What is Progress and Perfection?

Recovery themed, Christian flavored daily reflections for those struggling, recovering, or seeking understanding.

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Psalm‬ ‭121‬:‭1‬-‭2

Posture saves lives.

When we arrive in recovery we are often downtrodden, depressed and down right droopy.

Yes, it’s the end of the line (actually we could be dead).

Yes, it’s painful (but it isn’t permanent).

Yes, it’s overwhelming (imagine what those close to us have been feeling for a long time).

We often come with beliefs we have become uncertain of or completely tossed aside. We usually come with conceit hidden just behind the resignation of quitting.

And what we are quitting is the very thing that at one point filled us with vitality. Or so we thought.

We are a mixed bag. We suffer and then repent. But then we repeat the whole cycle like we are looking for a secret level in a video game that we can’t seem to clear though we have long moved past it.

And we can’t look up.

We are engrossed in ourselves. In our plight.

If we aren’t careful, our newfound sobriety can become inverted too. If we look inward too much for too long, we are going to tire of what we find and need release, relief and refueling.

Look up.

It’s a posture we aren’t familiar with.

We are used to bowing our heads to pray, but it can be helpful to look up rather than down from time to time.

Remember that our help comes from above. That the expanse of the skies and the creeping, ever expanding universe has a Father that concerns himself with a mote like you and me.

God, thank you for help, for grace and for another chance.
