Welcome and greetings! Today we're diving into the wisdom of the Rambam, specifically focusing on his teachings on charity.
The Rambam, also known as Maimonides, provides us with eight degrees of charity, each one higher than the next. The highest level, he teaches, is not merely to give to the poor but to assist them in becoming self-sufficient. Here, the Rambam is calling on us not only to be reactive in our charity, but also proactive. As we go about our daily lives, engage with others, and participate in our communities, we should always be looking for opportunities to uplift others, to help them stand on their own.
Remember, the goal is not just to alleviate immediate suffering, but to create a system that promotes long-term stability and self-sufficiency. By doing so, we are not just giving to the poor; we are giving them the ability to no longer be poor.
Let us all strive to reach this highest level of charity in our everyday actions. And in doing so, may we contribute to making our communities, and indeed the world, a better place.
