, Hotel Decor definitely took a different twist from today's typical lo-fi and spiced it with defined beats and a neat bass line.
- With somewhat spooky vibes, it perfect of October.

FIG - Cooking For One 2.41
- FIG is back today with their latest four track EP, Cooking For One! The EP consists of this year's past three releases including an addition, the title track Cooking For One.
- Being a new artist on the scene, having four songs in total, FIG really shows their talent and professionalism with the quality of their music. I'm all in for FIG and you should be too!

Part 3
Damon's Year - Gestalt (Mondegreen ver.)
Lee go do – mole (my room)
Holly Blair - See This Through
Phantom Handshakes - Passport (How Far I Will Be)
Andrew Goldring – Tell Me It’s Easy
Furrows – Never Here

Facts
Damon's year - Gestalt (Mondegreen ver.) 3.50
- Initially debuting as a ballad singer back in 2017, south Korean Damon's Year has come to the dark side, also known as, indie and has blessed us with their newest album, Mondegreen.
- This album is an expression of how they felt and thought for their past loved one. How they never were able to show it properly and questioned their entire existence. This album is a devotion of their love and music to Lady Mondegreen.

Lee go do - mole(my room) 3.56
- Active since 2020, 이고도 is an independent rock artist in South Korea. Currently with no full length albums, our artist works with single and double sided singles, but nonetheless creating her own chill vibes.
- With a sweet soft tone, 이고도 has given us her latest double single, knife. Our pick is their second, mole.
- Apparently these two singles were inspired by dreams she had in the past. Mole also has a separate meaning of emptiness we all feel inside.

Holly Blair - See This Through 3. 28
- L.A. based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and filmmaker Holly Blair has debuted with their melancholy single “See This Through”. With hints of Death Cab for Cutie and The Shins, Blair’s knack for capturing mystical melodies partners well with a downtempo groove; parading a quiet yet uplifting single full of spirit.
- As a queer, gender-fluid artist Blair was keen for “See This Through” to sonically, emotionally, and lyrically adhere to every manner and manifestation of love.

Phantom Handshakes - Passport (How Far I Will Be) 3.14
- NYC duo Phantom Handshakes reveal another track, Passport (How Far I Will Be). The single is pleasant and a storytelling song that definitely defies dreampop to its core.
- On the new track, Phantom Handshakes comment: "Passport is the second single and the (almost) title track from our upcoming self-produced LP, A Passport to Remain. The title is a reference taken from Ocean Vuong's book 'On earth we're briefly gorgeous'. In the book it refers to something else, but for us it's a metaphor for being here and now, being in the present moment, regardless of what is going on around us."

Andrew Goldring – Tell Me It’s Easy
- This is a singer-songwriter and producer based in the music city of Nashville, and this tune came out on a little 3 track EP that dropped on October 5 of which this is the title track.
- Goldring seems to be mainly a producer working on other people’s songs to butter his bread, and gets busy with the solo career on the side, which is steadily building a decent discography as the years progress.

Furrows – Never Here
- Once again the solo project of Peter Wagner is back with a new joint. We’ve been covering this artist a good bit on our Tuesday shows, and if you like what’s coming up be sure to check out the debut album from last year called Fisher King as it is some pretty choice dreams to have.

Scotch Mist - Breathe Underwater 2.53
- Scotch Mist is the indie psych-rock baby of Ed Zighelboim. Independent, self-produced and based in New York City, Scotch has been under the rader since 2017. A man with many talents and much love for his recently passed loved one, this artist can definitely make a tune.
