Hope: Today, we’re joined by Podcast Editor Emerita Isabel Rodrigues.

Isabel: This weekend, I traveled to Bloomington, Indiana, to watch the Princeton Women's Basketball team play the Kentucky Wildcats in the first round of NCAA March Madness.

Isabel: It's Sunday, March 20th.

Hope: First, we’ll walk you through an overview of the game. But we also want you to feel like you were in Assembly Hall where it all took place — more on that later.

Hope: The first quarter of the game saw a flurry of turnovers as Kentucky and Princeton turned over the ball 12 times in the first 10 minutes. Princeton looked disorganized early, but finished the quarter up 12-11 with Kaitlyn Chen scoring a buzzer beater to close out quarter 1. With a little less than half of the 2nd quarter to go, Abby Meyers, Ivy League Player of the Year hit a big 3 pointer. But a foul on Meyers and Jada Walker’s resulting free throws just a minute later brought Kentucky back within 5 points of the Tigers. Kaitlyn Chen assisted Julia Cunningham on a layup, and two minutes later made one of her own assisted by Abby Meyers to bring the lead up to nine points — 32-23. Kentucky’s Rhyne Howard came right back to make a 3 point buzzer beater that closed out the half with Tigers leading 32-26.

Hope: The Wildcats came back to start the second half with energy. The Tigers’ Grace Stone turned over the ball with 6:36 to play in the third quarter, and though Kentucky’s Treasure Hunt missed a three on Kentucky’s next possession, Dre’una Edwards made a layup shortly after, tightening Princeton’s lead to just 36-34 with more than half of the 3rd quarter to play. Abby Meyers then made another shot, but picked up another foul shortly after. The Wildcats and Tigers traded turnovers, and with another foul on the Tigers, Kentucky’s Rhyne Howard went to the line for her free throws, sinking 2 in a row and bringing the score to 38-36 Princeton. Even though there was a full quarter left to play, Princeton stayed dominant. The teams traded fouls and free throws through the end of the 4th, and the Tigers officially sealed a 69-62 victory over the Wildcats.

Hope: What was it like after the win?

[Quote]

Hope: Abby Meyers dropped 29 points during the historic victory, which was Princeton Women’s Basketball’s 2nd-ever win in the NCAA tournament. Princeton led for all but 2.5 minutes of the game.

Hope: The Kentucky Wildcats had a rough week against New Jersey teams, as the Men’s Basketball team fell to the St. Peter’s Peacocks a few days before the Tigers toppled the Women’s squad. The Tigers will face off against the 3-seeded Indiana University Hoosiers on Monday at 8pm.

Isabel: That’s all for Daybreak today.
