The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

We pay tribute to our dear Dunia with a throwback show as she has departed for Istanbul to pursue her studies, but we'll still be doing our thing remote on Round Trip Wednesdays together. This was a great show, and in the end an ironic one.

Show Notes

As broadcast September 28, 2022 with plenty of Turkish delight for your Wednesday night.  Last week saw our dear Dunia depart Gwangju to move to Istanbul, so what better time to rock one of our first shows together and feel the vibe of her current reality together?  This was a rawkus trip to Anatolya and a brilliant feature of why Turkey is so famous in music, with old and new, funk and funk, rock and pop from all over the country to showcase this week.  Not to worry though, Dunia will continue to do her thing on our show remote once she's set up in Istanbul properly.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight, flight TD 062 is just completing its final maintenance touchups, and we hope you are ready to take a trip this evening. Tonight we depart for what was once the Rome of the East, known as Byzantium at the time, later Constantinople, and now Istanbul, and this evening’s Turkish delight flight is entered on the great long itinerary as February 16, 2022. This is Danno feeling pretty psyched for this trip this evening, on the mic in studio 2, under the big tower at GFN HQ in Downtown Gwangju, how do you do? As noted, tonight we’ll be taking off for another lovely sojourn with Dunia Aljawad to The Jewel of the Bosporous and the crossroads of Asia & Europe in Turkey, and we’ll be exploring a lot of Turkish sounds old & new for this evening along with some Korean indie favorites to finish the gig after we return to ICN prior to the hour of 10. For right now though, we start by wishing The Weeknd a very happy birthday today, and we’ll talk about everything after the Starboy does his thing. This is The Drop.
The Weeknd feat Daft Punk – Starboy
The Drop has boarded the KTX train this evening, so we’re speeding along towards Incheon International Airport to catch flight TD062 bound for Turkey’s jewel on the Bosporous, Istanbul with the added bonus of hitting the skies with our contributor Dunia Aljawad who we’ll see then aboard the plane. What’s happening tonight, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno on the mic here in studio 2, GFN HQ, downtown Gwangju.
We just started everything tonight with our TIGHT (or) feature, as we do every night. Marking The Weeknd’s 32nd birthday on this date, born Abel Tisfaye on this date in 1990. That was Starboy featuring Daft Punk to kick off the show and wish the Canadian megastar our very best to open the gig this evening.
Also interesting as it was just about a year ago that the French duo Daft Punk formally called it quits as a group, so kind of a small world thing. Since their debut LP Homework came out in 1997, the French house duo just seemed to get bigger and bigger with each passing year, but it seems that time was up.
I’m sure both of them have a lot of work moving forward as soloists though, we’ll see what happens.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
Next block, we’ll start with our Turkish tour for tonight in the groove & psyche old school realms. Up next we got tunes from Elias Rahbani, Altin Gun, & Mazhar Ve Fuat, all of which we’ll discuss and probably mispronounce (no disrespect intended) side opposite the Turkish bath. This is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday night to ByzantiuConstantIstanbul.
_________

Back on The Drop, Danno here, on the train as the beginnings of the spring season flash by the window here on the Korean peninsula. Barbora joins us via phone moving forward until the new season as she has officially moved to Seoul. We travel to Turkey after 9pm tonight on flight TD015. Just rocked a trio of old school cuts but not necessarily all from the great country that straddles the edge of Europe & Asia, but all influenced heavily by the psyche sounds…
Elias Rahbani – Dance of Maria (…an interesting tune from 1972 right next door to Anatolya in Lebanon. This tune appeared on Rahbani’s Mosaic of the Orient LP, and there was definitely some Turkish assistance going on in the studio with the arrangement on this album and in the production booth as well, and the influence of this record on artists all over the Middle East at the time and particularly in Turkey is no small thing.)
Altin Gun – Goca Dunya (…not sure what Goca means here, but this group is actually not from Turkey although their sound is firmly rooted in 1970’s & later permutations of funk & soul from Anatolya. The band hails from Amsterdam & in 2019, they released Gece which was nominated for the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards in the Best World Music Album category, and we’ll discuss them more with Dunia in hour 2.)
Mazhar Ve Fuat – Adimiz Miskindir Bizim (…the title here means our name is musky, and the tune was released on the 1971 album entitled We Call Our Turks.)
Alright, so we’re about to pull up to the terminal for check-in, but we got time to let a couple more psyche joints fly into the air. Up next is a tune called Sultan-I Yegah, which is apparently the name of an Ottoman Turkish Sultan of the past, and this is by Nur Yoldas which was released in 1981. After that we’ll close with the timeless Ozdemir Erdogan with a tune that means Open the Door & Get In to finish the first fourth of tonight’s Turkish Delight, and we’ll hear more from Master Erdogan in hour 2 as well. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday night.
Nur Yoldas – Sultan-i Yegah
Ozdemir Erdogan - Aç Kapıyı Gir İçeri

