100xLife Podcast

In this episode, Rob Dayton breaks down one of the most practical and immediately transformative mindsets of Jesus that most people overlook. You are not surrounded by random, annoying, difficult people. You are surrounded by image bearers of God.

Rob walks through what it means to actually see others the way God sees them. Not as obstacles, not as interruptions, not as competition, but as deeply loved sons and daughters made in His image. He exposes the inward mindsets that quietly shape how we judge others and ourselves, and shows how those patterns keep us stuck.

This is not just a perspective shift. This is a daily practice that will completely change how you interact with people, how you see yourself, and how you move through the world.

If you’ve been frustrated with people, easily irritated, or stuck in comparison, this one is going to confront you in the best way.

Rob Dayton (00:36)
Hey, 100xlifers, welcome back to the podcast. Today, Nancy and I are down in Santa Barbara for our two weeks per quarter stint. the room's a little bit different. This is my old office. I still cannot believe that, God bless us with being able to spend time in the house we built for 17 years.

It's pretty crazy that we don't own this house, but we get to live in it and experience Santa Barbara. So we're down here. It's kind of interesting. Just some personal reflections is that we are completely free. Our hearts are completely free from the fact of Santa Barbara. The thing when we were obedient to God, when he he prompted us to do something different.

I think the thought was, wow, this is going to be really hard. This is a big sacrifice. And the predominant feeling we're having as we came back yesterday and walked into the place and started having conversations about how we feel about being here is that we love our decision, that our decision was so good for us. Isn't that interesting how we see the things that God asks us to do as sacrifices when in fact, he's just trying to

bless us. He's just trying to get us to a better place. It's pretty amazing. So we're very, very thankful to be here. And we're very, thankful for the freedom that God has provided for us to not be attached or, you know, where your heart is there also is your treasure. And if I'm Frank, this house was a big treasure for me and it wasn't in eternity.

And now I'm free of that. I don't have that feeling even emotionally, which is just profound to me. Well, guys, we are working on the 10 mindsets of Jesus, and I gotta tell you, I get more and more excited about these.

These are so good. How are you doing on practicing these? How are you doing? Are you on the process of actually thinking, OK, this is the Tuesday drop. This is the mindset. I'm going to take some notes. I'm going to work on this. I'm going to journal throughout the week. Are you improving in your mindset, your ability to shift the way you think? Remember, Jesus is the mindset God. He's the one member of the Trinity who's concerned mostly about how you think.

reason that's so important is because how you think produces all your actions. when we were talking in week one, we focused on the mindset of believing in the one God sent, that is Jesus.

So being fully comprehensively convinced that Jesus is the Messiah, that Jesus is God's son, that Jesus is our focus, that Jesus is everything to us. He is the way to the Father's house. He is everything to us. So that predominant mindset, the work of God, as Jesus said, is to believe in the one he sent. And then week two, we talked about the mindset of living as one led by

Jesus, actually getting the feeling as we walk through life, as you go through this day, that we're following Jesus, we are followers of Jesus because he's going somewhere, getting that in our heads. So that when we're going through our day, where are you going, Jesus is a natural question of that mindset. And then week three, we talked about seeing the words of Jesus as our freedom. In other words, they're not kind of what I just said in the opening.

They're not there to burden us. He's not asking us to do things to actually create sacrifice for us, even though it feels like it at the time. No, he's actually telling us to do things for our freedom.

It's so crazy, whole process with this house created so much freedom and we had so much resistance going in it. So shifting our mindset so we get rid of that resistance and we actually run towards what he's asking us to do.

And then last week we were focused on the reality that you are the dwelling place of God and that he dwells in you. You dwell in him, he dwells in you. I hope that that was powerful for you, that you have the Trinity on board right now and dwelling in you. Peace is dwelling in you. Joy is dwelling in you.

contentment, all these beautiful things, the fruits of the Spirit, they dwell inside you now. And how do we believe that? How do we transform the way we think so that we can look in the mirror and be distracted by the housing of God and really appreciate who we are? Such a powerful mindset. And today,

We're going to switch to outward. What is our outward mindset towards others? And today we're focused on the reality that all people bear the image of God. Everybody is bearing the image of God. We are all his kids and we look at Genesis 1:27 for this verse and it's loaded in the first chapter of Genesis.

God created man in his own image. In the image of God, created him. Male and female, he created them.

So we are the image. He says, let us make men in our image. And so men and women are the image bearers of God. We somehow look just like him. I know it's kind of hard to think about when you think about God as this omniscient being, hard to think of him as being human. And we are flesh. But somehow we are reflection of who he is. Just like, much like you might think of your offspring,

our reflection of you. He procreated us and created us according to his image and that mindset. If we can get that mindset for other people, we will transform the way we treat other people and the way we grow. It's going to be so powerful. so.

Let's talk about how this works because I want to give you some other mindset Intel is to show you how seeing others as image bearers is really going to flip the switch from what's going on right now internally to get you focused on other people and really concerned about them. That's really what's happening. But there's things that are driving us down.

