What is The Luke Beegle Podcast?

Great conversations with great people

Speaker 1:

How's it going? My name is Luke Beegle and I'm here talking to Charlie Steensma. Charlie, how are you doing today?

Speaker 2:

Doing great.

Speaker 1:

That is great to hear. So Charlie here, he is a student of West Virginia majoring in sports and adventure media. So tell me about that. What got you into first coming to West Virginia and choosing this as your major?

Speaker 2:

Yeah. I'm, I'm actually from Colorado originally, so I wanted to kind of leave the state come out this way. And pretty much all the options are very expensive out of state, so I didn't like that. And then I kind of stumbled upon West Virginia and got a good amount of money off just from grades and whatnot and decided to come here and I've loved it. I got into the sports and adventure media pretty much because I just I love sports.

Speaker 2:

I'm passionate about sports. I think I don't really want a job that doesn't have to do with something I'm very much into, so I think it's a good path and a good program to kinda get into the sports world whether that does end up being media or something else in the industry.

Speaker 1:

Interesting. Interesting. Because I used to I lived in Colorado for a little bit, and then that's what makes me more of an adventure side. So what makes you more of a sports guy coming from Colorado?

Speaker 2:

I definitely do have a lot of adventure side to me as well. I really like the idea of doing some adventure media too, but I think I kind of go more with the sports side because I just simply know more and have more experience watching sports than anything else really. I do love kind of hiking around the national parks in Colorado. There's just so much great wilderness there and I love hiking, love camping, love all that. I kind of consider adventure and stuff like that more as a hobby than a profession in a way, but I know there are definitely some some very good opportunities out there in adventure media.

Speaker 2:

So it's good to get that side of it as well.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. I mean, coming from Colorado to West Virginia, you still got the mountains and everything. So besides your major and everything, what are you involved in any other clubs around here?

Speaker 2:

I am involved in student media, u ninety two, the radio station. I talk sports on there, so it's it kinda does play into the major as well. But, yeah, I enjoy that. I've only done that for about a year and a half, but getting on as much as I can and just talk and shop with the other guys in there. It's been cool.

Speaker 1:

Great. So enough talking about school and stuff. What's what are some crazy stories that you've experienced here at West Virginia?

Speaker 2:

Mean, Blue Lot in itself is crazy enough. I'd say one of the things that sticks out is my sophomore year when Pitt was here. We were in Blue Lot, and there was, like, this big group kinda starting to do, like, Oklahoma drills, if you know what that is. Yep. Always Oklahoma drills.

Speaker 2:

Mean, just doing Oklahoma drills on a concrete parking lot. Parking lot. Is crazy. But then there's this pit guy in a West Virginia guy and they did it and like, the West Virginia guy picked him up and slammed him and you like, the dude landed on his arm and his whole like bone came out. It was terrible.

Speaker 2:

Oh my god. Could see it bad. Gross.

Speaker 1:

I guess you can see why the blue lies in front of the hospital.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. There. Would walk over.

Speaker 1:

I would have never thought somebody would be doing Oklahoma drills in the in the pavement.

Speaker 2:

Not the smartest decision.

Speaker 1:

So I guess what are your what are you what's your dream plan for once you graduate?

Speaker 2:

Oh, I mean, my dream job is no job, obviously. But I'd say if I was to get into something, I sports media wise, I'm very interested kind of in the talking aspect of it. So I think kind of like I do on the radio. Just talking with the guys about sports would be awesome. Calling games would be pretty cool.

Speaker 2:

I don't know. I'm a I'm a good talker and I know a lot about sports, so I think any of those roles would probably fit me pretty well.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. Well, like, what I always say is the best job is a job that feels like it's not a job. You're kinda just doing your thing and doesn't feel like work. But, Charlie, thank you so much. It was great talking to you, and I wish you the best.

Speaker 2:

You as well. Thank you.