II.
The Drop is back after the first jump of the evening on our Turkish Delight Round Trip Wednesday night, departing at 9pm tonight on flight TD062 bound for the great city sitting in both Asia & Europe, which is Istanbul for those of you in the geographically challenged category. Dunia Aljawad will once again join us to rock some of her own Turkish favorites, and interesting to see what she comes up with as she grew up right next door in Iraq. Naturally this is Danno here checking in and still rocking some of my Turkish favorites here in hour 1, so let’s get to the info on that first pair of tunes we just let fly into space…
Mogollar - Mektup (…as you might have already guessed, this is a cover of an American classic originally by The Boxtops, later made famous by Joe Cocker. Unsurprisingly, this tune means Letter in the Turkish language and the famed band’s name means Mongols, who had a pretty great following in their day back in the 70s.)
Cem Karaca – Namus Belasi feat Mogollar (…this tune’s title means the trouble of honor and was put out in 1975 on an album called Nem Kaldi. You fans of The Doors & Jim Morrison probably noticed the sample of Alabama blues (Whiskey Bar), put out on Jim Morrison & co’s eponymous debut LP from 1967.)
Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
Next block we’ll continue with a few of our favorites to keep up the vintage vibe, but get a little more chill with the tempo. Up next we have Fikret Kizilok, to be followed by Zulfu Lianeli & Esin Afsar, all of which we’ll explain at the afterhours, but for now THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday evening headin to mighty Istanbul.
_________
The Drop has arrived at the gate here at ICN, pretty excited to be showcasing some Turkish funk & psyche stuff tonight for our Round Trip Wednesday this week. Dunia Aljawad will join us once again on flight TD062 once we board, but for now let’s get to the liner notes on that last trio of tunes...
Fikret Kizilok – Yeter Ki (As Long As) (…this cut appeared on Zaman Zaman or From Time To Time in 1983. Mr. Kizilok was a pioneer of Anatolian rock, a prolific songwriter, impresario, multi-instrumentalist, and an early experimentalist. Unfortunately, he moved onto the next realm due to heart disease in 2001.)
Zulfu Livaneli – Karli Kayin Ormani (Snowy Beech Forest) (…not to be confused with a beach where you go swimming & suntan, the artist is mentioning the types of trees that dominate the forest in this song title, as in B E E C H. Another pioneer of his era, this tune was released on an album from 1978 called Nazim Folk Song.)
Esin Afsar – Sandigimi Acamadim (I Could Not Open My Heart) (…heading a bit forward on the timeline with this one, this dropped on Miss Asfar’s album Ozlem or Longing. Throughout her life, Miss Asfar, who was actually born in Italy, was a well-known stage actor & singer, still popular and adored today in Turkey as she gets older.)
Moving towards halftime this evening, we’ll finish with a man who is one of the most popular singers of all time in his native Turkey, who we’ll talk more about in hour 2, of course. Our final tune is Baris Manco with a tune called Donence, or tropic, and that’s gonna be a wrap as it is time to fly. THIS is The Drop as final call to board rings out over the terminal on your Round Trip Wednesday evening in Istanbul.
Baris Manco – Donence