And let me tell you, the core thing that's dragging us down are judgments about when we think of ourselves and we focus on our mindset is about self and judgment, we get in this thing called the inward mindset. These are not related to the mindsets we've been talking about. An inward mindset is just self-focused. An outward mindset is other people focused. So we want to get really good.

and identifying if we're gonna if we're gonna see other people as image bearers, we got to get really good at identifying the two mindsets. So the general term to the way to look at this is that when you're when you're in in the outward mindset, you see people as people that all have the same realities as us. But when you have an inward mindset, you see people you tend to see them as objects or

things that are in the way. And that's when the judgment comes. Now there's four types of inward mindsets. And by the way, this comes from an incredible book, an allegory from the Arbinger Group.

And I really encourage you to get this book. It's called The Autonomy of Peace by the Harbinger Group, Autonomy of Peace, which identifies these four focuses of inward mindset. And you're going to recognize them because they're going off. And you're going to have one that's predominant in you. Here's the first one.

need to be seen as this is the need I need to be seen as mindset and the self view is that I need to be well thought of and this can that I'm fake and I need to do an action that will increase what people think of me my view of others is judgmental threatening they're my audience and then the feelings these are crazy all these these bad feelings we get from these mindsets are

anxiety, we're afraid, we're needy, we're stressed, we're overwhelmed. And our worldview is that the world is dangerous. It's watching us. It's judging me. that is the need to be seen as inward mindset. So think about that for you. Do you have this need to be seen as? Are you constantly trying to act out something to make sure that people see you a certain way? That is a great indication that you're in

in

this inward mindset. Here's the next one. I deserve. The view of yourself is that you're mistreated. You're a victim. You're unappreciated and you're you've got this. I deserve more feeling your view of others is that they're mistaken. They're mistreating you. ungrateful towards them. And the feelings are entitled.

deprived, resentful, and your worldview is that the world is unfair. It's unjust and it owes me. in America, we talk to call this the victim mindset, the I deserve mindset, very focused on our own needs and how we've been ripped off. Okay. So first one was I need to be seen as second one is that I deserve. Here's the third one is I'm better than others.

And my self view is that I'm superior, I'm important, I'm virtuous, and I'm right. This is the one I struggle with the most. You're going to see that you struggle with one of these the most. And the view of others is that they're inferior, they're incapable, they're irrelevant, they're false. They're definitely wrong. And then the feelings are that you get impatient or you're disdainful towards others or you're indifferent towards others.

And then the worldview is that this is a competition that you know and I can be troubled and everyone needs me. Stop laughing because these these definitely are echoing in me and I do. I'm working to get out of these and grow out of these. So first one let me review again. First one is a need to be seen as second one is I deserve and then the next one is better than others and then the fourth one is the opposite of better than others that I'm not as good.

as others, yeah, is this you? The self you is I'm less than others or I'm deficient and the view of others is that they're advantage and they're privileged and they're blessed and I don't have any of that. And then the feelings is helpless and jealous and bitter and depressed. The worldview is that the world is hard. It's difficult. Everything's against me. People are ignoring me.

These are the inward mindsets. So need to be seen as I'm constantly trying to be seen as something I deserve. I'm not getting exactly what I deserve. I'm a victim. I'm better than others. So I'm just superior than others or I'm not as good as others. I'm actually less than deficient and I just didn't get what it takes and I just didn't get the goods. These are the inward mindsets and they all start with judgments towards others.

In other words, we're going through life and we have judgments against ourselves that are related to these four areas, need to be seen as I deserve, better than others, not as good as others.

And we have judgments, but instead of judging ourselves, we judge other people. We actually take the judgments that we have and we judge other people. Remember what the words of Jesus is. Do not judge lest you be judged. So when you're judging other people, you're reinforcing the judgment that you have on yourself.

That's why this one is so crazy and unhealthy.

The outward mindset is completely different. It doesn't even judge anymore. It's a different approach. It's a whole other perspective on life. It does not look inward.

and judge the self, which leads to judgmenting of other people. It actually looks outwardly and starts to see people, not as objects, the inward, the inward mindset is all about seeing people as objects, obstacles, things that are in your way. There are new people are on nuisance and switch that to people are amazing and people are wonderful. And and what I'm going to really talk to you about is how do we get in awe?

about other people and the pathway to leading us to that hope and understanding of others. The pathway is that we need to see each other as image bearers of God. Yeah, we are His kids, we're His children. We need to position our thinking that we cherish others and we see them as adored by God.

that he loves them radically. I remember one time I asked God for a miracle. was just kind of a superficial thing. was when my daughter was very young. I think she was like in sixth grade and we visited Disneyland and I had lost my Disneyland ticket. And I told Kendra, we want our Disneyland ticket back. And so we were in line and we were about to actually purchase more tickets as we were going in.

