What is Astro Minute?

Welcome to the Astro Minute! I'm Lauren Smyth, and with the help of astronomer and teacher Kelli Smyth, I'll be your tour guide as we explore the secrets of the night sky sixty seconds at a time.

Welcome to the Astro Minute, where we’re exploring the universe sixty seconds at a time. I’m Lauren Smyth, and today we’re exploring the story in the night sky.

Go outside and look up at night, and even without any optical aid you will be dazzled by meteors, aurora, the Moon, neighboring planets, comets, stars and star clusters, nebulae, novae and supernovae, even galaxies beyond our own. But the Psalmist tells us there’s more. That the heavens are continuously speaking about the glory of their Creator.

Thousands of years ago, God told a discouraged Abram to go outside and look up at the stars to see the magnitude of His promises and His power to fulfill them. Centuries later Isaiah told disheartened people to look up at the stars that God knows by name, to remember that He knows them as well. And centuries after that, men seeking God looked up and followed a star into His very presence.

Our Creator doesn’t change, and our invitation today is the same: go outside and look up. Soak in the magnificent vastness of the heavens. Listen to the declarations about the Creator who knows every star by name. And seek the One who prepared this glorious universe for the culmination of His creation: You.

I’m Lauren Smyth, and that’s your AstroMinute.
