The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we start by saying I Love Rock N Roll, then go into the maiden voyage sans Prince Paolo with David Whatever. We didn't crash, drown, or get electrocuted so we consider that a major success. Great all new indie throughout!

NOTES
The Arrows – I Love Rock n Roll
- Alan Merrill of The Arrows, who co-wrote "I Love Rock And Roll," dies at 69, one of the first high-profile musicians to succumb to coronavirus.
- Of course, many people probably have never heard that original version of the tune, as Joan Jett’s version is far more famous being a #1 billboard single back in 1981.
- Merrill explained in a Songfacts interview how this song came about: "That was a knee-jerk response to the Rolling Stones' 'It's Only Rock 'N' Roll.' I remember watching it on Top of the Pops. I'd met Mick Jagger socially a few times, and I knew he was hanging around with Prince Rupert Lowenstein and people like that – jet setters. I almost felt like 'It's Only Rock and Roll' was an apology to those jet-set princes and princesses that he was hanging around with - the aristocracy, you know. That was my interpretation as a young man: Okay, I love rock and roll. And then, where do you go with that?"
Young Winona – Red Dress
- This one is out this Thursday, and that is a world premiere right here on The Drop.
- Young Winona is a band originally out of NZ now living in LA. Lead singer Cassie Gaffney & her husband Nick form the nexus of the group.
- Cassie says that this tune is simply an ode to one of their favorite 90’s groups Elastica, which, if you’re familiar with the sound and the look, is pretty much spot on here.
- Big up as always to Amber and Alex of Broken Baby and Poor Man Records. <3

Soccer mommy - shotgun
- Soccer mommy’s sophie allison totally kills it in their latest release. She comes from one of the meccas of music nashville, tennessee and began posting music to soundcloud under the moniker soccer momy in 2015. This might be my favorite song from our lineup today, there’s a childlike innocence to the tone of her vocals that stands in stark contrast to the loneliness of the lyrics. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for soccer mommy and any of her new releases. Keep an eye out for her newest album titled Sometimes, Forever that’s slated to release on jun 24th

Carousel club - Old Boy
- Carousel Club is a band based out of Melbourne, Australia. What was originally a group of five buddies, they started together as a band in 2017. The main two members are frontman Ryan Cornelius and Mathew Stott. Eileen Grace is their latest addition who you can also hear on vocals in their latest track.

Fana Hues – BAD bad
- Just out this weekend is Flora + Fana, which is the artist’s sophomore album just out as of Friday via Bright Antenna.
- The album is kind of an affirmation for the artist, saying that the world outside can be just totally crumbling and decrepit, but internally she’s doing well.

Planet Parlor - Easy
- Planet Parlor is a dream-pop duo coming straight out of Newmarket, New Hampshire. “Easy” is the first part of a dual-single, titled Easy//November. You can hear Liza Lynehan on the vocals while her counterpart Ben Lebeau works the instrumental backing. Planet Parlor are an impressive two-man group and their dreamy tracks are even more impressive when you consider that they do all of their engineering from the comfort of their own homes.

Swiss Portrait – Play with Fire
- This is the latest from Michael Kay Terrance, who’s based in Edinburgh and records and produces everything himself.
- A bit of a phenomenon right now that’s building up a solid following, they just opened last week for Yumi Zouma at King Tut’s.
- Comm Swimming Pool’s bmac also plays with the band in live shows, and Swiss Portrait is bmac’s older brother. Big up to both.4

Cannons – Strangers
- This is a veteran dance music and future funk outfit based in LA.
- Their latest album Fever Dream is out as of Friday, and it’s definitely worth catching in full.
- The band is already on the road touring the album in North America, going until their San Diego date on May 14.

Mansionair (ft. Kim Tee) - Next high
- Mansionair is a three-man indie electronic band formed in 2014. Over the years they’ve have multiple songs make it onto both the australian and us billboard charts under rock, alternative, and of course dance/electronic. Next high is another highly addicting electro pop joint which is a blast to listen to. If you’re a fan of glass animals, and want something a bit more upbeat and lighthearted, you’ll definitely want to check out more of their music.

Delights – 1989
- This is the latest from this band of college friends who formed the band in 2017, and they appear courtesy of Modern Sky.
- The band hail from Manchester, and if you’d like to hear more they put out the In My Life EP last year, which you should certainly check out if you dig this.

Kaelin ellis - lil bit
- Kaelin ellis is an orlando, florida based producer and a pure product of the new soundcloud era. The 24 year old says it wasnt until 6th or 7th grade that he started branching out into music that wasnt gospel, as his parents didnt want him listening to any secular music. He says the only way he could listen to new music was through videogame soundtracks and specifically mentions nba2k8s soundtrack as one playlist that blew his mind. I know that for myself, the GTA series was always one of those series where the scope and the scale of the soundtrack was just as epic as the campaign itself. Be sure to check out more of Kaelin Ellis if you’re looking for a hiphop / glitch hop producer who’s always looking for the next new sound.

Sly5thAve feat Roberto Versategui – Agua de Jamaica
- This is the latest off the UK’s Tru Thoughts Records, and it is a doozy.
- The title track to the record, this is a six minute + cosmic expansion featuring some mind-blowing drums and just generally super tight future jazz.
- The pair originally met whilst studying Jazz in Texas and began piecing together the release on Sly5thAve’s first visit to Mexico, over a drink of Agua de Jamaica – a drink made with water, hibiscus flower and sugar.