And I said, Kendra, this is the last chance for God to give us our ticket back. I said, we want our ticket back. And so I looked in my wallet and I had looked in my wallet. I turned it upside down again and again. The tickets were gone and I looked in my wallet and they were there.

And I remember having this experience of a flood. Whenever God does a miracle, there's this flood of emotions that happens that, wow, God is so powerful. And here was my predominant thought as I walked into Disneyland. I don't know if you've been there, but Disneyland has got lots of people. It's just wall-to-wall people. And here was my predominant thought. Look at all these people.

and look at how much God loves them. I'm just looking at every face, I'm like, God loves you. He's so crazy about you. he loves you. He cherishes you. And my heart just sang the whole day looking at people. I got a taste of the image bearer mindset in spades. it was tracking emotionally just perfectly. And it was pure. And I gotta tell you, it was bliss. It was wonderful. Was I annoyed by anybody that day?

at Disneyland. How easy is it to get annoyed with people at Disneyland? You know, people are just being people and they're quirky and they've got all these idiosyncrasies that we don't have and the judgments flow in a group of people and I had none of that. I just looked at them as perfect image bearers of God. Isn't that the way we want to live? Don't you want that mindset of seeing other people as God's

God's kids, it's gonna shift everything for you. So how do we practice this mindset? How do we do that? You know, it's one thing to talk about it, but how do we actually put this mindset into practice? Okay, step one, we gotta ask Papa God to show you the beauty of his children. Ask him to show you the beauty.

be looking for the beauty. how we do this is, I think the grocery store and the coffee shop are two wonderful places. You could do this in church too. It's a little easier in church, but I don't know, maybe it'll be hard for you in church. But in the grocery store, here you just spend time exercising this mindset, actually doing the conscientious thinking. Because remember, we're trying to reprogram our brains to automatically have this mindset.

Conscientiously, we can do it, as we practice conscientiously, our neural passages within our brain are actually gonna start rewiring to see as image bearers of God. So we want to practice awe. Here's that word again. Be in awe. As you're going down the grocery aisles, looking for your items, notice the faces of people.

Notice how much God loves them. Notice how uniquely he created them. Notice how special they are and how he died for them and he is joy. For the joy set before him, he gladly endured a torture chamber for them. And he's crazy about them. Can you muster that? We're mustering that craziness about others and just be in awe towards others.

And then thirdly, we're going to spend time in our journal or we're going to meditate either one. So you're writing or you're actually meditating and rehearsing in your mind, focused review in your mind, the people you encountered that day and thanking God for them. So you're just going back in your day and you're writing about how special it was to see this guy who had this smile or this this child who was crying. Anyone you can think of focus review your day. I love reviewing my day because I

actually catch things that I completely forgot about that were magical and wonderful. Review your day and be thankful for these people that God placed in your life. the other thing you can do.

is you can identify your most likely inward mindset, which of the mindset, the need to be seen as mindset, the I deserve mindset, the better than mindset or not as good mindset, which one is predominantly.

my go-to, which one do I do? And then then ask Holy Spirit to take that away. To highlight, highlight it when you're doing it, highlight when these are in play. And then when he does, okay, so when he highlights that you're actually operating in that mindset.

Here's the key. You don't beat yourself up. You don't join the enemy and then experience shame. You lovingly shift your focus to seeing the other person as an image bearer.

That's it. So the reason it's key to see which one of these, the four inward mindsets that you possess is simply to notice them and then shift in that moment to the image bearer mindset, seeing other people as image bearers of God. So you're working to shift your negative judgments, which will be completely engulfed in when the inward mindset, you're going to shift them to hope and understanding that God loves and cherishes all these people in front of you.

and sees them as his kids. Okay, I hope this has been helpful. This is one of my favorite, most powerful mindsets. I would say the image bearer mindset is one that in a 100xLife that people will say it's the easiest. It has the greatest impact immediately. So surface one, get good at this. Get good at this. Spend an entire week focused on this mindset every single day.

you wake up, remind yourself, set an alarm. I'm going to have the image bearer mindset today. I'm going to practice. Remember, all these mindsets are We're practicing You're not going to be perfect out of the gate. It's a practice. And then here's your journal prompt to start off with, Papa God, why do you love people so much?

Why do you love people so much, Papa Guy? I think that that's a great question to ask him. And then, how have you designed me to specifically love people the way you do? This question is so powerful. So first, you're asking, why do you love people so much? And then, Papa God how did you uniquely design me to join you in loving others?

You know, for me, that's the answer. That is encouragement. He's got his loaded me with abilities to to encourage others. I'm so capable of it. I just need to aim it. I just need to join him when I see other people as image bearers to join them and say, OK, well, of course I want to encourage God's kids. That's how it's going to just be amazing for me, amazing for them, and I'll be living in the kingdom.

I hope you've enjoyed these mindsets. I'm so excited about them. If you have any feedback or you're getting any breakthrough, you can respond on any of the channels that you are on for 100X Life.