Kate bollinger - who am i but someone
- I know our listeners are looking for the latest tracks, but even though this track may not be piping hot, at two weeks old, it was so fresh, I had to add it to the mix. Kate bollinger is an artist based out of Richmond, VA and who am I but someone is her latest gift to the world. I love songs that transport you to a very specific mood, or era, and this track is just that kind of piece. It feels like she’s tuned her listeners to a radio station in the 60s and sat us down with an ice cold glass of lemonade.

Still woozy x remi wolf – Pool
- About this track, Still woozy said, **quote** “it was one of the quickest written songs I’ve ever been a part of. Remi and I had been talking about life all morning so the content was fresh in our minds as we went to write.” He says remy wolf recorded her track in one take and he could immediately tell it was going to be special. If you’re a fan of awesome music videos, I highly suggest checking out the visuals for Pool. They collaborated with director Haley Appell and it even stars Remy’s dog, Juno.

Boy With Apple – Brighter Than The Sun
- This is the latest from the Gothenburg, Sweden-based band who’ve been around since their 2019 formation.
- This band is mainly known as a shoegaze outfit, but this has a throwback drum loop that has a 90’s sound to it. However, it’s not for nostalgia’s sake per se, as the tune takes a big turn into a dream pop realm. Either way, a bit of a changeup from this band, but do keep an eye out, their stuff just keeps getting better & better.

Joesef - It’s been a little heavy lately*
This is Glasglow’s own Joesef, that’s J, O, E, sef. After making his debut in 2019 he’s quickly grown a wide fanbase for his unflinchingly honest and impassioned lyrics. There’s an awesome 80s pop vibe that immediately shines through this track and I felt a lot of billy ocean energy coming from this new british sensation. You can find more info on joesef at joesefjoesefjoesef.com

Scoobert Doobert – Boardwalk
- The mysterious masked man in the Scooby Doo getup out of San Diego is back with his latest EP.
- The record is called KOAN A, which I’m guessing is Japanese which he speaks himself.
- Look out for his production works moving forward with Japanese outfit CHAI, who are on tour with Mitski at the moment but have new stuff on the way.

Thou - goo in the burning city (fmgew remix)
- Thou are an american sludge metal band based in baton rouge, louisiana. I’m going to be completely honest with you guys and let you know that I did not know that this particular genre, sludge metal, existed. When I first heard this track the first thing I was reminded of was Tool. There’s something dark, sinister, and inescapable about their sound.
- Goo in the burning city is a track created as part of a soundtrack to an upcoming videogame called NORCO, which is currently available on steam. If you’re not a fan of the typical dream-pop, lo-fi sound that seems to be dominating the culture these days, you should definitely check out more of Thou.

Aaron taos – vertigo*
- Aaron taos comes out with another indie pop single titled vertigo. Vertigo boasts all of the things that fans of aaron taos have come to expect. Catchy melodies, effortless lyrics that seem to flow out in a stream of consciousness, and an overall tripped out feel. He works out of brooklyn, nyc, and has said that his favorite two bands are the strokes and the arctic monkey. He mentions that he was enamored by the sense of coolness that the strokes exuded from the stage, and I’d say his music definitely exudes a similar kind of cool. His name kind of sounds like a superhero name too, which is always a good thing.

Orgone feat Terin Ector – Wicked Karma
- This is a veteran Cali funk & soul band that has been around for years now, and the saga continues.
- The lead track to their upcoming 13th career album, this one is an incredible jump-up type of tune to get out of bed properly.
- The album is called Lost Knights (with a k, by the way), and that is out May 27 by the band’s 3 Palms imprint.

Earth Dad – Tomorrow
- Another album out on the band’s in-house label, this band is out of NYC and describes their sound as puzzle rock and electric shock.
- Birthday is available everywhere as of last Wednesday, so do check it out if you’re into the vibe here.

Flipturn - Playground
- Playground is flipturn’s newest single after their last release in 2020. Lead guitarist Tristan Duncan says that they’ve been exploring the idea of what its like to yearn for the innocence and freedom of childhood. This is a direct quote from duncan, “at some point, you realize you forget what it felt like to be a kid. That’s when it becomes easy to romanticize it, but a lot harder to shrug away the sobering thoughts of your adult life.” For me, personally, I’m turning 36 in Korean age next year, and it’s pretty wild to think that time has flown so fast. Flipturn are a band of high school friends who used to kick it in a garage in fernandina beach, florida, after school, and you really can’t get more rock and roll than that.

St lucia - another lifetime
- St. lucia is band headed by south african electronic artist, Jean-philip grobler, and they’re based out of brooklyn, ny. A bit more about the frontman, Grobler spent much of his time travelling and performing as a part of the drakensberg boys choir. He says that his influences range from boyz 2 men, sting, and phil collins. On the topic of phil collins, I’d just like to say that the soundtrack to tarzan had no business being as awesome as it is, and i appreciate that. If you want to check out more of St. lucia, you can go to stlucianewyork.com

Drench Fries – Out My Window
- This is the solo project of Levi Nattrass, who’s out of Seattle.
- Out My Window appears on the artist’s new EP just out Friday called Being Silver. The four tune EP is all done at home by the artist, with a few important exceptions, notably this tune which was engineered by Samuel Rosson and produced by Stephen Vincent Ibanez externally.
